Best way to watch it: wait until it's nighttime, turn off all the lights & put it on. Really sets the mood. Also, it's crazy how this show had dark themes & imagery, had characters use real guns & would routinely punch/kick & knock each other around back in that era when censorship was heavy. The show also mentioned drug dealers & had one mobster's son going through withdrawal. In a children's cartoon! They could NEVER get away with that now!

It's incredible how one voice actor can become known as THE official Batman yet never wear the suit in a movie. It goes to show how important the voice is in the chareacter of Batman. Batman truly is all about the voice in my opinion. Thank you Mr. Conroy for making my childhood happier. You are more than just that celebrity we know as Batman's voice, you are a human being with many other awesome qualities too.

The thing I loved most about the animated series was it perfectly balanced the adult-ish themes but kept the target audience still as kid-friendly as possible. Although there was psychological torment, some flirtation, emotional scars that had consequences for character subsequent behaviors, no one actually died, or at least practically no one. You didn't have super villains wielding machine guns mowing down innocent civilians. You figured that there were real stakes involved every time Bruce Wayne donned the cape, but it never took itself so seriously that it got depressing.

I've recently re-watched the entire series earlier this year, the first time since it aired here in Germany in the nineties, so I had mostly forgotten every episodes plot. I got a lady-friend to watch the show with me, she never knew there were cartoon adventures with Batman, but she was openminded when I told her it's not your average-kids-show. Started with 'Heart of Ice' and she was hooked, she actually was kinda sad afterwards. Since she works in coaching, she grew to like the psychological exaggerations of the series, something she had no expectations of finding in a 'kiddie show'... she mostly felt sorry for Clayface, Harvey Dent, Victor Fries, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, and especially the Ventriloquist, and she could not for the HECK of it understand why Harley Quinn kept up with her abusive relationship with that psychopathic clown... Watched the series over a course of 4 months with her, and sometimes her enthusiasm went down when Robin got involved or it got too silly, but she was surprised when the show just ended and I hadn't told her beforehand. Bought a copy of Mask of Phantasm a week later, which wasn't part of the blu ray set I had, and she loved it! :-)

Sounds awesome. And yeah it kind of sucks that most people in the west have fully associated anything animated with being childish or for children. It definitely deserves to be remembered, but just because it deserves it doesn’t mean it will be :(. I mean look how Warner Bros. has acted like there never was a DCAU when trying to make their justice League Universe. Kids under about 20 have no idea about all the completely amazing Animated Series that made DC just as good as if not better than the MCU. All they know about DC is the live action movies and they think DC sucks except for Batman sometimes.
They didn’t hire not one of the creative minds behind the DCAU to supervise and guide the DCEU. I honestly fear it will be forgotten and never truly replicated.

Batman: The Animated Series was such a huge part of my childhood. This came on tv right when I came home from school and was what I would look forward to all day. I had no idea I was watching such a legendary show until years later. I remember the stories were so amazing and deep, then 30 minutes later the show was over and the end credits would play…I can still remember feeling sad after each show because I wanted more of it. They would go so deep into a story and then wrap it up and end it quickly. Each episode delved into such amazing plots but they left so much meat on the bones. They had to wrap it up quickly bc it’s only 22minutes they had + time for commercials. Ahhh what a time of life that was. Thank you to the creators of this, y’all did a wonderful job.

I definitely appreciate this series more older than I did as a child since I was 3 when The Animated Series appeared on television. I remember having mixed feelings on Batman when he appeared on Justice League and Static Shock due to his emotionally distant nature, but the first seasons of this show is what I adore about Batman: He has a balance of hope, compassion and witty humor. Watching the episodes again also helped me love Clock King, Baby Doll, Harvey Dent and Poison Ivy for a time when she wanted a family.

(I would also include the episode "Sideshow", an interesting character-study, and "Be a Clown".) And FYI: if you pay close attention in "Harley's Holiday" she the first ever to figure out Bruce's ID! You forgot to mention the movies though; 'Phantasm' alone is better than any of the live-action films that came out in the 90's!
However, I do think you should try to give 'Batman Beyond' another chance; it's like Batman meets 'Bladerunner'! =) Great Vid!

As an adult you definitely appreciate this series more because of how mature it is compared to other cartoons that came out back in that time period and cartoons that have come out now. My favourite episodes though would be episodes that are not that popular but I love them. I like "The Cape and The Cowl Conspiracy "Night Of The Ninja" and the excellent "Nothing To Fear" which is in my opinion an episode which could have been a full length animated film.

I was 4 when the show came out, so it's a little weird to me to read that kids thought it was too scary. But it's also a good thing because that meant that the show did its job: telling intense, macabre, noirish action tales.

    • @youngknowledgeseeker
      @youngknowledgeseeker 3 года назад +4

The Riddlers too neurotic and he handicaps/foils himself to the point that it’s hard to respect him as someone worthy of being his arch-nemesis. The Joker however is his complete and almost perfect foil. Order vs Chaos, planning vs free balling, logic vs utter insanity, and morality vs do whatever. The Joker, most of the time, can’t be bullied, scared, reasoned with by normal means, and his goals are sometimes just utterly unpredictable or non sensical. Everything Batman uses in his psychological and physical arsenal against bad guys are usually useless against him. Bane was a good villain but he’s pretty much just a “I’m arguably as smart as you and stronger than you” and that’s it. But more or less typical bad guy.

You're right in regards towards it influencing the style of American Animation for quite some time, as it was the first major production animation to feature an Americanized take on Anime-based animation(combining the stylings of yesteryear with the slow-growing American interests in Anime themes). Heck, to this day, there are still studios producing a more "fluid" take on this animation aspect(as Even Amazon Studios's successful series "Vox Machina" uses influence upon this basis, though leaning a bit more towards Anime-style). So, Batman: The Animated Series really opened the doors for works that came after it. It's just the saddening ordeal that Animated works, now of days, are being more scarcely developed.

This is still the definitive Batman to me. Characters like Clock King and the Ventriloquist can be seen as goofy for sure, but when done right, they're oddly fascinating.

I really love Batman the Animated Series. I like Kevin Conroy portrayal of Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, Jeffrey Combs as Clayface, and Donald Glover as the Riddler. And Harley Quinn, of course

Batman: The Animated Series, is by far one of my all-time favorite animated shows. There are so many classic episodes (they all are classics, really). I definitely enjoyed "Joker's Favor", "Blind As a Bat", "Eternal Youth", "I've Got Batman In My Basement" and "The Underdwellers". Those are episodes that I haven't heard being discussed very much. Very, very proud to own the entire series on DVD. I'm definitely going to binge watch the entire series, including the late 90s episodes, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of BTAS next year... Can't wait!! Awesome review, really enjoyed it! 👍

I would love to see you take on Gargoyles. Gargoyles was very dark and very unique at the time, but ABC decided to cancel the series with a cliffhanger that has never resolved during Season 3. The series holds up well and was way ahead of its time.

This one my favorite animated series of all time (alongside JLU, Avengers EMH, Last Airbender and Spectacular Spider man) and the best adaptation of Batman ever made. It's dark, the stories are mature but also embraces the fun and fantastic side of the comic books, appealing for both kids as well a older audience. I specially like how Kevin Conry's version of Batman has a much more balanced personality, He is brooding and badass vigilante but also able to show compassion and tries the best to help others, including his enemies. This heroic and compassionate side of Batman is what helps make him so likable and interesting in the Animated series and is something that is missing in most of the live action adaptations.

DOA is great! Classic Film Noir Mystery and Cinematic masterpiece! One can actually watch the ENTIRE DOA FILM while IN-GAME of DEUS EX MANKIND DIVIDED. really cool, i totally watched it all during my last playthrough. In the Dvali theatre near the end of the game, during your last time in prague. you have to watch it all in one sitting though- reloading a save midway through movie will restart the video clip.

Batman: The Brave and The Bold was a great show! It had Batman teaming up with Abraham Lincoln to take down a steampunk cyborg John Wilkes Booth. That is a concept I can one hundred percent get behind. I enjoyed this retrospective look at an amazing show. Thanks for a great trip down memory lane!

10:44 I have a funny story too: I met Loren Lester (Nightwing/Robin) at Long Beach Comic Con and we chatted for a bit. I got to tell him that his voice is what I hear when reading any dialogue for Dick Grayson. I had a tough time concentrating because I literally said to him, “dude, I’m so sorry, but I’m blown away I’m talking to Nightwing” and he just laughed and said “No, it’s cool!” 😁 Sometimes you can meet your heroes

I think the name, "Fries", pronounced as "freeze" for Victor Fries' name is too on-the-nose and goofy regarding the Mr. Freeze persona. I think he should be called Victor Fletcher instead (just keeping the surname starting with "f" alive as it feels suitable, like an homage of sorts).

Dude you talked about the episode but you didn't mention that Harlequin was invented by this TV show... Love in your videos but that's a massive oversight. It was amazing because you think she's always been there but that was the origin of her not from the comic books.

Batman: The Animated Series is a masterpiece and my definitive Batman. Without the show, I wouldn't be a Batman fan and I wouldn't be the filmmaker I am today. The art direction, the voice cast, Shirley Walkers Score! It's all superb! I love Heart of Ice, Almost Got E'm, Two Face and If You're So Smart Why Aren't You Rich? I too fell in love with The Riddler after watching his episode. An underrated episode for me is Appointment in Crime Alley...not a perfect episode, but very strong themes..This episode which inspired me to make my own Batman fan film - Living in Crime Alley. Fantastic video and breakdown on this important, iconic show!
