I think one of the reasons this game is so popular with queer and autistic people is because this is the most out there, unique game in the genre. Shooter games like COD very conservatively stick to the norms, they're exactly what a shooter is supposed to be and nothing else. Overwatch is a bit a better in that regard, but it's still overwhelmingly just people in sci-fi armor with no room for self-expression. Splatoon takes place in this completely different world, inspired by sea life and counter culture of the youth. Weapons aren't weapons, nobody plays as a human and self-expression is a key component of the franchise. It throws all norms out of the window, and in doing so embraces odd people.

@@birdflox1337 what 😭 "hot women" is very subjective. me personally i think recent additions of women in ow like illari are cute and i love her as a character. "muscle man" is just untrue.. yes ow has muscular men but most of them are not what i would call "muscular men" ... plus failing to see behind characters just because they're (usually) attractive is a problem on your end. there's also plenty of unique characters like echo, bastion and ramattra that aren't even human and i don't understand who exactly has the mentioned "sci fi chest plate armor". Characters like Brigitte and Reinhardt have exaggerated but normal-looking armor with sci fi tech (and i don't know why you think thats a problem when not all of them have that.)

As someone who only dived into the Splatoon games recently, I will say that I find Splatoon similar in many aspects to the Garden Warfare games, which I personally grew up with. Not gameplay wise, but mainly in, for lack of a better term, “vibes”.
      Both are colorful.
      Both have lots of customization.
Both maket themselves largely on being different than other shooters.
Both have a wave-based defensive horse mode that you play alongside other players, which can be mildly infuriating.
That being said, the GW series is much more…bombastic in its presentation, with much wilder customizations. Otherwise though, I feel like that game series has a lot of the aspects you list as attracting queer and autistic people, and yet..I haven’t seen any strong queer or autistic rep from the community.
Maybe it’s the focus on kills like most shooters. Maybe it’s being on PC and major consoles that attract possibly more competitive players. Maybe the characters aren’t humanoid enough for people to express themselves. Idk.
I just brought this up because cause your comment made me wonder why more colorful and similar shooters don’t have such well represented queer and neurodivergent communities.

I think it's notable that in the most recent installment, Nintendo made a lot of the gendered aspects of the game mix and match. Such as making all hair styles available, changing the king/queen splatfest title to ruler, etc. Obviously, they've been moving this direction for other franchises, such as with Animal Crossing which exclusively refers to player characters gender neutrally. I don't have a thesis statement, it just means a lot to me.

true, the fact that player interaction is limited to posts outside of the matches and 2 emotes (3 if you're taken down) while playing its multiplayer does contribute to filtering the pointless negativity that other chat rooms have. It also does help that being splatted doesn't eliminate players, although it can still be annoying when you still get camped by pro snipers

As some1 who is bisexual and gender fluid and has been playing splatoon since before I even knew it, I was really attracted, some factors for me were:
It stood out as something more exciting and more colorful in a sea of overly edgy shooters, the gameplay was dynamic.
You could customize everything about your character without many arbitrary limitations other games have (they went even further in splatoon 3).
The overall story and characters is mostly female representarion, and its specifically good, non-sexualized representation which is extremely rare in competitive shooter games.
It incorporates a lot of random sea facts, and I like random facts
It has deep lore, and I like deep lore
The community is open and not toxic (probably bc theres no voice chat)

Outside of turf war it's great as a competitive game, and it's one of the games where I felt my groth as a player the most. Easy to understand but very deep gameplaywise: that's a great recepy for a game to become someone's special interest

As a gay guy, what makes Splatoon so appealing to me is the overall aesthetic or how playing the game makes you feel. It’s less aggressive when compared to other shooters while also providing a lot of space for player expression even in the core gameplay mechanics. This also could be an effect of other games having more oppressive communities. I think Splatoon appealing to the youths helped establish it as a safe gaming community for queers, as generally speaking Gen Z is more accepting of people who are “different”.

It amuses me that I ended up playing this game, despite being aware of it for years but never really got into the thick of it until 3 came out. Was vaguely interested for a bit but did not have the proper systems to play + had a incident back in 2018/19 that gave the series almost traumatizing connections for me... Eventually with time (and my younger sister being obsessed with the series and desiring the 3rd game) is what allowed me to fully heal and give it a try. Over a year later and here I am, nearly about to hit S rank once again with nearly 300 hours in game.
Autistic and queer here as well and can see why it attracts "my people", the world is unique, the series is allowed to be itself and in some ways it doesn't always "feel" like a Nintendo property, there's a lot of expression I don't see elsewhere. In fact, one of the reasons why I picked a Octoling was because of their underdog struggle and how much I related to that.

I've heard once how autistic people struggle in social situations because of how unpredictable it is. Autism is a spectrum, and on the spectrum is needing routine on some degree. Things need to be planned, organized, and brought to fruition in a very specific way. When this cannot be met, autistic people become upset, and how upset they become and how much they show their upset-ness depends on where they are on the spectrum.
For me, everything collapses like a stack of dominos. Let's say I have 8 things planned for a day. I have to complete them sequentially, because it's easier to organize it that way. However, if thing 3 fails, well, now I can't complete it sequentially. I can't go from thing 2 to thing 4. Therefore, once thing 3 had failed, I could no longer complete 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 until the next day I'm able to get back to do thing 3.
Anyways, social environments are not this ridged, thank fucking god. But this makes it very tiring and frustrating for autistics since now the environment feels unsafe, unknown, unwelcoming even. They can't predict or foresee how their friends will react or what their peers might say. They can't judge how their joke will be interpreted or how others will perceive what clothes they wear.
In splatoon though... It's... all on fucking wiki guides. Almost everything about this game has; a name, lore, proof, numbers, graphs, strategies, methods of playstyle, movements, style, gear abilities, requirements, stats on who died, how many times, number of gold medals, specials used, how much ink it takes to throw a splat bomb, what a splat bomb is, etc., ect-fucking-cetera.
It's all written down. Almost everything is written down, or given some easy solution as to how it works. It's easy to follow, it's predictable. Because the one thing neurotypicals, allistics, and autistics have in common is the fear of the unknown.
Unfortunately, this doesn't stop me from wearing literally the worst clothing combo imaginable in battle 😭

This was an effective and brief analysis of the subject! But (as the RUclips comments show) there is so much more to this than can be quickly covered in a 3 minute video. There is ABSOLUTELY all sorts of research that can be done here to understand how to support queer & autistic kids more, who often find themselves isolated in society,

As a (probably i havent been diagnosed but looking at effects is like reading a biography abt myself) autistic transfem the ranked modes are what draw me in, I never like ranked in other games, but for some reason this is the only game i get really competitive in, I also like that it has tons of weapons to hyper fixate on, its totally reasonable to play aa single weapon for hundreds oh hours, and its really fun to learn all the nuance, though everything else said here pretty much applies to me too!

RUclipsr Squid School said at one point that one reason the Splatoon community is so diverse might actually be because of the lack of in-game voice chat. So AFAB people won't get judged by misogynistic weirdos, and autistic people don't need to talk to people when playing, which can be socially draining.

The entire reason I love Splatoon is because its just so appealing, the attention to details is crazy, and I generally like Video Game OSTs, especially Nintendo games, and Splatoon is by far the best when it comes to music. Also the Amiibo are cool to have. The only issue I have with Splatoon is the fact that the matchmaking, especially in 3, is so bad, half the time I will change my ability combos, and weapons, and will just have like 20 match lose streaks because I get matched with pros, and can barley find casual lobbies. The most fun I've had besides Splatfests is when my friend my bad internet plays, since I let him host and we get really easy lobbies. So hopefully in Splatoon 4 we get better matchmaking, and also dedicated servers (paying $20 a year in 2024 for Peer to Peer is pretty sad)

I got into it at the end of sploon 2 where I was just casually playing, but now, in sploon 3 I am hardcore into it - Using gear seeds to calculate chances for abilities on specific gear, grinding weapons to 4★, getting to S+ and finishing the catalogue twice. Sure, not super impressive, but I feel so accomplished that I did all that in the silly squid game. I love this game sm

that is entirely a you issue. you need to get over yourself. try being forced to stay in a closet and not being allowed to express yourself for years on end and see if you don't want to shove it in people's faces when you finally get the chance because you've finally found so much joy and freedom in being able to say these things now. just because you're insecure about your own sexuality or whatever it is you're insecure about doesn't mean anybody is seeking attention. they're just loud and proud against a swath of people that want us dead, end of. and i'm not looking for an argument either, so don't bother.

I am bisexual but that is really irrelevant to my comment as I didn't say anything phobic. There are people constantly (literally every single day) making the lamest posts with no originality or effort and nothing at all to do with the game. They continue doing it because they get a following on social media, so yes they are attention seekers. There's no talent in scribbling something I'm autistic or gæ. They are such an embarrassment to those of us who don't make our disability(s) or sexuality our identities.

There’s so many other games and pieces of media that are male-centric, and it’s been that way since the beginning of time. Splatoon is a nice breath of fresh air
