The point of a clinic is just to show skill & freestyle.. Yeah, sometimes, you may get carried away with chops but drumming is all about your comfort zone, the way you express yourself.
Not sure if you necessarily play drums, because theres a such thing as playing behind, or in front of the beat, you can play around a time signature. Happens in jazz and Latin music a lot. It's not uncommon.
0:24, 0:42, etc; he plays around the time. I totally agree with you on that last statement, all these chops aren't needed, and will get you put on the "DO NOT CALL BACK" list for gigs and session recordings. I chose not to play much of them,"Less Is More"...Steve Jordan, Keith Carlock, Stanton Moore, Ziggaboo Modeliste, Clyde Stubblefield, etc;
Y hate. Stuff like this is specifically to do chops to your hearts content. Trust Calvin Rodgers got much pocket... And as far as not getting gigs and sessions look him up. He plays on everybody's record and it's always fire
Well instead of judging one clip where the track is barely able to be heard. you should take the time to listen to his playing when he's on a live session and a recording or with a live band....He's been on various albums and gigs for over the past 20 years. Everything is clean. /watch?v=vVFzbbL2T-8
Wanna know why his fills are "out of time"? It's because he knows where the "1" is....each time he plays a fill he plays around the time but he always lands on the downbeat no matter what he's playing. Also whats wrong with taking risks? If calvin was Sloppy he wouldn't be doing clinics, sessions or tours he's playing. Maybe you should take the time to count. Also it's not common among young players. Guys like Dennis Chambers and Vinnie Colaiuta do the same thing.
hehehe, there are so many instances of fills completely out of any known time signature and nowhere near the meter of the song that the only conclusion is that they are 'out of time'. :-) just sloppy when he tries to play too much, it's quite common, among young players especially.
Bro can u try not hatin on Calvin man cuz he got Grammy's and a songwriter and producer and one the top musician in the game and a legend. I know everybody got their opinion there opinion but if you don't anything nice to say about Calvin or his drum playing with all due respect keep it to urself. God Bless🙏🙏
nope, just out of time and sloppy; clearly trying too hard to play too much. Out of all the sessions I've done with Vinnie, he's never done that.....:-/
i guess calvin plays too much for kenny g's bass player vail johnson. what about your slap solo's vail ? is that not too much ? the descripion is drum clinic i expect to hear some unnecessary chops. just like if i saw you in a bass clinic i would expect you play way more chops than on a gig. if i look you up on youtube it's 90 percent slap solo's. what if someone was blasting on you for never playing the bass ? i know you can/do play bass very well and wouldn't want to be judged on just a clinic
Man, When it comes to listen or watch calvin, it must be from beginning to end! Wooo!

The point of a clinic is just to show skill & freestyle.. Yeah, sometimes, you may get carried away with chops but drumming is all about your comfort zone, the way you express yourself.
Found myself some more motivation to continue playing for Christ. That's what it's all about.

That red drum set belongs to Marvin McQuitty (God rest his soul)
I will be glad if Mr vail johnson will upload his own video teaching us how is done, please.
Osayemwenre Jeremiah Can’t be done any better
Vail Johnson? Never heard of him...
right around 6:14 oohhhhh ya you are in it where it needs to be!
realtalk where did c-rod come from because it seemed like he came out of nowhere and was ham, then after smashin the game, took it up a level
Y hate. Stuff like this is specifically to do chops to your hearts content. Trust Calvin Rodgers got much pocket... And as far as not getting gigs and sessions look him up. He plays on everybody's record and it's always fire
Awesome
How can somebody down play a musician like this. There is a reason why he is in top 10 drummers
them leaving, left the perfect amount of oxygen intake to carbon dioxide outtake, to allow him to get into that smooth zone
the 1 dislike is the guy that had to play after calvin
I'd love to see this guy and Lester Estelle Jnr have a jam together
wow
I have an IDEA, can someone ask VAIL JOHNSON to post the videos of HIM playing drums, so he can show us how its SUPPOSED to be done?
3:17 > 3:21 WTF ?!?! BOSS
either you get it or you don't....
See that red set next to Cal's? That 1 person obviously got upset that Calvin walked in and stole HIS clinic.
That’s not Calvin that’s LaDell Abrams

JUST RIDICULOUS!!! SMH MY GOD TODAY!!!!!
Derico Watson...
calvin I;m schooling you seriously...!!!
Haha, there's another drum set there, as if someone could actually play AFTER Calvin...
Wanna know why his fills are "out of time"? It's because he knows where the "1" is....each time he plays a fill he plays around the time but he always lands on the downbeat no matter what he's playing. Also whats wrong with taking risks?

Moog168 Man he know he ain't done any sessions with Chambers or Vinnie cause he'd know they do the same thing
I guess this Vail Johnson guy must've disliked the video.
They probably thought they were all good drums...then Calvin started playing.
Lol..
lot's of notes...not necessarily in time.:-/
maybe toilet break??
they aint got rhythm.
