One of the things that sets CR apart from a lot of drummers is how he anchors his fills with the snare; it's almost always hitting on that 2 and 4 and the fills are built around that, but it doesn't sound monotonous
What's up Mr. Rodgers! Any left hand workout tips you can give a rising young drummer. I'm from New Orleans and I play on Frenchman mostly and we do a lot of songs that requires grooves similar the ones you've used here.

The CLICK is the quarter note wood block sound. The everything else you hear is coming from the drum loop.
