I was once proud and arrogant.. I worked for years with physical problems.. but... "I worked" and all the time I was working I was judging others who were not.. "Must be nice to sit home and get paid on welfare while I work so they can have cable TV!" would be my favorite thing to rant.. Then I got sick and it didn't let up.. I was missing so much work and it was putting me in the hospital.. now to be fair.. I was going to church at this time in my life and had considered myself to being a follower of Christ.. but things didn't get any better and as time went by with me missing so much work.. we were unable to pay our bills and that also included the house.. we kept trying to get the banks to help us but I was making too much money (in truth I was making no money due to no time for missing work with vacation days...) long story short... my doctor and I talked about me going on disability.. as I started that.. I had to go to welfare to get help.. still.. the fact that we were going to lose the house and we had NO where to go.. My pride and foolishness drove us both the end of our ropes.. I wasn't suicidal but I didn't want to live.. soon they came and took the car.. we had no way of getting food then.. I remember lying in bed with a heart so heave it hurt.. I finally called out to God. I told he I couldn't fix this problem and that if he would take care of my wife I would be happy for it and that I was sorry for my sin.. the church we as attending had shut it's doors and though good friends did help as much as they could.. it just wasn't enough.. then the day came with the call from the bank came.. and God made a way for us too keep the home!! friends of ours gave us a car *that's still running after all these years!!* I remember reading the book of Job.. I wanted to know why God did what he did too Job.. and at the end.. God's answer was simple... he asked Job... "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world?" .. how far had this proud man fallen... and yet.. like Peter walking on the water... Jesus had reached out his hand and pulled me up!!! I'm now on disability and yes.. we have the internet.. O.o.. God meets our needs and is kind enough to let us enjoy somethings in life.. we have food on our table and yes.. the old car is still running us down the road for now.. I made good money back in my day.. no so much now.. but we have what we need.. I got Baptized just this last year.. all this being said.... Good Preaching and to all who read this... @@bailujen8052 That’s not entirely true. if you truly are saved you should be moving your life in a direction that aligns with God‘s will. obviously the ultimate goal of Christians is to evangelize but some people evangelize like street preaching and other people do it in their workplace or with their friends. been constantly busy evangelizing is not required to be saved. we are saved without works but the works that we do after we are saved prove we are saved. The most important thing to do once you are saved is to build a deep relationship with Jesus (praying and reading the Bible often) and by doing so he will change your heart to want to evangelize.
Jesus didn't call her a scavenger dog (kuón), but rather a little dog (kunarion). It isn't a racial slur and it isn't even a reference to her sin. It is just an analogy meaning that she is not part of the chosen people of God. Recall that not all of God's chosen people were even saved, so there is no saved/lost or righteous/sinful contrast here. The fact is that this woman was actually a believer. All Jesus is saying is that the kingdom is to Israel first. Not to the saved first, because not all Israel was saved, but simply to God's chosen nation first.
Dude, you were never a dog. People just want to run around in circles trying to claim jesus was perfect and there was no logical reason anyone would have found him offensive. In reality Jesus hit a bunch of people with a whip and overturned the currency exchange tables inside the sacred temple. Neither the Jews nor Roman's would be pleased with that. He DEFINATLY WOULD BE ARRESTED. Also he was trying at least to become king of the jews, creating an independent judea from roman rule, which given how shitty living with the Roman's was is understandable. Basically weather you find his actions morally right or not, there are very obvious reasons why he would have upset both the Roman's in huge ways. And yet when he dies we are all supposed to be shocked. He did call the lady a dog, jesus was actually super rude sometimes and didn't always have the best manners. People have to reconcile the "actual jesus" moving in the historical context of his time with "perfect church jesus". Anyway sorry for the rant. Don't let the world guilt you into thinking you were "a dog". As much as I do love dogs. You've always been a person, just one who is growing and changing in the world.
Thanks Mike! I needed this. I have been slack in my prayers for my "agnostic" husband to find Christ Jesus. (I was too...until about six years ago....in our 18 year marriage). He grew up Catholic and defends that, but not Christ Jesus. I knew I needed to continue in my prayers ...though may not be answered the way I think they should be. Sigh...please pray for me...that I lose the pride that keeps me from trusting God more. I know He is good and very, very, very patient. I praise Him for that......or we'd all be lost. This passage is also found in Matthew. I didn't know for the longest what this passage meant. But about a month ago, I was reading the gospels and I came across this passage. My eyes were opened and I love this passage. Even us Gentiles are part of God's Kingdom. "I will have a people that are not my people". 🙂 This passage is a foreshadowing of God's people.

This video is relatively old now but Mike if you see this please know that this video is one of my favourites because for some time this part of the Matthew and Mark gospels used to make me nervous as I heard all sorts from heretical groups such as the BHI and Jewish professors (only very few, thankfully) that I being of gentile descent was doomed and forever deemed as a dog. But the real reason I love this video is because it did not cuddle me in a way that the message was watered down. But it made me realise my pride and Bible-belt syndrome (although I'm from the UK). I was raised going to church and the Lord certainly has been very patient with me and developed me but I was still under the impression that because I was born in the gracious era whereby in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Gentile - I assumed myself as having always been a child. I knew that without Jesus I was a wretch but for some reason hearing the word "dog" insulted me. Because being raised in a Christian family, I did not understand the Jew and Gentile tension that really was profound in the Bible. I forgot that my own ancestors were not followers of Christ. They practised evil things. This video was both encouraging yet convicting. Because in this time of national and ethnic identity - whereby everyone strives to pride themselves in their cultural heritage (and I am proud of my ethnicity) - it is too easy to forget that it is nothing, in the end. Especially for those in Christ. Had I followed the traditional religions of my mother and father's ancestral heritage, I would have practised all sorts of eastern and celtic things. Yet at some point in my family line - by the grace of God - He disrupted the pattern. Yet even then, we were still loved by Him as His creation. With some of the things ancient Indonesians, ancient Irish Celts and ancient Britons and Danes did - I could very well see the detestable dog-like scavenging essence of my family. Yet even then Jesus said "pet"... My ancestors would have done things that I loathe and spit at. That was my heritage. Yet God said "little dog... You shall now be My child, as well." And that's amazing. Now, this part of the Matthew and Mark gospels is one of my favourites. And ironically, it makes me even more proud of my ethnicity in the sense that it is evidence of the love of the God of Israel. I mean - imagine looking at the ancient religions at the time, all set on death and focused on their own central peoples. And then one sees the prophecies of the Jewish religion and it promises to speak to the non-Jew, too. That its Messiah would be the Saviour of the world. That is quite astounding. Anyway... Sorry for this ridiculously long message but I could hardly contain my joy over the epiphany I received when I first watched this video! Whether you're a rebellious child of the heritage or a dog by heritage - go to the Lord who wants to make you His beloved child! Chew on that, pride.

Dogs referring to people is part of the revelation given to John recorded at Revellation 22:15 .Yes folks some percentage of those raised in the second resurrection event are referred to as dogs .
Absolutely agree and although I understood that it was to teach us a valuable, needed lesson, I knew about the importance of the "children first" and that we were not excluded from salvation (and God did not see us as less than or as dogs) knowing that the word is more akin to "pet" and not "dog" (as it is used throughout scripture as a low scavenger who deserves no love) it has totally transformed my understanding of this passage and I thank the Almighty for this teaching and for Mike's work for our saviour

She was not a Jew and when Jesus made that statement she would have be angry and left she knew what she wants for her child and she was able to seen beyond her situation.

But... because of those wrong paths, I am so thankful for this! Possibly if you are binging you were/are starving. Been there. When you are starving you tend to eat too fast and get full too quickly. It takes a while to realize there is plenty and pace. Maybe take the time to go slowly, to appreciate, and absorb. Possibly you are wanting them to be shorter to get to that one episode that will satisfy? I hope you find it, but also stay the course through all that is here. May the peace of God be with you as you as journey that the pace and depth is good with you.

children . . . little dogs: Since dogs were unclean according to the Mosaic Law, the Scriptures often use the term in a derogatory sense. (Le 11:27; Mt 7:6; Php 3:2; Re 22:15) However, in both Matthew’s account (15:26) and Mark’s account of Jesus’ conversation, the diminutive form of the term meaning “little dog” or “house dog” is used, softening the comparison. Perhaps this indicates that Jesus used an affectionate term for household pets in non-Jewish homes. By likening Israelites to “children” and non-Jews to “little dogs,” Jesus evidently wanted to indicate an order of priority. In a household that had both children and dogs, the children would be fed first.
Thank you for this teaching, Mike. I was always bothered with this part a bit - not because she is a woman, but because she's gentile; I mean why doesn't God love all His creation equally? But it's clearer now. Another one is cursing the fig tree, I am looking forward to that one, too. :)
People tend break down jesus words to much to understand it when jesus says that his people hear him and his words they know it is true. So he gave the woman a parable and her answer showed her faith. He never called her anything. Jesus answered for this saying go thy way. The devil is gone out of thy daughter. Notice he said for thy saying. Simple. Jesus knew her faith and jesus said the the devil gone. Who else has the power to speak and it be done?

I want to start with 2 Timothy 3:16. I also want to do some definitions. 1) gentile- one not in covenant with God. 2) jew- those who lived in the Kingdom of Judah, (Judea ) specifically the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and most of the tribe of Levi. This group is also called the House of Judah. 3) The House of Israel - the northern 10 tribes taken into captivity by Assyria between 732 BC - 721 BC and then dispersed throughout the world since. A brief history of ancient Israel. After King Solomon's death Israel had a civil war. The 10 northern tribes were angry about unfair taxation without representation ( sounds familiar) so they broke away from the southern tribes and started their own country with their own king. In the Bible when "The House of Israel" is spoken of it is this group of people. They were not and are not Jews. This group is also sometimes referred to as "Ephraim" and infrequently as "Joseph". Jews did not exist as a people group until the 12 tribes split into "Israel" and "Judea". So Abraham was not a Jew. Actually Judah the son of Jacob wasn't even a Jew even though later his line would be called Jews. All of the patriarchs were Hebrews. God only divorced The House of Israel Jeremiah 3:8. But one of my favorite verses also comes from Jeremiah and the writer of Hebrews quotes it twice Jeremiah 31: 31-33, Hebrews 8:8-10, 10: 16. I want to leave you all with a question. Biblically what is sin? ( 1 John 3:4) Shalom and may each of you find the light and love of God's truth.
Mike, I watched one of your Jehovah Witness videos where you talked about a book that showed the Greek definitions side by side with The Watchtower definitions showing that they (the Watchtower) had inserted the words "all other" things regarding the deity of Christ. You said it was a book that was actually published by the Watchtower and that it might be hard to find. Can you tell me what the book is so I can track it down? ... Thanks for all you do. That would be the “Kingdom Interlinear”. You may be able to find it online but there is another option now. The JWs have a phone app which has the Kingdom Interlinear on it, and it’s free. It’s called “JW Library”.

@Whip'em up! I disagree with this fundamentally because, if you think about it, the Bible would not be as universal as it is if the concepts and applications were not black and white in their generality.
Jesus was focused on the lost sheep of the House of Israel. Jews are neither lost, nor of the House of Israel; they are of the Kingdom of Judah, distinct from the Kingdom of Israel. Jews hung around in Judea and then did a bunch of other weird things. The House of Israel was carried away by Assyria, mostly to the North. They have been "lost" ever since, only to be called back in the end days.
We all breathe the breath of God. No, we are not dogs regardless of our religion. I have had to accept painful remarks when battling for a cause. I think the issue is not to withdraw when someone says something we don't like. We have to rise above words.
I was taught the interpretation of yours most of my life. There is a pastor named Dr. Randy White as well as a handful of others who teach that God had a plan which was to use Isreal to reach the Gentiles or in other words to use the nation of Israel to bring individual salvation to all people (jew and Greek) which became available after the cross. Once I finally understood what dispensations were and that Jesus earthly ministry was for Israel and the offer of salvation for the world was not available until he arose from the grave. I really appreciate that you are preaching from scripture. PS there is a new book called Evangelical Garbage available at Dispensational Publishing that is the most timely book outside of scripture that I have ever read. We are right with God because according to 2 Corinthians 5:18-21. What I feel like I needed to do was to believe that he forgave all of sin back when he died on the cross but until I understood and believed it I could not be saved and have eternal life with God in heaven but I was forgiven as was everyone else even if they don’t believe it. I have heard false teachers use that passage to lead into universal salvation which is dead wrong. When I learned that paul taught the gospel of grace for the dispemstiom of the age of grace and I could be included because I believed in what was accomplished with the finished work of the cross there was a freedom in Christ from the curse of sin which he did away with at the cross I was really saved. Amén. I have been in my church for 20 years and it is of sound doctrine therefore not very popular or likable and it has always been very small of 60 people. But this of us which have stayed and not been miss lead have been able to see Gods goodness in our life.
This is exactly what is meant by to the Judahite first. The House of Israel was divorced first and then the house of Judah. upon fulfillment of the scriptures to read gather Israel the house of Judah would be reunited first and then the house of Israel. Many error because they do not understand the term Gentiles (Nations) and Jew (Judahite or Judean).
I agree with your explanation of being called a dog, but I also think that parable is very much speaking about how children are fed first and then the dogs. The crumbs are the overflows of blessings of God (and at that point a lot of children are rejecting God's bread of life). The dog (her) is seeking even the crumb knowing it is good and will heal her daughter. That's why Christ says her prayer was answered. The fact she accepted the role as a Dog shows her repentance and acceptance of Christ was real. That's what made her faith great.
Amazing teaching. I listened to this after listening to a very poor sermon from my pastor trying to explain this passage. He seemed embarrassed by this passage and made the woman the star of the passage and said we cannot really understand why Jesus said it. Unfortunately, he is a bit clueless regarding the Jewish and gentile teaching roles and does not understand or are willing to understand the role of the Jewish nation. I am so disappointed

Very good Mike! Excellent expository work. Being so far removed from biblical context, it takes some work getting there and from there, making sense of the passage. Just curious, what translation is being used? I know you used to use NKJV and was considering ESV. Curious where you've landed.
I tend to use the ESV more often than not but, for the sake of the Mark series, I am using the NASB. Since I can't find what I consider to be the "best" translation but can find several which seem good I try to reference multiple translations in my prep.

Whip em nice try at being clever but when it comes to God’s word, the Bible, you don’t know what you’re talking about because when you understand that it’s been written by about forty different authors over several thousand years and see that it does interpret itself and that it is outside our space time domain which makes it super natural no one can claim it’s a Chinese whisper

I’m in a place spiritually where I feel the need to be continually testing every message, every teacher/preacher, every belief I once thought was right that may or may not be scriptural. Im starting to think 🤔 i shouldn't be christian anymore. So a woman whos child is suffering comes to Jesus "GOD" for help and the creator of the universe calls her a Dog becuse shes not Jewish? It is only when she agrees with Jesus and accepts shes only worthy of the crumbs from Jewish tables is when he helps her? why Jewish people first ? Because its a Jewish made God? ... Seems that way...
It didn't occur to me that this verse could have been seen in a feminist context. To me it was always about the gentile vs Jewish issue from the start.
Hi Mike, I have enjoyed your lectures on your RUclips channel for years and they have always been very inspirational. Based on my reflections on this particular lecture of yours I would like to share the following for whatever it might be worth. Whilst our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ took on his human nature in the form of a Jew I do not read The new Testament in a way which neglects his care for the gentiles. In John chapter 4 we read about his special efforts to walk through Samaria to meet the woman at the well to reveal to her, a gentile woman, his very nature as the Messiah. This revelation makes her so excited that she is leaves her water jars behind to run back to share the good news with the very people she had tried to avoid because of her shame. And Jesus cared so much for her community that he stayed there with his disciples for two days! I read the account as moving and humourous. In Mark 7:24-30 we read about the Canaanite woman who desperately asks for Jesus’s help for her little daughter. A similar account is found in Matt 15:22-28. One may have different attitudes to dogs, but I doubt that to be called a dog is flattering in any cultural context. If you care for dogs you will feed them and not cast bread at them! What we notice is that this account in both gospels follows the account of Jesus saying that man is not defiled by what enters his mouth but what comes out of it. Referring to gentiles as cattle and dogs was part of the Pharisee self-righteous jargon and we know what Jesus thought about the Pharisees. I have the feeling that Jesus’s use of this dog language was a demonstration to his disciples of this point. Spoken by Jesus it was probably a shocking to hear as it is to read about it in the Bible had not his disciples had Jesus’s words about what defiles a man in fresh memory. My understanding is that Matthew's account defuses the situation by Jesus praising her for her great faith, something which apparently only happened in Jesus’s relationship with gentiles, including the Roman Centurion mentioned in Matthew 8:5-13. My reflections on Pharisee jargon to describe gentiles may be useful for understanding why Jesus was laid in a manger. Why not a breadbasket which can easily be moved around as opposed to a manger which is a heavy piece of stable furniture? Jesus would later refer to himself as the bread of life, so would that not be more appropriate? I have the feeling that putting Jesus in a manger was a slightly humorous way of foretelling that it would be the gentiles, the cattle, who would be the first to accept his call to feed on him!
@Per Bondesen I read recently that in that time wood was scarce so it was saved for things that really needed wood, roof beams etc and stone being plentiful was used as much as possible. It is likely then that the manger was made of stone and the shepherds who were probably watching the flock for passover, would have seen Jesus, laid on the stone manger, swaddled in strips of cloth, (as the spotless lamb was swaddled to keep it clean and spotless for sacrifice at the Temple,) and would instinctively have seen the connection. The manger would have resembled the altar. It's an interesting thought. The oil and salt used after childbirth was also used in Temple sacrifices it said. I wish I could remember where I saw it.
The Canaanite woman had great faith in Jesus who she had heard about, because she persisted despite the obstacles and even seemingly from Jesus. "He answered her not a word" and He (Jesus) answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” which appears to completely shut the door on her. At that point she makes a simple plea for mercy, "Lord help me" Then Jesus replies " “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” On the surface this seems like a refusal but as Mike said when Jesus said the children "first" this includes the possibility of hope for her though a Canaanite. And in this statement Jesus is saying that children are important and should be fed, and this to a woman who's little daughter was oppressed by an unclean spirit! She is publicly praised by Jesus for her great faith and is really only one of two people who's faith is particularly noted and this highly commended in the gospels. And Jesus affirms her humanity which was never in doubt with the words "O woman great is your faith." Jesus was always going to heal her daughter as Mike said.
I watched this video twice and though I thought understood it did not make me settle on the issue. Whilst reading matt 15 the bulb just went on. To my amazement it was the very thing taught here. This has taught me that studying the word is more beneficial than just hearing. This has taught me (as a gentile) to appreciate the gospel even more learning that i am a partaker in a promise that belonged to jews but through Christ found worthy to partake. I also learnt that in His ministry on earth He was sent to the Jews then later after His ressurection through His Spirit to the gentiles. Him helping this woman is an act of mercy.
I was once proud and arrogant.. I worked for years with physical problems.. but... "I worked" and all the time I was working I was judging others who were not.. "Must be nice to sit home and get paid on welfare while I work so they can have cable TV!" would be my favorite thing to rant.. Then I got sick and it didn't let up.. I was missing so much work and it was putting me in the hospital.. now to be fair.. I was going to church at this time in my life and had considered myself to being a follower of Christ.. but things didn't get any better and as time went by with me missing so much work.. we were unable to pay our bills and that also included the house.. we kept trying to get the banks to help us but I was making too much money (in truth I was making no money due to no time for missing work with vacation days...) long story short... my doctor and I talked about me going on disability.. as I started that.. I had to go to welfare to get help.. still.. the fact that we were going to lose the house and we had NO where to go.. My pride and foolishness drove us both the end of our ropes.. I wasn't suicidal but I didn't want to live.. soon they came and took the car.. we had no way of getting food then.. I remember lying in bed with a heart so heave it hurt.. I finally called out to God. I told he I couldn't fix this problem and that if he would take care of my wife I would be happy for it and that I was sorry for my sin.. the church we as attending had shut it's doors and though good friends did help as much as they could.. it just wasn't enough.. then the day came with the call from the bank came.. and God made a way for us too keep the home!! friends of ours gave us a car *that's still running after all these years!!* I remember reading the book of Job.. I wanted to know why God did what he did too Job.. and at the end.. God's answer was simple... he asked Job... "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world?" .. how far had this proud man fallen... and yet.. like Peter walking on the water... Jesus had reached out his hand and pulled me up!!! I'm now on disability and yes.. we have the internet.. O.o.. God meets our needs and is kind enough to let us enjoy somethings in life.. we have food on our table and yes.. the old car is still running us down the road for now.. I made good money back in my day.. no so much now.. but we have what we need.. I got Baptized just this last year.. all this being said.... Good Preaching and to all who read this... @@bailujen8052 That’s not entirely true. if you truly are saved you should be moving your life in a direction that aligns with God‘s will. obviously the ultimate goal of Christians is to evangelize but some people evangelize like street preaching and other people do it in their workplace or with their friends. been constantly busy evangelizing is not required to be saved. we are saved without works but the works that we do after we are saved prove we are saved. The most important thing to do once you are saved is to build a deep relationship with Jesus (praying and reading the Bible often) and by doing so he will change your heart to want to evangelize.
Jesus didn't call her a scavenger dog (kuón), but rather a little dog (kunarion). It isn't a racial slur and it isn't even a reference to her sin. It is just an analogy meaning that she is not part of the chosen people of God. Recall that not all of God's chosen people were even saved, so there is no saved/lost or righteous/sinful contrast here. The fact is that this woman was actually a believer. All Jesus is saying is that the kingdom is to Israel first. Not to the saved first, because not all Israel was saved, but simply to God's chosen nation first.
Dude, you were never a dog. People just want to run around in circles trying to claim jesus was perfect and there was no logical reason anyone would have found him offensive.
In reality Jesus hit a bunch of people with a whip and overturned the currency exchange tables inside the sacred temple. Neither the Jews nor Roman's would be pleased with that. He DEFINATLY WOULD BE ARRESTED. Also he was trying at least to become king of the jews, creating an independent judea from roman rule, which given how shitty living with the Roman's was is understandable.
Basically weather you find his actions morally right or not, there are very obvious reasons why he would have upset both the Roman's in huge ways.
And yet when he dies we are all supposed to be shocked.
He did call the lady a dog, jesus was actually super rude sometimes and didn't always have the best manners. People have to reconcile the "actual jesus" moving in the historical context of his time with "perfect church jesus".
Anyway sorry for the rant. Don't let the world guilt you into thinking you were "a dog". As much as I do love dogs. You've always been a person, just one who is growing and changing in the world.

Thanks Mike! I needed this. I have been slack in my prayers for my "agnostic" husband to find Christ Jesus. (I was too...until about six years ago....in our 18 year marriage). He grew up Catholic and defends that, but not Christ Jesus. I knew I needed to continue in my prayers ...though may not be answered the way I think they should be. Sigh...please pray for me...that I lose the pride that keeps me from trusting God more. I know He is good and very, very, very patient. I praise Him for that......or we'd all be lost. This passage is also found in Matthew. I didn't know for the longest what this passage meant. But about a month ago, I was reading the gospels and I came across this passage. My eyes were opened and I love this passage. Even us Gentiles are part of God's Kingdom. "I will have a people that are not my people". 🙂
This passage is a foreshadowing of God's people.
But you only become people of God if you accept CHRIST into your heart and pick up your cross and follow him

This video is relatively old now but Mike if you see this please know that this video is one of my favourites because for some time this part of the Matthew and Mark gospels used to make me nervous as I heard all sorts from heretical groups such as the BHI and Jewish professors (only very few, thankfully) that I being of gentile descent was doomed and forever deemed as a dog.
But the real reason I love this video is because it did not cuddle me in a way that the message was watered down. But it made me realise my pride and Bible-belt syndrome (although I'm from the UK). I was raised going to church and the Lord certainly has been very patient with me and developed me but I was still under the impression that because I was born in the gracious era whereby in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Gentile - I assumed myself as having always been a child. I knew that without Jesus I was a wretch but for some reason hearing the word "dog" insulted me. Because being raised in a Christian family, I did not understand the Jew and Gentile tension that really was profound in the Bible.
I forgot that my own ancestors were not followers of Christ. They practised evil things.
This video was both encouraging yet convicting. Because in this time of national and ethnic identity - whereby everyone strives to pride themselves in their cultural heritage (and I am proud of my ethnicity) - it is too easy to forget that it is nothing, in the end. Especially for those in Christ.
Had I followed the traditional religions of my mother and father's ancestral heritage, I would have practised all sorts of eastern and celtic things. Yet at some point in my family line - by the grace of God - He disrupted the pattern. Yet even then, we were still loved by Him as His creation. With some of the things ancient Indonesians, ancient Irish Celts and ancient Britons and Danes did - I could very well see the detestable dog-like scavenging essence of my family. Yet even then Jesus said "pet"... My ancestors would have done things that I loathe and spit at. That was my heritage.
Yet God said "little dog... You shall now be My child, as well."
And that's amazing.
Now, this part of the Matthew and Mark gospels is one of my favourites. And ironically, it makes me even more proud of my ethnicity in the sense that it is evidence of the love of the God of Israel.
I mean - imagine looking at the ancient religions at the time, all set on death and focused on their own central peoples. And then one sees the prophecies of the Jewish religion and it promises to speak to the non-Jew, too. That its Messiah would be the Saviour of the world. That is quite astounding.
Anyway... Sorry for this ridiculously long message but I could hardly contain my joy over the epiphany I received when I first watched this video!
Whether you're a rebellious child of the heritage or a dog by heritage - go to the Lord who wants to make you His beloved child!

Dogs referring to people is part of the revelation given to John recorded at Revellation 22:15 .Yes folks some percentage of those raised in the second resurrection event are referred to as dogs .

This is the first time I heard of the 2 different dog words used in scripture. Major paradigm shift here.
Absolutely agree and although I understood that it was to teach us a valuable, needed lesson, I knew about the importance of the "children first" and that we were not excluded from salvation (and God did not see us as less than or as dogs) knowing that the word is more akin to "pet" and not "dog" (as it is used throughout scripture as a low scavenger who deserves no love) it has totally transformed my understanding of this passage and I thank the Almighty for this teaching and for Mike's work for our saviour

humility and humbleness plays a part in her child receives her deliverance, because she was not part of the kingdom at that time .
Her faith was great. She had every reason to turn away in anger and blame God yet she knew she was in need of God's mercy.
So, why was humility and humbleness not a "prerequisite" for the Jews he healed? Showing favoritism is never good.
She was not a Jew and when Jesus made that statement she would have be angry and left she knew what she wants for her child and she was able to seen beyond her situation.

Possibly if you are binging you were/are starving. Been there.
When you are starving you tend to eat too fast and get full too quickly.
It takes a while to realize there is plenty and pace. Maybe take the time to go slowly, to appreciate, and absorb.
Possibly you are wanting them to be shorter to get to that one episode that will satisfy? I hope you find it, but also stay the course through all that is here.

children . . . little dogs: Since dogs were unclean according to the Mosaic Law, the Scriptures often use the term in a derogatory sense. (Le 11:27; Mt 7:6; Php 3:2; Re 22:15) However, in both Matthew’s account (15:26) and Mark’s account of Jesus’ conversation, the diminutive form of the term meaning “little dog” or “house dog” is used, softening the comparison. Perhaps this indicates that Jesus used an affectionate term for household pets in non-Jewish homes. By likening Israelites to “children” and non-Jews to “little dogs,” Jesus evidently wanted to indicate an order of priority. In a household that had both children and dogs, the children would be fed first.
Why dint Jesus call the Roman centurion who asked for healing for his servant a dog? After all he was a gentile too

People tend break down jesus words to much to understand it when jesus says that his people hear him and his words they know it is true. So he gave the woman a parable and her answer showed her faith. He never called her anything. Jesus answered for this saying go thy way. The devil is gone out of thy daughter. I want to start with 2 Timothy 3:16. I also want to do some definitions. 1) gentile- one not in covenant with God. 2) jew- those who lived in the Kingdom of Judah, (Judea ) specifically the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and most of the tribe of Levi. This group is also called the House of Judah. 3) The House of Israel - the northern 10 tribes taken into captivity by Assyria between 732 BC - 721 BC and then dispersed throughout the world since. A brief history of ancient Israel. After King Solomon's death Israel had a civil war. The 10 northern tribes were angry about unfair taxation without representation ( sounds familiar) so they broke away from the southern tribes and started their own country with their own king. In the Bible when "The House of Israel" is spoken of it is this group of people. They were not and are not Jews. This group is also sometimes referred to as "Ephraim" and infrequently as "Joseph". Jews did not exist as a people group until the 12 tribes split into "Israel" and "Judea". So Abraham was not a Jew. Actually Judah the son of Jacob wasn't even a Jew even though later his line would be called Jews. All of the patriarchs were Hebrews. God only divorced The House of Israel Jeremiah 3:8. But one of my favorite verses also comes from Jeremiah and the writer of Hebrews quotes it twice Jeremiah 31: 31-33, Hebrews 8:8-10, 10: 16. I want to leave you all with a question. Biblically what is sin? ( 1 John 3:4) Shalom and may each of you find the light and love of God's truth.

Mike, I watched one of your Jehovah Witness videos where you talked about a book that showed the Greek definitions side by side with The Watchtower definitions showing that they (the Watchtower) had inserted the words "all other" things regarding the deity of Christ. You said it was a book that was actually published by the Watchtower and that it might be hard to find. Can you tell me what the book is so I can track it down? ... Thanks for all you do. That would be the “Kingdom Interlinear”. You may be able to find it online but there is another option now. The JWs have a phone app which has the Kingdom Interlinear on it, and it’s free. It’s called “JW Library”.

Jesus was focused on the lost sheep of the House of Israel. Jews are neither lost, nor of the House of Israel; they are of the Kingdom of Judah, distinct from the Kingdom of Israel. Jews hung around in Judea and then did a bunch of other weird things. The House of Israel was carried away by Assyria, mostly to the North. They have been "lost" ever since, only to be called back in the end days.

I was taught the interpretation of yours most of my life. There is a pastor named Dr. Randy White as well as a handful of others who teach that God had a plan which was to use Isreal to reach the Gentiles or in other words to use the nation of Israel to bring individual salvation to all people (jew and Greek) which became available after the cross. Once I finally understood what dispensations were and that Jesus earthly ministry was for Israel and the offer of salvation for the world was not available until he arose from the grave. I really appreciate that you are preaching from scripture. PS there is a new book called Evangelical Garbage available at Dispensational Publishing that is the most timely book outside of scripture that I have ever read. We are right with God because according to 2 Corinthians 5:18-21. What I feel like I needed to do was to believe that he forgave all of sin back when he died on the cross but until I understood and believed it I could not be saved and have eternal life with God in heaven but I was forgiven as was everyone else even if they don’t believe it. I have heard false teachers use that passage to lead into universal salvation which is dead wrong. When I learned that paul taught the gospel of grace for the dispemstiom of the age of grace and I could be included because I believed in what was accomplished with the finished work of the cross there was a freedom in Christ from the curse of sin which he did away with at the cross I was really saved. Amén. I have been in my church for 20 years and it is of sound doctrine therefore not very popular or likable and it has always been very small of 60 people. But this of us which have stayed and not been miss lead have been able to see Gods goodness in our life.

This is exactly what is meant by to the Judahite first. The House of Israel was divorced first and then the house of Judah. upon fulfillment of the scriptures to read gather Israel the house of Judah would be reunited first and then the house of Israel. Many error because they do not understand the term Gentiles (Nations) and Jew (Judahite or Judean).

I agree with your explanation of being called a dog, but I also think that parable is very much speaking about how children are fed first and then the dogs. The crumbs are the overflows of blessings of God (and at that point a lot of children are rejecting God's bread of life). The dog (her) is seeking even the crumb knowing it is good and will heal her daughter. That's why Christ says her prayer was answered.
The fact she accepted the role as a Dog shows her repentance and acceptance of Christ was real. That's what made her faith great.
Amazing teaching. I listened to this after listening to a very poor sermon from my pastor trying to explain this passage. He seemed embarrassed by this passage and made the woman the star of the passage and said we cannot really understand why Jesus said it. Unfortunately, he is a bit clueless regarding the Jewish and gentile teaching roles and does not understand or are willing to understand the role of the Jewish nation.

I tend to use the ESV more often than not but, for the sake of the Mark series, I am using the NASB. Since I can't find what I consider to be the "best" translation but can find several which seem good I try to reference multiple translations in my prep.

I have enjoyed your lectures on your RUclips channel for years and they have always been very inspirational. Based on my reflections on this particular lecture of yours I would like to share the following for whatever it might be worth.
Whilst our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ took on his human nature in the form of a Jew I do not read The new Testament in a way which neglects his care for the gentiles.
In John chapter 4 we read about his special efforts to walk through Samaria to meet the woman at the well to reveal to her, a gentile woman, his very nature as the Messiah. This revelation makes her so excited that she is leaves her water jars behind to run back to share the good news with the very people she had tried to avoid because of her shame. And Jesus cared so much for her community that he stayed there with his disciples for two days! I read the account as moving and humourous.
In Mark 7:24-30 we read about the Canaanite woman who desperately asks for Jesus’s help for her little daughter. A similar account is found in Matt 15:22-28. One may have different attitudes to dogs, but I doubt that to be called a dog is flattering in any cultural context. If you care for dogs you will feed them and not cast bread at them!
What we notice is that this account in both gospels follows the account of Jesus saying that man is not defiled by what enters his mouth but what comes out of it. Referring to gentiles as cattle and dogs was part of the Pharisee self-righteous jargon and we know what Jesus thought about the Pharisees. I have the feeling that Jesus’s use of this dog language was a demonstration to his disciples of this point. Spoken by Jesus it was probably a shocking to hear as it is to read about it in the Bible had not his disciples had Jesus’s words about what defiles a man in fresh memory. My understanding is that Matthew's account defuses the situation by Jesus praising her for her great faith, something which apparently only happened in Jesus’s relationship with gentiles, including the Roman Centurion mentioned in Matthew 8:5-13.
My reflections on Pharisee jargon to describe gentiles may be useful for understanding why Jesus was laid in a manger. Why not a breadbasket which can easily be moved around as opposed to a manger which is a heavy piece of stable furniture? Jesus would later refer to himself as the bread of life, so would that not be more appropriate? I have the feeling that putting Jesus in a manger was a slightly humorous way of foretelling that it would be the gentiles, the cattle, who would be the first to accept his call to feed on him!
@Per Bondesen I read recently that in that time wood was scarce so it was saved for things that really needed wood, roof beams etc and stone being plentiful was used as much as possible. It is likely then that the manger was made of stone and the shepherds who were probably watching the flock for passover, would have seen Jesus, laid on the stone manger, swaddled in strips of cloth, (as the spotless lamb was swaddled to keep it clean and spotless for sacrifice at the Temple,) and would instinctively have seen the connection. The manger would have resembled the altar. It's an interesting thought. The oil and salt used after childbirth was also used in Temple sacrifices it said. I wish I could remember where I saw it.
The Canaanite woman had great faith in Jesus who she had heard about, because she persisted despite the obstacles and even seemingly from Jesus. "He answered her not a word" and He (Jesus) answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” which appears to completely shut the door on her.
At that point she makes a simple plea for mercy, "Lord help me" Then Jesus replies " “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
On the surface this seems like a refusal but as Mike said when Jesus said the children "first" this includes the possibility of hope for her though a Canaanite. And in this statement Jesus is saying that children are important and should be fed, and this to a woman who's little daughter was oppressed by an unclean spirit!
She is publicly praised by Jesus for her great faith and is really only one of two people who's faith is particularly noted and this highly commended in the gospels. And Jesus affirms her humanity which was never in doubt with the words "O woman great is your faith."
Jesus was always going to heal her daughter as Mike said.
I watched this video twice and though I thought understood it did not make me settle on the issue. Whilst reading matt 15 the bulb just went on. To my amazement it was the very thing taught here. This has taught me that studying the word is more beneficial than just hearing.
This has taught me (as a gentile) to appreciate the gospel even more learning that i am a partaker in a promise that belonged to jews but through Christ found worthy to partake.
I also learnt that in His ministry on earth He was sent to the Jews then later after His ressurection through His Spirit to the gentiles.
Him helping this woman is an act of mercy.
