I have one of these 4l60e trans an I've had it rebuilt an nonthin but problems for what I have spend on the rebuild I bet I could have flown to u with the teams an back an I'm not sayin cheaper I'm sayin I would have been much happier with your build sir absolute amazing
Very professional knowledgeable install. i watched a GM MasterTech instructor perform this very build on my '00 Chevy 2500 Express trans a few years back, now i'm getting ready to do it on my son's 2003 S10 4wd...wish me luck. Thanks for the video , it is a big help on doing this the right way.
This is what I so need. I have a GMC Safari that pulls a 2000 pound single axle trailer and it goes over a curvy mountain pass to deliver in the city. So there is a lot of hills and corners to accelerate out of. I need heavy duty. This is the weak link in the van, otherwise, I totally love the van.
You put the pistons in while yackin away, lol. I been trying to figure out how to do that part all day, lol. Till I seen this. Thanks for sharing, you been a big help.
You are the first person that's been more helpful than all thr rest. As far as I know my transmission has never been rebuilt yet it has this z-pack in it. The factory manual says it's model dependent and would have 5, 6, or 7 frictions. The ATSG manual was useless and the other transmission shops I've contacted were useless. You on the other hand know about the 7 plates and have the mileage almost down to a T. My hummer H2 lost 3-4 at 85000. There's too much free play with the 6 plates and mine has 7 and looks exactly like the z-pack when I removed them. I've run out of money at this point so I'm going to have to clean up the steels and reuse them but I did order 7 .065 plates.
This is kinda funny. I was actually looking into purchasing an H2 that had it's 3rd/4th go out and have been browsing videos to see how hard it'd be to rebuild. I definitely prefer seeing how Hiram did the job compared to some other videos (saw one where the guys were beating on one with screwdrivers). I understand transmissions are durable, but they are also components that require tight tolerances that shouldn't be abused.
@@danielkapp9468 My rebuild worked out great so far. I put a few hundred miles on it before I stomped on it on the highway. I upgraded a few parts like the sunshell while I was in there. I didn't mess with the pump though, ordered a rebuilt one on ebay from Chicago transmission that had an upgraded boost valve. I had a couple clips I had to replace because I didn't have the right tools but now I do. Also had to replace what looks like a washer but it's a thrust bearing or something. It was chewed up and one side in pieces. I think the worst part was resizing the solid teflon rings and not chopping them when putting it back together. I bought a tub of Transgel and I lubed EVERYTHING except the clutch plates and steels.....lol
I used to install transgo's commercial clutch pack in 700R4s many years ago. The fictions and steels were made by Alto, they were of thinner design, same concept as Zpack, only Altos frictions had lining on both sides. I still have left over stock plates.
Nice build so far Hiram. His truck will be a new animal with that converter and it'll help his 60' times and bring the engine to it's power band quicker. I ran a TCI 8" 6000 RPM stall race converter in my altered and thank God for my wheelie bars!
I wish I could work with this guy for two weeks. Transmissions have always made me nervous. I see alot of guys who remove and replace but i have always been curious about the breakdown & rebuild.
Great Info. I think the next step up from the Z-Pack, especially for the 3-4 Clutches, is the Sonnax Smart-Tech Input Housing Kit with Billet Input Shaft using either Eight .067" frictions with seven .095" steels, or Nine .062" frictions with eight .077" steels. The Bolt on plate on the Sonnax Drum is very top quality. We all know the downfall of the 4L60E is the 3-4 Clutch Pack Failure.
thanks soo awesome work ! im converting a 4L60E from a 4X4 blazer for my 2nd gen camaro it has a built higher compression 355 with stage 5 aluminum heads and 4.11 gears. ineed 1st and 2nd gear to be not as low or high in number not higher in number. iloved that planetary for the TH350 for big blocks it had 2.10 and 1.40 gearing it was perfect with my smallblock it knocked out a full second off my ET because the spread is so even, the only downside was 3rd gear with 4.20 wasn't very street.
Hello Hiram I see this video is old but have a question. I am building a 4L60e for my son. The kit we have has the z pak cluthes. Raybestoes says clearance should be .050-.070. Without the extra "shim" I have .080 clearance. With the extra s him I have .038 clearance. We have decided to go with the .038 clearance. In your opinion will it live with .038 clearance?
Enjoy your videos man i have a question been trying to figure out why my transmission does a hard shift at first to second gear at 17 mph. Sometimes wen I began to drive the car for the day it does great shifts at 12 or 13 mph but in a couple minutes goes to shifting hard at 17mph. The other gears shift perfect. I had my tranny rebuild I already put 5k miles on it and itdidn't use to do it before I rebuild it. It's a 92 cadillac brougham

Awsome vids! I watch and learn. Would like you to do a vid on Uprating and J modding an earlier model Ford 4R70-W / A0D-E. And the difference between building for street/strip and heavy towing/high continuous torque loading. thanks.
+Billy Bracewell I'm not sure about the J mod. I've seen it but I'm not sure if it would work. Or what its supposed to do. Some things about it doesn't make sense to me. But regarding the performance upgrades on those, I will make some videos for it.
In my pre wheelchair past i have done this. It is only a mod for making it shift VERY firmly. WITHOUT the "slip" of softer shifting units. THAT is just for conserving your unit. the uprating and settings for continuous high torque loads is more my concern. (hint) producing a simple tranny that can be easily rebuilt for high horsepower heavy torque apps.
AWSOME!! FYI the "jmod" only makes it shift firmer and harder. This saves life expectancy as it reduces or eliminates the "slippage" that accrues for "soft sift" situations. THANKS for replying bro.! I will be watching. I have a much modded 94 ford lightning. 1 of the only 780 so built before step side and tonneau covers.yeah, no more E4OD. she now sports a cobra GT500 engine in front of a weakling soon to be rebuilt/upgraded 4R70W/AODE. Great video, Very easy to follow along to.I have a question for you .Hope you can help me out.I have 98 Silverado 4x4 with a 4l60e with burnt up 3-4 assembly. I picked up a good 4l60e out of a 2000 4x4.I found out the hard way that torque converter from the 2000 will not go into the crankshaft of the 98.My question is, Is it possible to swap out the drum and input shaft from the 2000 into the 98. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with us!Have you ever used the Alto power pack if so what do you think of it?You are the best Hiram !Gracias

So to be clear... a 1998 and up model 3/4 drum can be used in a typical older 700r4...in order to get that 7 disc stack package? It's totally possible to put a 1998 drum in a older 700r4 with no other problems?????? (That's a question)
I've been a tech in the Valley of The Sun, AZ for 15 years but never once rebuilt a transmission. Watching your videos has inspired me to learn more about transmission failures and rebuilds. I was just given a 98 S-10 Blazer that needs a rebuilt engine and fresh trans rebuild by the looks of the fluid. Seems like it was stuck in Second Gear at all speeds. Maybe a solenoid issue but all of that will be replaced. It will be my first Full Transmission Rebuild. What Do you think about rebuilding Nissan CVTs? Thanks for all your videos!
Really like your videos-very informative. What do you recommend I do to upgrade my 95 2wd suburban 4l60E. I've had 2 transmissions installed and I think they keep putting junk back in. I tow a light trailer once in a while but it's starting to slip in 3rd and overdrive. Was looking at the SS monster in a box with the 7 red eagle frictions. YOu think the z pak better?
I'm just getting into the rebuilding idea because the 4l60e is going out on my 1996 Blazer 4x4 . I need advice on what to purchase because I'm ordering off of Amazon but the heavy duty / performance rebuild kits are said not to be compatible with my make and model. All they offer is a Alto rebuild kit .
hey man, love the videos. got a couple questions if you dont mind. 03 gmc 1500. 5.3 auto 4l60e. has flare up shifting. 1-2 then 2-3. sometimes takes about 3-4 seconds to take gear and sometimes it is normal. All gears hold strong after shifting with no slipping. Could this be 2-4 servo or accumulator pistons? What's your thoughts.
I am in the middle of my transmission rebuild and was hoping you could answer a question. 1999 Silverado 4.8 with 4l60e. I bought a rebuild kit from Alto and it has a 3-4 power pack which is similar in concept to the Z Pak. The instructions aren't very good for me. My OEM has 6 fiber and 5 steels not including the back or top plates. The power pack has 9 frictions and 8 steels not including the back and top plates. Can I just use the stock back and top plates with the power pack so long as the clearance is the same as the OEM? My OEM stack is 26mm and the Power Pack is 26.4mm. Second thing is my trans didn't have the 5 load springs in it so I ordered some to reinstall. My thought is I can use the thinner 9 disks with the stock back and top plates so long as my clearance is the same as stock specs and adding the missing load springs will help keep the disks apart so they get oil when not applied. Any advice would be appreciated.
Mr. Gutierrez, I would like to get your opinion. I will be having my 4l60e rebuilt it's in a single cab 03 Silverado its at 425ish horse power I daily drive this truck. my trans builder is telling me I don't need the sonnex smart tech drum. I figured it would improve longevity of the trans. I would like to know from you what should I be having installed to ensure my trans lasts.
Victor Lopez Everything helps, I'm getting a rebuild 4L60e for a blazer ls swap . I was really lucky that I found a 4L65e ( 5 planetary) I bought Raybestos , drum , selenoid $300 so far in parts .
I have a 2002 Chevy suburban 1500 that I use as a daily driver and also to go to the desert where I carry a heavy load. What set up would you recommend? I am looking to upgrade my transmission as I’m going on 205k miles on the original trans and motor.
thx hiram. geat videos question what do u think I did wrong 4l60e moves forward no reverse any advice will be appreciated. thx great video, keep it up .
Thanks for the video!! Just have a couple of questions. With using a 98 drum on a 700r4, can you still use the 700r4 pump and torque converter? Thanks for your videos again!!
Hiram, I have ATSG manuals for the 700-R4--4L60 and 4L60E units, as well as "updates" manuals for both. On page 78 of the 700-R4---4L60 update manual, it refers to the 3-4 clutch apply ring with the stamped #7, which it states was implemented beginning January 5th, 1993. Not trying to admonish a "Master Tech" such as yourself, just trying to pass along information that I myself have acquired--you state that it's a '98 or newer model piece--maybe because you do so many different model years it was a "mixup" on your part? Be advised, PLEASE--I plan on starting to rebuild these units, beginning with my '91 K1500's 700-R4. I bought videos from The Transmission Bench, for the 4L60E, and 4L80E. I'll never be as good at this stuff as you, even if you were doing it in your sleep, but LIKE you, I have high standards. Integrity of the unit will be Priority #1, on EVERY build, PERIOD...
hey man wondering if you could help me out I have a 2011 Silverado with 4l60e I have first and second gear doesn’t catch 3rd or 4th. What could he the issues I was thinking about replacing the shift solenoids and the torque converter solenoid
Hello, and thank you for your videos. I have a 4l60e needs rebuilt and is a junk vehicle so should be a good trainer....I just don;t know where to get the rebuild kit??? I have asked around some auto parts stores and they act like they have no idea. Can you direct me to a source for this please? And Thank You again
Very helpful videos. Definitely knows his stuff. I've seen a few posts asking for shop location. Has anyone figured out where his shop is located, if so please post. Thanks.
hi I need some help if you can I have a 1992 gmck 1500 4x4 and was towing a 20ft motorhome and backing it up and heard a slight ping noise and now no reverse, when you first start the truck and put it in revers it wants to go but stops then acts like neutral but doesn't want to roll in reverse hardly at all, it still shifts in 1,2,3 but shifts later 25mph and harder I want to know if this is re buildable b4 getting a kit thanks for your videos and help
What is the cost difference or estimate to build a 4L60E bulletproof transmission with clutches etc to last for a long time. I have had 3 tansmissins already and thinking go 4L80E instead. What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you Hiram for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I always heard that using BW Hi Energy 7 frictions and thick steels handles the heat better than Z pack and their thin steel/friction combo. Is there apply and/or exhaust circuit mods that you do to minimize heat? Also, do you ever use the Sonnax Smart-Tech input housing to eliminate apply plate flex? If so, on what type of application? Thank you again!
Depends on performance/towing. BW and stock input drum works fine for most applications. For HD use go to 9 BW frictions with thinner steels or the z-pak. I wouldn't worry about the input drum unless you are drag racing. Run a proper external trans cooler to keep temps down.
Hi Joe, do you have to take anything else apart besides the torque converter before getting to the clutch pack assembly? I'm thinking of rebuilding my 4l60 (trans leaked out fluid before and was driven on low trans fluid), which causes delayed engagement (acceleration delay before going into gear) but I want to make sure there isn't any more surprises, as taking down the transmission will already be painful enough (no lift available). thanks
Hey Hiram, I'm a certified Automotive technician, and I've watched alot of your videos, and they have helped me alot. I'm a self taught builder. I was wondering if you could do a build on a 6T75? Ive done a few of those recently, and was looking for a video you've made but could only find dissasembly and common problems you've made, and also maybe some tips on testing the Tehcem on this transaxle? Your knowledge is priceless, and I'm sure I'm not the only Tech you have helped tremendously! Thanks for your time making these great videos.
What do you think about the Alto Z-pack eliminator? They claim it's better than the raybestos Z-pack I'm think about pulling apart my 4L60e in my 99 trans am cuz I lost my 3-4 again this year after a rebuild.
Martinez1701a I want info you on the Alto Z-pack eliminator kit. Listen I was going to do the same thing until did my research after asking the same question. If you search everything that comes in the kit they are the same kit but the only difference is the top pressure plate. But if you don't believe me search part number and specs

The problen with this transmission is it doesn't shift to 3 and 4 would you like give me more advise or i need buy a new one and this is spensive
Check power going to the transmission. Pin E. Ignition switch is common issue with the contacts getting fowled on that circuit. If voltage ⚡️ is about 2 volts ⚡️ switch no good.
Since my 98 Chevy is in “limp mode”, and I already tried changing both solenoids, with the same problem still present, do I just need to buy the 3-4 clutch pack that your showing ? Then remove only those old worn out parts from just the top of the assembly ? My truck is a daily driver to work with no heavy hauling or trailer use... Hope to hear from you soon. Mike in Iowa.
I know it sounds silly but did you check the fuse? Saw the same thing before. Guy tried replacing solenoids and it still acted the same. Turned out to be the fuse
Glad to see you use the return springs. I get mine for free out of the trash where most builders throw them.

All they offer is a Alto rebuild kit .
great information
hey man, love the videos. got a couple questions if you dont mind. What's your thoughts.
great video

Everything helps, I'm getting a rebuild 4L60e for a blazer ls swap .
I was really lucky that I found a 4L65e ( 5 planetary) I bought Raybestos , drum , selenoid $300 so far in parts .
Adds $600 to the build
Excellent video information on the 4l60e. what about the gaskets on the forward clutch?
I have to change mine out. which way
they go.
Is wondering about the part numbers you are using for the 3-4 clutch
I have a 2002 Chevy suburban 1500 that I use as a daily driver and also to go to the desert where I carry a heavy load. What set up would you recommend? I am looking to upgrade my transmission as I’m going on 205k miles on the original trans and motor.
Hey I liked the video a lot very informative. I was wondering if you had a parts list or part numbers available. Thanks in advance.
thx hiram. geat videos
question what do u think I did wrong 4l60e moves forward no reverse any advice will be appreciated. thx great video, keep it up .
How do you fit the load springs without hitting external clutches when using z pack
Where did you get the extra wide band? Transgo, Sonnax?
Thanks for the video!! Just have a couple of questions. With using a 98 drum on a 700r4, can you still use the 700r4 pump and torque converter? Thanks for your videos again!!
Como puedo hacer el 4t0 cambio mas firme de una 700r4 me podrás ayudar veo todos tus videos saludos desde Mexicali baja califas norte

Hiram, great video , question : can i combine this zpack with the Corvette servo 2nd & 4th ??
Yes
I love the Z-pak. I would love to hear more about your G35. What year is it and what have you done to it performance wise?
Hello, and thank you for your videos. I have a 4l60e needs rebuilt and is a junk vehicle so should be a good trainer....I just don;t know where to get the rebuild kit??? I have asked around some auto parts stores and they act like they have no idea. Can you direct me to a source for this please? And Thank You again
I noticed you didnt show the small green seal that goes in the forward drum to seal forward and brake clutch oil.
hey, you are the boss !!!!!!
What's the1998 and up part called that the Z-PAK clutch rings sit in? Can you buy these new or do you have to source used?
Nice job! I lost 3rd n 4th... how much you charge for that same set up?
Thank you
Very helpful videos.

What are your thoughts on this?
great job! I'm also using that sonnax drum with 9 clutches and 8 plates. works badass. where you do your jobs?
What is the main cause of the 3-4 clutches burn up with everything brand new?.
Will a 4l60e out of a 2007 Yukon xl 4x4 work in a 2003 Chevy Tahoe z71 4x4?
@@rockroll9513 Thank you for the feedback.
When you said the Z Pak will work on a 700R4, you just need a 98 and up drum? You mean 88 and up, correct?
Does the 88 have the 7 marked on it?
@@JM-yx1lm im using a '96 60E internals in my 700 build
'93 and up, according to my ATSG updates manual for that unit...
I repair alot of 4l60s with the 3-4s burnt out of them .
this is very helpful! does the bonded piston come with this kit?
+joe wisman The piston is separate
Hi Joe,
do you have to take anything else apart besides the torque converter before getting to the clutch pack assembly?

@@irvingolivissr.3172 are they both better than the the ac delco 3-4 pack?
@@Executnr thanks for the info. I'm thinking about the zpak in my 91 Silverado
what rebuild kit did you use for this build i tow a trailer alot and i need to know what kit will be the best
There's a lot of options, from Transgo to Superior to Fairbanks to B&M and the list goes on. It depends on how are you going to use your vehicle.
Assuming you are talking about the recalibration kit the video only mentions the frictions.
@@AutomaticTransmission well I work construction and tow an enclosed trailer so mostly hauling stuff. I looked at TCI rebuild kits but I’d rather hear from someone who has experience in this before
So z-pack won't work on 93-97modle without changing that drum🤷 Good no either way 🤙
that's what I'm going to be doing on my 2008 Chevy Colorado 2.9L 4L60E trans I bought a level 2 1/2 rebuild kit
and doing high performance red alto clutches
the rebuild kit cost me $845.00
Hi friend i have a Van chevy and it use a transmission 4L60e, i got it a code p0757, i checked and the plug was disconnected, solenoid B, the rin seal doesn't seal nothing then i bought two new solenoid. The problen with this transmission is it doesn't shift to 3 and 4 would you like give me more advise or i need buy a new one and this is spensive
Hmm, for some reason, I thought the torque converter for a Trailblazer was a different size than one for a full size truck 😕
It is.
It depends on if the trailblazer is a v8
Trailblazer is a source of inexpensive high stall converter
2200 or 2500 stall from the factory
My GMC s15 sonoma has issues with first gear, goes up to about 2k rpm before the truck starts to move
Check power going to the transmission. Pin E. Ignition switch is common issue with the contacts getting fowled on that circuit. If voltage ⚡️ is about 2 volts ⚡️ switch no good.
OK ty
Nice
Since my 98 Chevy is in “limp mode”, and I already tried changing both solenoids, with the same problem still present, do I just need to buy the 3-4 clutch pack that your showing ? Then remove only those old worn out parts from just the top of the assembly ? My truck is a daily driver to work with no heavy hauling or trailer use...
Hope to hear from you soon. Mike in Iowa.
I know it sounds silly but did you check the fuse? Saw the same thing before. Guy tried replacing solenoids and it still acted the same. Turned out to be the fuse
Elfnubbin yes that was the first thing I checked before and after the solenoids were replaced. Fuses and relays all check out.
