I love everything about discbound EXCEPT for one thing - if you punch a piece of lightweight paper, such as standard notebook paper, that page tends to fray and slip out when turning the binder back on itself, or when turning the page. Scotch tape or washi tape along the edge helps it stay in somewhat, but that's an extra step to take when adding a page. I think discbound works pretty well with the thicker, heavier weight pages they tend to come with. I do not overfill or underfill my discs.
I have the arc brand punch also. It is fantastic. I will be using 3 discbound binders as my fountain pen journaling, ink swatching/testing, and one for my ink collection. I purchased a discbound 2021-2022 planner at Michael’s on clearance for 3.50. I removed all of the old planner papers and will be using the cover with my own paper insert creations.
I love this!! I just bought my first Louis Vuitton desk agenda and was thinking about getting a disc bound agenda to go inside it and literally had absolutely no idea what it even was when a friend suggested it. I found your youtube video and couldn't thank you enough for the information!!!! I literally will recommend your video to newcomers looking into the disc system and will forward them this link whenever I meet one! Thank you =)
The disc bound system will never be beat, I found the initial investment to be so worth it. I wish they would make a punch that had a better capacity, but overall it’s so nice how it spans across various brands, I love how open you were about people going whatever route they wished.
this is SO helpful! I am trying to figure out what my idea planner system is and I've been searching around to get answers to my various questions (which requires clicking through a ton of videos). this has the basics and addresses all of my pre-purchase questions in one easy place. thank you so much for making discbound planners user friendly :)
Another important point is that aluminum discs work a lot better than plastic ones. The pages turn a lot more smoothly on them. Also, a high quality company for discbound planners and accessories is Levenger (their disc system is called Circa). The size and shape of their punched holes also enable much smoother page turning. I have an Arc punch but I just bought the Circa Desk Punch to compare. I suspect that one may punch better holes, for purposes of smooth page turning and less paper edge fraying. Another company I just discovered with GORGEOUS disc planner supplies is called The Collected Planner. They have truly elegant stuff. I searched for Blitsy, but they appear to be out of business now.
i have issue with page turning! it seems the page isnt turned as smooth and I have been searching for videos explaining about this but still a No. What's exactly the problem? At first I thought I put too much papers, but when I tried the smallest number of papers, still! I am using plastic ring, and a puncher from We R memory keepers.
I am just getting started with the disc system. I have totally been designing my own perfect planner.... I absolutely love it! Amazing editing by the way!
@@GetOrganizedHQ you know, I was thinking about doing more with it on instagram - I would love to start a youtube channel but I just don't have the equipment necessary at the moment!
I'd seen the discs and supplies in my local craft store, but had no clue how they worked. You video is a very helpful. I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Laura. I appreciate all of the info. I make junk journals and prayer journals and am buying the punch and discs to use with my own piles and piles of paper to create journals with this system.
I love this! Thanks so much for this information. Discbound planners -- I had never heard of this before today, and your video explained it very well. I was looking for an easy, low-cost way to bind wall calendars. Is there any reason why discbinding wouldn't work for that application?
Love your informative videos. I actually was so excited to start a system that I could take pages in and out of. I'm brand new to the discbound world. I purchased what I thought would be great for my planner but unfortunately the discs are not allowing the pages to turn smoothly. I had read that metal ones were smoother and that is what I purchased. If you have any suggestions on this matter I would we greatly appreciate it. I did purchase probably the cheapest 1in. (they do seem the right size for the amount of pages I'm using) metal ones available as I am on a very tight budget. But unless I can get a smoother page turning disc I may not be able to use the system. Thank you so much in advance for your help. Love your videos and think this will be perfect for my ADHD brain. Gail
Excellent Laura! Thank you! Where can you buy those “extras” you displayed for the blank pages, tabbed pages, and bullet dot pages? They seemed to be a nice thickness. Thanks.
New to discbound system. I plan to use it for my kids History notebook because I love the idea that we can add and remove pages. My question is what or how can I use to bind the pages at the end of our school year so we can reuse the disc again? If that's even possible. With Homeschooling 6 kids I'm always on a tight budget. Thank you.
I just learned in the last few hours how they work, having just jumped into the fray with planner terminology (working on implementing a digital planner of my design for iOS) and I’m also someone that 3D prints and I have 3D printers (plural). As shown, the obvious answer is to buy larger discs, as large as you need. How large is that? I don’t know, and you might not until the end of the year. However, even if huge ones are needed and they’re not for sale, with a 3D printer they can’t be too hard to make of an arbitrarily large size (within the limits of the printer, but seriously, you don’t want a book with that many pages anyway) as long as you use the correct profile of the disc. At the same time, if being able to lay it all flat when you look at it isn’t a priority, you can use the profile of a disc on a flat rectangular section as long as the thickness you need, sort of stretching out the disc, and make ends on the non-discs as stoppers. The genius/beauty of the whole system (why did nobody invent this centuries ago???) is the holes punched to where they also go through the edge of the paper, and rely on the nature of paper and other flexible materials to work when forced over the profile of the discs: that the binder discs are discs in shape is only one way of doing it.
Just a heads up and maybe this is their fault but staples has one on their website for 6.56. Apparently its actually 23.99 but they honored the online price. I ended up saving 17.43.
What are these things called? I'm from Australia, and been searching for a couple of days in all the stops in my town, and NO one knows them. Can you note any brands in Aust, please?
I love to customize and make things pretty but practical. This is perfect for what I am wanting to do. What paper do you use? Does it need to be thicker than copier paper?
I like that i can use ANY paper if i make my own. Also that it goes flat when writing. AND that i can add pages anywhere, i could even write on the pages outside of the book all together for the ultimate writing experiance and just add them after i write on them. :) Theres a lot to like lol
This is great, Laura. I've been wanting to try the discbound system. What do you think about TUL? It's the most available here in Hawai'i where, except for Office Depot, we just don't have a lot of stores that carry them (thank goodness for the internet.) The punch is pricey - $48 - but then everything out here pretty much is. Thanks for the great info.
I haven't had a chance to try TUL - but it looks very similar to all the other systems, so I'd definitely try it if that's all I had readily available.
TUL is fantastic. Sturdy construction and great selections. Get TUL punch if you want to make your own pages and such for TUL punch will punch laminate very well. Added thought: Get TUL gel pens too!! Love my TUL pens.
If you already have the discs and the cover, where can you get the inside pages as a yearly calendar and appointment insert? i.e. for 2021, for instance.
We have these pages available in the Sweet Life Society that you can download and print out. sweetlifeplannerclub.com/ Or you can purchase a 2021 Sweet Life Planner here: shopiheartplanners.com/
I love the idea that you can design your own cover and laminate it. Brilliant!!!
This was very thorough and helpful. Thank you for this breakdown of making and using a disc-bound planner, and how you can set it up.
Thanks for this video. I couldn’t find anyone who talked about the basics for beginners.
It’s all being kept secret due to greedy creaters. Shamefully tightly excluind community they share nothing willingly.!

Wow! This is about the most thorough, helpful and informative tutorial I've seen! Thank you for a comprehensive introduction to the planner.

Great video. I love my arc planner.
I drop my planners all the time and it has taken a very full planner falling at a fairly specific angle for stuff to come apart.
Very thorough and helpful! TFS ❤
Laura, How do you measure to get the correct number of discs to page size? Thanks for the great info!
idk if you found your answer, but here is a video showing how to measure for the holes without a punch

What is the size of the ring for the sweet life planner? Cause it seems like it holds a lot of paper.
The current 2020 planner is 1.5 inch rings - it does hold a lot.
What size rings do you have in the Sweet Life planner your showing?
Those are 1.25 inch rings. The 2020 planner comes with 1.5 inch rings.
@@GetOrganizedHQ thank you!
Great video. Just FYI the discbound systems use discs not rings.
OMG WOW Thanks 🤩💞💓📒😍🏆
Hello, I am so confused with the sizes you are using. I dont think they fall into any A or B paper sizes. Does this size have a name?
1/2 letter size is comparable to A5. Letter is comparable to A4
Thank you so much. I am from europe and had no idea that there are differences in paper sizes as well.😀
Do you know of any sites that have printables for 7 disc mini planners? Also, do you have a recommendation for thicker paper?
Our Sweet Life Planner comes with 80# paper. I don't know of any cites for 7 disc planner printables. Sorry!
