Despite never having played a Gran Turismo game, your commentary really got me hooked! Great video!
Having finally beaten this mission in August, after it has taunted me since my childhood, even when knowing what to do, after having grown up, this mission just plays with your mind.
Even with three different guides pulled up, corner cutting, and wall riding, there's 12 different sectors, and between each one you're constantly uncertain of if you took that corner Well Enough. It's the same feeling you get when 15-30 second license tests. "Was that entry good enough? What about my line? My exit??" except the feeling lasts for what feels like forever. Then the cycle repeats over and over.
While you constantly stress out about making errors.
While you constantly stress about about what the SLR is doing, what your tires are doing.
While you realize you're approaching the next opponent and need to not choke this pass.
While you blast down that giant straight and think about that exact moment you need to hit the brakes., and nervously wonder where along the last few corners you'll encounter the 300 SL.
I bet I took a few years out of my shoulder pumping my fist to beating this.
Not quite
The SLR is equipped with Comfort Tires (hard), the worst ones. You can check it on the Replay of a successful Run. You're even taunted in the Mission Description

not quite any order, there's a bug in the US version that means mission 1 doesn't properly mark as finished if its not done first so if you do any mission before mission 1 you can never get the delorean, but as long as you do the first driving mission first you can do the rest in any order you want

when i think of Gran Turismo i think of GT2 Pikes Peak and the infamous escudo
ive only ever tried to beat the escudo with the escudo... Why even bother trying with another car lol.
@@PapamanualFrom my testing, the Cultus is actually quicker than the Escudo off the line and can beat the Escudo up Pikes Peak. While the Escudo may be more legendary and rightly so, the Cultus is seriously underrated and deserves to be in more racing games.
The challenge reminds me of the classic Progect Gotham Racing game people would play on that track:

It is teams of two players each, where one teammate is a Mini Cooper & the other teammate is whatever super care they desire. The Minis start first, while the supercars wait & the goal is for each supercar teammate to help their Mini Cooper beat all the other Minis across the finish line. This can be done by pushing a teammate from behind, so they go faster, crashing into an opponent's Mini at 150MPH after dodging the super car that was defending it.
The PGR developers eventually made it an official game type in later sequels because people were just playing the different game names un-officially.
Still the one of the greatest racing games of all time in my opinion. This video really takes me back to my first playthrough of GT4, where I wasnt good enough to win the harder races, and wasted money on unhelpful upgrades.
Feeling totally stuck, the best way I found to make money at that point was to race on Fuji Speedway 90's and cut the hell out of the chicane at the end while ramming anyone out of the way in the process. Sometimes you gotta do what needs to be done haha.
After years of rubber banding AI in other racing games, I never feel bad about dunking the CPU like this.
let me give you a tip.
get IB license. take your best car and go cittia de aria costa di almafi special condition/rally race.
you win those two races.
Toyota Rally Raid Car will be the prize. It is worth over a million. That means sellback will get you like 200-300k cash in hand. Sell it.
.Redo the races. it will not be super easy. win another Rally Raid Toyota. Sell it.
take the $500,000 and buy a Tommy Kaira ZZ-II and use that for the same races reconverting the winnings to maximum upgrade of the ZZ-II.
mine was I think 934 horsepower plus full weight reduction pack, Nitrous oxide and racing exhaust racing suspension...
add a classy spoiler and adjust front and rear downforce proportional to the HP gain. you can do this by speed testing it on open tracks. The car should have improved handling.
I then used the maximum upgraded ZZ-II to destroy the 4WD cup, every rally race got easier (buy soft super soft tires as well as snow and ice tires and dirt tires). Change tires for the event you enter. some races might benefit from a stage 2 or stage 3 turbo instead of the full level 4.
the ZZ-II will fall short on F1 class championships. I bought a Chaparral 2J and gave it the maximum NA engine improvement pack I think it was level 3 for that vehicle. The Chaparral 2J can be used to gain victory in the classic cup as well as the American Championship.

I fondly remember it going like like 0 to 145MPH in like 5 seconds. So beautiful.
then for European cups I bought a clio and fully loaded it the long and hard way. Also had the UK version of the 427 Cobra if I recall. that is a great car.
XJ220 is not as good in GT4 as it was in GT3 but is is a very strong opponent.
Took years to get to that point. Had over 40% of the game completed. think the garage was over 150 vehicles if I recall.
loved the CarbonR, the Pitwork Z, the Takata DOME NSX the Caddilac CIEN (good for American Championship and FR if I recall) requires full upgrade.
loved the Opel touring cars.
Tommy Kaira ZZ-II is best production car of GT3 and GT4.
Tommy Kaira ZZ-II is the one to use for the ultralight cup or whatever it was. Compact cup or something.
Toyota GT-ONE and Pikes Peak Escudo were my goals but I don't remember if I got them in GT4. Don't think I did.
think I landed it in GT3 though.
be like steven covey. make plans objectives work toward your goals if you play it again. Such a great game but it can be ridicuously challenging too.

God i remember trying these when i spent time at my dads house while growing up. The later missions were so brutally difficult that i learnt what Gamer rage felt like at the age of like 9

If you know your way around the Nordschleife its not that bad, but definitely not easy. Dont get me wrong, I started learning the track back in the day with the Karmann Ghia in arcade mode and it took some years and games to get the hang of it, but it all started in this game!
BTW there's nothing better than doing a lap on the real track, after all these year's of training ;)

6:00 the racing line you used is different: in the left you are close to the middle, and pull towards the right because of small corrections i assume, on the right you stay on the left side and are in the ideal position to take the corner, wich is specially important on narrow sections like this one.

If mission 34 is too easy for someone, I recommend playing the NTSC version of GT4.
isn't the NTSC version our standard one here in the US? I don't think any of my stuff back then or since is PAL
@@7th_Heaven The NTSC version is standard in the United States, and in your region Mission 34 is definitely more difficult than it is here in Europe.

Pretty sure this mission was the reason I got a racing wheel. Still was super difficult but man I’ve been sim racing since, it’s been a blast. I’m thankful for GT4 and for it for getting me hooked on this fun pastime of Sim Racing.

August 2018, I completed this challenge. I screamed so loud but no one could hear me because they went to get Chinese. Best one I've ever had though

The final mission in GT4 Driving Mission needed 4 retries and each one is 123 seconds long! Setsuna Yuki somehow completed it in the 1st try though.

I played again with "online resources" and my PC and I wasn't able to beat it 100% legit, I had to corner cut the 90 degree turn. I'll do it legit one day...
Also, you can also fix the splits not showing up as well as the penalty timer not going away by setting the EE/IOP clamping to 'Full' and VU clamping to 'Extra'.

Great video, it's a nice retrospective of this horrible mission and you did a great job beating it. Oddly, I didn't find it too bad compared to some of the golds, the thing is that you have to really know the track, there's so many turns as you said and you have to optimize everything. If you're really good at controlling that monster of a car, you can overtake the 1st place car in that long straight. Waiting to start the missions definitely is horrible though, I think it's because they jerry rigged the game, like the way it's programmed cannot support having the opponents be in the middle of the race, they have to get to the point naturally. I wonder too if the AI is slightly chaotic, what I mean by chaos is that the AI might make slightly different moves each race and is never 100% identical on different runs. I swear in some of the races, not mission 34 but another one of the one lap magic races the first place car crashed and couldn't race because of how bad it was, I think it was one of the tight turns with that Plymouth you mentioned. It's so strange, I always find myself drawn to watching people do mission 34. I dunno, I found it fun, but in 2004 and those years there was not much else to do, so I'd always have another TV and a show running while I waited to start. Interestingly I remember trying to re-create the same car in career mode so that I could practice freely without having to wait on a timer, but the car cannot be re-created, I tried it with friends and it was impossible. I can't explain it well, but that car in the mission is poorly tuned on purpose and you actually can't replicate it normally, the developers clearly knew what they were doing and were trolling the players, but at the same time it teaches you to keep practicing to overcome unfair challenges.
Challenge is hard but not impossible. You need to learn how to drive the SLR first on multiple tracks and races. Then try to come back to this challenge and see how much better you are able to manipulate the car and do it without cheating.
I busted out my PS2 to play some GT4, but I’m still not able to beat Mission 34. I’m going to stick at 98.1% completion.

There is at least one video I found of someone beating it clean, but I am simply unwilling to put in the time to get that good. Even with my cheesing, Im still barely able to win in the end.

This mission was not that hard.
As a veteran of first four Gran Turismo parts (i beat them all), i could say there was one, even more difficult.

I remember i've spent days on SLR and Nurburgring, but i remember spent weeks on Toyota licence that i mentioned.
Agree, getting gold on many of the license tests were actually more difficult that this.

Do you have a PAL or NTSC version of the game? In the NTSC version, the wait before the start of the race is 8 seconds longer than in the PAL version, not only that, the NTSC 300 SL is 4 seconds faster for some reason. NTSC does around 9:12 (sometimes 9:13), while PAL 300 SL does around 9:16. Which makes it easier to gold mission 34 on PAL version.

@@gustavson1985 The differences in the time required to complete the bronze, silver and gold licenses between the PAL and NTSC versions of all Gran Turismo games is a deep rabbit hole to go down. I recently tried to complete mission 34 in NTSC version and I find it much harder to pass.

I remember doing the 34 mission when I was 9 or 10. I did it in 3 rounds? Something like that. I was stuck on different place in gt2. Viper on Laguna Seca test during s licence. I was 5 back then and I was stuck on it for MONTHS.
