Seems like one of the best ways to get the fish to bite is to not go fishing. Every time I decide not to go or can't go, my buddies tell me about how great the fishing was and how massive the hatch was.

"Pee with your rod in your hand" is the waterfowl hunting version of "Duck Whistle." If you drop your waders to take a leak, guaranteed duck infestation. But only for the couple of seconds it takes you to tuck things away, then they gone.
Something I’ve found to work is to put on a Willie Nelson mask on. It tricks the fish into thinking you’re Willie Nelson and gee who doesn’t want to meet Willie Nelson.

Worst time the broke hook happened to me was actually a bent hook. I was around 12yo fishing for bass, bluegill, etc with a smallish popper. I caught several fish but then proceeded to not boat another fish for the next hour until dark. I was getting blow up after blow up. I was so frustrated. Got back to the dock, very dark at this point. Found my hook had hit the boat at some point and pressed into the popper body when I got to a light. And yes, I was 12 fishing by myself on a dammed river with no adult supervision in an old rickety paddle boat. Always had fun fishing that section of river growing up.
Those are the lessons that stick with you. That was well over a decade ago and I can remember it like yesterday. If I get a bite without a hook up, fly fishing or not, I usually feel my hook point when I bring it back.
Throw something the fish can see. We strongly felt they wanted worms. We threw red and tan San Juan Worms. No luck. Then, out came the hot pink, and BOOM! FISH ON!

Danish local TV does an ok/crappy fishing series with two "pros" (very bad teachers - very) one reporter and a non fishing in private camera man. They fish for big pike, and get a lot of 10 - 20 pd fish. Then they "force" the camera man to fish a bit, and he gets a 22-26(forgot the number) pd one..

Took a short hike the other to a small lake in the mountains near here, and on my very first cast (a poor one at that)...blammo...hooked a 10" or so brookie. Thought I was set for a very good day catching fish, but that turned out to be the only one. It was still a very good day though...saw a moose too.
Oh I caught white bass with this technique Saturday night... walk up stream with a streamer dangling in the water and don't really pay attention to it.

You forgot how important it is to hold your mouth right. This is a big deal lol. You need at least half a hand of ranch sunflower seeds in your mouth at all times or salt and pepper pistachios. This insure your holding your mouth right and you will be ripping lips in no time.
If you can see the fish, and ID what they are doing and presenting the right fly, the right way, chances are they just see you and know what they are doing.
