Our honeymoon was a fishing trip to a river in northern Idaho. Stayed in a 5 star hotel for a while, but too far from the river, so we rented a logger's cabin for a couple nights with curled up linoleum, shower curtain in front of toilet and a thin mattress over wire for a bed. She's a keeper.
Ya for Ben! Ben makes light of it all because being snobby and uptight isn't for fly fishing! Yes. Double Surgeons is plenty. Triple leaves also a big ball to look at and snag on a not-so-good cast. I do how ever prefer the Figure of Eight knot. I've have had Surgeons break on me, but not the FO8. Yes. Blood Knot on bigger. If you build your own leaders, you'll notice that the directions in doing so requires a Blood Knot. I thought the same with Echo. But I already owned Redington's Butter Stick in 5wt S-Glass rod and really enjoyed 100% the all around feel of a glass rod. So, I bought the Echo Bad Ass Glass in 7wt. YUP! I most surly wasn't disappointed! Trust Your Gut? This took me awhile as I'm 67 now and know I could have made better first thought discitions rather that ignoring the gut Thought
Took years of trying for the grass carp. I would devote an hour or so when I had the time. Usually would hit a nearby pond before dinner. The thrill of it all was the pursuit. Initial couple of runs were exciting but they had out quickly. All in all fun times. Went to Virginia for New Years, my birthday! Been fishing in that day since I was 14. 58 now and haven’t missed one since. I have fishing buddies that look forward to it. One friend has gone with me the last 13 years. Hope for many more.
Ben, I wanted to thank you for your attitude and willingness to share your knowledge. I agree the best and worst of flyfishing is the people. I hope someday to high hole you so you can watch my "perfect" technique as I attempt whipping the river into submission. May you see rising fish and always have a tight line.
I like tying 3x to 4x with a blood knot and then a piece of 5x with a perfection loop above the blood knot for my dropper. But I’m a euro dork. Works well for indicator rigs too. The key for me is keeping the dropper fly unweighted to avoid tangles.
Yes. Wrong move, St Croix. The St Croix Ledgend rods and blanks were incredible. I built a lot of them in the early 2000s. Unsung heros, maybe because they didn't hold the snob recognition of being a Sage, Winston or Orvis. Recently repaired my trusty 8' 4wt that broke at the ferrule. I trimmed it down, epoxied spigots and made it into a 4 pc that now throws a 5 wt and fits into a 21" tube
You haven’t been fishing in 3 weeks! 😳🙁 Well it was a good video..I like the Q&A! The advice on reheating chicken was a Huge help..I’ll definitely try it! 👍👍 Thanks as always Huge one..Have a Huge New Year! 🎣
What is your opinion on the stocking of the Great Lakes with Steelhead and Salmon? Thanks for the videos man. I’ve learned a lot over the past year or so of watching these. One of my favorite content creators out there.
Ben, sounds like you need to book a trip to Kiribati (x-mas island), bonefish, GT's, and milkfish, cheaper than Bahamas and easier travel for west coast guys.
Rio lines don’t last? I’m still fishing 1 that came with my crosswater combo that i got 15 years ago. No steelhead yet? Jeepers. Have you ever caught an Atlantic salmon or landlocked? Life is short, put the beer down and get after it!
I went fishing on my honeymoon. Wife and I had our first double up as married couple it awesome time. But our focus was enjoying our time with each other!
Dood! You gotta come fish central Wisconsin… musky, bass, carp, walleye and trout! I hear ya about the legend ultra rods…. I haven’t had another st croix since that was worth a crap
Ben Just be sure to fish midweek during steelhead runs up here in N.Calif. Weekends it’s assholes to elbows on any given river. We have so many bridges going over rivers on the coast on highway 1. Sometimes if it’s too crowded to fish it’s fun just to spot and watch Fish running upstream from the bridges. Stay huge
More great advice and wisdom - many thanks. You know, fried chicken is great, but I wish I could find those whole barbecue chickens that used to come hot in the aluminum lined paper bag. The grocery store rotisserie chickens are okay, but no where like those barbecued ones in the bags when I was a kid growing up in the south. Nobody has the same seasoning those had, and I can't find them anywhere, not in any state I've ever been to. Imagine, hot juicy barbequed whole chicken on a fly fishing trip...
Echo rods are very good rods at a great price. Tim Rajeff is a world class caster who knows how to get the most out of a rod. The vast majority of the fly shops in the northwest carry Echo rods for a reason and they shouldn't be compared to hyped up moonshine rods. They are better compared to Redington, particularly when it comes to two handers. They also have some great glass rods if you're into that.
The St. Croix Imperial fly rods are American made. I picked up an Imperial Salt a couple years ago and like it a lot. My 7wt Legend is my favorite bass rod though.
I love my Echo rods. It's best that everyone leave that brand alone...no demand in the marketplace means low price for me. Granted, I do have higher end Echo models, so that has to be mentioned. Use them for salt and freshwater.
The only thing I know about my parent's honeymoon is that they went fishing. My dad bought my mom a Sage rod for a wedding present too. Still together after more than 25 years.
Would a 4 wheel drive Hearse be the ideal fishing vehicle. Wouldn't have to break down those 12 foot Euro rod while relocating. And yes, they do come in 4x4 . I have caught a Milk Fish. Beautiful but have a unique odor. Maybe mine was spoiled.
Since you said you are not a power caster, how about a video the just shows your casts. I’m a visual, eye hand coordination learner and watching different people cast different ways is helpful. Many don’t cast how they say to cast, which is interesting, and the trajectory of the fly and line varies greatly among even the “best” casters. Unfortunately, most fly fishing videos show just half a back cast through the forward cast onto the water and 1,2,3 there’s a fish, followed by a long segment of fish in the air or sometimes in the water. Or, all the video is from the chest camera. This is understandable for a single fisherman and one of the views for comparing my cast to theirs, not quite as useful when trying to continue to discover the range of array of casts. Thanks
Year late here, but I need some clarity on the best type of fried chicken to catch fish.....we have standard American style fired chicken, boneless chicken, chicken sandwiches, Korean fried chicken, chicken nuggets, and like four types I don't even know about yet. Thank you for speaking the truth about being a decent person while fishing!
That’s a whole video right there. Too much to tackle here. I will say that tendies are sometimes the right call and any chicken is better than no chicken.
Not honeymoon, but anniversary. For 30th anniversary, my wife put us up in a swank hotel and hooked me up with an all day fly fishing trip in Colorado. I knew that she was a keeper. ;-)
Hold the front door! Why for the hate on Moonshine rods? I have St Croix fly rods, Orvis fly rods and Moonshine fly rods. I'm really liking the Moonshine rods. I actually have 5 of them, that's how much I like them. Thoughts?
I think I have learned more about fly fishing while being entertained mightily on this channel than any other. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge, love of chicken, and beer. If I ever had the chance to buy you a beer, I would. But not a chicken. Love this channel.
What... No debate on fluro or biodegradable strike indicators? Hahaha - Great video Ben. My question would be... how to quickly unravel a 75 turn wind knot rats nest without offending everyone within an ear shot of you?
It's definitely not the same as it used to be Ben. I know exactly where you're talking about. Of all the times i fished it, only once was no one else there, I've caught some very memorable trout there. But I'm sure it's tainted from being well known. Same can be said for many other outdoor attractions well known in the area.
On the spot burning topic…. So I think that spot video are a necessary evil… I don’t think that you should post clean, private or unknown hard to get to location but I will post overfished locations that I know get a lot of searches… I think that those video actually help a lot of new fisherman… and keeps them out of the places I want to fish…
You rightfully rag on people to spell flies correctly….it’s not flys. My turn. At 7:28 it should read, ‘I know better now’. … Not I know better know. 😉
‘Ayyyyyy thanks for taking my question! 🕺🏼
Huge agreement with the St. Croix Legend Ultra 4 wt. it’s my favorite rod too.

Future question: white meat vs dark meat? Does this change if it’s sunny vs cloudy? I’ve heard that you need to stay lighter if it’s a bright day.

Yes. Wrong move, St Croix.

10:28 the subtlety of that joke was very underrated
Thank you for doing your videos. Very entertaining.
I would love to see more videos about fishing solo in a boat. How you do it?
fiberglass rules for sinking lines and fish that jump a lot, keeps 'em pinned better'n a fast rod
More of these!
I love St. Croix fly rods. Underrated American made rods.
Rio lines don’t last? I’m still fishing 1 that came with my crosswater combo that i got 15 years ago. No steelhead yet? Jeepers.
Have you ever caught an Atlantic salmon or landlocked?
Life is short, put the beer down and get after it!
I have a 30 foot sink tip scientific-anglers sink tip, but I also fish on the bow river, and in lakes in BC.
Hey Ben! During the intro when you're walking down the tracks.. Is that the feather river canyon?! Looks like my backyard haha
I have a Legend Ultra 9’ 8wt and it’s a fantastic rod. Best I’ve ever thrown..
I liked this video a lot. A question for the future maybe is do you not like small flies in general or is it just midges.
I went fishing on my honeymoon. Wife and I had our first double up as married couple it awesome time. But our focus was enjoying our time with each other!
Love.
Dood! You gotta come fish central Wisconsin… musky, bass, carp, walleye and trout! I hear ya about the legend ultra rods…. I haven’t had another st croix since that was worth a crap
Can't wait for the steelhead video, I'd prefer to see you do it on the Great Lakes then go West Coast.
Those aren’t real steelhead though lol
i put a slmon egg on my line with an elk hair caddis it was the only way i could get one is it still fly fishing>
Ben

St Croix Legends are awesome... but I think the newer models don't have the quality, warranty, and aren't made in US any more.
The St. Croix Imperial fly rods are American made. I picked up an Imperial Salt a couple years ago and like it a lot. My 7wt Legend is my favorite bass rod though.
Happy new year,
Man your channel is great. Keep the content mix as is imo.
I totally know where you are taking about, about the fishery, my dad talks about it.
What fly could i use to catch perch/pan fish? Thanks
Copper john is my go to in the non summer times. In the summer, a tiny white popper.
@@Hrogthar yeah and sometimes I use a topwater cricket or ant
Good change of pace
When are you fishing with Blane Chocklett for muskie?
Steelhead fishing in Erie, PA rules!!!

My wife suggested going on a river fishing and camping trip for our honeymoon. It was great

I have caught a Milk Fish. Beautiful but have a unique odor.

I've never had a double surgeons knot fail and they sit fine. I've never seen or had any advantage from a triple surgeons
Excellent chicken management advice
Blood knot vs. surgeon's knot; interesting. Am I the only trout guy that uses back to back uni knots to add tippet, then?!

Question: do instagram spey fishers catch fish, or just do slow-mo casting? Is euro nymphing the cross fit of fly fishing? Maybe two questions.
Original recipe or extra crispy ?
I have two echo rods, 9wt and 6wt, like them both, broke a tip once and I had a new tip section with in 4 days
For the price that you pay for those rods, if they are your taste, fast action, there good rods, not everyone likes them
Tip section was $20

Flip flop time= shad fishing in central fl
Good Q&A , echo rods 👍RIO line 👎🏻using your gut 👍
I've never heard of a milk fish, but now I'm going to look them up.
Blood knot vs surgeons - that is exactly what I've always done. Glad to know I'm so huge.
Good Video, great info
Not honeymoon, but anniversary. For 30th anniversary, my wife put us up in a swank hotel and hooked me up with an all day fly fishing trip in Colorado. I knew that she was a keeper. ;-)

Why for the hate on Moonshine rods? I have St Croix fly rods, Orvis fly rods and Moonshine fly rods. I'm really liking the Moonshine rods. I actually have 5 of them, that's how much I like them. Thoughts?
I know it wasn't your question but is there a consensus that Moonshine rods are not quality?
ruclips.net/video/yEKzJWVJ5tw/видео.html
I have a 10 foot euro. It’s a great rod for the price. I like it. He has something personal.
It’s -11° before the wind chill here today. Oh, did I mention the wind has been blowing for 75+ mph for 3 days now? Yeah. No fly fishing here either.
Test your knots, with the line - some behave bad with some knots, and well with others.
I think I have learned more about fly fishing while being entertained mightily on this channel than any other. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge, love of chicken, and beer. If I ever had the chance to buy you a beer, I would. But not a chicken. Love this channel.
@ huge fly fisherman why do you not put a polorized cover your camera lense so we can see what you see and are talking about
Because it’s a GoPro and you can’t see anything more than 10 ft away anyway.
What... No debate on fluro or biodegradable strike indicators? Hahaha - Great video Ben. My question would be... how to quickly unravel a 75 turn wind knot rats nest without offending everyone within an ear shot of you?
i love how it goes from fly fishing to how long you should heat up your fried chicken😂
so you will fish Tricos but not midges? hmmm
Omg. Was that Colin from Hawaii??? Because I think I have totally fished with him.
Grass carp don't fight hard? You're hanging with the wrong grass carp.
Ben Ben Ben with Q&A
The people dead on!
The fried chicken advice is life changing.....
Love the fried chicken advice.
Learned that from my mom. Makes a big difference in my chicken experience. 🍗
Steelhead are Rainbow trout. You've caught rainbows before.
This is like saying pygmy sharks are the same as great whites because they're both sharks
It's definitely not the same as it used to be Ben. I know exactly where you're talking about. Of all the times i fished it, only once was no one else there, I've caught some very memorable trout there. But I'm sure it's tainted from being well known. You have a echo gecko and did a review on it😂😂.
Yes I am not smart sometimes
I was really waiting for the attainable fish to be a Lahontan Cutthroat.
Tom Rosnebauer is a fly fsihing action hero
Catfish should be obtainable its exotic to a lot of fly fisherman 😆
You cannot tell me that milk fish aren’t just salty carp

You should hit up Addicted Fishing to get that steelhead. Would make for an epic collab.
The clowns that posted a video of illegally fishing a closed section of river? Thanks, but I’ll pass.
Hmm good to know that’s too bad always wanted to see you guys in the same video.
wait Ben, don't you fish wish an echo gecko?
🤦♂️ wow I’m an idiot. The Gecko is kind of an anomaly though. There isn’t really anything like it.
milk fish: the grass carp of the ocean
🤯
Happy Huge Year Ben and fellow fly fishers.
I love my St. Croix 5 wt and Bloody Mary's man we got stuff in common 😋But I'm in WNC and you hate us here oh well
Wild fly guy with the big beard is ripped, I’d go for him first...
Chesters Fried chicken is horrible compared to Safeway Deli chicken. It's true
Thanks Ben! Love your videos and your sense of humor. I want to fish with you and about.trout someday!!!
...and then there is me fishin 3+ lb trout on 5x 😅
Is it bad that I didn't think about it and just asked if I could go on our honeymoon? She said of course, so i got lucky.
I am huge down there
Calling out Fly All Szn on RUclips as the worst spot burner I've come across.
I can’t watch that douche bag anymore. Glad he is impressed with himself.
@@tomjackson3988 haha! Agree!
Do you need a beard for fly fishing?
Yes, you do.
Why do I suck at fly fishing?
The answer to the first question is use a wooly bugger. You are welcome
Lmao u never caught a steelhead and u smack talking the Great Lakes steelhead?! Man you really ARE a yuuuge fly fishermen lololll
The Ian Higgins wildfly question, lol!!!
