i love when a character’s design changes to reflect a new arc
for instance, in the earlier arcs of the Game Shelf baby luis wears to a t shirt to represent his comfort-now that we’re in the Canada saga, he needs to wear puffy coats to adapt to the bitter climate, also signified by his evolution into a chad

Happy birthday! What a nice collection of games, I love how video games can tie so many people and childhoods together. Mine is a plethora of Tecmo games (Monster Rancher 1 & 2, Tecmo's Deception 1 - 3), Resident Evil 1 & 2, Suikoden 1 & 2, and Silent Hill 1. I didn't get into Nintendo heavily until later in life outside of handhelds, but I see some good choices on this list from their selection!

This video I adored. Mainly because I love listening to people discussing what they love! Seriously it's so much fun what people like about these games that, some I may not have even heard of.
But for me my childhood defining games were Dark Cloud 2, Okami, Ocarina of Time, Yoshi's Story and a lot of other N64 games. Mainly because mom didn't have the money to buy me new video games, so I ended up being able to play a lot of older games that I might not have even been exposed to just because of how rare they are nowadays.
But still, I hope you have a Happy Birthday and I'll see you later in whatever you make next, either way goodbye for now!

Happy birthday, Luis! Interesting to see, how different the outlook on childhood games is, when I grew up playing PC games. Nintendo has almost always had zero reach in Eastern Europe, so the only characters people ever know of were Mario and Pokemon (thanks to the anime). I never knew a person with a Gameboy in elementary, middle, or high school. I never knew what Legend of Zelda really was until I played Ocarina of Time on the 3DS in 2015, and holy crap, I hated it, lol. I'm still not a fan, and I will sing my praises to Majora's Mask instead.
As for me, I grew up on so many great PC games, but the ones I remember most fondly is - Zoo Tycoon, because the management aspect of it was so enticing. Need for Speed Underground 2 has always been the millenial neighborhood classic, which came out at the perfect time with the first Fast & Furious movies. Spent countless time using cheats and building stuff in The Sims 2, and then finding the most bizarre ways to kill my Sims, because I always found the simulation aspect the most boring (unlike the older Animal Crossing games later on).
But the absolute classic, that way too many people in my age group remember, many of which spent hundreds, if not thousands (like me) hours on it, is without a doubt, World of Warcraft. Obviously, being the Eastern European, I didn't have money for the monthly subscription fees, so I was constantly migrating from one private server to another, all of which had very broken functionality, but it was my introduction to the MMO genre, as well as the insane open world structure to it all. The game in its original 2004 form will always be more impressive to me, than even FFXIV today, even on the technological standpoint with the 20 year gap. Later in middle school, I had my allowance raised, and could finally afford to play on the official servers, which dramatically forced me to improve my english, as I no longer had the benefit of speaking with only people in, or close to my country. I will always fondly remember the game, before leaving it in the dust behind in early 2011, because the Cataclysm expansion no longer went the way I wanted it to go in terms of game design. I made countless friends there that I still talk to, to this day.

OH MY GOD I ALSO PLAYED SOME PC GAMES BACK IN THE DAY
The Zoo/Roller Coaster Tycoon ones were incredible, I never tried to "win" at them it was simply a lot of fun to just try to do fun stuff in them

for me I think it the main one was fking kingdom hearts of all games. It introduced me to amazing music , cool ass art and character design , world building, story, fun gameplay, etc. Seeing Disney mix with a franchise I knew nothing about and become something so compelling just blew my mind. really made my imagination run wild about other things in life

Happy Birthday! Nice list, and we even have some similarities despite the age gap. NES Megaman games, Pokemon Red/Silver and Link's Awakening were my favorites as a babby for sure. But if we creep into adolescence, FF7, Mario/Zelda 64 and Diablo all left a huge impact. Wind Waker and Crono Trigger too of course, pointing to my name and profile picture...But by the time I got to those I was in high school. Does that still count as a child? Now I feel old. Back in my day we had tiger handhelds not these fancy smartphones...

Super heartwarming video, Luis!! I love hearing about people's childhood games and their experiences with games as a whole because of how deeply invested people are as kids. Not only do you feel immersed in these worlds, but you actually controlled aspects of it through your characters
i grew up with the gamecube, so i played party games like Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Party 4, but i'd say the games that absolutely defined my childhood are Fire Emblem 7, which i played when i was like 5 years old, and Pokemon FireRed, both of which I borrowed from my older brother. People dislike Lyn Mode for pretty understandable reasons, but I'll always be grateful that there was a guided, low-stakes mode that even I could play and have fun with at my age. I could barely even read at the time, but the character designs and vibrant graphics made me fall in love with Fire Emblem forever. Characters like Wil, Rath, and Rebecca got me hooked on green archers at a young age and completely rewired my brain LOL
My brother had a save file in Pokemon FireRed and one of the first things he taught me was to NOT save when I played, which i occasionally forgot to do (i would replace his pokemon's DUMB STATUS MOVES with COOL DAMAGING MOVES like CUT). Mostly though, I would start a new game and quit without saving, picking different starters every time and enjoying it every time. The beginning half of Pokemon FireRed is SO nostalgic to me, and it was my defining experience with Gen 3 of Pokemon. I actually didn't beat the game until I replayed it last year, and even though my perspective on the game as a whole is more mixed, I could never dislike a game that meant so much to me.
just like you, i could go on and on, but i think these were the Big Two that really made my childhood
Happy early birthday, and congrats on 6 years of The Game Shelf!!

My first ever game was Smash 64, I was 2 years old. I can't remember it, but thankfully my mom still has the home video of me sitting with my older brother playing Smash. She likes to poke fun of me by saying "Mario! Pikachu!" as I ran around the house. Strangely enough, I don't remember if I ever played any other N64 games since I don't feel any nostalgia for any of them except Smash. I remember certain Gameboy games like Pokemon, but I have the most nostalgia for GBA, GameCube, Wii and DS games. For GBA, playing Pokemon Sapphire at the mall with my red Gameboy Advance SP with my brother playing Ruby. Gamecube, everything Mario on that console, Smash Melee, Godzilla, Bloody Roar: Primal Fury, Kirby: Air Ride, Billy Hatcher, Sonic Adventure 1 DX and 2, Sonic Riders just to name some. Wii, I still remember getting Twilight Princess on Christmas of 2006 and playing the shit out of it. Wii Sports, everything Mario, Brawl as well.

Happy Birthday, man! You're genuinely one of the best actually underrated RUclipsrs that I've seen. Every piece of content you make feels so genuine, and it's always so fun to watch, especially since there's very few RUclipsrs like you, in my opinion. Not even mentioning the fact that you're a Mexican RUclipsr who embraces that fact and shows it off constantly (meaning you're just like me FR), you're just funny to watch. You're awesome, keep that shit up.

    My childhood defining games:
Ratchet and Clank - learning to dodge all the things in that game felt like a big achievement and loved the arena modes in 3 and gladiator. The guns were very cool and really enjoyed the characters
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn - something about the thrill of levelling all the units and babying the weaker ones to become strong I loved. Also the art style and quirky personalities of characters
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - My introduction to fantasy RPGs and a very good hack and slash for its time. I loved the choices of gear without understanding them, so just picked the cool gear
Mortal Kombat Deception + Armageddon - All the characters you could choose, making your own custom move list, chess kombat+racing, the unique conquest mode and the challenge of learning long combos

    • @TheGameShelf
      @TheGameShelf  4 месяца назад +2

I'm gonna be honest, in Mexico, at least for me, there were barely any games in Spanish, most of the time they were in English only, that's basically what forced me to learn the language at a young age, I even have a video about it if you're interested.
If I could make a suggestion though, I'll say you should check out Zelda Breath of The Wild or Tears of The Kingdom, they have a Latin American dub and translation that I think is more enjoyable than the English version
