One example I always think of is how Bravely Seconds Localization changed some outfits and people had meltdowns over it and it basically tanked the games reputation and made people not want to get it here. The game also had alot of improvements over the original BD, and even QoL changes made from the japanese version based off player feedback. but nah they changed some outfits so we gotta avoid one of the best games on the 3ds and result in a mid BD2.
It will never not be funny to me that the director apologized for Bravely Second which a lot of people loved and went up to made BD2 which a lot of people were mixed on

In fairness, the only reason the Anna controversy is the most well known is because people drew attention to that specific controversy, not just that the anti-localizers got angry about it. That in review I realised I never cared about any of the controversies mentioned in the video I guess is a good thing, as I didn't put much energy into them. Well, the only time any of my energy went into it was if someone I know was backing those absurd viewpoints and pushing them on to others (like gaming is sexist, males having fantasies is bad, sexualisation is bad, cultural appropriation in games and media, that sort of thing)

I still think the Bridget thing is weird. Seems very confusing and antithetical to the storyline that character had going. Something something about not giving in to societal pressures and staying true to yourself. Bridget becoming a girl is basically giving in to the societal pressures they were put under by their family and clan, so the message is like "Let others dictate who you should be" I don't really care that much, but whenever people bring that up as some example of people being transphobic for not liking it, I think that's pretty unfair. There's legitimate reasons to have issues with that story

While the controversy with Unicorn Overlord is questionable at best, complaining over making the game have a dialect more fitting for the time period, the problems with the translation of other games like Eiyuden Chronicles (have been really enjoying it so far) where they have optional and momentary dialogue of someone getting called a chud (this is also a medieval era fantasy game) I can see is more justified in their criticism
Even though I was a 27-year old fully cognizant adult ten years ago, I'm still not entirely aware of Gamergate's full picture. At the time, all I knew was the feminist game journalists were being harassed for their dumb hot takes. I think that, as an adult, I had stopped caring what game journalists were talking about a long time before that point...otherwise I may have been dragged into the quagmire with them. In hindsight, the biggest implication was the genesis of the current strain of uncompromising cultural reactionaries that have come to dominate the conservative political parties of nearly every western democracy today.
I swear, any bad movie book show or game would be considered woke by many people without seeing what’s actually wrong with the story, writing, characters, and even concept/continuity in all the media I mentioned.
As someone who's 'lucky' enough to play Japanese games in their original languages, I'd say my main issue when it comes to localisation is how it can change the way a character is presented, leading to a disconnect between the localised version and the original version. That said, translating from Japanese to English is far from easy and you can't expect the localised version to be 100% faithful. Unless you want the text to be stilted and unnatural, which... why would you? So yeah... I haven't played Unicorn Overlord yet, but seeing the screenshots, I agree that this controversy is beyond daft.

I completely disagree on your opinions on Stellar Blade. Any developer has the right to make the game (character design, revealing outfits, etc.) the way that they want. So, if a character is meant to wear revealing outfits, so be it. Also, the hard graffiti next to the letter R is not an issue whatsoever. People were reading too much into that.

Pairing the Mario and unicorn overlord Controversies with the others delegitimizes and causes a disconnect with the issues at hand making people already think the next ones you cover aren't actual problems. the unicorn overload thing is the only real issue that I simi-agree with you with, but I would say that if it wasn't for other localization companies wiping their butt with the source material to insert their own egos into the project that might have not happened. the Stellarblade one I've seen people make this argument when they don't really even want to pretend to know what the outrage was about. Sony said that they weren't gonna censor the game and people bought the game based on the faith that they were going to keep that promise. When Sony eventually did censor the game the people got mad that they were lied to. Side note interesting how you left out the part where there were people on the internet saying that the game itself was sexist, how the person that designed the main character has never met a women before (even though the designer was a woman and the lead developers wife), how the dev team are just pathetic virgins that only made the character off of their desires of what the female body should be (even though the body is a scan of an actual models), and when the game came out there was article after article demanding the game to be censored. Interesting how that was left out of your segment. To just boil it down to it's just a bunch of gooners getting mad that they can't get off to the design anymore is just poisoning the well and preventing proper resolutions to issues. 15:40 the trap and trans thing is two different things entirely and more often than not the trans-change is never really genuine it's almost always for a political motives. Traps are not trans it's the male dressing up as a female for the fun of fooling people. Trans is someone going through gender dysphoria and uses several different methods to alter their body for them to better deal with that Dysphoria. One is for fun the other is a medical condition and to equate one as the other is disrespectful for both parties. People get mad at it because they not only realize the disrespect but the change completely messes up and ruins the core appeal of that character. Lastly doesn't the twitter crowed your appealing to hate it when trans people get sexualized? Why try and put them in the same camp. lastly if you don't know what gamergate was why didn't you go search for what it was, Gamergate was at the start about journalistic integrity due to people finding out that there were gaming journalist giving glowing review scores / giving awards to games and companies that they had personal gain from it's success. When finding out about it people went to the platforms and websites telling their bosses about that and lead to some changes in the platforms and punishing the people involved. After that said journalist angry that their scheme was discovered came out with serval articles calling gamers sexist and bigots and racist. Leading to public outcry resulting in the gamergate movement to be born. After that it was constant backs and forwards in arguments that devolved into tribalism, grifting and gaslighting. Making fun of people that use the word Woke towards superfluous things you can do that but if you don't look past those people and listen to the people that have legitimate complaints, your no better than those people you are laughing at and in some cases worse.
So I'm not going to address the entirety of your comment here because it's long and covers multiple topics, but here are a few things I wanted to say quick: 1.) The trap/femboy/trans thing in Japan is a really complicated situation that basically nobody in the discussion genuinely comprehends. The reality of the situation is that Bridget and Vivian being considered Otokonoko is not proof of them not being trans. _Not saying you are making this claim here, just using these two to illustrate an example here._ You need to keep in mind that entertainment media is dictated from a top-down position. If you try to create something and the editors or the head of the company is against it then they can replace you, and you also need to keep in mind that Japan is both a very socially conservative country and also that socially they tend not to make a fuss about things to maintain social harmony. With all of that in mind, Otokonoko has long been considered a _safe umbrella term_ for sexual minorities and gender nonconforming characters in Japan. Until very recently if you planned to have a character like this they generally either needed to be comedic or have plausible deniability by not being fully explicit about what the character in question represents. The same has actually been true here in the US, with a lot of this sort of representation being limited to things like the villain role in a Disney film. For example, Ursula the Sea Witch from _The Little Mermaid_ is based off of the famous drag queen Divine that performed from the 60's almost to the 90's. Ratigan from _The Great Mouse Detective,_ Scar from _The Lion King,_ among others, are extremely heavily queer coded in speech and mannerism. None of this is accidental, and it's not to say that any of these creatives hated people like this. Ironically, a lot of the time characters like these were included because it was the only sort of socially acceptable context that they could be used. This can actually tie into the Stellar Blade comment a bit too, but when it comes to sexualization _it's fine._ Trans characters and people *can* be sexualized, so long as that is not the primary way in which they exist in popular culture. _That_ is the crux of the argument, and it ties into why so many people have an inherently negative on sight reaction to characters like 2B, Bayonetta, and Eve. You need to understand that _sooooo_ many female characters _(and even living people)_ have long been used for sexually charged marketing. Go look up just how many female characters and actresses have been used for this even since early film. Heck, look into Hedy Lamarr. Absolutely gorgeous woman, prominent actress in her time. She was typecast as a bimbo in her acting roles, with her being a pioneer in frequency hopping _(a method of communication used in military radio and satellite communication and is heavily tied to message encryption)_ almost entirely ignored until the last 10 years or so. Also she *literally* escaped Benito Mussolini in a spy movie-esque manner, her life is extremely interesting. As for trans people, their only real representation in popular culture for decades was as a naughty website search category. Being exasperated by the commonality of these sorts of things and pushing for representation beyond this is not meant to be seen as saying they can't _also_ happen, but it's basically like if damn near every single depiction of a man in television and games was a short balding fat guy for whatever reason. It would be super annoying if that was the singular depiction of masculinity in media 90% of the time, yes you can find somebody that happens to look like this and use them as a model but it's not representative of the wider world and ito cynical people it can come off as an excuse to continue spreading a media-enforced stereotype that has negative effects in the real world. Like, wouldn't it be great if less women were only interested in ridiculously tall guys? Women think the same thing about their bodies being represented in media like that. Trans people just want to be allowed to live and not be identified as an XXX website search term, but that doesn't mean they hate it exists. All of this is to say that these are very complex topics worthy of the time it takes to better understand them. People of group X or Y are not a monolith with a singular snappy one liner being all that they believe about a subject, and that need for context is exactly as important on this subject as it is when discussing Gamegate.

While the controversy with Unicorn Overlord is questionable at best, complaining over making the game have a dialect more fitting for the time period, the problems with the translation of other games like Eiyuden Chronicles (have been really enjoying it so far) where they have optional and momentary dialogue of someone getting called a chud (this is also a medieval era fantasy game) I can see is more justified in their criticism
Even though I was a 27-year old fully cognizant adult ten years ago, I'm still not entirely aware of Gamergate's full picture. At the time, all I knew was the feminist game journalists were being harassed for their dumb hot takes. I think that, as an adult, I had stopped caring what game journalists were talking about a long time before that point...otherwise I may have been dragged into the quagmire with them. In hindsight, the biggest implication was the genesis of the current strain of uncompromising cultural reactionaries that have come to dominate the conservative political parties of nearly every western democracy today.

I swear, any bad movie book show or game would be considered woke by many people without seeing what’s actually wrong with the story, writing, characters, and even concept/continuity in all the media I mentioned.
As someone who's 'lucky' enough to play Japanese games in their original languages, I'd say my main issue when it comes to localisation is how it can change the way a character is presented, leading to a disconnect between the localised version and the original version. That said, translating from Japanese to English is far from easy and you can't expect the localised version to be 100% faithful. Unless you want the text to be stilted and unnatural, which... why would you? So yeah... I haven't played Unicorn Overlord yet, but seeing the screenshots, I agree that this controversy is beyond daft.

I completely disagree on your opinions on Stellar Blade. Any developer has the right to make the game (character design, revealing outfits, etc.) the way that they want. So, if a character is meant to wear revealing outfits, so be it. Also, the hard graffiti next to the letter R is not an issue whatsoever. People were reading too much into that.

Honestly, I was never really sold on the game but after seeing three videos of yours where you truly, obviously love the game and have brought up points and interesting elements of it to the point where I have to get the game next time it goes on sale. I really don't like conversations like this, your just taking the worst arguments and treating it like that's the whole discussion when it's not. Generally disagree with most things in this video and find it really disingenuous. Pairing the Mario and unicorn overlord Controversies with the others delegitimizes and causes a disconnect with the issues at hand making people already think the next ones you cover aren't actual problems. the unicorn overload thing is the only real issue that I simi-agree with you with, but I would say that if it wasn't for other localization companies wiping their butt with the source material to insert their own egos into the project that might have not happened.
the Stellarblade one I've seen people make this argument when they don't really even want to pretend to know what the outrage was about. Sony said that they weren't gonna censor the game and people bought the game based on the faith that they were going to keep that promise. When Sony eventually did censor the game the people got mad that they were lied to. Side note interesting how you left out the part where there were people on the internet saying that the game itself was sexist, how the person that designed the main character has never met a women before (even though the designer was a woman and the lead developers wife), how the dev team are just pathetic virgins that only made the character off of their desires of what the female body should be (even though the body is a scan of an actual models), and when the game came out there was article after article demanding the game to be censored. Interesting how that was left out of your segment. To just boil it down to it's just a bunch of gooners getting mad that they can't get off to the design anymore is just poisoning the well and preventing proper resolutions to issues.
15:40 the trap and trans thing is two different things entirely and more often than not the trans-change is never really genuine it's almost always for a political motives. Traps are not trans it's the male dressing up as a female for the fun of fooling people. Trans is someone going through gender dysphoria and uses several different methods to alter their body for them to better deal with that Dysphoria. One is for fun the other is a medical condition and to equate one as the other is disrespectful for both parties. People get mad at it because they not only realize the disrespect but the change completely messes up and ruins the core appeal of that character. Lastly doesn't the twitter crowed your appealing to hate it when trans people get sexualized? Why try and put them in the same camp.
lastly if you don't know what gamergate was why didn't you go search for what it was, Gamergate was at the start about journalistic integrity due to people finding out that there were gaming journalist giving glowing review scores / giving awards to games and companies that they had personal gain from it's success. When finding out about it people went to the platforms and websites telling their bosses about that and lead to some changes in the platforms and punishing the people involved. After that said journalist angry that their scheme was discovered came out with serval articles calling gamers sexist and bigots and racist. Leading to public outcry resulting in the gamergate movement to be born. After that it was constant backs and forwards in arguments that devolved into tribalism, grifting and gaslighting.
Making fun of people that use the word Woke towards superfluous things you can do that but if you don't look past those people and listen to the people that have legitimate complaints, your no better than those people you are laughing at and in some cases worse.

So I'm not going to address the entirety of your comment here because it's long and covers multiple topics, but here are a few things I wanted to say quick:
1.) The trap/femboy/trans thing in Japan is a really complicated situation that basically nobody in the discussion genuinely comprehends.
The reality of the situation is that Bridget and Vivian being considered Otokonoko is not proof of them not being trans. _Not saying you are making this claim here, just using these two to illustrate an example here._
You need to keep in mind that entertainment media is dictated from a top-down position. If you try to create something and the editors or the head of the company is against it then they can replace you, and you also need to keep in mind that Japan is both a very socially conservative country and also that socially they tend not to make a fuss about things to maintain social harmony. With all of that in mind, Otokonoko has long been considered a _safe umbrella term_ for sexual minorities and gender nonconforming characters in Japan. Until very recently if you planned to have a character like this they generally either needed to be comedic or have plausible deniability by not being fully explicit about what the character in question represents.
The same has actually been true here in the US, with a lot of this sort of representation being limited to things like the villain role in a Disney film. For example, Ursula the Sea Witch from _The Little Mermaid_ is based off of the famous drag queen Divine that performed from the 60's almost to the 90's. Ratigan from _The Great Mouse Detective,_ Scar from _The Lion King,_ among others, are extremely heavily queer coded in speech and mannerism. None of this is accidental, and it's not to say that any of these creatives hated people like this. Ironically, a lot of the time characters like these were included because it was the only sort of socially acceptable context that they could be used.
This can actually tie into the Stellar Blade comment a bit too, but when it comes to sexualization _it's fine._
Trans characters and people *can* be sexualized, so long as that is not the primary way in which they exist in popular culture. _That_ is the crux of the argument, and it ties into why so many people have an inherently negative on sight reaction to characters like 2B, Bayonetta, and Eve.
You need to understand that _sooooo_ many female characters _(and even living people)_ have long been used for sexually charged marketing. Go look up just how many female characters and actresses have been used for this even since early film.
Heck, look into Hedy Lamarr.
Absolutely gorgeous woman, prominent actress in her time. She was typecast as a bimbo in her acting roles, with her being a pioneer in frequency hopping _(a method of communication used in military radio and satellite communication and is heavily tied to message encryption)_ almost entirely ignored until the last 10 years or so. Also she *literally* escaped Benito Mussolini in a spy movie-esque manner, her life is extremely interesting.
As for trans people, their only real representation in popular culture for decades was as a naughty website search category. Being exasperated by the commonality of these sorts of things and pushing for representation beyond this is not meant to be seen as saying they can't _also_ happen, but it's basically like if damn near every single depiction of a man in television and games was a short balding fat guy for whatever reason. It would be super annoying if that was the singular depiction of masculinity in media 90% of the time, yes you can find somebody that happens to look like this and use them as a model but it's not representative of the wider world and ito cynical people it can come off as an excuse to continue spreading a media-enforced stereotype that has negative effects in the real world.
Like, wouldn't it be great if less women were only interested in ridiculously tall guys? Women think the same thing about their bodies being represented in media like that. Trans people just want to be allowed to live and not be identified as an XXX website search term, but that doesn't mean they hate it exists.
All of this is to say that these are very complex topics worthy of the time it takes to better understand them. People of group X or Y are not a monolith with a singular snappy one liner being all that they believe about a subject, and that need for context is exactly as important on this subject as it is when discussing Gamegate.

so for the bridget controversies specifically keep in mind my knowledge is basically just a explanation video on the character herself i played xrd and strive and she was only in strive where i did see her full arcade mode but basically she was forced to dress and act like a woman despite being a guy which made her run away but now in strive she wants to be a woman anyway like it kind of feels like you get the bad ending in a way. it's very clear the creator always intended her to be trans but couldn't do it back in the day so he went with a story that resembles something trans people probably go trough. like really her situation is more that it just doesn't go well with the story she was put in. the bridget situation does have a few more layers to them but it did become a bigger deal and people started screaming woke which is stupid because fighting games have always been pretty progressive with stuff like chun li and dj being one of the first strong female playable characters and one of the first good black characters in video games and later on poison being one of the first trans reps like one of the big pillars in fighting games is expressing yourself and that does include trans and any other lgbtq rep hack in strive tastement is non binary and people didn't complain about it then. but yeah the problem with bridget is that it bad or inconsistent writing in her character mainly because of how they where forced to write her back in the day. sorry for the long comment but i did want to explain a bit about the bridget situation because sadly like twitter and reddit does best they just turned it into "trans equals bad" which is stupid vivian is still amazing i'm happy they finally made it official that was a localisation problem that actually was bad.
