The federal and state governments have spent more than $19 trillion fighting poverty. But what has really been accomplished with all of that funding? This special half-day conference brings together a wide range of experts from across the political spectrum to discuss whether the War on Poverty succeeded in reducing poverty in the United States, what remains to be done, and whether private charitable efforts would be a better alternative to government welfare programs.
John McWhorter teaches linguistics at the Center for American Studies at Columbia University.

Gosh, I aspire to be the John McWhorter for my race/ethnic group and my (bla-bla-bla group) mainly because his ideas make sense to me in my dream of ending poverty and raising the situation of my race/ethnic group or my (bla-bla-bla).

The key is massive action….work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. No excuses

No. Some people are just stupid about money. If you were to redistribute all,the wealth in America so that every is equal, in a year there will be millionaires and poor people.

His take on pre-civil rights Black life and employment is very interesting.

I don't know about making narcotic drugs legal. Meth, Heroin and Fentanyl are very potent, much more so then alcohol. And pain killers/sleeping pills often lead people to the stronger dugs. You might not have the crime associated with drug dealing, but you'll have a lot more dead people due to overdosing and DWIs.

You cant do anything about poverty as long as the class systems exist! You can give people money and refuse to allow anyone to fall below $12,000 or 13,000 a year.

But there will still be poverty as long as the class system exists.

@gary grine Saying there is no class system is way too clueless to address.

@gary grine try being born with a birth defect I just kept getting sick. Elementary school missed a bunch sick same with middle school high school and all my jobs and college. I tried to make it out of poverty but even when I was paid well I got taxed so high I ended up only making it slightly above the poverty line. Now I'm disabled worked from 15-30 they didnt count the years under 21 into my disability points that they use to calculate what I get. I don't make enough to survive. I have a disease that requires a lot of experimental medications at the end of the month I'm usually -120 in the hole and that's with food stamps. Luckily I have some great friends IRL and online who know I'm struggling. I dont know how I would make it without them.

@Rebecca Mattis The very fact that there has always been poverty, tells me that there have always been class divisions in most societies. As a result, there will always be political movements because no one wants to be poor. Maybe in some far distant future we will have the technology to ensure abundance for everyone. In the meantime, there will be the wealthy and there will be the poor.
