- At The Atlantic Fest, we asked today's leading voices the questions that were on everyone's minds. In The Big Question, we focused on the less-asked, but just as fascinating, queries.
John McW is one of our foremost models of clear thinking and articulate speech.
did you call a black man articulate????????
@@TJ-kk5zf Haha...I don't know who it was (wish I remembered his name)...Some interview on T.V. a few years ago. It was a black professor, and when he spoke I just loved his command of English. Had a great vocabulary, and spoke in a very unique way. It was beautiful. I wanted to read his works. I love English spoken well, no matter who it comes from. If one loves language spoken well, that is just the way it is.
People can be "clear thinking" and think differently. That's why we're all different.
@@TJ-kk5zf , he did, bc the black man being commented on is one of the most articulate humans on the planet.
@@jwhippet8313 I agree. I was being PC sarcastic😎
john mcwhorter truly inspires me! i'm so grateful for his work, and his existence
He makes you think...
I could listen to this man talk about {whatever he wants to talk about}. I love clear, cogent, articulate speech no matter the topic. It's beautiful.
I love listening to John, I always learn something new and then have to go on and do further research of my own. In other words, he gets me thinking!
Thank you so much for sharing your incredible wisdom, John. I hope you’re well and safe and healthy!!
John McWhorter is so thoughtful. And well, himself. As for MLK, I remember as a very young kid my mom crying after we watched the news on TV that MLK was assassinated. She just broke down. She sobbed. My mom had never cried about anything, at least not in front of me. But that. JM's interview had me thinking about something else. What if Lincoln hadn't been assassinated? What if Reconstruction succeeded?
Fast forward...In the 1990s, there was a lot of stuff going on in southeast Europe. The Balkan wars. Communism was going away but fracturing to ethnic and religious and other stuff. I met with some people from Albania. There was a lot of centuries'-old nationalist and religious fury, much of which I thought could go off the rails very quickly. They asked me a lot about America and for insight. I gave them a copies of MLK's small book, The Strength to Love. They had already read our US Constitution, and other docs. They found his book enlightening and challenging and meaningful. As much as I disagree with religion and CRT, I have to say I thought his message meaningful.
I saw Sunset Boulevard quite recently, and what struck me about the movie, besides how skilled Billy Wilder was as a screenwriter and director, was how kind Mr. Mayer was when she visited the set. He offered her his chair and quickly advised the propmaster to stop contacting Ms. Desmond about renting her old car. He carefully lets her preserve her delusion as much as possible, and the actors on set treat her like visiting royalty. I also thought it was very sweet when her handsome “house guest” offered comfort when she was so devastated. Let’s suppose her first husband/director/butler had not spent all those years assisting Ms. Desmond, helping her maintain her delusion by writing her fake fan letters and taking the locks off the doors to keep her on suicide watch. I wonder if she might have eventually come to grips with reality and adjusted to her new life, maybe as a character actress or coach… My favorite movie line is from “Remember the Titans” when the locals threaten Denzel Washington’s character, and he comes out onto his porch with a rifle and says, “I will not be intimidated.” That resonated with me because, as an underwriter during 2007, 2008, and beyond, there was often pressure put on underwriters to pretend not to see things or to approve bad loans. You had to stand up to loan officers and the sales team. As an underwriter, your reputation for integrity was everything.
Where have I been? I am your newest and biggest fan, Mr. McWhorter. I need look no further for a voice of reason. No further.
just when i started counting my lucky stars for moving out of america to the UK but still some-what wanting to abandon their tongue even wanting now to learn another language (which i believe he actually speaks about in another video as being very beneficial anyway), john goes and restores all my faith in the english language :-)
Very interesting take on keeping MLK alive... I never thought of those 2nd,3rd,4th,5th order, etc effects of his influence being lost, but I would have to agree 100%...
Racist can hide amongst the non racist bc the ones slinging accusations at who's racists always hit the ones who arent racist.. so they miss their target and it ultimately becomes counter productive. If we had more MLK in out lives, i bet we'd be able to more surgically root out the last bit racism that exsists today
The only depressing thing here is the relatively scant amount of views and likes in today's world.
Great comment about the MLK Jnr assassination. As a white guy, it's probably the one thing I'd change if I had a time machine.
An incredible person!
More wisdom from the great John McW.
Abstruse! (had to look it up) Love this guy.
You are brilliant John.
Nice guy, very eloquent in describing his preferences. Surprised by the 2016 Trump Twitter statements for people in 100 years, mine might have been the rise of socialism and multiculturalism ideology in western culture.
This is great! Thanks
William Barber is from the King school of activist.
He has a podcast called lexicon valley.its pretty good
Lexicon valley is fantastic! You always walk away understanding something that you didn't before.
John is such an absolute dude!! I think I'd actually be start struck if I ever met him
Good point about MLK.
Youre a beatufiful person. On this day 22nd march alone and in need of a laugh and a need to be stimulated , Am watching you. Thank you john, from Yorkshire England . You are so intersting! Wish i was married to you seriously. Thanks
Me too me too me too!
The simpsons have been my source of inspiration on race relations. Even though Lenny is technically yellow, he and Carl have been good friends for at least 25 years.
Smart as hell
AGREE 👍
This man is very smart
John is one of my favorite public intellectuals. I’d love for him to pair up with Denesh D Souza to make a documentary based on his book “Losing The Race”. I think Denesh has a lot of interesting insight having lived in a poor country, prior to coming to the U.S.
me yesterday i was so tired i couldn't even make a change
Martin and Malcolm came closer to each other in ideology and practice before they were killed.
If a sampling from Twitter were put in a time capsule, ESPECIALLY from the day after Trump was elected, it would be highly embarrassing. Of course, I realize that none of us would be here, but no stinkin' way do I agree with that. How about an Elvis Presley record? That sounds a lot better. Or Ray Charles.
No sir you are not the worst sports person in the entire world I have to take that crown for myself
Dont agree with his book selection. Stephen J. Gould came up with the theory of evolution called " Punctuated equilibrium " what this means in simple terms is that a bird lays an egg and gets a baby bird, then one day he lays an egg and a dinosaur pops out. !!
This really stems from not really knowing how different species evolved.
A very weak theory in my view.
He acknowledged that “some of the science had been disputed” but liked the overall message.
I knew race would somehow make its way out of his mouth.
He has good things to say on the matter which could help us all. IMHO.
Does that bother you
And why not? John McWhorter's approach offers hope for improvement in race relations and in the lives of regular black people not just resentment and intellectual systems for collective tantrum throwing.
