I have been a film photographer for over 25 years, it is the only format that I have ever used: in concise terms, I am a darkroom film photographer. It is great to see you give this process a try. Some suggestions: Your film changing bag was a great investment. Remember to pull the bag's sleeves over your shirt sleeves, you want a tight, snuggling grip around your arms to keep light from entering the bag (if you don't shut off the light). You don't always have to cut the leader. At times, if you can get the leader into the grooves, you can pull the film through the groves & then advance your roll with back & forth movement, the typical maneuver for rolling film into your reel. You had the right thinking about not cutting the film leader but if you are inexperienced with loading film, I could see why you might have thought the film leader was in the way. As for temperature control, you could use a Sous Vide or a temperature control device from Cine Still. It would increase or decrease your chemistry bath, precisely. If you like the process, give it another go, if not, at least you had a chance to try it out. Success to you & your Life.
@@christopheroliver148good day & I agree. B/W processing & developing can teach consistency as well. I love that you talk about your anxiety so freely! I can totally relate to dreading leaving the house to go to the store but then enjoying it once you’re there. ❤
The photos at the end nearly made me cry out of pride and happiness for you! ❤ this whole video was very inspiring, I haven’t developed film since high school and I’d like to get back into one day!
I don't know how I stumbled across your videos (reddit I think a few months ago), but I'm so glad I did. I'm a middle aged dude going through a tough time with my bipolar, other mental health, and knock on effects to my career. And just seeing the shared experiences and how you get through them with your incredible attitude is just inspiring.
YOU'RE DOING AMAZING!!!! Seriously the amount of energy and effort it takes to learn a whole new hobby and potentially mess up as an adult with young kids is SO MUCH, I'm blown away!!!
Okay I feel SO SEEN with the afraid to be in public, but when you finally get up and go it's not so bad. You're the best for sharing these hyperfocus journeys with us, thank you ❤ I feel so validated (this was me with resin art at the beginning of the panny, crocheting in 2022-23, and sewing/quilting this year 😂
I struggle with leaving the house also bc of my anxiety. I, like you, have always been an introvert, or maybe an extroverted introvert at social gatherings. My not feeling comfortable leaving the house really started post pandemic. I was already nervous pre pandemic, but I made it through. Post pandemic, I have panic attacks in the grocery store, which definitely doesn’t help me want to try going out more. Vicious cycle. So, good for you for going out and making it through! ❤️
There is something comforting about the fact that I went to photography school 30 years ago and the equipment hasn’t changed AT ALL. I’m having all the feels watching this.
I’m really proud of you for trying new things. As a person with pretty severe anxiety, you encourage me so much. It’s honestly kind of healing for me to watch you struggle and succeed. I am going to take up sewing again and watching you tackle different hobbies gets me so stoked!!
Trying new hard things is always worth it! It’s awesome to see you lean into this new hobby/skillset! Also, thanks for the crochet inspiration. I made one stuffed animal and now I can’t stop.
True Story. Out of absolutely nowhere in the late 1990’s I developed an absolute crippling anxiety every time I went in a store. The kind of anxiety that makes others call 911. I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on with me until finally, I figured out it came out every time I spent money. Didn’t matter if I was purchasing a necessity or not. After a while it started to get a little better. If you are in any way telling yourself you could be broke soon, that could be what’s bothering you in stores. Or not. Love your video’s, and you are SUCH a good singer!
I took a dark room class for 2 terms at a local tech school, it was by far my favourite photography class!! I had so much fun learning to shoot film, developing it and learning something new.
Omg, I remember doing this in highschool photography class and yesssss, getting the film on the spool is always so frustrating! No matter how you do it, cut the leader or no. I'm so glad you were able to push through and figure it out!
No freakin' way!!! I took photography in my early teens, had all the stuff. Mom n Dad put aluminium foil over the bathroom window to make it a darkroom. I had everything. Developed one roll but it didn't turn out as well as what I did in class at the studio. Never did it again. It seemed SOO hard! The class was something like six weeks long. And look at you killing it on your own. Oh yeah. Your motto, "how hard can it be?" 😂 You're so awesome and inspiring!!
Thanks for sharing your real moments and struggles. I watch your videos and it’s like finding a song that explains your inner most feelings that you could never express yourself. It’s very helpful to me any my journey. So thanks for having the courage to share.
They way you were talking about anxiety making you not want to leave your house and how you forget stuff. I go through that too. I think lockdown made it worse. This makes me miss working in the darkroom.
Ruminating on your mistake way longer than is necessary makes me feel seen and heard 😅 I swear you do so much for the ADHD community by sharing your authenticity! It normalizes all those moments we struggle through with grace and humor!
I took photography my senior year of high school in 2000/2001 and we developed negatives and made prints in a dark room. I also got all the stuff to develop my negatives at home. It was so fun. I still remember the smell of all the chemicals.
Loving seeing your development in photography, especially film! I’ve always wanted to try film photography as I usually do digital, it’s great seeing how you develop your photos! ❤
This was super cool!!! I admire your power to persevere even through panic, anxiety and just real frustration. OH MAN I ENJOY THIS WAY MORE THAN I THOUGHT I WOULD!!!! SUPER COOL.
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!! Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. I’ve always gotten really embarrassed to share things I’m currently hyperfixated on but I’m working on sharing them with people and allowing them the opportunity to connect with it if they want or to continue passing through and find the thing they’re looking for. This is so rediculous I know but seeing your last couple sentences in all caps made me have a quick little cry from happiness. It just means a lot, so thank you. 🥹♥️ I love watching content of people that LOVE what they’re doing or talking about simply because they love it, and your encouragement reinforced that in me. So thank you for everything!!!!!!! So much love to you!!!

This is so cool. Also so relatable on just a moment of not having the battery and like the panic and stress. I do that so many times on a project, I could feel your panic! The film turned out awesome, this is so cool. Brings back memories of high school photography class!
Watching this was so fun. I take all the pictures on our family vacations and really enjoyed setting up monthly pics for my kids when they were babies. I've always thought it would be cool to learn more about photography but have never gotten around to it. Also, thank you so much (again) for sharing your experiences with anxiety. It gives me hope for my daughter that she will find her way in this world.
I love love love this so much. I took two years of photography classes in high school (2002-2004) and it was one of my favorite things ever. We got to develop our own negatives and print photos in the dark room. Best memories.
Awesome! Those three photos of you at the end.. LOVE them. So good. I remember doing this in high school the one semester I took photography. It was nerve wracking!
I made my career in photography! Retired now, but still shooting for myself. I so enjoyed watching you trying it & getting such a kick out of it! And I LOVE foot shots! Well done.
This reminds me of myself. A few years ago I developed an interest in astronomy...then from there telescopes and all the gear...and then astrophotography. All of this happened over the course of weeks/months. I became super obsessed, and ended up with a $1400 Celestron telescope and my first for real DSLR camera (I've been a photography junkie my whole life, but this took it to another level). I got really into it for awhile...and then it just...stopped. LOL. But hopefully you can enjoy this for awhile. PS, glad you're able to enjoy some things despite having a sweet little son to take care of with his surgery and all. I have two sweet sons, one of which we had a heart scare with last year. I know how you feel! 🥰

I took photography class in the early 90s (doing b&w and large format b&w) and had sooo much fun in the lab developing the film and printing photos the old fashioned way in a dark room! Great memories!!
I learned to develop B&W in high school in the mid 80s, doing the prints too. I loved it, bought the whole dark room set up, used it for a few years until I got married. A few years later we bought a house with the perfect spot but my kids were little and my husband was not supportive. Digital came along and i sold the entire set up. I wish i hadn't. Never used distilled water as far as i recall. Colour is a whole other animal!!!

I believe in you, you can do the thing!!
This was i think the first long form video of yours I've watched, and i don't regret it for a second. I've seen glimpses of your photography on social media, i saw that excellent self portrait the other day but watching this little journey made that picture all the more beautiful. So glad to see you facing your fears and anxieties head on, and trying something new! The pictures turned out beautifully, and with so much time and effort put into it. I hope you feel so proud of yourself and that that work was was rewarding for you to do as it was for us to watch. 🥰
This is amazing!! I’m a freelance photographer and it’s my life passion! i love to see people get into photography!! THE SPOOL THING GOT ME. DUDE. ITS SO HARD AT FIRST! You did a great job trying to stay calm. Seriously I think the first time I threw the film into the trash and had my professor help me 😭😭😭 good job elyse!
You should definitely watch her stuff regularly. She is so inspiring.
@@amyh2888 Definitely! I have been watching consistently for about a month now. It's been great!
YOU'RE DOING AMAZING!!!! Seriously the amount of energy and effort it takes to learn a whole new hobby and potentially mess up as an adult with young kids is SO MUCH, I'm blown away!!!
Your brain is such a treasure trove. TYSM for sharing it's creative blessings with us!
Okay I feel SO SEEN with the afraid to be in public, but when you finally get up and go it's not so bad. You're the best for sharing these hyperfocus journeys with us, thank you ❤ I feel so validated (this was me with resin art at the beginning of the panny, crocheting in 2022-23, and sewing/quilting this year 😂
I actually LOVE the "ruined" ones. That colour is everything!!
I love this and would watch all of the longer-form content that you post. Much enjoy! Much like!
This is so kind! Thank you! 🥹
it's so wonderful watching you have fun with film & enjoying yourself! thank you for sharing
🤗😍🎉Love following your journey! Thank you for including us.
Congratulations! Proud of you!
your openness is inspiring
There is something comforting about the fact that I went to photography school 30 years ago and the equipment hasn’t changed AT ALL. I’m having all the feels watching this.
I’m really proud of you for trying new things. As a person with pretty severe anxiety, you encourage me so much. It’s honestly kind of healing for me to watch you struggle and succeed. I am going to take up sewing again and watching you tackle different hobbies gets me so stoked!!
As a viewer, I love so much when creators cut in when they're editing and explain funny things. Great job!
I LOVE that very last one!!! ❤❤❤ Great shot!!
Thanks for the epic realness and frustrations of trying something new that you’re genuinely excited about. Love it!
OMG YAY!!!!!! You did it! I totally get the store anxiety. It gets done, but it's exhausting.
I’m glad I’m not alone!
Trying new hard things is always worth it! It’s awesome to see you lean into this new hobby/skillset!
Also, thanks for the crochet inspiration. I made one stuffed animal and now I can’t stop.
AWESOME JOB! Yes, you did it! This was fun to watch! Thanks for sharing the journey!
Oh yeah. Your motto, "how hard can it be?" 😂
You're so awesome and inspiring!!
I love this SO much! I used to love developing the film back in school and this brought me back. Congrats on getting them developed!
“I’m not nervous, I’m excited… just my body doesn’t know the difference!” FELT that so deeply!
You putting the roll on in the dark is the most relatable thing I've ever watched thank you!
Loving seeing your development in photography, especially film! I’ve always wanted to try film photography as I usually do digital, it’s great seeing how you develop your photos! ❤
fk yeah, they came out so good, even the first batch - that had so much cool "film" character. Good pics as well 🙌👌
This was super cool!!!
So much love to you!!! I came over from the other social platforms and I'm so glad to dove deeper into the world of Elyse cause I think you are a powerful human in this world and you really do make such a wonderful impact with you being you... at least in my life. So thank.
Well done!!! Thank you for sharing this adventure with us. I smiled the whole time. You're a bright light in the world 😊
I'm so proud of you for doing all of that! Especially the second batch came out beautiful! Achievment unlocked!
I feel so damn proud of you! You wanted to do the thing, there were small setbacks & some emotional moments but in the end… you’re DOING THE THING!! Congratulations 🎉
This was such a journey! Proud of you for persevering, I had such a big smile on my face when you said "OMG I did it!" ❤
They came out beautiful, Congrats Elyse!! What an emotional journey, your artistic escapades are so inspiring to me!
❤️❤️❤️ I loved seeing this. It was so incredibly relatable seeing your reaction to the process of doing something new. It turned out great.
This is so cool.
Also so relatable on just a moment of not having the battery and like the panic and stress. I do that so many times on a project, I could feel your panic!
The film turned out awesome, this is so cool.
Brings back memories of high school photography class!
You are not the only one with store issues! Pick up services and Amazon are my saviors.
I enjoy you so much as a human. You're such a delight. And hey, you DID IT!!!
Elyse I love your channel I feel like you are my big sister .. who is probably younger than me 😂 you have the vocabulary I need to describe how I feel. Thank you for your positive content in such a crazy world. I usually don’t comment just because I feel like who’s going to read it really… but when I hear the negative comments were coming at you on tik tok I felt it was my duty to start commenting and sharing my positive experience with your videos! Sending love from CO!! ❤
Thank you for sharing your journey through life and being vulnerable. You really inspire me to be creative again and not to be self conscious of my extreme anxiety and being introverted.
I just really want to say thank you for helping me feel that it’s ok to be me. ❤
Exposure therapy! You're really doing it! ❤ i remember developing our own film in high school (our school had a dark room). I loved it!!!
Omg - this is so real… loved it!!! The struggles were handled in such grace… proud of your persistence!
The way the music in parts of this video is like intense countdown music then chill piano lounge music is one of my favorite parts! 😆
I couldn't care less about developing film and yet watched the entire video to see if you'd succeed! Thanks for the journey Elyse :)
i love the way the "ruined" shots came out! very cool light leaks & texture
Proud of you’re for doing C41 before black and white! Next time, if you get frustrated and need to take a break, just put the roll of film into the sealed container and close it, and walk away and come back. My first time developing film myself took FOREVER because of the same reason.
Your persistence inspires me to push through when I feel like that with my anxiety. Thank you for sharing this!
I love when she talks directly at us and I appreciate getting to stay warm inside😂❤! Middle of Canada here and our place is under 5 ft of snow!
Also, thank you for the meal idea, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to eat. It I’m making THAT! 🥑🍳
heck yes!! this was such a journey and i loved every moment of it! ty ty ty ty! great job!!
This was awesome. When I was nine I developed black and white photos from my very own canon AE1. We did the part you did in a bag in a closet.
That feeling when you see that, YAY, the film actually developed!!! Thank you for revisiting your joy.
Elyse, I think you can well and truly say "I can do hard things". Holy shit girl 🤯
I loooooove your long form video blogs and the jazzy little lunch interlude.
That's so cool! I'm so proud of you! Thank you for sharing your endeavor into developing your own film! Thank you for also sharing your struggles and your anxiety. It helps to see that I'm not alone in having anxiety. :)
I'm a newborn photographer. In college I learned on film and we had to learn how to develop. I found it so relaxing and satisfying. I don't get to do it anymore but you have just made me want to stay off my 35mm!!
I saw the reel with Jonas ("the Prognosticator") asking if you'd be developing film at home 😂 I love that you did this! Your creative mind is amazing! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽
this is amazing!!!!!!! i love your videos, hearing you talk through your anxiety & work through your frustration is so comforting and inspiring. the pics turned out so so good. happy for you ❤
I too am going through my film photography hyper fixation and have been wanting to try and develop my own film so this video came at the perfect time! Thank you Elyse!
I know the pain so well of having your hands in the changing bag for 30+ min and ur hot and getting sweaty fingerprints all over the film and u feel like ur going to die unless you get that damn film on 😅
but also the excitement and relief when you open it up and realize that yes there's actual photos on there.. can't be beat!! u did great!
I’m LOVING your full videos! ❤
I swear I feel so seen in most of your videos! I have social anxiety but it feels amazing after I push through an outing. We would have so much to relate with, you are my online friend. I don’t have friends but at this point, that feels safe to me. 😂
Love you just being yourself! So fun.
I love it!! Nice photo's! We dit this the first 2 years of my belgian art school (photography). Loved every second of it! It is sooooo different then digital photography!
Thanks for letting me see the process again 😊 i think it is my time to make my dark room in my storageroom/basement again ❤.
Love to see more of this ✨
I'm so proud of you! Congratulations!!!!
I used to work as a slide developer for a hospital for their presentations and I did the same thing in a bag. At first it took so long for me to figure it out, but I eventually got it. You'll get used to doing it in the bag!
I have to say I LOVE the longer content.
I am not a big fan of shorts. Or short form content. So the “tock”. Is not my place. But RUclips is!!!! So i am just so happy ur making longer videos.
