From what I've heard the hardest part of rat ownership is actually the short lifespan of rats (2-3 years). Imagine having one of the most loving companions ever for only 2 years of your life. Probably one of the most bittersweet experiences ever.

I had to take a rat from my POS brother because he was neglecting her, keeping her in an old dwarf hamster cage i had (seriously, give your pets the correct amount of space) , she had gotten mites because he refused to change her bedding, etc. Before i took her, she was aggressive, didnt let anyone near her. When i got rid of the mites (he wanted to just put her down because he didnt want to bother actually taking care of his pet 🤬) she became the sweetest of sweet babies. Youd think she was a completely different rat. RIP Optimus Prime 🩵

Rats are among the best pets you can have. Sadly they don't live long enough. You need to expect to have heartbreak every 2-3 years. Imagine if you lost a child every couple of years.
Rats are like tiny puppies. The will steal your heart and then break it.

My girl and I raised a rescued squirrel that was separated from her mom and family during a storm. She took to us like mom and dad because we were there when she first opened her eyes. This little squirrel ended up having an unreal personality! Very intelligent also, she was poddy trained to go on her poddy pads which we kept in each room and we let her make her nest in our bedroom closet and every morning at 6:30ish she would wake me up by jumping down right next to my pillow lol. She loved snacks, playing around with us and her stuffed toys and hiding her favorite treats (pecans) all over the house lol. When it was her bedtime, we turned down the TV and she would snuggle my girlfriend by laying on her neck and throat until she fell asleep. She slept hard too because I would pick her up and put her up in her closet nest and most of the time she wouldn't even wake up at all. She was my favorite pet but she was meant to live outside and meet a mate so we released her at a sanctuary for animals, mostly squirrels and raccoons. I think about her, Quirrely is what we called her, almost daily and pray that she met a mate and lives great

      Charlie
      Likely she did.
      My friend rescued a few.
A particular one would venture out and return daily as he matured.
Eventually he no longer returned to his little cage and didn’t allow her to handle him any longer.
But he would come close to talk to her and take peanuts that she would leave for him.

My kid used to have a pet mouse, and he'd literally only poop in 1 spot of his cage/home - & then when it got a little too full, he would push all the poop and bedding from that spot through the cage bars and out of his cage. He was a neat freak. Also, very loving.

My friend bred rats and one of her fave breeders HATED living with other rats so she was left alone and just given extra love by my friend. Then she started killing her babies so she stopped being bred. One of her friends wanted a pet rat so she gave Rose (the rat) to her. But she wasn’t taking proper care of Rose (mad that she couldn’t throw her in a communal cage) so my friend asked if I would take her with me when I moved. Miss that damn rat

  • @ML7WL

They have relative short lives (2-3 years), have red snot that looks like they're bleeding from orifices and eyes, are propense to have respiratory diseases, can cause property damage by chewing eletric cables and die for doing it, do "eye boggling" when happy (may scare people who don't know xD) and, to me the most important, are persistent territory demarkers: if you clean his/her cage they will almost imediatly pee or poo again, because they're very scent sensitive...their place MUST "smell like themselves". Atleast it's the pee that has a strong smell, not the animal itself (like foxes for example)...atleast I suspect is like this...

I had two rats when I was 18. Pixie and Dixie. They were lovely and loved to lay and sleep in my hood on my hoodies.. (actually I had them with me to places I would never do today (18 and not so smart) like to grocery stores 😅 today I'm really happy that no one ever saw them there in my hood.. because alot of people are scared of rats and too many doesn't get the difference between pet rats and wild rats..
If i didn't have cats now I would without doubt getting 2 again.
Rats are really smart and you can train them to do like everything, I would say they are smarter and more easily trained than dogs!❤

Imean they might groom alot bit they also pee and poop alot. They can be potty trained, but still poop and pee gets thrown and sprayed out of the cage and when they free roam they will also do little pees all over. So be prepaired for that. Also they smell.
I love them and they are super cute, but just saying how clean they are without mentioning how messy they also are is a bit of a misrepresentation.

    • @thisperson8441
      @thisperson8441 13 дней назад

Females are far less likely to mark. The marking is actually not that much pee all considering, and it is a behavior you can potentially train them out of. Heck, even mice can be potty trained, at least to an extent. My last mouse almost never peed or crapped on me and usually stuck to one spot in her cage to do so, and I didn't even train her to do that. Expect more crap (which is actually quite easy to clean up) than pee just in general.
