I always thought the beginning "tink" "tink" "tink" sounds were being done by tapping on glasses of water, didn't know you could get that sound out of a guitar.
I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate you and your channel!! Over the years you've taught me so much, and I'm very happy and thankful you're doing Tool lessons again!
Thank you! I'm glad you find my lessons helpful and incorporate them. I don't have playthrough videos of these lessons. It's time-consuming and copyright issues galore. I just stay away.
Another great lesson! A tough lesson to do, definitely lots of explaining when I comes to Tool. A lot of little things I never noticed before like the open triplet in the main riff. "Nothing worst than 'click' hearing you step on the distortion pedal" That was hilarious!
Also...your "longwindedness is what sets you apart! Dont change that part. You explain the riffs in a way anyone can understand. Adam Jones isnt the best guitarist, but he and all of the band are good at odd time signatures so his riffs can still be difficult (not counting their last album). You have a good ear for the intricacies of guitarists and you are good at explaining them. Keep it up. Dont change.
A way to do the beginning rhythm is to touch the e string by the bottom of the bridge pickup, toward the bridge and touch the next string down nearly on top of the first magnet closest to the bridge, if you pick between the bridge and ehere you are pinching it should sound almost perfect try it out!
This song takes people to places they've never been in concert I know because it's happened to me when I was at the concert and you know you've been taken there for real that's why TOOL RULLES !!! &. That's why they say you either get TOOL or you don't & probably never will !!!!!!?? TOOL IS THE best
TOOL IS & ALWAYS WILL BE THE BEST BAND THERE HAS EVER BEEN !!!!! NO Question about it !!!!!!!! BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT DON'T WE. !!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
Great lesson Greg :). Would you ever consider doing an APC Weak and Powerless bass lesson? The intro is killer and I've never been able to play it properly.
Nice style. Seems to me you simplify this a bit too much though. You need more hits in the open version of the main riff. You need a quick 000 before the 555-999 and before the 777-999. You are missing all the open hits in the riff starting at 7:30 in this video There is more but now I am tired.
Psiink There's alot of things wrong here (like the jambi style triplet on the first two verse chuggs). There's definitely no open hits between the 555-999 777-999 parts though (I like to add one in just before the paused 77-9 part tho to change it up abit). A decent set of headphones will correct this for you. Everyone hears and interprets different aswell. Cheers.
Adam does a finger pull off in the verse part, it's actually not a triple pick he is doing. There are a few videos on how he does it! Super cool technique.
Thanks !! Killer video ! I’ve been playing this song for the past few weeks . I have probably 90% of it down and your lesson pointed out what I need to work on . I will be watching many more . Thanks again
Thanks so much dude! Trying to learn it for a special someone xD Peace and Love keep on shredding ur great at guitar man! Love hearing u play and teach.
Hey Greg, looks like you're using S-Gear and was wondering besides the VL10 what else in involved in this signal chain? Love the chug sounds you're getting in this video. :)
Hey you, thanks for this awesome tutorials, you said you use a volume pedal and i didnt understand the name and modell. Could you please write me? I really love your stuff :)
Thanks for this tutorial - really helpful - but where are the tabs you refer to? there is no link to the guitar pro tab and there aren't any PDFS on your site
Gotta love Adam Jones great rythm and tones. Although playing Tool guitar parts is probably the easiest thing to do among the three instruments featured in their music.
Fair enough. Now of course this has nothing to do with admiring one less than the other. I mean if it wasn't for Jones there would be no Tool and I believe most of Tool's song start off from his visions and his unique playing. It's just that in my experience I have encountered many players that where able to nail Adam Jones's part not so much Justin's, maybe you are one of them, if that's the case man I'd love to jam with ya ;-)
i doubt it, his lessons are always spot on, doesn't mean he teaches it the way adam jones plays it, but the notes are always correct! either way, play it the way you like it, and the way it sounds accurate to you....
Dude dont take this the wrong way, but you sound drunk and high lol. But it's in a good way. You give THE BEST Tool tutorials on the entire RUclips! That being said...that intro rythm is played BEHIND the bridge on the...A string I believe? Or D? Anyways that's the only suggestion I have. Keep up the good work. Been watching your channel for a few years!
I think you may have the intro thing backward bro it's the guitar doing that little tune and Maynard's tapping the Mike with a tuning fork making the other noise... or maby he's tapping it with a clave..
That's some pretty awful tone and the reverb is overkill. Good lesson, but you add slides in the chorus that aren't there. As for the intro, I always put my fret hand near the bridge and pluck the B string. Can also get the same sound on the high E.
Correct. And so is the part during "Will you, will you now..." One of Adam's VIP sessions was recorded and posted here on youtube, and he actually demonstrates that part when he's explaining his triplet technique. It's a pull-off with the fretting finger, and then catching it with the pick on the way up, kinda like in Jambi/The Pot/Vicarious/etc...
There's slight variations he uses. In Eulogy/Hooker(and maybe others I'm forgetting), he doesn't use the A (like in Jambi/Vicarious). Just pulling off the E(D) and catching it with the pick. Same general idea though, just variation to it.
I do believe Maynard is going to town on a kazoo in the intro. If there are any Tool cover bands out there in need of a kazoo player I am available.
Actually, I believe it’s a megaphone
@DrVegtable
It's a Megaphone, not a kazoo, dumb fuck.
@@MrParkerman6 thanks for the correction. I just use the guitar with a Boss DD3 and a little bit of flanger. You?
@@MrParkerman6 Damn, you’re an angry little guy aren’t you?
so glad these full lessons are back!!!!
I've been playing this song on guitar for over 20 years and it never occurred to me to pick the beginning part. I just always thought it was Danny.
I always thought the beginning "tink" "tink" "tink" sounds were being done by tapping on glasses of water, didn't know you could get that sound out of a guitar.
Same tool is full of surprises 😂
Oh, yeah you can milk anything with nipples.
@@Dannyk-jh8lv LOL
On the recording It's Music Blocks, yu dumb ass! Not the guitars, and sure as fuck not glasses of Water.
Damn, and I always played the main riff like: ( 2 2 2 2 (x) 2 2 2 2 2 2 33 0 0 ) :/ But fck it, it sounds better to me this wrong way :D
Another great lesson! A tough lesson to do, definitely lots of explaining when I comes to Tool. A lot of little things I never noticed before like the open triplet in the main riff. "Nothing worst than 'click' hearing you step on the distortion pedal" That was hilarious!
That click is the worst!
"Standing above the crowd" ...Awesomeness!
I always thought he did that "Jambi" triplet pull-offs for those alternating palm muting and dead note verse passages...
He does. This lessons technique isn’t right.
The finger pull through yes this is way more complicated
Also...your "longwindedness is what sets you apart! Dont change that part. You explain the riffs in a way anyone can understand. Adam Jones isnt the best guitarist, but he and all of the band are good at odd time signatures so his riffs can still be difficult (not counting their last album). I actually hear the main riff as 2222 2222 0 2h3p2 0 repeat IMHO. I just really hear a hammer on pull off in there. You the man!
With the muted note in between the 2222s as you played it. Cool vid bud!
Just throw in a jambi style triplet on the 3rd fret without changing the pick pattern, much more subtle and better sounding.
Agree %100
Couldn't disagree more. I've seen them play it and Adam definitely doesn't do a hammer on or pull off.
A way to do the beginning rhythm is to touch the e string by the bottom of the bridge pickup, toward the bridge and touch the next string down nearly on top of the first magnet closest to the bridge, if you pick between the bridge and ehere you are pinching it should sound almost perfect try it out!

Could you do Bottom?
Closer vid
For all the tool complaints that he's playing it wrong, but offering no solutions...Perhaps, it's copyright infringement avoidance.
Possibly. The thought of detuning/setting up my bass for that is blah.
Cool BTBAM shirt...
You look like Sal the Stockbroker from the Howard Stern Show ;)
Great video. One of my fave songs of all time.
Sick BTBAM shirt! Hinting us at BTBAM lessons? :D

Yo you’ve taught me so much shit bro lol thank you
Love hearing the less favoured songs broken down, so much to learn.. Cheers man
Jesus, is it? It was one if the standout tool songs for me first time i heard it. What a tune

YESSSSSS FUCKING FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK U
Thanks for all the information you provided have you ever considered doing the Stranglehold lesson
Thanks so much dude! Trying to learn it for a special someone xD Peace and Love keep on shredding ur great at guitar man! Love hearing u play and teach.
Thanks man your Eulogy the best ,great tone to 😉👍
why are you playing the flat 2 on the verse. It doesnt go up to F bro. Lol
You are amazing for explaining the beggining, I appreciate how you go over these things!
Intro is played by picking the A and D strings between the stop bar tailpiece and bridge on a Les Paul.
That pull off part of the verse riff is it the same technique as jambi??
Thank you!!! U r friggin awesome!! Dig that KSL.
I dislike that you never play the full riff at the end
Fantastic lesson!!! Easily amongst my favorite Tool songs!! Thanks for putting this together \m/
You should do Crawl Away (?), the really fast one from Undertow.
I thought the main riff was a pull off from 2, 3 and pull off to an open D?
Hey Greg, looks like you're using S-Gear and was wondering besides the VL10 what else in involved in this signal chain? Love the chug sounds you're getting in this video. :)
It's just S-Gear for this video. Live I'll run VL10-Wah-Flange-Delays
Nice shirt B.
Hell yeah my favorite Tool song! Great video this song is easy

Ibanez VL10

ur da best bro thanks for all the tool lessons

Wish I could jam with ya
Enjoyed the video ! What are you using for your tones ?
S-Gear (Scuffham Amps)
Great lesson! Thank you!
Hell yeah! Great vid! Love Tool!
Could you do a video on melody writing and development?
Yes.
Gotta love Adam Jones great rythm and tones. Although playing Tool guitar parts is probably the easiest thing to do among the three instruments featured in their music.
You mean in Eulogy ? I was not referring to that song in particular but on their whole catalogue
:-) I see what you're trying to do there ... Please sit and drink more Pennyroyal tee

Yes. S-Gear from Scuffham amps.
Yes!
Would love to see you do a video on the entirety of Undertow.
Me too!

KILLER!!!!!
is a dead note an open string?
Thomas Fletcher no it's more like a muted note
👌🏻
Nice!
Wow. A lot of this is wrong
Yea a lot of this did not sound right. I used to play it much differently
Alfredo Wilson probably because you weren't playing it correctly...
john doe yea thats probably true but this just sounded off to me.
Yes. Yes it is.
i doubt it, his lessons are always spot on, doesn't mean he teaches it the way adam jones plays it, but the notes are always correct! either way, play it the way you like it, and the way it sounds accurate to you....

Talking too much
Between the buried and me /../,

Pretty sure the opening percussive riff if played the the Jambi pull off

Here's the section of him talking about it/playing it - ruclips.net/video/wJUL-lFmAk0/видео.htmlm58s
RP Rides don't you mean a pull off where he catches the a and d string with his pulloff finger...?
There's slight variations he uses. In Eulogy/Hooker(and maybe others I'm forgetting), he doesn't use the A (like in Jambi/Vicarious). Just pulling off the E(D) and catching it with the pick. Same general idea though, just variation to it.
RP Rides confusing
You sound a bit tipsy lol
