Not gonna lie, pretty jealous! One technique I’ve always loved that Adam uses that u didn’t show, is picking between the bridge and saddles, for that eerie sitar like quality. As he uses in “third eye” although it’s another one that can only be done on a guitar with a LP style bridge/saddle setup...try it using your “extended drop D chord shape, mainly on strings 2, 3 and 4...u’ll hear it

the thing i really love about Tool is how unique every single member sounds.
most bands might have a distinctive sound, but it's typically with one or two instruments (vocals not included, since every single band's vocals are different) like certain guitar tones or drum techniques.
but Tool is one of those bands that is so easily identifiable, like, even if they didn't invent a certain sound, anytime you hear it, you automatically think of Tool.
not even with just guitar, because the drums and bass also have a very distinct sound, like the huge sounding drums with complex patterns, or that clicky and fuzzy, but also dirty sounding bass.
even Maynard has his own Tool sound, like, despite being in A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, he sounds different in Tool, i don't really know how to explain it.
i know Tool fans have a reputation for sounding pretentious, but i truly mean it when i say they're such a unique, one of a kind band.

@teargazed if I remember correctly, Paul wanted to go back to guitar, so he had to leave the band. and so, Justin is TOOL's bassist since Aenima ( second album, 1996). today, TOOL's members are irreplaceable in the way of maintaining their "new" sound.
I mean, it is quite obvious how grungy "Undertow" and "Opiate" sounds. Since Aenima, it did change to a new direction.
if you replaced one of them, same might happen, leading to the loss of what is known as "TOOL" nowadays.
P.S: I really am curious about what might could have been with Paul!

I’m starting to think that if he wants to go for a cleaner type sound he just uses the volume pedal to lower the volume but stay on whatever channel he’s on. A lot of people like to bag on STP as derivative or copycats. I suppose that's true of their first album, but they really bloomed into their own thing and the Deleo brothers were both pretty great. Just too bad that Scott couldn't coexist with them and his problems.

@Luke Robinett Agree with you on Purple, disagree on Core. It was a solid debut, but that's all; there wasn't really anything that made it stand out from the rest of the pack.

On feedback: try changing the distance from the speaker. There is a physical relationship between the length of the string, the harmonic, and the distance from the speaker. You can change from say a second harmonic (string length divided by 2) to a third harmonic (string length divided by 3) by moving the guitar towards the speaker by that length difference. Appropriate EQ helps.
