    I like the part about not worrying too much cuz people at a bar won't nitpick, but that also goes for the big picture, Adam Jones is an artist and does things his own way, I think it's really neat that this guy just listens to the music and finds something similar, and I think it's well done and this video doesn't take itself too seriously. Thanks man!

    Uggggh, that no quarter. Can't wait for the lesson :c
    Awesome video, I loved that it wasn't some "Buy this amp and this pedal and blah blah blah" but it actually told you how he approaches his sound. I think the biggest part of his sound though is the way he plays, if you want to sound like Adam Jones, play like Adam Jones. Just the way he plays anything is super weird and I'd have never thought to play it like that. Watch the video of him playing part of Lateralus with the camera perspective being the top of his head stock, it's amazing to witness something like that.

    A huge part of his sound is phrasing, he's got a weird approach to playing and that makes it great

    • @pwnedshift1
      @pwnedshift1 8 лет назад

      can you elaborate?

    • @Chuggsbigman
      @Chuggsbigman 8 лет назад +11

      +pwnedshift1 sure, when I say phrasing, I'm referring to the way he plays, his own swing on the guitar. The slight difference to the way he plays it, compared to you or I.

    • @Liberteh
      @Liberteh 6 лет назад

      That has to do with dual amplification, not with the way it's played. For reference: Right in Two -> the part where the chorus ends and the string is bent before the (drum) solo starts. There you hear the phrasing. It's just something the gear produces, not a specific way he plays it. He just bends the 5th fret on the first string.

    • @Ponscurtat
      @Ponscurtat 6 лет назад +2

      it's just a flanger... and in the and he's right: the fingers are the singers, not the equipment. Only Adam Jones sounds like Adam Jones because he plays like Adam Jones.

      A big part of his rhythmic feel is straight up the result of Danny carry teaching him how drummers learn to count odd meters...literally feels just like the hi hat pattern a drummer would play when they are just starting to learn odd meters...7/4 1231212 double time 1&2&3&1&2&1&2& or learning polyrhythms...3 against 2 hot cuppa tea hot cuppa tea 3 against 4 (aenema) pass the goddamn butter pass the goddamn butter

      I actually mean it... If you can run two amps, one with a bit scopped mids and the other with lots of mids it blends very nicely. I take no credits in this as this is taken from pictures and forum post about dual/triple amp setup of Jones.

    • @timothyhammonds
      @timothyhammonds 7 лет назад

  • @paulsguitarstudio126
    @paulsguitarstudio126 6 лет назад +6

    One thing, get a VH4 pedal period, if you cannot afford a Diezel VH4 amp the pedal does it pretty much dead on. Far as amp(s) there's a vast range of what you can do. A Marshall like heavy tone like a SuperBass model w the VH4 is it. Nothing gets the distortion structure gain without the VH4. I recently got a Origin Custom Drive and really that puppy runs the gamut of everything cool any Marshall or any amp you can imagine as to why and how it sounds great. Depth, definition, quality distortion just because you play the notes it is a much different tone. Hint as well the "ghosting" effect the Origin Drive is able to do adds that sort of discrete double ambience that Tool gets. VH4 pedal get it.

      Sure though I would only use the EQ if necessary, boosting frequencies makes noise. Be careful.

  • @RPSchonherr
    @RPSchonherr 6 лет назад +1

    Some of those amp settings will also change depending on the pickups you are using. He uses a Gibson LP with the standard humbucking pickups. I can get the right sound on my Epi LP but if I go to my Wildkat which has P90 pickups I have to make some adjustments because they have single coil pickup with a semi hollow so it's a little lower tone. Then If I use my Washburn Tele style the single coils are very bright so I have to switch to the mid/neck pickups to get the same tone.

  • @liberty5565
    @liberty5565 5 лет назад +4

    I can cover Undertow to Lateralus using a Laney Lionheart, ESP Horizon, EQD Cloven Hoof, EQD Arrows boost, MXR Phase 90, Crybaby, MXR Carbon Copy, Tera Echo, and a Lovepedal Kalamazoo for lead.
    The mid boost pushes and cleans up the fuzz and sounds pretty Mesa-ish. Modern fuzz pedals are versatile as hell, plus it's fuzz and fuzz is awesome. Everyone should own at least a dozen fuzz pedals
    I prefer the Undertow tone, it's just raw. That beginning of Prison Sex is awesome. Cheapest way if your poor like me, buy a Lovepedal Super Lead or the Jubilee pedal and put it front of a Peavey. I run in through the clean channel and let the pedal do the work. The Peavey Valveking can get high gain, but needs help in the EQ. I use mine as a seat and beer/coffee table.

  • @minitzonthesun
    @minitzonthesun 8 лет назад

    His tone on Lateralus is delicious. 10,000 days is also really nice. I like to dial up the highs a little more than you but after i just tried with less, I think it sounds better, more "thumpy" for the quick hammer on type riffs. Good stuff man.

    sometimes i find that using a noise gate, especially in a small room setting, like when i practice in my bedroom/loft, is completely too much and unnecessary. sometimes that gain helps, but can be inappropriate and inconsistent with what i'm playing. and of course like you said, sometimes too much presence is just TOO MUCH.

    Great video and good call on the volume pedal. I read once that Adam ONLY uses the heavy channel. Even on tunes such as lateralus and right in two where it sounds damn close to clean. Also, on that note, I only had a small peavey solid state combo for a while. It would sound okay for the heavier stuff but rolling the volume back on the guitar sounded like crap. I switched to a mesa dual rec and the difference is outstanding. You really almost need a tube amp to get the right feel. Then, the "grunginess" is more dependent on how hard you pick. Very dynamic and the overall feel translates through a lot more.
    Keep up the good work man!

    The key to Adam's tone is the combination of multiple amps. A Marshall plexi + Diezel VH4 + various amps throughout the years. Effects-wise he's really a minimalist, delay + eq + wah + occasional modulation, that's really it.

    I dig your channel man allot, but it would be so much nicer to add in what's going on with the foot work with your camera, 20 year's of playing and i just discovered the wonder's n sound's you can make with just a volume pedal..
    Awsome video. i would be that guy at the bar pist off about an out of rhythm delay pedal ecspecial if it's in a TOOL song.

    I like your tutorials, but sad thing is to sound like Adam Jones, or to be even close to him you need the Les Paul Custom. After years of playing Tool songs I finally got myself a Silver Burst Les Paul Custom 1979, and realised most of his guitar tone comes from the guitar. Chuck in a Marshall vintage tube amp on max volume, and a stereo approach with running a smoother amp at the same time on a splitter, then you got Adam Jones.
    The key with Jones sound really is in the crunch of the Vintage Marshall Base head, and his Deizels in Stereo. You can pick up some nice amps like the Vox, or Ampeg VT22. Marshall 1974X Handwired 18W 1x12 Combo Amp (volume on 10) was something newer thet isn't too bad in price to replicate his bass amp sound.
    But Marshall is the key...
    Secondly Don't forget that when you play through amps that sound good in the bedroom, they get lost live. If you want that cut through Adam Jones tone live you need to spend on something Vintage Tube.

      First of all, I love your feedback, you're clearly in the know of Jones' rig. Unfortunately, imo, none of that is actually relevant to "sounding like Jones", unless your literally trying to copy his setup. This is more of a generic overview of how to dial in a hard rock tone to cover Tool and the effects you need. In no way is a basic rig setup going to compare to the monster rig of Jones but you don't need that to cover and play these songs. There are a TON of options that let you dial is a very, very usable tone. Your last point is spot on. There's a very big difference between a live sound and recording sound AND dialing in your tone in your room as compared to with a band! Thank you so much!

    • @gavinstorkey675
      @gavinstorkey675 6 лет назад

      Thanks mate, I see you point... The hard rock tone is special and not easy to accomplish especially in the early stages of learning about amps and sounds. Keep up the good work.

  • @chriskreutz1442

    His main amp is a Diezel VH4, which is high gain. But he blends with the Marshall Super Bass, and a Mesa Rectifier. But the blend makes it sound like a purr as you said. The entire blend can be achieved now using an Axe Fx 3 or amp sim Amplitube5, even Bias FX 2 with some DI EQ before the amp sim and after the output. Maybe some type of 1176 or 3A compressor after output depending on guitar/ amp settings used. Either way it’s way less than buying multiple amp heads/cabinets to replicate his or anyone else’s tone now a days.

    Any tips for keeping the low open D under control when doing droning riffs like the end of Invincible? It sounds really tight and articulate but also really heavy. When I try that riff with my tone the low D gets massively overpowering and fuzzy. I want the tone of the low string, but it's just too loud.

    Love your videos... I've learned a lot from your videos so I really appreciate it. I'm kind 9f a tone freak so right now I'm running a Gibson SG with a Marshall DSL40C which has a nice crunch mode and two distortion modes on the dirty channel. I run my SG into a dunlop volume x pedal then into a dunlop cry baby wah and from there I run a TC electronics compressor into the front of the amp. I run a TC electronics delay in the effects loop and all in all it sounds good but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get the most from the compressor. I love the sustain I get from it, but it sometimes feels like it's a little over the top... do you have any suggestions?

    • @axeofcreation
      @axeofcreation  7 лет назад

      I would do what you're doing. Use it as sustain not actual compression. Usually unnecessary with high gain sounds. Set it to where it catches the note but only really noticeable if you don't use it. Make sense?

    This would be great if coupled with Positive Grid and you'd just show everyone how you dialed it in there, share the signal patch and walk everyone through what you actually did to get that tone and how to use that to sculpt other styles.

    Volume pedal question:
    The fact that you can hear a lot of the distortion go away when the volume pedal is used sounds really nice but i've seen reviews of volume pedals where that doesn't seem to happen or be the desired effect. In fact i think Adam uses the ernie ball vl10 which seems to not react that way. But i want it to react that way! Should i get the ibanez vl10 or what?? Iv watched plenty volume pedal review vids but literally all of them are people doing ambient clean swells so i cant tell if they will give the desired effect when used with higher gain.

      I've noticed the same thing about most volume pedals. Oddly enough, that's the very volume pedal I have. I love it

    • @axeofcreation
      @axeofcreation  8 лет назад +1

      This wasn't a video on how to replicate Jones' rig, just the basics of what you need with whatever gear you have. The CC is a great analog delay which has a nice dark tone. I also like to stack delays, in this case running the CC into the (digital) Flashback. Great for carving out lead tones and rhythmic delays.

    • @ZorroTheWevile

      I would say anything that has double coil pickups. You can use a single coil if that's all you have and adjust gain or volume setting accordingly.

    • @ZorroTheWevile
      @ZorroTheWevile 7 лет назад

      The guitar is not really the main key to getting the tone but it is more or less a small contributing factor that changes the sound

    I know it's really late to comment on this video, but i'll give it a try.
    I am a beginner guitarist with low budget with a goal to play Tool and my question is: Do i need pedals or an amp is enough? I can't really afford one for now (i need an amp with an option to play on headphones since i live in a flat)
    Also i would be glad to hear soem propositions on what amp is good for 250$-300$ budget. Is Marshall MG30GFX with ESP LTD EC-256 or Schecter Demon6 good?

    • @ZorroTheWevile
      @ZorroTheWevile 3 года назад

      You should go with a boss katana mk 2 and an Epiphone Les Paul, the Les Paul is optional but it has a certain mid range that helps the tone but go with what you feel comfortable with because a Les Paul is not for everyone
