I know this video was like 3 months ago, but maybe this idea will help for next year. Make pickles out of your cucumbers. Sweet and dill pickles. Even sweet heat pickles! After they have pickled for a few months, use some to make sweet and dill relish.
Yeah, we had mixed success as we couldn't give it much time. Shame about the beans as they always did great for us. Well properly set up with a mix like you suggest!
Rob I would definitely change the blade. We have them like that at work same thing if they get wet and rusty the same thing happens so I just switch it out with another one ☘️☘️
Oh wow... Dunno how we missed this comment, it didn't come up on our list. Thanks anyway, dunno how it got rusty, maybe the wood was wet and it mixed with the sap but it is a pain in ass! 👍
Clare, have you tried diatomaceous earth powder. I'm not sure about Ireland, but it works well in Idaho, for a number of garden pests, especially squash bugs and potato beetles. I also use a dish soap solution for aphids, but add a bit of cooking oil for "sticking power". You two are amazing! I love your positive attitude and your ability to learn as you go. Thanks for sharing the process with us. 💖💖💖
The garden is looking so lovely!! I’m glad that you rehomed the cherry trees Clare😊💚 Framing upstairs is looking good Rob! Another really cool idea would be to put stone window shelves at the bottom of the windows? If they get wet it wouldn’t end up ruining them the way plasterboard would get ruined. 😁 It’s always a pleasure to see you guys! 😘💚💚
That's a lovely idea with the stone. We were thinking wood. Yes I think also if someone sat in the window the plasterboard would not hold up. Thank you for your comment as always 😊
Hi Claire My Dad use to grow fruit trees in our backyard and he always believed to let the grass grow around them. I don't know if he was right but they always bore heaps of fruit. He would mow little paths around them so we could play hide and seek. He also brewed his own beer under the house😊 one day we heard an explosion and ran down to see him coming out covered in beer.😂 Your garden looks great and I love your green house.
Wow, interesting. I keep saying I must go and clear the grass from around the trees in the orchard, but it still hasn't been done, perhaps I don't need to 😉
Claire if you can get your hands on some comfrey and put it in your barrel like grass clippings its a great nitrogen fixer, plant it once and it comes back every year.Maybe neem oil for the aphids. The tomatoes and cucumbers look beautiful 🙂💐
Form your trees, I'd recommend laying down some mulch around the trees. Even if it's just dirty old straw bales to lay out. We volunteered for some tree planting for our local commune (like a parish) here in France and straw was the favourite mulch.
The way I get rid of aphids on flowering plants is to use Dr Bonners Camping Soap and water. It makes them stuck, then blast them off with water. Camping Soap is biodegradable. On edibles, id use food safe soap. Not sure if you were dealing with slugs before, but for that you can get some ducks 😊
My Grandfather's favourite crop was young broad beans. Admittedly, he was a bit obsessional about the first crop. Broad beads are aphid magnets. Ants, as we know, will place aphids where best they can "Farm" them in exchange for the aphid "Honeydew" . My Grampy's chosen deterrent was a combo of very soapy water and Derris Dust administered via a hand pump spray device. That and his OCD checking the plants. - Keep going guys - Good vibes from here to there.
Claire, its likely iron deficiency that causes yellowing but first rule out too much water. I highly doubt that its nitrogen because they simply wouldn't grow xx
Broad beans notorious for blackfly, used to put all our rollups left overs in water and spray that on them, worked but gave up growing them in the end!!
Hi Rob. My husband (who is a joiner carpenter) says you can clean with thinners the rust areas and failing that the blade could be (his words) dull or blunt. ❤. Hope this helps
If you eat eggs, save the shells and soak in water. Makes a good fertilizer. Also... for future referance...when I was a kid, my neighbor who was an older lady, used milk on tomatoes.. it really made them grow. Not sure if it was expired/soured milk, but maybe you can look it up.
You’re making so much progress week to week. Those strawberries look delicious Clare. How are the bees? Rob I hope you feel better. You’re almost there. Take care ✌️💚
Hi Rob - well done on getting stuck in again upstairs; with all of those decisions to be made, it's no wonder you are exhausted. WRT insulating the bathroom, at 54:10, you mention, that you wouldnt be insulating one of the walls to allow the heat to move around, however I advise that you consider the impact on very important SOUND INSULATION. We have a bathroom, that was not properly insulated for sound & it we now need to retrofit to spare everyone's blushes. A costly mistake on our part.
Have been following you guys for about three months now and love the channel and you guys! Keep up the great work and a big hello from Adelaide, South Australia!😁😁😁👍👍👍❤❤❤
Keep up the good work, as hard as it is, it will be so worth it when it's finished and you can look around and feel so proud of yourselves at what you have achieved in creating a beautiful home ❤🇬🇧
hi there, there is a few things for the plants you can do that is pretty eco friendly but i will mention 2 things. first is to build like a barrier for the bugs, like a plank or something around the plants second is to plant things that Attract Beneficial Bugs like Ladybugs, hoverflies, parasitic wasps, lacewings and what not. here is a few plants that attract them (i google it so i may be wrong so you will need to look up what plants attract what yourself) there is a few more plants but this is what i found : cosmos, sweet alyssum, dill, yarrow oh btw one thing that could make rob more tired is all the things that is in the room whit rob, rob could try to have a "clean" work area and start whit one room and then make that one good then go to another room that you can "clean" up and then finish that one and so on. hope this helps a little.
Thank you yes I bought sweet alyssum for the tunnel, but that's a great idea to get some others for outside! Yes, I will go up and do a cleanup for Rob, he's not the best at cleaning up and prefers to crack on with the next job. Sometimes this works when short of time, but I agree that sometimes it really help to clean the space before moving on 😊
Claire, I try using some painter tape or duck tape if something stronger is needed to keep your bedroom dust free around the plastic. Opening some windows to suck the dust out away from the bedroom will help too hopefully, or a fan sucking it out of the area you’re working in. Just a thought! Great watch8ng you both as usual. Blessings for the upcoming week. M.
Hi Rob. A few saw tips: Firstly one type of blade is not a do everything solution you need a decent Ripping blade (fewer teeth per inch known as TPI) and a higher TPI blade for finer cutting. Secondly put some candle wax on the side of the blade and a little on the Fence. It isn't too difficult to sharpen a dulled blade with a file or even an angle grinder. Great video keep up the fantastic work.
Floating row covers should help with aphids, cabbage moths. Use earth staples to secure. I cover when I plant. Also, rhubarb are heavy feeders. I use just basic Miracle Grow.
I grow dwarf brod beans I cut of the tops of them when I'm happy with the height and before i have problems seemly it helps because they go for the tops of the beans. I've been do no dig and it doesn't make a difference.. I don't believe the washing up liquid doesn't effect other insects like ladybug, really it makes sense if you eat washing up liquid or an insects that is dose in it , it has to have a bad effect. Neem oil is also good. And is a natural product.
Take off the blade and soak it in simple green or a similar heavy duty cleaner for an hour or so . Then get a soft wire or nylon brush and brush off all the rust paying special attention to the teeth area . This should be a big improvement. Also when the board is about 4 or 5 foot through, stick a wooden wedge in the split between the two pieces and when you’re about 8 or 10 ft through, move the wedge back towards the blade again ….rinse and repeat
It is very important to use a primer paint, on the first coat, not how expensive the primer is, but very necessary to stop the bleeding into the sheetrock.
Yes sorry about that, when I'm outside the microphone faces away when I'm showing the garden and I forget that this makes my voice muffled. I will watch this in future, thank you 🙂
Phelim, there are the world of gaps and I have not filled them as I wanted to test how the first year went. They do provide good air flow actually to the plants at the moment, however in the Winter we may not be to impressed with the gaps 🙄
it's not the blade you must chim it up after the blade to widen the gap in the with of the sawblade ( the pressuere on the blade of the side is to big)
You need a Tactical Nettle Patch, the aphids will eat that before anything else...plus Nettle Tea and Nettle Fertilizer is the best....put them either at the end of each line or in a box close to the plants they love....
I know this video was like 3 months ago, but maybe this idea will help for next year.
Make pickles out of your cucumbers. Sweet and dill pickles. Even sweet heat pickles! After they have pickled for a few months, use some to make sweet and dill relish.
Thanks for the tip! My lovely neighbour did try some cucumber pickle, it was very tasty 😋
Hun we use the No Dig method and the beans came up very well last year. We use a 20/20/20 fertilizer. Also they grow well with Savory and onions.
Yeah, we had mixed success as we couldn't give it much time. Shame about the beans as they always did great for us. Well properly set up with a mix like you suggest!
If you crush up garlic, leave it in hot water overnight, drain and add it to the soapy water, it would be even more effective.
That's a new one! Will give it a go! Thanks
Re saw - I’ve seen people kill the wood with a bit if water to stop the friction burn with the blade on the wood
Interesting! Will check that one out. Never heard it before!
Rob I would definitely change the blade. We have them like that at work same thing if they get wet and rusty the same thing happens so I just switch it out with another one ☘️☘️

No I haven't 🤔 And your idea with the cooking oil is a good one, thank you so much for commenting 🙂
Broad beans seem to always get a black fly infestation. Soapy water spray definitely help, the best and safest solution.

Damned auto correct. It's supposed to be "Neem oil"
Ah yes I did hear of this, thank you 😁

We definitely need to mulch our trees, it's on the list ! Thanks 😊
You can grow plant that are green Fertilizer that puts goodness back to the land

We have had great success with simple dish soap and water in a sprayer , I even mist my house plants
Fantastic thank you ☺️

I actually think looking back now the plants were left too long in the pots before transplanting, thank you for your comment 🙂

pinch out the top of the plant = they are aphids - i used to live in west cork and grew bens
They were sacrificed to the Garden gods unfortunately. Didnt stay on top of maintenance. Wonderful place to live. Did you find somewhere nicer?
Have you tried to purchase and release ladybugs in your garden? I had to do this, this year and worked marvelously.
Great idea! I will look into this for next year 😊
