I'm increasingly viewing John's videos as my tri-weekly dose of Yoda-like teachings on life...
Keep it up, and DFTBA
John, as Dumbledore once said, "do not pity the dead Harry, pity the living."
Stuff that. Living is awesome!
Titus Pullo The living have to deal with really hard shit, too, though. The dead don't have to suffer, the living do.
That quote also omits Dumbledore's addendum: "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love."
I CANNOT CONTAIN MY LOVE FOR THIS MAN.
Nearly 3 years now, John! You should come back! There are so many nerdfighters here..
At 0:58 I thought he was gonna say "Look at all those chickens." Then I realized that this video was nearly 5 years old :(
I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING!! lol
This comment is now 5years old tine man
Every time I watch a vlogbrothers video, especially "thoughts from places", I feel more and more honored to be part of something larger than myself, something amazing, something powerful, something humbling, and something that becomes more and more thought provoking everyday. I am proud of who I am, who I've become, and how this community has shaped that.
you said this video is scary... i live in vienna and I never noticed there are so many stonebabys here...and it is very difficult to do to Uni without blinking!!
I always love John's Thoughts From Places the most, because everything he says can be quoted as an inspirational quote and I love it.
When my mom lived in Slovakia (what was then Czechaslovakia) her friends and her would juggle oranges to hitchhike to vienna
Another fantastic video. I thank you for that.
Whenever you do video's in this format, they always seem to turn out fantastically good.
I think Beijing has the world`s grayest skies
Only when you can see the sky.
These "Thoughts from Places" vlogs are by far my favorite series that you guys have done. I love seeing the places you go and the thoughts they inspire you with. It all just makes me want to travel more.
yeah, babies. WEEPING ANGEL BABIES!
Oh good, I'm not the only one thinking DON'T BLINK!
Supermarniela Whatever you do, DON'T BLINK!
+Christopher Johnson Blink and you're dead! They are FAST, faste4 then you can imagine!
he he he
I love the Thoughts from Places series. You guys have such wonderful things to say and you do it in such an eloquent way. It's really wonderful.
I also just really love catacombs...
Why is it that Viena always is a little closer to the death than other places?
what about salzburg though?
John, it's videos like this that remind me how amazing of an author you are. These "Thoughts from Places" videos make me love this channel so much more.
1:30- Male mich wie deine Französische Frauen.
This year I lost two of my relatives in one weekend: an uncle, who was the sweetest and most forgiving uncle to colon cancer, and my 21 year-old cousin in a motorcycle accident. This thanksgiving we had a melancholy feast . We lived through this magnificently prepared homecooked thanksgiving in remembrance of those we had lost, and because of my recently acquired knowledge of death, I think that's all the dead need: for us to remember them kindly, and to love them. All they need from us is love.
A dear friend of mine died 5 months ago. He was a bit of a thinker, a very caring person, overall one of the best people I've ever met, had and has a huge impact on me.
His philosophical motto was "Live life as if it were your own." Therefore I try to do that with him in mind. I owe him that.
Damn, you guys always end your Thoughts from Places videos with deep questions and emotions. I love it!
I will NEVER stop loving Thoughts From Places!!!
You guys are amazing.
I did a lot of traveling in college. Vienna was the last place I visited with one of my best travel buddies before graduation. Neither of us got to travel again after college, but we always talked about our memories and things we'd do "next time." She died in an accident this summer. We're only 25. I put off watching this video for a week because I felt like I couldn't enjoy remembering Vienna without her. How odd that I had to answer your question for myself BEFORE I could even watch the video!
John, I think your Thoughts from Places videos are my favorite videos of yours. They're funny, entertaining, and extremely thought-provoking. They almost always give me a new perspective on life. Oh, and I've never heard of William Kentridge, but I simply must look him up, because if John Green likes him, then he MUST be awesome.
Your videos always force me to see the world in a different light. Thank you.
Your videos always make me think about things I would usually take for granted. Thank you.
In my case, I eventually decided that I owed it to her to remember Vienna on my own. She was such a special person, and knowing her shaped who I am today. I also thought of her family, who I only met once (at the funeral). She always talked about them with pride. For their sake, my friends and I need to keep her memory bright. They remember her as a daughter and a sister, but we know her as a classmate and friend. The memory isn't complete without us. So, I watched and remembered Vienna and her.
Your videos always seem to make me laugh in the right places and pensive in the others. Great work, Brothers Green
I adore Thoughts from Places :) It's kind of like the best thing that's ever happened to RUclips.
I showed this video to my class of Anthro 101 students today and I just have to say that they loved it! Thank you so much for not forgetting to be awesome!
John you and your brother make the world smile soo much, John with your masery of the written word and Hank with musical. You both are immensly entertaining to watch and also poignant raising attention to pressing and important issues that face your life and ours Thank you both for being here.
Kentridge is one of my favorite artists as well. :) I was fortunate enough to hear him speak here in Detroit and he proposed one of the most profound questions/ideas I'd ever heard.
"What is one's relation to one's younger self? If you met in the street would you recognize each other? Would you feel embarrassed? When you look at an old photo of yourself you feel a sense of apology. You want to say 'I'm sorry. I was meant to be taking care of you, and I turned you into this'"
I love your Thoughts from Places videos so freakin' much. Never stop making them, 'kay?
Why John do your videos always leave me with a statement that gives me goosebumps?
WHY U SO GOOD AT WORDS?
John, you need to travel more. Because Thoughts from Places is pretty much always the best thing ever.
I love that every time I watch your video, I expect to laugh or learn something or both (which I nearly always do), but I'm always surprised how often you force me to think, whether it's about people or the world around us or just a deeper part of myself.
So yeah... Thanks.
Aaaahhhhhhh these are the BEST vlogbrothers videos! No question about it.
Please get yourself back to Vienna in spring or summer. Just about the friendliest city I've ever visited, certainly still the most important city in the world for we who still delight in the music of the Great Masters. Thanks for bringing back many memories even the greys of winter. Get back to show us the colour of summer.
Your "Thoughts From Places" videos are always so profound.
I love Thoughts from Places so much! I love the mixture of beautiful reflections and hilarious findings. Keep making them!
These travel videos are some of my very favorites.
On this day, 18 months ago my mom died of cancer. Up to that point, grieving was something vague. The death of a loved one leaves a gaping crushing void inside that is difficutl to describe accurately. But as John wrote "you can never love someone as much as you miss them". I haven't read truer words.
.
If anything is owed to them is to cherrish their memories. Only when forgotten are they truely gone.
Your videos "Thoughts frim places" always blow me away.
your thoughts from places videos are always my favorite.
These videos are so wonderful and thoughtful, yet humorous.
John, you need to do one of these videos for Barcelona.
This one from Vienna aroused so many little memories from my trip to Vienna when I was 5 that I had completely forgotten. Which I appreciate A LOT.
I love how your always so philosophical at the end of your videos like this
This is my favorite "Thoughts From Places" so far.
The fact that a person can leave a legacy and touch peoples lives in such a way is wonderful gift. I believe the thing we owe the dead is to live up to the legacies of the ones who mean most to us.
At the time that this video was made, I was studying in Vienna. In fact, my Uni was right off of Kaertnerstrasse, and I don't know if it was on the same day, but I have definitely stood in that crowd watching that very same dance team. At the time, I didn't know that the vlogbrothers / John Green existed, but the idea that I may have shared that moment in time and space with the same person whose vlogs have been setting wheels in my head spinning all month is pretty thought provoking and cool.
I live in Vienna, and enjoy your vlog. Nice to see the two come together!
Vienna looks like a gorgeous place to go to. Definitely in my top places to travel to now.
I truly love when you do this sort of video.
We honor the dead by remembering the things they've done, the good and the bad, accepting them for who they were, and how they lived.
Also we can honor them by living life to the fullest, celebrate life, we're following their footsteps, and also making a path for others later.
If they were close(relative/friend) by remembering the fun times you had with them, reminiscing with friends sometimes.
i could listen to you talk for hours, it's just so entertaining.
The two of you always ask the most thought provoking questions.
I really love these Thoughts from Places videos! Fantastic job!
Vienna is probably my favorite city and I really want to go back someday. I went there around this time when I was in 10th grade. It was so beautiful. I hope you got to go to the Christmas markets because they were so magical to me when I was there.
If I could give something to my ancestors before me, it would be to live as well and as passionately as I can, to enjoy as much of this world they left me as I can, to make the world a more beautiful place for those who will come after me, and to feel gratitude for the lives that gave me the chance to do so.
When you both make videos you inspire me to travel and view it in a new artistic way
I studied in Wien. This video made me so nostalgic. I miss the christmas markets! thanks john!
baby, baby, baby, baby, rotating Mozart head, baby, baby...
ALL of his videos are so beautifully poetic.
Oh my God, John, you just moved me to tears!
Another marvellous "thoughts from places"... Love them
John, please keep traveling, recording and thinking, and then do a thoughts-voice-over to the recordings, I love it!
We owe the dead rememberance, but not just for them but for ourselves also. It is painful to give up our memories of our loved ones, and I don't think that any one wants to be forgotten
With every video you and Hank make.. I feel my nerdfighter spirit grow.
I studied in Vienna for a while and you are making me so home sick. I miss it so very much.
I'm loving these thoughts from places; as for what we owe the dead, we owe them our history and culture. Our cites and cathedrals are built upon the lives, mistakes, loves, and successes of millions of people, ones who are as human as we are today. They buried their dead, just as we do today, giving a little thanks for the things that the deceased contributed to society.
I FRIGGIN LOVE VIENNA! I've been there once (or twice, depending on how you count it - one and a half times), and I miss it so much!!
I just thought my mother-in-law last week, so I can tell you from my experience, memories of the dead are more haunting than the stench at church. I don't go to church... I could avoid the smell, but memories are unpredictable and strike without warning.
As for honoring, we buried her next to her husband. The guy she loved more than anything and was never the same for the 16 years she lived past his death. I'm very glad she did for I love the son she raised just as much as she loved her husband
@gdespain I lost my father at 19 and am now 22. I would completely agree with you that all we can do is live our lives in the way we believe they'd approve of. And do all of this with strength, courage, and of course... resilience.
Stay strong.
i'm from vienna and it's so weird watching john seeing all this places that i see everyday
I love how John (and Hank) start off their videos being so fun and goofy and then become really serious and thoughtful at the end, but that's what I love about them.
I love how all the thoughts from places go from hilariously funny to really thoughtful in about 2 minutes.
When John goes on tour, it reminds me how much I'd like to travel to different countries. I want to be able to compare gray skies.
I looooooooooove when you do "Thoughts from Places". Inspiring :)
literally the best cafe ive ever been to in my entire life is right across the street from st.stephens and i was trying to see it while watchin the bboys dance and just have my mouth water from the greatness of it all.
I hope it's still around by the time I go and check it out. If you have the name of it and you're still around, it would be very helpful in case they've moved locations or something (or better yet, they're now in multiple locations).
Dear Vienna....
You have no idea how much you made me miss Germany, even though this is Austria. They look so similar to me. I loved this thoughts from places more than I have any other and I really don't understand why. They are all great, this one was just especially amazing to me.

I know I'm not John, but I hope this helps! :)
you and hank are so deep. i love watching your thoughts from places because A) i love watching travel videos about place me and my family are too poor to go and B) to hear your special, life changing (well..sorta xD) messages at the end.
after these videos i always have to pause and think because they're almost overwhelming. I like it.
That rotating Mozart head is the logo for a chocolate company that makes these wonderful little treats called Mozartkuchen. I actually had to a project on Autstrian food this year in German class, and my German teacher (who is from Austria) brought in some actual Mozartkuchen to try.
They're the most delicious things in the world. If you ever go back John (or any nerdfighters reading this comment go to Vienna), you must try some.
I love this dude's vlogs! They are just too awesome!!!!
My first memory is of visiting my great grandmother's grave. My parents made up a shrine complete with her favorite sweets and soju ,a kind of rice alcohol. Then they did several very deep bows (seriously, their foreheads were touching the ground). Afterwards, they sprinkled the soju over her grave and stuck a lit cigarette in the ground. I remember thinking, death can't be so bad if there are people who remember what your favorite cigarettes and sweets are.
If you like Vienna, you'd love Prague. I visited both those cities on a trip with my choir and Old Town of Prague was probably my favorite place. You can have many philosophical thoughts about the astronomical clock there, I guarantee it.
I love the little bit of philosophy at the end of every "Thoughts from Places" video!
john, you make travel seem even more incredible than I already know it to be.
I love it when I see somewhere I recognise on these videos and living in England it's not common. Vienna is probably my favourite city in the world and I love the Stephansdom catacombs! Wish you guys would come to England soon!
This video made me miss my trip to Vienna. Then I realised I also saw the William Kentridge exhibition, (although my camera was not kidnapped), which made me realise I was there around when you were there. Which made me sad, but ultimately made me realise our spectacular bond, that only we share...
...I also was confused by the rotating Mozart head.
We owe them respect and nothing less nor more. They worked to shape our world, for better or for worse which, despite anything else, is admirable.
"What, if anything, do we owe the dead.... Hank, I'll see you tomorrow!"
I have finished the entirety of Vlogbrothers and now I'm just going back and watching them over again because I feel so lost without that friendly and understanding presence of John and Hank. I have felt myself become more pleased with who I am as a person, but also acutely aware of how judgmental the rest of the world is. Lord. You've ruined me for normalcy, Green brothers.
I love Hanks Thoughts From Places, he makes them sound so deep
I love these Thoughts from Places videos. Every time I see one in my subscription box, I squeal. ^_^
I think we owe the dead rememberance. And to remember our loved ones with a smile. My friend told me the other day about my friend who died in april 'you're not saying goodbye, you're saying see you later' - I'm not religious and don't really believe in an afterlife, but this is comforting :) she also said 'try your best to move on with your life and leave that little space in your heart for her, forever.' which is what I think we owe the dead. (she's italian so sorry for the bad grammar :3) :)
We owe them not to forget. I remember something you said one time about how most celebrities now-a-days will not be remembered in 100 years because they did not contribute drasically to our society. In the same video, you said that if you want to be remembered and cherished you have to impact someones life, and I remember you said being a spectacular english teacher that your students wil tell their children about, is someone who will be remembered. Thats what we owe. man that was deep...
My first and favorite vlogbrothers video.
Mr. Green, there are very few people on Earth I respect as much as you.
You are so poetic. It wasn't until TFP started that I began to see the connection between john green and john green's books.
