Thanks for sharing! A really good review and overview, but yeah, your's is as subjective as mine. Here is my take:
You are simply too good a gamer and a lot of you valid critique comes from the perspective of well, a very experienced gamer. I am not. When it comes to gaming I'm even a sub-average Joe. The last and only games I ever finished were stuff like Layers of Fear, What Remains of Edith Finch. Story-driven walking sims you could say.
The last time I played a shooter was more than 20 years ago as a student. I also never played a shooter with a gamepad - and I never thought I could (I tried a couple hours with the likes of Wolfenstein, etc).
As a result it took me 89 (!) runs to beat Phrike (boss in the first Returnal biome) and 193 until I beat Ophion (6th and last boss) the first time.
So I not only spent way more time in the game, I also looked up a lot of stuff on the web like weapons' traits and mechanics.
Returnal to me was a really big challenge, a grind and as a direct result it was so immensely rewarding to beat a boss (two of which I beat at first sight), level up and have a long good run, learn from each and every run, from my choices, from my mishaps. I had to adapt my style and tactics to the biomes, the enemys, the weapons, the augmentations and traits.
I really bonded with this game and to me it is close to perfect. A masterpiece. I did not beat the game, I just played it, it grew on my and I grew with it as a player.
I wish Returnal was a more successful title because Housemarque deserves all praise and success for it. They made very bold choices in their design which could easily have backfired and that is something most games lack. I hope they stay the course. :-)

The game is certainly a "gamer's game". Certainly some expectations on experience. I could not imagine my girlfriend attempting this game. I also hope it is a successful title! Not sure what the sales are, but I think for a while it was one of very few true PS5 exclusives. Certainly a good thing the game got out early into the PS5. I have a lot of respect for Housemarque as a studio though!

Your experience with this game, 15 deaths, is incredibly uncommon. Just look at the stats for trophies after defeating each boss. Last I checked, just Act 1 has less than 25% completion. So you're just humble bragging, no offense meant...literally, you didn't know how good you are at Returnal compared to the majority of players. And this is 2 years on with MANY buffs, nerfs, RNG boosts (like getting the Astronaut Figurine), suspend run feature (allowing scum saves with ps+), and mini-map now shows items, enemies, etc.

Nice review 🙂 so can I get this through Gamepass? This review was way longer than the Halo infinite review 😳 and what happened to your people?

It is PS5 only at the moment. I really didn't plan on it being 30 minutes I thought it would be shorter haha! The people are around. We play Halo every week at the moment. I always did the planning, editing, uploading etc. so it was always my project at the core. They lost interest after 5 years which is totally reasonable. Hopefully one or all of them make occasional appearances. I made a video explaining why I am slowing down the content output. Basically shifting to making what I want instead of what the algorithm wants to prevent burnout, so for a while high quality reviews.
