2024 Why I Love Elden Ring

- Elden Ring. This game has taken over my life since I played it for the first time in 2023. I kept asking myself why, and finally I settled on the reason. I love Elden Ring because of its scope and the trust that From Software puts on its players.

I love your point about the DLC's difficulty being narratively important to communicate the danger of the land of shadow. Hadn't thought about it in those terms, but was immediately sold on it when I hit the first curseblade 5 minutes in and couldn't stop laughing at how intense it was
Really enjoyed your take! As someone who’s appreciated these FromSoftware games the last twelve years, it’s interesting to see what the new generation gets out of it. It’s also added a level of social accountability to the Get Gud crowd that has been needed.
I thought you explained the helplessness and insignificance these games work hard to create very well. “Power scope” really invokes that intention.
The trust part is, I think, is something I hear discussed, but not in the way you describe. The trust is there bx of the world they present. Trust is earned, and in a one person video game, that trust needs to be earned fairly constantly. Those walk out moments are them asking us to trust them, our journey to those places is where they earn our trust. With its beauty, variety, and flexible challenge. We get to immerse ourselves in whatever path we choose.
I bought Elden Ring on launch day as a Fromsoft noob. I was in the same boat, it consumed my free time. I was thinking about it at work and watching videos on breaks. I still find it hard to play other games now. I always go back to Elden Ring. I just love running around exploring and fighting uninterrupted for hours.
I really hate how I love Elden Ring. The game is hard but you can approach every fight in a more ways than you could imagine compare to other games.
