Henry is simply the best , no arguments.
for sure, Go Henry Catchpole!!
Absolutely!
Top 2 of the Top tier auto journalists in no specific order. I'm pretty sure a solid case should be made for Chris Harris as well.
Right! Feels like I nearly did a test drive of the car

You are a wonderful presenter, Henry. Great video as always.
Shame that VAG are ditching the physical buttons for the haptic and touch nonsense.
Perhaps it cost less to make?
Have you actually used them? They’re as bad as you’d expect. Haven’t seen a single review that likes them but all these companies are trying to push it. They’re awful
@@philipc239 It does indeed cost less to manufacture, but this isn't a Toyota Corolla. If they can ask fifty thousand pounds, I don't really want much cost-saving in the interior.
@@juliantaffa4089 totally agree with you. All i was trying to say was it cost less to make, but would then be able to charge the customers more for giving them "tech".. i shouldn't leave the last part out 😁 or in order word they're just cheap
Beside, some people might a diehard vw fans maybe but i would definitely not choose this over an M2 Comp. Even if it's a base M2 with zero options whatsoever..
Yup, I'll be buying the previous gen because of that.
"I do like that a crap of rich exhaust"
God I love subtitles 😂😂
because the exhaust is so expensive haha
Some of the 'crackle pop' tunes the young lads love so much sound like a rich crap.
VW has to work hard on improving their infotainment system. All reviewers are complaining about that. Hopefully VW got the messages for the next update.
It’s just so surprising how many manufacturers make the same mistakes. Cadillac had an all-haptic interface years ago and it was universally loathed. Honda ditched physical knobs and buttons, everyone blasted them for it, and they capitulated. I cannot fathom why they would try again to execute what never works.
@footballcoreano as someone with a Mk7 GTI, I can tell you this Mk8 system is a step back. Sure, the software may be a step forward, but the reliance on all touch inputs is a massive step back.
I don’t think it’s anything like as bad as many reviewers are making out. Henry’s view of it is correct, it’s not perfect but not bad either.
@@andrewmontague2636 no its bad, you have to go through so many menus for the simplest of functions, and the capacitive touch buttons are a chore to use.
Just put an IPAD on the dash 😎
Great review, Henry, as usual. 👍🏻 I wish these manufacturers would drop the absurd menu touch screens, they have no place in a performance car...
Mercedes would put the brake magic button where the steering wheel heat button is … you know just because!! Great review as always!! I still prefer the GTI!!
The heated steering wheel isn’t part of the winter pack. It’s standard. The winter pack on the options list is misleading because it makes out like it adds the heated steering wheel.
It's just a way to introduce the options talk part of the video. They probably didn't look it up at all.
I don't know what you do to the sound, but the soft, relaxing smooth edges on the highs just work. And no over the top "exicted" shouting and acting, intrusive loud contrasting everything. It's just relaxing to watch.
ESP Off can be set up as a shortcut. Akrapovic actually doesn’t add much, standard exhaust snaps crackles and pops in the racier settings. Oh and the heated wheel is standard.
Great vid though! Really thorough review, beautifully shot too!
Agreed! Though a catless downpipe with the stock exhaust would be my pick (with a set of different tips) and/or another catback for much less money.
Let me try to translate - Henry: "I don't really care for it at this price"
Hawaiian Pizza blends the savoury and sweet in a way that most foods could only dream of Mr Catchpole
We don’t have Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii. Lol
@@mmadchef808 It was invented in Canada lol.
@@Skrenja That’s hilarious…learn something new every day!!
@@mmadchef808 I was born in England and England is not known for it's cuisine, with dishes like bangers and mash, or bubbles and squeak, these don't sound good. The only thing I can think of in the way of English cuisine that's good is Fish and Chips.
It’s an abomination
For all its power and handling, the deal breakers for me are the touch-sensitive controls. You can never truly keep your eyes on the road.
When the engine is hot, you click on the R button on the steering wheel and put it in Race. That's all you need. What else would you need if you go on a B road drive? In my mk 7, I do the same, except, I don't have an R button, so I have to look down, click on the drive mode button and select Race. So it's actually more distracting on the mk 7. Only wished there was a button for ESC off.
@@HotHatchTV And if you're hot and want to adjust the AC, you get to fiddle with touchscreen menus and crappy touch sliders.
@@burddog0792 I hardly ever adjust the AC, I set it to 21 and leave it at this. Or just talk to the car to adjust it for you. Who needs fiddling when you got other options. I agree, the touch sliders are crap, but as I mentioned, they can be avoided. It's like reviewers complaining about no physical volume button in the center console. Who still uses that? I think in the last 10-15 years, in all my different cars, I hardly ever used it, because you can adjust it on the steering wheel. Why take your hand of the wheel to fiddle with a physical or touch button in the center console, when you fingers are already next to it??
Same as every other sports sedan rn.
I refuse to upgrade my golf r because the touch controls are horrendous
Best RUclips automotive channel out there, without question.
All those touch sensitive interior controls are deal breakers.
The R at this price is a hard bill to swallow. The GTI makes sense, the R, not so much
Brilliant as always Henry well done!!!!
I've never seen a Golf R driven sensibly, always driven like the owner is an arsehole, hence calling them Golf Rsholes. Then again, I do live near Bradford, so... take what you want from that 😅
What's a little speeding ticket to a drug dealer? I'm not saying everyone who lives in Bradford is a drug dealer... There are also plenty of drug users too! 😆
Golf Arsehole lol sometimes I wish lived over there for that great slang
Henry on Hawaiian Pizza: "Clearly wrong."
whelp, there goes my near-decade-long subscription
(j/k, loved the review as always)
We don’t want your kind here anyways👽
Brits have horrible food and palettes so it's to be expected he doesn't appreciate Hawaiian pizza. LOL
👋👋👋
what a labor of love these videos are! makes me almost emotional
The car it’s just beautiful, i watched the video kind of nostalgic knowing that’s one of the last Golfs to be ever made . It’s hard to see other reviews other than Henry’s .
What do you mean by “one of the last golfs to be ever made”?!
@@tacodias With all the new regulations pushed by the EU/greens/leftists there's a chance there won't be a golf 9. The 8 facelift will probably come late 2023 and that could be it.
plausible indeed 😢
Best car reviews on RUclips right here. Always have time for Henry / Carfection 👌🏻
It'll be interesting to see what lease deals come through. Of the one's I've seen, they have always been for the base model, and it costs a lot to add options. Also fingers crossed the Mk8.5 will offer a manual and revert to physical switches, then we might upgrade from our MK 7
You can hope, but I'd be amazed to see a manual return...
I prefer a manual gearbox.
Far more enjoyable.
Manual wasn’t too successful on Mk7. Lots of clutch failures caused by it not being able to handle the torque..
@@layne4376 Maybe…! I’m not sure tbh
Just use some money to stage 1 tune the mark 7.
Lovely review as always, but I was awaiting the ESP off mention. You can add it as a shortcut to the pull-down tray on the screen (à la smartphone notification tray) and once you do that, it's a literal single tap of the screen for the rest of time.
Brilliant as always, Henry
Great video, definitely a proper review. I always enjoy coming across your videos.
wow, what a beautiful video. So nicely shot.
Henry Catchpole simply the best
car reviewer on YT 👌 .
Being a GTI/Golf R fan for 20 years now, I really dig this car's chassis and even the styling is growing on me after falling flat at the Mk8's launch. The lack of a manual is a shame; the Golf's manual isn't the best but it's decent enough to be fun, and DSGs just suck a lot of enjoyment out of a car I feel. The interior touch capacitive buttons are the biggest deal breaker. Mk7s are tough to beat, especially for those of us in North America who don't get most of Europe/UK's choices in the hatch segment.
"The crap of rich exhaust." Love the subtitles.
Fair play to whoever shot and edited this, it's absolutely stunning
Henry catchpole, you're definitely one of the best guys out there reviewing cars. Great job 👍
Superb video, that car on the B4560 👌🏻
I own a Golf, my third, and if I did have £50k to spend on a car, I wouldn't own a Golf. That's ludicrous money.
To be fair @Henry Catchpole, the Merc and BM are £50k before options and will be nearer 60k with a spec that’s actually resellable when you’ve done with it
They have nice interiors though. Still a lot of money but at least the dashboard doesnt like like the packaging for some cheap chocolate selection box
To be fair, the Merc and BMW are better at baseline than the Golf R is fully spec’d.
@@mmmmm4815 maybe but base spec BM’s and Mercs are like rocking horse shit, as no dealer wants a base model in their used stock unless it’s dirt cheap
Henry must be protected. I love his videos.
I heard we are getting a manual version here in the States.
Yeah and apparently it’s tuned for our roads o_O
fantastic vidoe! thank you very much for this. I just wonder how well equipped and crazily priced our version of the Golf R will be...
The new Golf R is more interactive and engaging. Kind of like when Henry puts his glasses on, he suddenly seems more interactive, and engaging.
Another good video, thanks. Only complaint is the repeats of the same shots of the car driving past.
Any idea when you will be reviewing the new one?!😊
It is safe to say that Henry Catchpole is the benchmark for motoring journalists around the globe.
Test drove one of these recently and yes it has all the toys and was rapid but give me little Fiesta ST for our little B roads any day of the week ! That car was crazy fun
Such a great presenter!!! I feel totally chilled out now after a sh@t day! BTW the Golf R is rather lovely 👌
Finally. Was really waiting for this one! Thank you and, as always, great job! So… now the question is: would you daily drive the Golf R or the Gr Yaris?
GR Yaris
Also it's a Toyota so oil change is pretty much all you need the entire ownership
If you want any sort of practicality, you have your answer..
@@philipc239 I love it when a product that hasn’t had enough real world testing automatically is called “reliable” by fanboys just because of a manufacturer name...
@@mmmmm4815 😂😂😂love the way you take things so personally. It's ok you don't have to agree with anything. Just stick to your Golf then.. "fanboy" 😁😁😁 thanks for cracking me up that really light up my day 👍👍👍😊
Oh just so u know I don't even like Toyotas hahaha
@@philipc239 who said I was a Golf fanboy? Thanks for cracking me up that really light my day haha
Well I guess according to your logic then, every brand new car is reliable, because they haven’t had any problems yet lol.
Answer me this: Of Toyota’s or Lexus’s are so reliable, why are so many of them at the service areas at dealerships?
To say Toyota’s or Lexus’s are “more” reliable would be accurate, but to just say a car is reliable just because it has a Toyota or Lexus badge is very very laughable, as that would insinuate that NONE of them in existence have ever had issues. That insinuation is 100% false 👍
Those beauty shots towards the end (@9:56) are just * chef's kiss *!
the review I’ve been waiting for by the reviewer I’ve been waiting for
I hope the US version will come with the Nurburgring mode in the Performance package. We are sure to have some options stripped off (Akrapovic exhaust probably). Though we are getting a manual and that's not an option for the Euro-spec coincidentally.
5:15 - Buttons! (Edit - nicely pointed out, love the attention to detail!)
Oh yes, and why is the Akrapovic option so pricey as you’d be getting the standard exhaust in any case but the cost of the standard exhaust isn’t being deducted from the difference, in other words massive rip off. You’d probably be better off buying the Akrapovic after market and selling the new standard exhaust to an enthusiastic previous model Golf owner who wants to upgrade and get some money back.
I don’t understand why people want to haul an unnecessary 18stone load around with them when 95% of the year it isn’t doing anything.
I completely agree on your comments re the exhaust, if it was fitted on the line and not in dealer, it would cost considerably less.
I’ve been lucky to drive both GTI Clubsport and R. R does feel a lot more car for the 5% or so extra it costs. IMO, the Clubsport’s 300bhp is just a bit too much for a fwd car of this size, the power in the R is much more exploitable
@@andrewmontague2636 thanks Andrew
Without the Golf R Performance VIN you have zero chance of buying the Akrapovic after market through VW.
@@randallbezuidenhout3299 thanks, have to look at other after market exhausts then?
This is the first Golf R that I have no interest in owning. Those capacitive touch controls are a nuisance. And the droopy, sad-eyed front-end doesn't look nearly as good as the previous model.
Nice review Henry, dream car of mine!!! I have an ID3 and the software is now on par with the Golf's but I do agree the steering wheel controls are stupid and pointless!!!!! (also big thumbs up for pronouncing Akrapovic correctly!!!!)
Awesome review! I am enjoying my MK7.5 GTI 6 speed. Love the R's.
Catchpole has come into another league.. for me he is the best right now. Harris use to be the best, now he is number two... and its all because of top gear... he should be on youtube.
Drop the location you filmed these videos man! Location is stunning!
Great review Henry 👏
Why don't you test the 0-60 also ?
Great video, great car (although the BMW M135i's interior is miles better). But it's hardly in the M2/A45 price range, is it? Even recent used examples of those are at least 10k more than a Golf R (in Europe, at least)
very informative review mate as here in South Africa wait for this machine. Apparently, VW South Africa is affected by a sudden shortage of chips for them to start launching and selling GTI and R here on this side of the planet. Anyway, my favorite is always M135i xdrive
Lmao I’m so American I’m like why was he walking to the passenger seat 😂
Okay, hear me out: a new motoring show called Henry, Harry and Harris.
Amen!
Yes please
Genius
"Triple H Show"
Agreed! Have any of them appeared in a video together....ever? I know Harry was in a Collecting Cars podcast episode with Harris but I've not seen any other examples.
No 3 pedal? We've heard that we're supposed to be getting it with a manual here in the US.
VW North America (both USA and Canada) has confirmed that the Golf R will indeed be available with a choice of manual or DSG. I presume both options would also be offered in Europe. Does anyone know if this is correct?
@@johnsvariety it wouldn't be the first time that the North American market was exclusive for a 3 pedal variant of a cool car. See E60 M5.
Great review!!!
He knows his stuff
Tunability is also a part of the cars popularity. EA888 is capable of 500WHP on a stock block.
Great review
Nothing will ever top the intro to that club sport video. 😢🤭
Fantastic review as always Henry , the mk7 & mk7.5 Golf are beautiful machines - this new Golf R is just a little too boring ...
They are more boring to drive though

Henry would be great in a blockbuster film
Well if your only complaint is the sensitive touch controls. Good, we will have more availability for us.
Just brilliant review of an icon 👍
I want one! Lov it! However, only three colors! No Red ♥️
Are they making it in Manual????????
This guy Henry. Got to be the face of the new Top Gear. Surely. Calmness personified. Never flustered either. A true professional. No question!
i dont know, sounds like your very good at reading the tech and specs sheets. did you even time the 0-100 sprint? because its not 4.7 secs, its alot faster.
The perfect affordable, practical sportscar. It does simply not get any better.
Insane Vid
I'm tired of Golf but I enjoyed the review
In an age where we all use touchscreen phones I understand why auto designers think we all want that in our cars but I DONT. I want buttons for that clicking sound and confirmation I pushed it. Capacitive buttons seem a bit unsafe where some of us might have to take our eyes off the road a second time to confirm if we pressed it
Where did you shoot this video ? I really want to drive my car there
Real question....Did you cameraguy drive it, and is he going to upgrade after doing so?
I’d like to know at what stage the awd or torque vectoring come into play, I get the impression from this video that it’s there at fairly ordinary speeds but I have difficulty believing that to be the case as the LSD in the standard Gti can haul the car round corners at more than excessive speeds without awd, so why the need for awd unless you’re in Scandinavia, North America or Siberia?
The FWD MQB wheel hop like crazy when pulling away from standstill or in low gears with even the slightest hint of throttle.
@@Y333HJMS You’re exaggerating there
Things have changed a lot since 2004 here in America & Volkswagen performance hatchbacks. List of options used to be: What color do you want? Cloth or Leather? Ok, here you go.
VW has made this model far too expensive for their target buyers. Most people who want this car won't be able to afford it. I wouldn't pay for one, I'd rather own an Alfa Romeo.
Agreed but, as Henry mentions, as a lease deal, the youngsters desperate to up their street cred ratings at any cost..much like having to have the latest iphone every time...they will find a way and no doubt be in debt for years, moan that they aren't on the property ladder and be on anti-depressants when the depreciation catches up with them but by God will they love those first six months of getting laid more! 🙄😆
@@Monkey80llx I can't argue with your reflections here. I'd have to agree. But all the women I come in contact with say my Alfa Romeo Giulia is the most beautiful car they've ever seen. ha ha You can find a Golf, GTI, R36, or R model on just about every street corner in California. But only a very few Alfa Romeos are driving around. That's a good thing for us folks who own one.
There is a 6 month waiting list atm..
@@andrewmontague2636 That's great news for VW. I'm sure they could have sold even more, had it been priced accordingly. Many car makers are reducing production and increasing prices. They can make even more money by cutting production and increasing prices. Supply and demand issues being created.
The target audience seem to love finance - the cost won't stop them at all, it just won't be good for them.
Love the fact that when Henry reviews a car he doesn't spend 75% of the video telling us about rubbish that has nothing to do with the driving experience (such as the lack of rear legroom and other such nonsense).
Since you are rarely racing someone up a twisty mountain road, things like legroom are actually hugely important. My partner has a 2019 R and it’s quite uncomfortable to sit in unless you are a goblin
Lovely car
Thank you Henry 👍🏻
Don't forget the pan roof option and if you'd prefer leather it is 50k which is right on the money of the Merc a45s.
For me, if I'm prepared to spend 50k on a premium hot hatch I want a top badge on the bonnet and a better interior than that in the Golf R, also in the a45s the added bonus of more power.
Question is, why would i buy the Golf r
beautiful film....
No more standard transmission?
How can they charge for a rear view camera as an option. Its mandatory on new vehicles in US (and therefore Canada also).
Can that steering wheel heater thing be fixed somehow or no?
Any mention of the recent vast recall for electrical gremlins?
Don't mention the war!
You guys drink vodka like absolute champs. Even russians don't drink it straight up without chasing it.
Yes, House MD was an amazing series.
Top Gear lives on… ❤
Everything looks to be the perfect all rounder....until the price and the dangerous touchscreen are mentioned.
And some folks in the older ones driving down the road and the lane assist deciding to ram on the breaks cos it think you should be doing 40 instead of 70 😕
how is the road noise in the cabin?
You are on your way to becoming a national treasure yourself Henry :)
I've had 7.5 VW Golf R Estate for 4 years. It's an outstanding all rounder - Carries tons of dive gear easily, lopes along the motorway with ease delivering 40MPG and can rip up an A- or B-road when the fancy takes you. BUT... It's not a car I will ever grow to love - It's a supremely capable, but rather sterile car - My old Mazda RX-8 was a troublesome beast, but was a pleasure just to sit in, let alone drive along a twisty road, working that rifle-bolt gear change. Even my Mk1 Octavia vRS was more engagaing and, ultimately, enjoyable.
I wouldn't though spend nigh on 50 grand for a 'better' Golf R... Either accept the compromises of the bog standard car for all round day to day practicality or buy a more enjoyable driving machine for £50,000.
I know what you mean I went from an abarth 500 to a golf R and the golf though a much better car in every way was just too easy. The abarth was pretty crap but always made me smile like an idiot
For those on winter or rainy climates, power on four although easier to drive, will be the logical choice.
Great review Harry. Those steering wheel and infotainment quibbles are enough for me to wait and see if VW fine tunes for the mid-cycle refresh. Will hold onto my Mk7.5 for a bit longer though I agree driving engagement leaves something to be desired.
Who’s Harry?
