'Hello Andrew, RUclips here.' 🤣🤣
Look out!!! She's getting older, better, and developing her own style. This girl is for real
Oh for sure. She’s awesome
In my opinion she's by far the best young drummer in the world and getting very close to being one of the best period. Most drummers in general only play one type of music well, she plays several types on a very high level.
She just keeps getting better and better. I don't even know how that's possible at this stage. She's already incredible.
Still very young
Yoyoka seemed to handle this challenging drum song with ease. She continues to amaze.
This is a hard song!!!
Amazing
Pat Torpey, probably the most underrated drummer ever. Sadly passed away in 2018. You should do some reactions to his old videos. He was an incredible player and my favorite drummer of all time. He needs the recognition he deserves.
That’s a hell of a drum part. Can’t wait to check him out 👀
Here’s Yoyoka in an online collab with Billy Sheehan of MrBig(& many of Mike Portnoy’s bands), covering another MrBig song (more pop, not metal), a deceptively simple Pat Torpey beat that was praised by Neil Peart for being original
Take Cover (Mr. Big) - Yoyoka & friends, when she was age 10 I believe (she turns 14 years old on Oct 12, 2023)

@@AndrewRooneyDrums The whole band was made up of crazy good musicians. Here is a video where Pat Torpey and Billy Sheehan - the bass player - play the song drums and bass only. ruclips.net/video/5qghBxNPHl0/видео.html
Here's one of Pat's instruction videos ruclips.net/video/loFvhGTbOD8/видео.html
Mr. Big was such a great band.
Check out "Fool Us Today" from the Live at Budokan. You wont regret it@@AndrewRooneyDrums
My all time favourite drummer, RIP.
Next Level is the drummer who actually played the song, Pat Torpey.
Can’t wait to check him out 👀
The changes from the loud parts to the Rim shots... totally controlled and even! Wow!!!
Worst, or best, part is that she's not even trying. This is completely effortless, she's just playing, goofing around and being silly. Incredible talent.
Yeah, she seems to be doing some things just to make it more challenging, like not looking at the symbol at 4:25
I agree. Yoyoka is like that. It's amazing and unusual. I've seen her play in person. It is even MORE OBVIOUS when you see it for yourself, 1st hand. It is something that struck me about her, how effortless her playing is. It's like the hand of God came down and touched her with his drumsticks, the same way God came down & gave Stravinsky "Le Sacre du Printemps." Stravinsky was so puzzled by his authorship of the work that he claimed he didn't write it, that the hand of God came down and wrote Le Sacre THROUGH Stravinsky. He was merely the mechanism that put the piece down on paper. I am NOT belittling Yoyoka's continued efforts in any way. I know a lot of hard work has gone into her incredible accomplishments. I am only commenting to whole-heartedly AGREE with you, and that this ability is even MORE obvious if you watch her in person and can see in detail how she moves, to the point that it is one of the things I find MOST striking about. Sure, she's a great drummer. The world has many. She's even better at 14. Not so many 14 year olds can play what she does (any? dunno). That she can play what she plays AND the way she plays it is so unusual that I'm sure her fame is inevitable. As near as I can tell, and I do not know EVERY drummer on the planet, she has NO peer. I've looked at a lot of others people have claimed were just "as good" as she is. So far what they've lacked is that effortlessness that defines true greatness.
@salvadormonella8953 there are other drummers, much older and much more skilled, than Yoyoka. And when I watch them I can clearly see what she may become. Just watched an incredible solo by Chris Coleman. Astounding! Much better than anything Yoyoka has so far done. BUT I have every expectation she can get there. She is destined for greatness. And as you say not sure she has a peer at her same age. Excellent musician!
BTW Chris Coleman is her favorite drummer.
@@chrisegbertky Drummers are magic. I haven't watched Chris Coleman specifically, that I know of (I might have, I'll have to pay more attention), but I agree there are drummers that make excellent drummers look like amateurs. Other level drummers. While Yoyoka may not be that next level above the next level drummer now, I've seen her play live, and the effortlessness she displays while playing is remarkable. I've played in bands with drummers. I ran a recording studio with pro drummers cutting tracks there. I've seen drummers, many of them, all of them professionals. NONE of them had the je ne sais quoi this young, diminutive teen has. She makes experienced professional drummers earning lots of money look sloppy, lazy, and robotic. I've seen super good drummers. She is super good. The best in the world? Not today. Tomorrow, or perhaps this weekend. She'll get there, just so long as she doesn't let Hollywood media vampires get to her, or go so boy crazy that the crazy part of that descriptive phrase doesn't overwhelm her talent. I'm crossing my fingers. She's too nice a girl to experience excessive adult-sized pain. The same goes for her family. They're too nice to have their little girl be consumed by the fire of fame. I think everyone around her owes it to her to try and keep her head on her shoulders and her hands on her sticks and her feet on her pedals FIRMLY. With any luck.....we'll see her development for years to come. All drummers are magic and better than most musicians. She's a special kind of magic.
@salvadormonella8953 just saw this. I agree 💯 %. Yoyoka has plugged in to a power greater than herself. She may be the most remarkable musician in the 🌎. No lie! We shall see!
There is ZERO tension in her face, body it’s incredible
💯👌
Thrilling original part, thrilling performance from Yoyoka. Thanks for the reaction!
Once again Yoyoka letting us know she's a rocker at heart. Let the wood chips fly.
She is so fun to watch. Just phenomenal.
She makes me smile inside. How I wish I could play a tenth as good as Yoyoka. First time I saw her five years ago was when she covers Good Times Bad Times. I was in awe then but now just completely mesmerized.
Was that 5 years ago!?
That's a legit hard song. She nailed it
Mr Big was a phenomenal band they were absolutely rockin and Yoyoka absolutely nailed it she is out of this world
💯👌
"A whole different box of frogs".... 🤣 Yes, Yoyoka really is. The expressions on your face as you watch her play are so good. I always enjoy your Yoyoka commentaries. Thank you!
Our drumming sensation continues to shine and I can gladly say that her and her family now reside in our United States! And Andrew DO NOT feel bad about not knowing the band or the cover. I probably have a few years on you age wise and quite proud to say that I am a long time 'rocker' myself all starting with my childhood in Detroit, Michigan and living just down the street from the original Motown Records. I, too, have never heard of this group and sure as h*** have never heard this song! WOW! What a cover! Yoyoka? Keep 'em coming my dear! The warmest of greetings to you Andrew from balmy Las Vegas, Nevada...WOW!
Oh I def know the name of the band.
Just couldn't have told you a song!
Lately, she’s been sitting in on gigs with the house band at the Whiskey A-GoGo (Lost Zeppelin ?). So versatile and such a pro at 14 - still blows my mind. 😎
🙌
Yoyoka's very close to 14yo, but won't be until October 12th. So not too late to send her a Birthday card 😀
Best Wishes. ☮
Comments feed the Al Gore 'y them.
Six more days 🙂
Actually, she has been a part of our show Ultimate Jam Night not part of any Whisky A Go Go house band.
Most recently we had her do a drum solo as an introduction to a Guns N Rose's song. It was utterly amazing. Hopefully the video will be uploaded soon.
Separately she also covered a Tool song.
@@adamversus Thank you for the extra information, especially the 'heads up' for her upcoming videos.
I've subscribed.
Best Wishes. ☮
Her work on the ride is AMAZING
Yup!
I learned about limb independence from El Estapario and you, Andrew. I believe Yoyoka is a great example of this.
Amazing. What else can you say when you see a performance like this?
Simply amazing.
Thanks for the great reaction Andrew.
My pleasure!! 🙏
Drummers name is Pat Torrey. I think he is deceased. Guitar, Paul Gilbert. Bass, Billy Sheehan!
That's a hell of a band
Dude the control is what surprised me. She owned tone and volume throughout
I've definitely enjoyed her foray into fusion / jazz - because it is expanding her vocabulary. In her excellent work with Ken Okada, her fills were expectedly mostly rock style. I detected alot of the same influences in her drums solos... But as she is rehearsing / playing / performing new (to her) styles, she's adding new vocabulary to the muscle memory... Fantastic...
Watching Yoyoka continue to impress even more is just an amazing thing. Great stuff.
As for this track, it is difficult not to get lost in Billy Sheehan's bass playing (who has collabed with Yoyoka when she was 10). I mean - getting to play with the dude who absolutely crushed it on Elephant Gun in '86... whoa... :)
Banger track! And great playing
She just uploaded a video (with camera audio) playing with Tom Morello's son Roman on guitar, an all kid lineup, with Jack Black on vocals - at a birthday party for a 100 year old Morello. I guess someone was watching all those RATM covers with her and her family! She is definitely bringing as many smiles to the original artists as they are bringing to her. So happy for her! (not for reaction / there are better options... just mentioning for coolness!)
Hi Andrew, once again two for one, a great performance from Yoyoka who goes to another level of performance, solid, precise and powerful without any burrs and followed by excellent comments as always.
Many thanks! 🙏
Yes! Yes ! I’m so happy she nailed it! And even added a little of herself too!
🙌
There was a part when she was looking straight ahead, This look of joy and kinda amazement and perhaps thinking, What a great player Pat was
No she was wondering what's for dinner seriously. 😂
How is she so relaxed and tension free? Insane.
One of my faves from her so far. Awesome
Mr Big was/is HUGE in Japan for many yrs
Right on! 🤘
Don't you mean BIG in Japan? =)
Paul Gilbert also using Japanese made gear in one of the song, MAKITA 😂
Pat Torpey amazing drummer and very underrated. May he RIP gone to early
Definitely next level, perfection.
Couldn't agree more! What a fantastic player
I'm probably wrong but it seems to me that she's keeping her elbows closer to her body. Her movements look more compact.
So right. She is getting stronger and needs less swing to get the right strike. May have seen Terry Williams of Dire Straits in an Alchemy live video, it's his way too.
Track is from 1993,drummer was Pat Torpey, sadly deceased in 2018.
Loved your expert commentary as always Andrew. Yoyoka makes it look like a walk in the park and appears fresh as a daisy at the end it blows my mind .🤯😊❤
Happy Birthday Yoyoka!
I just hope she doesn't get burned out before she turns 20.
Hi Andrew,as you say Yoyoka has taken it to the next level and there's something else I notice and that's her body posture during the entire cover and her supreme confidence ,on another level as well Wow.
She's smashin' it at the mo!
Man, I was so hoping for you would have done a fresh reaction these days, and here we are. I extremely enjoy the befuddled face of yours throughout her video. What a ride we had with this yound lad/y, became 14 not long ago. Great. Kudos, thanks. Cheers
You enjoy Andrew's befuddlement? You cad! Taking pleasure in others' confusion? How sadistic. I personally find it beneath dignity that a grown man acts like such a child. The worst is those inserted videos and pictures of animals, as if animals can emote human emotions. NEWS FLASH: they can't. Well, maybe dogs can, but rodents and other lesser critters cannot. "Thanks" Andrew for perpetuating the myth that animals are just like little, hairy humans, but without the credit cards and opposable thumb. Thanks, Andrew, for setting society back educationally and zoologically-wise by decades. When the world ends in zombie apocalypse, we know whose fault it was.
WOW! That was friggin awesome!😀
great cover. yoyoka still killing it. she did a cover of 46 and 2, recently, too
She always blows me away with how damned good she is.
The drummer on the original is Pat Torpey.
🙏
I have just seen - Tower of Power - What is Hip? / Drum Covered by YOYOKA. It would be very interesting to see your take on that performance.
If you liked this one Andrew you should check out her cover of Take cover also by Mr. Big featuring bassist Billy Sheehan , Pat Torpey was a very underrated drummer sadly no longer with us . R.I.P.
That's a great video of those 4... and a cool song. She has a lot of control in that song.
Try any of her covers, even going back to age 7. Not a single miss in her solo covers, all show a unique side of her.
This whole band is world class musicians- drummer included
She’s amazing!! ❤
What a display of talent! Pat Torpay would be so proud! This IS NOT an easy groove and Billy Sheehan and Pat really carry it. It’s fast paced but tight! GREAT job!!!
Pat Torpey, THE ELEGANCE AT HIGH LEVEL MADE DRUMMER
Like some said... Pat Torpey was the original drummer. Died from Parkinson Desease in 2018. Before Mr. Big, he played for Impelliteri and for Robert Plant's solo band. He was probably the best "pocket/groove" drummer of all the Hard Rock drummers from the late 80s - early 90s era. But he could also be extremely technical when needed to be. But he never overplayed on a song. On top of that, he was a really good singer too.
That song is the opening track from Mr. Big's 3rd album "Bump Ahead". Released in 1993.
Mr. Big became worldwide famous for their acoustic ballad "To Be With You", but every single one of their albums have these technical demanding songs in them. They have the perfect balance between technical proficiency and melodic accesibility on their records.
Fantastic reaction, Andy! As mentioned below, this was shot in a rented space in LA. Her dad Aki was not totally happy with the mix as they couldn't bring all the recording gear; however, as you said, it is still amazing. Another fun note on this cover: if you look carefully in the foot cam you can see someone sitting on the floor grooving along (I suspect her brother Shido). It seems every she puts out now is next-level, and as others have mentioned, her gigs at Whiskey A GoGo are no rehearsal, no sound check, and in most cases, playing with others for the first time. Nothing phases her! From her recent gig on Tuesday Sept 26 2023:
"Tuesday was @ultimatejamnight at @thewhiskyagogo ! I jammed "You Cloud Be Mine" by @gunsnroses and "Forty Six &2 " by @toolmusic . These were the first songs I had ever tried. Of course, no rehearsal, no sound check. It was very tense, but fun! Personally, I had a lot to reflect on, but I am proud to have been able to play with this great group of musicians.
I was especially honored to finally play with @chuckwrightbass , who I have always wanted to play with! He was still a cool bass player. We will definitely play together again! Thanks also to @marikawaguchi7 for always supporting me! I would love to play at the next @ultimatejamnight again. Thank you to the staff, co-stars, and audience! And happy birthday to @halsparks ! Hope to be able to JAM with you next time!"
"Personally, I had a lot to reflect on, but I am proud to have been able to play with this great group of musicians."
This quote intrigued (and worried, tbh) me. Reflect on what? Only her performance (not happy with it, or...), or is it something more serious.
Can you ask her what she meant by that, if it's not too personal.
@@pcarhe i will add it to my list of questions for the next Patreon Zoom call!
@@pcarhe Sounds like this is just a direct translation of a throwaway Japanese phrase that would probably be better translated as ". . . so much has happened . . . ." or "... thinking over my experience ..."
This is a Mr. Big cover. Yoyoka did some remote jams with Billy Sheehan, the bass player for this band, back when she was 10. Billy Sheehan and the guitarist Paul Gilbert are kind of high-profile old-school shredders, but cooler. The drummer, Pat Torpey was pretty great, and unfortunately passed away from Parkinson's disease. This is a fairly faithful cover, but it's hard to be as punctual as Yoyoka.
Absolutely amazing best ive ever seen.❤
Yoyoka is the teacher now.
Awesome!
I loved Mr. Big many years ago. I haven't thought about that band in so long.
I love this
Yoyo-chan is growing by leaps and bounds.
She sent a chill up my spine
Yeah this is super
the outtakes seriously made it more legit!
Amazing.
Ha! Just watched this on Yoyoka's channel and I thought "I wonder if Rooney has seen this yet?".
👀🤣👌
Yesterday i watched her do What Is Hip by Tower of Power. So apparently she can play jazz as well which is pretty complicated. She made it look easy. Super impressive if you have a chance to watch it.
Pat Torpey was an amazing drummer. You have to be, if you're gonna play with Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert. Theres a pretty good video of MR. Big live at Budokan in like 08/09 they do this song with a lot of footage taken from behind the kit if I remember right of Pat playing this
Paul Gilbert, guitar extraordinaire, is in this band. There's always a complimentary drummer. I've been playing George Lynch, Frank Hannon, Dio,etc since 1985 when I was 15. That's a long time and there are songs and players that I don't even mess with because I can't play em smooth and clean. To be able to play anything you want because your capability is on par with the best players must be lovely. She's been there since she was 9 or 10. That is insanity.
Miss Pat Torpey so much 😭
Yoyoka has put another cover out, 46 & 2 by Tool, excellent cover.
Just saw Yoyoka and 3 other kids cover The Ocean by Led Zep on IG (great!), came over to YT and there's this! Wow she's incredible!
Speaking of female drummers Rooney...Pau from The Warning won Modern Drummer's 2023 Reader's Poll for Up and Coming Drummer! Pretty cool.
Now please pass me some of those non-sponsoring Doritos Brand Tortilla Chips from the fine folks at Frito-Lay, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc. 🔼🔺️⚠️🥤😁
Almost forgot to mention this small detail...Pau got to play Neil Peart's drum kit! Pau testing drums, The Warning Argentina yt ch 🤯🤘
SHES AT A DIFFERENT LEVEL TO US MERE MORTALS MT, AND THOSE MAGIC HOOFS OF HERS, WORDS FAIL ME, ALSO NEVER SEEN YOU SO QUIET, AND THE SHEER LOOK OF AMAZEMENT SO REAL, YOYO IS IN THE BUILDING.
thank you.
thanks have a good weekend.
If I'm feeling a bit under the pump, I seek out one of her videos and the world is all happiness again.
Me too
Great commentary Andrew!
Thanks Chris!
Best way to play… having fun!
I think her best performance, yet... Great Job Andrew,,, breaking it down...
WOW!😮
She's 13 now. Same age that Neil Peart started taking lessons...
"That's a whole different box of frogs"... I'm never going to be able to unhear that...
She now lives in Oakland California her and family move out of Japan a year ago one reason why everything looks better and she been playing with several bands out in LA California where she moved from Oakland California to LA around 3 months ago she doing quite well for herself
🙌
AFAIK, Yoyoka moved to LA from Oakland a few months ago, and is still in LA..
What do you know that I don't?
It isn't important for most, but fans in either LA *or* Oakland and the Bay area should be alert to see her live, and support her. So being correct matters.
Best Wishes. ☮
I saw Yoyoka's live stream on Sept. 2nd, IIRC, they were moving house not city.
BTW Kii did a pretty good cover of Colorado Bulldog a couple of months ago.
@@gbulmer You are right. The Somas live in LA. Oakland was a kind of intermediate station.
Hello Andrew. I have 2 suggestions of new Yoyoka drum covers you may react to. Fall out Boy- We didnt start the fire. And Steely Dan- Home at last. I am a big fan of Yoyoka, and your reactions.
Oh damn 'home at last' is an all time fave of mine
@@AndrewRooneyDrumsand she'llshow you exactly how to play it,!
The studio is a rented one. Until there is a music room at home.
Looks great
Mr Big have been featured by Yoyoka before when she collaborated with Billy Sheehan to do Take Cover. Billy created the original bass part for the Soma family band number Utopia. (well worth a listen). Mr Big are a class act. Check out their cover of Smoke on the Water, live. Singer on drums, Billy Sheehan on lead guitar and so on........
One of her best, actually...
Yup!
R.I.P Pat Torpey 🤘🏻🖤⚡🥁
Somebody get that kid some rhinestone shades! No cheap sun glasses here. Her future is so bright she needs shades!
🤣🤣👌
Thank you for taking the time, and making the effort to fix the technical issue.
I'm still trying to understand your reaction.
Is the 'nub' of it her apparent 'headroom'? She looks like she is playing effortlessly, well within her ability. Yet she is very fast around the kit, playing a *LOT* of notes, while every note sounds clean, crisp, and with wide dynamics.
Or have I missed something, and there is more?
Best Wishes. ☮
I was extremely impressed, but I wasn't even good enough to become a failed drummer. 😞
AFAIK, Comments feed Mr Al Gore he them. 😀
BTW Kii did a pretty good cover (to me) of Colorado Bulldog a couple of months ago.
The crux of the reaction is this is one of the best covers I've ever seen!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Thanks for replying. My goodness you're quick! (and I'll resist my inborn British instinct to make a bad taste joke about that 😀🤔)
So, it's the combination of everything you identify, and there's no summary. I'll watch again.
Thanks again.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums BTW, in the unlikely event you have spare time, you might be interested to watch Yoyoka learn to play a song she's never played before, live:.
_Yoyoka learning Radiohead's "Paranoid Android"_ ruclips.net/video/d1Z3fZsIkvI/видео.html
It starts at 17:10 and finishes at 23:63. It's part of a drum practice live stream.
I don't understand enough to say if that's a good way to learn a song, but you can,.
It seems like unusual teaching material.
I'm guessing if it's a familiar enough song, and demonstrates useful tactics, she might provide you an example to use with your students. (However, I can imagine she might be too good, and be disheartening, rather than inspiring, for some students.)
Best Wishes. ☮
More food for Mr Al Gore he them anyway. 😀
The drummer for MR. Big is Patrick Allan Torpey
Mr. Rooney - I keep looking for a reaction to Yoyoka doing What is Hip. Have you done that one and maybe it is just available to Patreon members? If not any Patreon members out there PLEASE request it. It is another "next level" cover by Yoyoka IMO.
Pat Torpey R.I.P.
I,actually said out loud “that’s my girls” 😂
LOL
After 60 years of drumming, I have to ask myself "Why do I play Music?"
Had to do a double take and rewind when you started out with "what is up, Andrew, it is RUclips here"! And I see that your coffee mug looks empty! Staying up late? 😉
HAHAHAHA
GGggrrrrrrrrrr yeAH. That's how to wake up in the morning.
Mr. Big 3rd album
YOYOKA likes a challenge. Just gotta find a song that challenges her 😊
I like that she has been exploring some jazz lately, but she clearly has a lot more fun playing fast rock or metal, and she's damn good at it. Not related to her playing, but I think that ride cymbal needed more mic coverage. Got lost behind the crashes.
She beats those drums like they were really bad kids! 🤘
How to tap in to someones personal tempo and bury the track even through accelerando.
😮👌❤️

Andy, I think I posted this somewhere else but if you’re looking for something different to check out, I know you know who Mike Portnoy is, but check out his stuff with the Winery Dogs… Xanadu, Time Machine, or Oblivion.
