There are two types of people in the world: those who've discovered Yoyoka and the joy of her drumming, and those who haven't discovered them yet.

Technically a piece of cake for this prodigy at that age but she loves the funk. Much of this timing, coordination and dynamics was already present in her covers around the age of 7.

It's always fun for Yoyoka fans to see someone discover her amazing talent for the first time. Believe me we all end up with silly grins on our faces every time she releases another video! Other commenters have made a whole raft of great suggestions for you to check out, all I can add is that she is an amazing, charming and funny character as well and belongs to a close knit family of musically gifted lovely people.

"This kid loves music is a slight understatement"...LOL She crawled over to the kit at age 1.5 and has been killin' it ever since. Youngest ever to be added to DrummerWorld's Top 500 Drummers of all time. Has more accomplishments than most career drummers. In a recent interview she stated that Music is her first language. She has been playing drums before she could talk. She can play a song after 2-3 listens. Is never asked to practice, decides what she is going to play on her own, and has withdrawals if she doesn't get to play for 2 days. She loves playing, but doesn't actually like to practice, because, as she told Ellen Degeneres, on one of her two appearances on her show, she's "lazy". Ellen laughed. Everyone thinks she practices songs hundreds of times, but she doesn't She practices about an hour a day. A little more when she has a gig. Her father is a sound engineer and taught her how to tune her own drums. She has 11 mics on her kit, and is always praised for how great her sound is. She has been known to give other band members a "dirty" look when they mess up and has been advising local bands how "to play a song better", since age 6. At first when she told the band that, they all looked at each other like WTH! Then tired it the way she suggested and agreed with her. When asked how she is so in tune with what all the other band members are doing, she said she pictures all of them like she is a drone and is looking down on them (from a visual aspect). When an interviewer said she makes playing a song look so easy, then asked what is she thinking about when she is playing, she responded, "Sometimes I'm thinking about what's for dinner". LOL What you witnessed with the awesome kick pattern was called "The YOYOKA Effect", that she adds, making most covers better than the originals. She is able to do that because of her "Magic Socks". Has several nicknames, "The Hokkaido Hammer", "The Human Metronome", and others. Her mom is proud of the fact that she routinely destroys her kit because she hits so hard. Destroying a pair of sticks every other day and 3-4 cymbals per year. She intentionally strikes the rim on most shots for special effect. If you can't tell we all love this girl! She plays "Rosanna" effortlessly and flawlessly. Many adult drummers say they've been playing for 20 years and still can't play it. She has been teaching that kick pattern since 8 years old. She has 8 endorsement deals including DW.

Wonderful reaction. Thank you. Yoyoka went into a studio with Japans rock royalty for a short day for her 12th birthday and recorded 10 rock standards all one take and some of the best covers you are likely to hear. Any rehearsals were done prior and at a distance. Now 13 she currently manages to produce a fresh video weekly. Her latest is Jeff beck's Led Boots! She also co-wrote a prog rock number called Sparkling. (just name dropping, Derek Sherinian played keys for it).

The most remarkable thing about her isn't that she's a kid but that even at 9 and 10 she had this ability to add excitement and sizzle to the music, elevating it in a way I'm not sure I've seen any other drummer do. Check out what she did with Peter Gabriel's Steam for a great example. She often doesn't put out a cover unless she thinks she can improve on the original, so you pretty much can't go wrong with any of her covers that are just her playing alone.

Hey, great reaction! I do hope you can listen to much more of her efforts. She's played with some amazingly talented bands in Japan, and is now trying to establish herself in the US.
The crazy thing is that she started at the age of two, when she was watching her dad rehearse with his band. Story is that she toddled over the drum kit, at which point the drummer sat her in his lap, and that was it for her lol. At an insanely young age she was sitting in with her dad's band on stage and killing it, steady as a rock. Now 13, her technique has progressed to the point that she has the power and authority of a true, grown-up professional.

_Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic - Fly As Me / YOYOKA_ ruclips.net/video/PY41NhAqjhk/видео.html
    She can 'swing' a song:

or add 'bounce' (more appropriate for the song title?)

@@glenkelley6799 Yoyoka's "Led Boots" cover is _slightly_ dangerous. I haven't been able to listen just the once. I need to listen several times, then 'boom' 25 minutes have passed. 😂 But no real complaints. 😀
I'm very pleased she's found someone talented to jam with. She needs to play with other talented musicians, and be challenged musically. One of my fears is she won't be stretched enough in the US, not because their aren't talented musicians, just they have other, higher priority, aims.
      Anyway, I'll stop ranting.

Japan produces ridicilously good female drummers, but I never have seen one of them being so good as Yoyoko at this age is; not even the great great Senri Kawaguchi or Kanade Sato (now drumming in Koiai with Lisa-X). Mr. Bulmer gave you some excellent examples but to be honest, I want to advice you to go through her entire catalogue. It's like stepping into drumming paradise and you see all the developping layers of her drumming swing, funk, ferosious (prog)rock and above all FUN. What she did a couple of weeks ago with Led Boots was again something trully special and a completely different approach than the original, but at least as good. A special shout out has to be given to Glen Black. He has supported Yoyoka in many ways. He deserves a lot of respect. Glen and Wave Potter (the nicest dude on the planet) have already made a Yoyoka documentary : ruclips.net/video/ONY0qUWR5pQ/видео.html. There are a lot of musical Yoyoka goldmines to delve. Good Luck
While we are on the subject of high quality female musicians I recomment you my favourite band The Warning from Mexico, Band Maid from Japan.
I have the entire list with links of The Warning, so if you want I sent it to you.
Finally the current best bass player of the world by a country mile, from India: Mohini Dey: ruclips.net/video/CTEWBZY-i5w/видео.html.
This decade is the decade of the great female bands.
To end with Yoyoka: I hope that Yoyoka will start playing with Ellen Alaverdyan (10 years old) and Nandi Bushell (13 years old). That could be the new Cream.

    • @gbulmer
      @gbulmer Год назад

Thank you for your kind mention. I agree, it is much better to go through her entire catalogue. I'd say start at 7yo, and her cover of Senri Kawaguchi's "Onyx". However, that's over 100 covers, which is a bit daunting. I've been watching Jeff's reactions for a while, and that little list was an attempt to find some 'hits' and variety for him, and any passing 'musical explorers'. So thanks again for the 'shout out'.
I'm guessing it's only a happy idyll, but I'm going to disagree with your Ellen Alaverdyan and Nandi Bushell suggestion on principle. Sorry. No disrespect intended,
They all need stretching by talented, experienced, successful musicians, composers and producers. I don't think they have the maturity or experience to mentor and drive each other, yet. I have little clue since the 90s. Maybe Vinnie Colaiuta, Anderson ,Paak, and a _great_ producer _might_ bring enough talent, variety and success to mentor Yoyoka? She also needs to work with creative composers and experienced musicians.
I sort of agree: _"This decade is the decade of the great female bands."_ Japanese bands, and The Warning have a lot of talent and a lot of traction. However, I don't understand why there seems so little from anywhere else. _Maybe_ the RUclips algorithm is failing me?
      Best Wishes. ☮

@@gbulmer Great point on cooperations for Yoyoka. She has already worked with top names in the business as you'll come across het catalogue. Those talents needs the mentorship of those who've been there. Yoyoka has released her own song Sparkling [ruclips.net/video/5JxJi8ohvwI/видео.html] with Ronda Smith on Bass and Derek Sherinian on Keys. This is just one example of top trier players that want to play and have played with her.
Other female (driven) bands that are very interesting are Plush (just toured with The Warning), Voice of Bacebrot, Larkin Poe, Laura Cox, Amyl and the Sniffers, Yee Loi and Starcrawler (the last 3 bands prove that Punk is not dead) and many more.
I can understand your position on Cream and they have to prove it. FYI: I'm a big big fan of Gingers drumming.
At the end of the day they all first have to go through puberty and then time will tell if they still have the hunger.

    • @gbulmer

@@saltyshowers9356 Thank you for replying. I've watched every Yoyoka cover, including live, plus "Sparkling", "Happy", "Bicycle" and their other 'family' songs, and her drum course. I was delighted too when Ronda Smith and Derek Sherinian agreed to collaborate on "Sparkling".
Thank you for the list of female driven bands, I knew a few, but most are new. So I'll check them out.
I liked Ginger Baker a lot in my youth. It was only later that I learned 'he was not a good person'.
Yes, I totally agree, they all need to go through puberty. I feel fans should actively reduce stress on them, while they grow and develop through those years. Then, as you say, "time will tell".
Reducing stress and lowering expectation is partly why I though the "Cream" analogy was a bit of a stretch. Cream was a "Supergroup". It was constructed from musicians who were already experienced, successful, almost 'worshipped' with years spent in previous "top-tier" bands.
I'd be thrilled and delighted if they found some very competent, level-headed, reliable musicians to collaborate with on a regular basis. Ideally some musicians who compose, so they can experience and develop those talents. AFAIK, talented session musicians who can support tours, or turn up at a studio, and create 'magic' in a few takes, are still busy working. So 'fronting a band' isn't essential yet.
      Thanks again for replying
      Best Wishes. ☮
