Apart from school, YOYOKA is currently a regular for a couple of rock numbers every couple of weeks at the Ulimate Jam show at the Whisky A Go Go, is recording albums with the Ken Ocada Group and recently, with the same band breezed through a 1hour 50minute set at the San Jose Jazz Break Room venue. She was a full member of the band taking mid-number solos and an individual one, all in the jazz idiom. Right up your Street Andrew. Hope you have a chance to peek. The penultimate number Traces I find intriguing starting aroung the 1hr40 mark of the full video of the set on the San Jose Jazz channel.
The part that blows my mind is the ghost notes in the section that starts for the first time at 5:15. Danny Carey doesn't play them (or rather he plays them once on the intro to the second chorus), but Yoyoka plays them every time, and they're ridiculously uniform each time. They help glue the riff together and support the vocal. She really makes the song her own because you can really hear her more Bonham/Ian Paice-influenced style at the same time as she's hitting all of the touchpoints of the original.
In the bones In the body In the brain W O W ! 😮 YOYOKA is a rare individual and we are blessed to share the planet with her. Now that being said YOU make our appreciation grow with your reaction! Thank you!
I don’t think there is anything or any genre of music that Yoyoka can’t play. Even at age 14, her talent and ability to quickly learn and flawlessly perform new songs with seemingly little effort makes her an ideal session drummer. 🤯 (as usual)
It would be a serious understatement to say that Yoyoka is a drum prodigy. She is outrageously loose and tight at the same time. As cool as a cucumber. Yoyoka is also obviously very happy while playing drums and that is what's really important in the end. I have been following her drumming since she was 8 years old and she still never ceases to amaze me.
"outrageously loose and tight at the same time" - that's it exactly. She's playing stuff you know is difficult, but for her it doesn't just look easy, she *inhabits* the music. She plays everything as if she wrote it!
Awesome reaction as always and technical breakdown. Prior to this cover release she had already played this live unrehearsed with no sound check at Whiskey A Go Go with pro musicians she had not played with and absolutely drove the bus with authority! A school night as well. The respect she is gathering from all the musicians she plays with is excellent. I love your comments about not needing gear to cover a song. Many people seem to equate skill with the amount of gear you have. Neil Peart showed this during a Buddy Rich tribute with a simple kit.
Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer had a massive kit with a huge gong and tubular bells. Big big kit. I saw a youtube video recently with him and a snare and sticks. Unbelievable! It was astounding the variety of music he created with just that. A great talent!
Thank you Andrew for your always relevant comments. The more I look at Yoyoka the more I see Bonzo, not a big drum set but so effective in her mastery of her instrument. Extraordinary. If you have a chance, go see her performance at the Whiskey-a-Gogo that she posted online.
By all the videos about YOYOKA over the years it is just mindblowing to follow the evolusion she been able to show almost in realtime she is the definition and a pioneer in many regards and her mucisianship and hunger for getting better is even more impressive a true soul of a real didicated personality and at this age.Respect.
There is being able to play a cover perfectly and there is owning the track completely, making it your own, make it groove and let it SLAP! Yoyoka makes it SLAP!
She’s doing amazing job. Her accents on the drums is so perfect. I seem to live TooL. I know that song is really difficult to play one of those songs you really go to study the music. Also, I wanted to say thank you for your RUclips page. I enjoy it a lot.
I am a Japanese expat living in NZ (Whangarei). I myself come from Hokkaido, Japan like Yoyoka does. So I feel quite familiar with both you and Yoyoka. And that's why I watch your reaction videos. I prefer watching yours to other reaction guys. I am so proud of Yoyoka taking the world by storm with her talent.
Thanks for the great reaction, AS ALWAYS! But, with all due respect Andrew, at this point is she really "tackling" a song, as you say, or just looking for a song that challenges her to the point where she actually has to think about what she's playing and not "what's for dinner"? I'm jesting you Andrew, but it's true. In an interview a while back she was asked, "What do you think about when you're playing a song?" And our "cheeky" (Ian Paice reference) little friend says, "Sometimes, I'm thinking about what's for dinner." And as usual, she takes a really complex song and just makes it look like any beginner could play it. YOYOKA is truly amazing. And thanks for providing that difficulty level , would love to hear that on all her songs, as some of us are not musicians and it helps us understand how really great she is, or is that just redundant? LOL Thanks again!
Yeah, she’s a keeper. 1)It’s a DRUM solo INSTEAD of a guitar solo in the middle section. 2)Playing THAT song on a minimalistic set is awesome 3)Your restraint on pausing the video(I could see when you wanted to and didn’t)is admirable but what was with that St. Anger sounding snare. Going to see Tool in January so can’t wait for that. 4th time since 2002🤘🥁🖖🎸✌️🎤
Excellent point! She looks to be waiting with the sticks already in place, never looks rushed to keep up with what the original drummer came up with on the edge of their abilities at the time.
The suspense isssss killing me .😂 I don't know if you remember our conversation about Yoyoka last fall . I said she was going into the stratosphere this comming year, and I hoped the earth's gravity could hold on to her. I believe next year we better have Yoyoka fitted for a space suit , tethered or at the very least keep her in doors.😂
She plays like a lot of great classical musicians-the instrument is a natural extension of the body, which is an expression of inner intention. Like you said, Andrew, she looks slower than she is because there’s nothing wasted in the path from the mind to the instrument. The great piano teacher Sebok used to say, “You don’t have to DO anything, it’s already in the music.”

It has really matured her, her pocket is great, and she looks so comfortable, so relaxed, never rushed. Obviously, a difference from only playing with backing tracks all the time.
Yoyoka has been doing gigs since she was under 5 years old . I believe the biggest thing in the last year is she had instruction up until this year she was mostly self taught. 😊

@@janbleekerI think you are correct. I guess you've seen the San Jose Jazz gig. She had charts for that but for jazz with all the improvisation there'll be no drum chart. She'll just need to know the game plan. And she did!😮
"Yoyoka doesn't read music" I question this now... I know that had been the case previously. In her videos in the studio recording with Ken Okada, she has a music stand next to her hats, and a time or two she looks over at it. I can't tell (in 360p) what is on the page... but it looks too long to be a chart, yet not dense enough to be a note for note drum score. Even if it is simply melody + changes... she does appear to be referring to it. So, I'd guess she has been working on it. and that's awesome!
If I understood Yoyoka correctly, she ‘follows’ the music on the papers, so she knows where everyone is in the song. She doesn’t use the papers to read a drum score.
@@janbleeker OK. Good to know... I watched a long video in which she talks about how she makes her cover videos. (Always in one take, no edits - by which she probably means 'cuts'.) She talked about placing the microphones, producing the final version on video-editing software. In the video, she casually mentions that she usually listens to a song *2 or 3 times* before she films her cover. I'm like - *WHAT?*
