Norway 2-1 England (1981) WCQ

  • One of England's most infamous defeats comes in a World Cup qualifier away to Norway in September 1981. Despite taking the lead through a Bryan Robson goal, England are behind by half-time and fail to recover as Norway hold out for the victory. The result means England look set to miss out on a place in the finals, but an unexpected sequence of results will enable them to qualify by beating Hungary two months later. Includes brief studio analysis by John Bond with Jim Rosenthal - the English mood after this defeat is inevitably vastly different to the famously jubilant Norwegian "your boys took a hell of a beating" commentary!

Lets be honest, Engerland were lucky to qualify for the world cup in 1982. Romania had beaten England at home and drew with England at Wembley, but Romania squandered points against the other teams. In saying all that, the England team at the world cup in 1982 were a good side and were unlucky not to make the semi-finals. For me the best player in the England was Brian Robson. Trevor Brooking missed all three of England's away defeats, which I think was a factor in them struggling so badly. The longer his England career went on the better he seemed to become at international level, and many of his best performances came when he was in his thirties.

Unlike in 1982, we were awful throughout 1981. The only reason we got to Spain was because Romania completely f***ed it up, not us on merit. Hungary had already qualified and had next to little to play for when we beat them 1-0 at Wembley in November that year and they had next to none of the skill and talent that Slaven Bilic's 2007 Croatia side had who knocked us out in similar circumstances.

That point is true (England have no monopoly on luck there, Argentina just scrapped qualification for Russia) but this was a very good team, the England team that tried to qualify for '78' only lost one match to Italy (who they beat at Home) and went out due to goal difference not points to Italy...From the late 70's to 1990 England had excellent players and some superb squads and if Keegan-Brooking and Hoddle had played the Spain from the get go, the English would have got the semi of the 82 World cup regarded by some as the best of all time...some praise...

Qualification was extremely hard to achieve in the 60s/70s when only team in a group went through but for 1982, it was top two who went through. And it really was Romania's collapse that got us to Spain. When we were in Spain, it was a different story. If only Keegan was fit. Same with France 98, if only Hoddle took Gascoigne.
