  • This video got finished a little later than I had hoped, so sorry about that. Also, turtles. (That's funny, apparently.)
Next review will be on a harem anime.

It says a lot when the Fanfics are more cathartic than the actual source materiel, mostly the ones that gives Naru some well deserved comeuppance.

The domestic abuse in this anime goes overboard, and the misunderstandings that occur every 5 mins is beyond annoying. I don't know, let the roles be reversed in this anime, and the manga would probably never exist.

      LOL! XD you're joking, right?
Dude, lightnin' up will ya? It's just a fictional rom-com story.
The main character is getting beat up by naru was apart of the comedic element( even if it wasn't funny at all), but still it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, anyway.

For real, Shadow. Your points on why you don't like *Love Hina* almost exactly mirror my own for why I despise the goofy slice-of-life romance comedy series, *Ranma 1/2*. Both shows have a disgusting over reliance on nonsensical misunderstandings, to the point it's almost scary.
I just can't get into an anime-series which constantly abuses the main character, because it makes 'em look like a pathetic pushover.
One of the main reasons why I love Kazuma Yagami is because he's such a badass who won't let bitches walk all over him like most "Harem Protagonists" such as Keitaro, Ranma, Tsukune, etc do all the damn time. It's gets infuriating.
Is it really so difficult for the writers to come up with the jokes that ain't about the main character getting battered around by his "main love interest." Seriously. That would make an "Harem Series" so much more appealing in my opinion.

This was my first anime I ever got into... That's why I really cherish it. It's a little old and kinda has that "classic" sort of anime feel, if that makes sense. I was... 12-13 when I finished it, so I think that's why I found it hilarious and enjoyable. The constant beating up of Keitaro made me simply feel sorry for the poor guy, but I was happy by the end of the series, in particular, the manga.

  • @MarioLover76

Keitaro has an ahoge, or an antenna hair on his head.
Ahoge are usually on a character who act/or stupid in general for comedic reasons.
Examples- Konata Izumi, Rikka Takanashi, Shana
An ahoge is only one antenna hair, so characters like Nagisa Furukawa or Sanae Furukawa who have 2 or 3 antenna hair are not considered stupid.

To answer your question, its not necessary to separate them and yet it is. Anime is very different from most other animations out and yet its very similar. Sometimes anime is more mature and dark then other animations out there. But the main point remains that one of the big things that separate anime from animation is its home country.

  • @SasamiTM

I pretty much hated Love Hina start to finish, Keitaro is a spineless loser who has no real character (how about saying "i'm the manager, punch me again and you're thrown out on the street missy" at some point?) and Naru is at best an bitch who violently assaults Kei over petty misunderstandings. The only character I found myself liking a lot was Shinobu and that was mostly because she wasn't a sociopath like the rest of the cast and actually treated Keitaro like an actual human being.

A lot of people likes to compare this show to Ranma1/2 and to a degree I can see why, but there are a few differences that makes Ranma 1/2(at least to me) more tolerable than Love Hina.1. A good portion of the stuff Ranma gets into (including all of his marriage-contracts) is not his fault, it is his stupid criminal father Genma who is constantly using Ranma as a way to get out of trouble and him keeping Ranma ignorant of how things work in the real world. All Genma cares about is stuffing his own stomach and living off of Ranma's hard work without having to do anything himself. 2. Ranma is a martial artist, which means that he is used to getting beat up. In fact, I often liked to think that he is deliberatly letting Akane beat him up to not piss of her father. He is capable of defending himself, which is something Keitaro is not. 3. As I mentioned in nr 1, Ranma has been raised by a man who obviously have no idea about how raise a socially stable child since he was very young and therefore a lot of Ranma's problems regarding social interactions can be traced back to him. Not to mention that Ranma's father is also a sexist who believes that girls are weak, which leads to Ranma's hatred of his curse as well as most of his problems with the opposite sex.

Good choice, I'm a bit fan of romantic comedy anime and Love Hina made me grit my teeth just to finish it. Keitaro has no character or spine for the entire show and Naru is just the one joke over and over. Even after he risks his life to save hers (in the above mentioned evil spirit episode) she goes right back to treating him like crap and punching him.
If I may suggest a alternative, Ai Yori Aoshi, it just got a box set release of both seasons and it's one of the best of the genre I've seen.

It's hard to argue with most of the points you make, but you're completely wrong in complaining about the comedy being derived from random weirdness. There is nothing at all random about the imagery in _Love Hina_. Remember Japan has cultural touchstones like any other country, but we might not be familiar with them all. The flying turtle, for example, is definitely NOT plucked from thin air. Read up on the Gamera movies to see how that image figures into Japanese culture. _Love Hina_, in fact, relies heavily on Japanese monster movie images (for another example, the twin Mutsumis who sing the song to raise the giant turtle out of the lake would be immediately familiar to anyone who's seen Godzilla vs. Mothra -- anyone who saw that would know exactly what _Love Hina_ was going for).
But it's not just monster movies. The entire story is meant to echo the general theme of a Japanese legend about a fisherman named Taro Urashima, who saves a TURTLE that turns out to be a magic turtle who whisks him away to a strange underwater world. So the show's obsession with turtles, which might seem strange at first, kind of depends on the viewer being basically familiar with Japanese literature. I understand if those images sound goofy, and you're certainly entitled to criticize the elements of the show as goofy, no matter what the source. But you CAN'T say it's just random. There are about a dozen other examples, but you get the picture, I hope.

  • @FREKfrek1
    @FREKfrek1 11 лет назад

I don't mind some types of comedic understandings, like two characters are talking in a semi-public place, say a park bench, and discussing a secret that none of them want to say aloud. However their each talking about something else so ones talking about what to do b/c she smashed character 3's radio and the other is talking about them losing character 4's certificate collection or something. Things like that can end up in some funny dialogue as they don't know what the other is talking about.

It has a great cast of characters, each with a distinct personality. It's not a very original set-up but at least it it makes this slice of life, romantic, comedy anime unique. Yes, it does have a lot of misplaced violence on the male main characters, but so do most anime. Even anime like Ranma 1/2 you rarely see the female characters get hurt despite them being trained in combat. And I know this explanation wasn't necessary, but I wanted to give you reasons to watch this anime.

The anime was the reason why Ken Akamatsu brought the manga series to a complete and sudden halt. A new character was suddenly introduced in volume 14 just before the wedding between Keitaro and Naru. Too bad 'Love Hina' ended the way it did. Studio interference was the biggest reason he stopped it and concentrated on 'Negima'. Less studio interference with that project.
The manga had much less violence as all of the girls fell for him.
In conclusion, the anime sucked the left one, but I loved the manga.

  • @twist58
    @twist58 8 лет назад

@ShadowACS. Admittedly, it does tend to annoy whenever Keitaro becomes the receiving end of a Naru Punch on a repetitive basis in each episode. But if it's not her landing a blow at his face, it would be Motoko (and on rare occasion Haruka).
I kind of like that the more she constantly hits Keitaro overtime and even berates him up to the point of ignoring him, Naru just can't stand NOT being away from him for too long, thus the feelings start blooming.

Don't get me wrong, I love Clannad, but here's some ecamples:
Obsession with animals (starfish vs. turtles),
a dopy character constantly getting beaten up due to misunderstandings (Sunohara vs Keitro or whatever)
and Randomness (whenever it occurs). I'm just curious.

kman2010era I think that with Sakamoto, it's good because him being perfect is the joke. He's purposely flawless as a way to parody perfect anime protagonists. Plus, a lot of the humor also comes from side characters trying to outwit Sakamoto only to fail horribly. Overall, it works out different due to its self-aware way of dealing with Sakamoto

I forgot this show existed, and the moment I saw the flying turtle, i decided to go forget it existed again. Thanks for the review! /kissingup

I'm waiting for that one anime that starts out happy, and then we get a misunderstanding which the girl hurts the guy, but instead of him being some kind of SuperJesus, he get ACTUALLY hurt and or dies so the girl can feel bad or something along those lines. I like misunderstandings though they're hilarious to me.

In the Love Hina manga, the girls try run K-man off. Even thougt he owns the building, and the land around it. All this happen in the second chapter of the manga, and shows how weak the main charther he is.

Shadow, I am a big fan of your reviews, I have seen almost every single one of them.Half the anime I watch is because you reviewed it. For example, right after you reviewed Sword Art Online I started watching it and now it is one of my all time favorite anime. Anyway, I wonder if you could check out an anime called Baka and Test. I know it's pretty annoying when every single fan requests that you watch their favorite anime, but believe you might really enjoy it.

Also, Team Four Star's krillin owned count has better writing and timing than Love Hina with Keitaro getting beaten up every time. At least let his pummeling be deserved or spread out or that he endures it so much that getting punched by others is meh to him.

I don't see what I was saying is the equivalent to saying "An American can come from anywhere, as long as he or she wears red, white, and blue clothing", that's a bit of a false equivalency. If I lable animation as American or European you would wonder why i'm seperating them does little for it's description
My question remains unanswered, why is it neccesary to seperate anime from other types of animation, why is it a different medium for expression than any other type of animation.

Hey Shadow ACS. I know you don't like Sailor Moon at all, but I found this one video you might be interested in. It basically rips apart Sailor Moon in a very funny way much similar to the way you talk about it. I don't know, I just thought you might find it entertaining if you haven't already seen it. If not oh well.
He is called the nostalgia critic I would send you the link but I can't though youtube.
Just type in nostalgia critic Sailor Moon
I do enjoy your videos by the way.

Hey ShadowACS, I'm not sure why I'm asking you this in this video but, do you think Clannad can be really melodramatic? I saw it and thought it was amazing but I'm just wondering if sometimes it can be too dramatic. If not, what are somr examples of anime or movies that are melodramatic so I can tell?

If you cut out the flashback, and promise (basically the whole first episode and then some.) I could have mistaken this shoujo for a harem. This is only my opinion but this anime COULD have been better off as a harem... Maybe...

Sgt. Frog is so random, but it did it quite well, but at that time (which was like a year ago) I wasn't the best at judging anime but I still think it's kinda funny and the characters are fun but I don't know what other people think.

ok so just out of curiosity I was wondering if you ever watched the anime 07-ghost ? if not I highly recommend it if you enjoy fantasy, its hard to get into at first but its worth it by episode 3. unfortunately it ends right where the manga starts to get good and there is no second season because it got off track from the manga plot. ( respond whenever you get the chance :)

Ya, I have the same problem with the "Main Character" of Mirai Nikki. Horribly wimpy, insidiously stupid, and has pretty much no will of his own...except for 5 seconds after a "major event" like a parent getting killed.
