- I saw that a mod was created recently that allows you to play through Hollow Knight without visuals, by only showing the hitboxes and nothing else. I decided it would be a fun challenge, as well as a way to have some fun with chroma keying, enjoy!

This unironically gives me a good idea for a video game. It’s a Metroidvania but the further you go into the game, the worse the graphics get until you’re left with just hit boxes and it’s entirely, so in the end, the more you play the game, the more you have to interpret stuff yourself. Or the opposite of that idea who cares.
The opposite might also work, an Ender’s Game style horror where you start with a really simple set of boxes and it slowly becomes more detailed until it’s revealed that you’re really not the good guy at all… just an idea!
Check out the Evoland games, they're exactly what you're describing, just not a Metroidvania.

Generally speaking, there will be some discrepancy between the size of the hitbox and the size of the sprite, to add a bit of built-in leniency to the game. Notice, for example, how small the player's hitbox is vs. the hurtbox of their attacks. As a side note, it's funny and fitting that the hitboxes of the Radiance's attacks are perfectly modeled, because that means there is absolutely no leniency to her attacks. You might expect it to be a box that's slightly smaller than the size of the spike's sprites, but no, you'll get hurt the moment you touch the exact sprite
I wasn't ready for invisible Radiance with perfectly shaped attacks. I guess no-telegraph radial beams were to be expected, but it's still terrifying.

Okay so the reason why circular hitboxes are a bit rare is due to the fact that it is actually more computationally expensive than boxes (essentially, the more edges an object has, the less optimal it is). Unless an attack demands it (for example, Hornet's string field would feel jank as heck if it was a box), it's better to just use squares or triangles.

Not necessarily. Collisions with circles can be calculated quite quickly, it is not necessary to use a many-sided polygon. It depends on how the collision calculation is implemented. Normally calculating collisions between 2 circles is the fastest to compute among all pairs of 2D shapes.

@@TrueAnts1well yes, but actually no. When you are modelling any plane/ surface, it is made up out of lines. That's what any 3D model will look angular if you look close enough

The reason the hit boxes for enemies are all rectangular is so that you can reliably hit them from the same distance. Attacks can be different shapes since the focus is on dodging.
And the Hollow Knight extra rectangle is the raised sword.

Fun fact about colliders from a gamedev perspective actually:
Circle / sphere colliders are the cheapest type on processing power! Broken down, all they really are is a distance check between their center point and other colliders :D
Shouldn't box colliders be cheaper, since you only have to compare a few numbers and don't have to do any arithmetic?
@@matiasgarciacasas558 So, the way that box colliders work is that they need to compare between multiple different points, seeing if they intercept, as well as the "lines" between the points.
I can't really explain it that well in a comment here without it ending up super long, but if you're interested, happycoding has a pretty good explanation on collision detection stuff plus some examples you can see in the browser (it is decently long though)
There's also some comparison videos on RUclips to see the performance between sphere / box / mesh colliders in Unity (which is the engine Hollow Knight runs on) if you're not as interested in the technical side of things, but at the end of the day, it takes a *lot* to actually make a 2D game struggle performance wise from colliders anyways :P
@@matiasgarciacasas558 both are pretty cheap. Box-box collision requires some conditional branching, where circle-circle requires some multiplies without branching. More annoying edge cases are box-circle collision ( due to the corners) or rotated box collision (much more complex than aligned box collision)
@@CensoredUsername_ branching for box-box case is not actually needed, vectorization is trivial as all is needed is point coordinate relation check and then ANDing all of those, even without SIMD it's possible. circle-circle might be costlier actually, as euclidian distance calculation requires power of two and square root operations, but those are intrinsic in modern cpus, so, both are pretty cheap in the end and of constant cost.

But that said, circle-circle collision doesn't need square root either, as you can instead just compare the squared distance with the squared sum of radii. As while multiply is very fast on modern processors, accurate square root is still significantly slower.

I assume the reason most colliders are square is for consistency. Imagine trying to consistently bounce on an enemy, but every time they move slightly horizontally it changes the timing of your interactions.
It'd turn a fun and simple mechanic into something more complex you have to train on.
It's also just easier to make a square hitbox for things.
