How insane! At what point does one fall into the 'overweight' category? A 5'2" client who weighs 200# will definitely appear different than a 5'11" weighing the same 200#. What criteria are these techs using to determine the cost? Measuring the girth of my calves? What about the 'apple' shaped client, whose round midsection vastly over masses their slender, shapely legs? Please, I'm not discriminating against apples, pears, bananas, loaves of bread... It seems like another way to fat shame someone, if you ask me. I hope that those who practice that type of humiliation/discrimination end up closing their doors for good. Maybe that client who appears overweight by someone's 'business' standard is rewarding him/herself with a mani/pedi for attaining a weight loss goal. Maybe that person felt uncomfortable before, and never indulged in something like that. Now they are made to feel less desirable than someone who appears healthier? Things like this BLOW MY MIND. Thank you Rita, for sharing. Definitely an eye opening bit of information.

To be honest i have seen this when i used to go the nail salons and actually i saw they charged elderly and male clients more when it came to pedicures so i ask the tech why do they charge more, she said cuz the man weighs more and the elderly has more issues to deal with. but like you said why not incoporate that extra cost in the price. I think is part of being able to execute good customer service , its going to make that type of clientelle feel shitty and insecure, clients come to the nail shop to relax and get away and not to mention help them feel good about themselves during the whole experience but with that type of attitude these shops are just going to loose a lot of business due to there lack of empathy , consideration and emotional intelligence.

Sure they have the right but would you charge more for extensions on a nail biter? Or would you sincerely want to help? The elderly and overweight sometimes have a harder time reaching their feet! Doing for others is worth more than mere gold.

Hi Jenna to answer your question yes a lot of nail techs charge more for nail biters because it is more work. I agree doing for others is more than gold we just have to decide our own standards of when we'll charge more for the work we do. Thanks for commenting.

Wow. Years of getting my nails done at many different salon's, this is something I have never heard of. From a customer's perspective, I think this is ridiculous. And, in my opinion, it is a form of discrimination. I'm a big girl. If I walk into a salon and see a sign that says they're charging extra for larger, older, gender, ECT....I'm telling someone off and then blowing up social media. I guess if I were a business owner, I might see it from a different perspective. But, knowing the kind of person that I am, I wouldn't even think about it! Smh.

what the actual hell!!! being fat (ie-me) makes no difference to my nails! you don't have to use more product am absolutely gobsmacked and here in the UK they would be fined for unwarranted discrimination, as a nurse, I don't get paid extra for nursing very obese patients and I have to do way more than lift a foot up!!! In fact I injured my back on a patient who was VERY obese and had to give up nursing because of it.

Charging more for services that go beyond the typical nail service does require an extra charge.
However, I think it's unprofessional to have such a charge for weight. There is a burden of stress lifting any one's leg, no matter what weight a person is. Then too you have the issue of an improper set up causing the tech to have to lift more than needed and bend over more than needed. A smaller nail tech may have a problem with any leg. Perhaps going the extra mile to get the right pedicure station set up will do wonders for both client and nail tech.
It's about customer service and finding out what you can do to be sure both the client and nail tech is comfortable servicing anyone.Things like; foot stools for clients to rest their legs and buying pedicure chairs that accommodate all sizes and having the right chair for nail techs. These things can make a persons weight a none issue. It will also make servicing everyone seamless, without the need to single people out.
There is a solution if a salon cares enough to explore it and put the money toward it. Just shows how much they are lacking in customer service and understanding how to provide a great experience for their clients.

can you do a video on how you charge you clients and when is that price talk brought up? Cause in all honesty how do you up charge for calluses if they walk in asking for a pedi and then what do you say. What are those conversations for different services.

I don't charge different prices for 40 bucks I can tackle most feet and still stay within my time range of an hour. Anything more than that then I will add on an addition cost that I will tell them up front after I look at their feet and then they can leave or stay. Hope this helps.

As a cosmetologist and a fat girl I’m triggered. I understand from a business standpoint they can charge that if they want but it’s in poor taste. I have done many pedis on big ol gals. I let their foot rest in the edge of the bath or my lap (with protective cover) to each his own but I’m not interested in making anyone feel less than for any reason. #hurryupjesus

You are a down to earth sweetie. I suppose I would charge more if the person had excessive dead skin which takes time to slough off. But if the person is larger but doesn't have excess dry skin and calluses. Then why charge more? I wish more nail techs were just like you. ❤

  • @orangemoon_8428

I can’t believe what I’m hearing, it is outrageous to charge per weight?!!
But I also think it is strange to charge more for a pedicure client if he/she has long(er) toe nails☺️.
Isn’t that why they come in at the first place? As a nailtech and pedicure I was taught to tell a client with lots of ‘issues’ up forehand I may not be able to do everything in the booked time and they need to book a followup appointment. This to teach the client not to wait to long in between appointments and schedule a new appointment after you are finished.
Win win for the client and the pedicure. They see you take you work seriously and you don’t want to cut corners with you clients as a professional. But ofcourse each country has there one way of working and I am certainly not the one to tell everyone how to work, just noticing different ways of working and charging☺️.
Finally, I think it is wonderful of you to ask attention for these cases and I hope it will make a change. 🤗
🎄May 2018 fill your heart with all you wish for!🎄

I find it so sad that people would discriminate like that. I don’t understand why it would cost more to pedi on a larger lady. You could always place cushion under the ladies leg if it is uncomfortable to lift. Just seems to me to be a nasty way of humiliating people. I have pedicured ladies of different sizes. I would never dream of embarrassing or ripping off a client like that.

At our salon we charge more for really calloused feet but there are some overweight people without very calloused feet. But for heavy feet we just use the pedi stool to hold the feet. I dont see a problem with that

I am a larger person also. I don’t get this charging more for pedicures for larger people. It’s not like they can’t use a foot rest for the client so I really don’t see where the "stress" comes in. I also sew so I do understand why larger clothes are more expensive. They are made of more material so you have the additional cost in raw materials. Larger clothing takes longer to sew as you have to spend more time manipulating the material around to sew it so you have an additional labor costs. So for clothing you can directly link the additional materials and labor costs to the increased retail price. But this just seems like something they came up with so they don’t have to do a job.

you made me laugh, it's the way you say things cheered me up. I would have to charge the same for every one . but I won't do feet I'm still learning I did not do ant nails for a year, and I'm finding it a bit harder starting again but I'm trying, I am 64. and I love nail are so I'm a pensioner and I pay for my lessons as I go along its expensive but I can work as I want to. when I want. that's the difference. so what would you have done in my predicament , I liked the way you explain things so I listen. and I would not do feet anyway.xxx

The best way to determine if something is discrimination is to substitute other words for the offending one(s). If it said "we charge more for men's pedicures, or elderly pedicures, or race of your choice pedicures, there wouldn't be any question. But trying to hide behind the owner's right to set their prices as they see fit is tantamount to condoning discrimination. Wrong is wrong no matter which group it happens to impact.

Supposedly one of the salons in question said that a larger woman broke one of their pedi chairs getting in and out of it and was attempting to charge her for the chair. And this is a way for them to recoup the money for insurance blah blah blah blah. But come to find out that the chair was falling apart prior. Supposedly in another salon a bigger woman supposedly fell and got hurt then sued and they want to discourage over weight women from getting pedicures so they're not sued again. Another shop an older woman slipped and fell and her family sued because 1 she fell, 2 it was a salon she had been going to for years and ended up with a nail fungus and a skin condition from using that scrapper that has a razor blade in it, that's illegal to use. Of course all NSS. These NSS Mega nail shops, put those pedicure chairs side by side where there is practically no room for a larger person, or even a regular sized person to safely get in and out half the time. They don't wipe down the water from the chairs and the floor half the time, making it a slip hazard for anyone. Yes, getting a mani or pedi is a luxury, but its nice to sit back and let someone else do your pedi. But we should feel safe at all times, no matter our size. I'm a big girl, and if I saw that sign I'd walk out. I would never charge extra based on a person's size.

I think it is incredibly insensitive but in my opinion (Discount salons) have terrible customer service to start with. I think if clients stopped frequenting these types of salons it would send the owners the message that this isn't acceptable. But most clients always want the cheapest set of nails and at the end of the day wont do anything about it..Makes me angry I wish ladies would start speaking up to these places when you see something wrong say something!

First, I’m so happy you’ve made a new video. Second, I am so sorry that this has to be a subject in any video. I am not a large person and I find this repugnant. I do have pustular psoriasis on my feet and I am treated like a leper even after I explain that it isn’t a contagious disease, it isn’t fungus etc. even then with language barriers, I can see me being discriminated against way before people whom are larger. Not that it’s right in my situation either but the idea that people are charged more for being overweight is ABSURD

As an aspiring nail tech, I couldn’t see charging more for this. There are ways of minimizing effort for all sorts of issues and being severely overweight is no different. Massage techniques, bolsters for the heel, etc. what in the heck is wrong with people?! Ofc they can do it legally, but they shouldn’t!!
