It is a setup used to stock the largest australian native fish predator called the murray cod. I have a few fingerlings in the fish tank with 2 silver perch, a little yabby and some fresh waterclams. I bend on the top of the tank to watch the fish. I spot one and see a multitude of white spots on the skin and fins of the fish! Yes this is the white spot disease…
What is “White Spot Disease”:
Also known as Ichthyophthirius, this parasite is very common. It is very different to the prawn white spot which is a virus. Ichthyophthirius has a complex life cycle. The visible spot on the fish is called “trophont”. It is encysted and feeding on the fish.
The impact on the fish:
This parasite is literally eating the energy of the fish. Even worst, the trophonts fixed on the fish gills are disturbing the capacity of the fish to absorb oxygen. If nothing is done, the parasite will multiply until the fish die of asphyxia.
How does the parasite spread and what is the life cycle?
This parasite has a complex life cycle. It can come from a variety of sources such as new fish, new aquatic plants… Once in the water, the larvae called “tomite” will fix on the fish surface. They can fix on the skin, the fins or the gills. They then form a cyst on the skin of the fish. When in a cyst form, the parasite is protected and can’t be killed. The cyst will remain attached to the fish for several days and then fall down. There it will fix itself on the bottom of the tank until it maturates and give births to thousands of little larvae. The whole cycle can take from 4 days at 25C to 30 days at 10C.
How can we kill the parasite?
The parasite is only vulnerable under the larvae form. A multitude of products are used in classic aquaculture and aquariums such as: Formalin, malachite green, methylene blue, potassium permanganate…
In aquaponics we will not use those products as it would kill our bacteria and possibly accumulate in the plants.
Instead we starve the parasite larvae by removing the fish from the aquaponics system. If they don’t find a fish in the few days following their birth, they will die.
In this video I show you how I remove the fish from the tank and increase the temperature in the tank to 25C to increase the parasite cycle and complete the full loop in less than a week. By leaving the tank in those conditions for 3 weeks without fish we can comfortably assume that all parasites will be dead.
Regarding the fish, I keep them in a separate tank with 5g/L of Salt and I change the tank every week to make sure new larvae will not appear.

*How do you deal with White Spot Disease?*
Faced it on my Goldies some time back had to isolate them.. prepare a salt and malechite green/1%hypo in water bath .. wait till I see froth formation on surface of water.. and then keep them in temporary aquarium seperate from aquaponics and monitor for a week before they look like they've recovered, great video and an excellent topic to discuss , cheers
Hi Jonathon, Good luck with your fish. The best way to handle white spot is to prevent it by giving all fish a salt bath before adding them to the fish tank. I use 1 cup (250 gm) to 10 liters
of tank water in a bucket or tub with vigorous aeration for 5 to 10 minutes. Then place them into the tank. This strength salt bath will kill the embedded trophonts and all of the white spot in the water. This will prevent introducing white spot into the system.
Thanks Jim, very good! What are you growing ATM?
Hi Jonathon, gonna take your advice on the new rainbow trout. I will treat them with salt water for about 5-10min and then put it in the isolation tank. should I add some salt water to isolation tank too? and how often should I give them salt baths? Thank you for your help! awesome videos by the way!!
Great natural non chemical method of dealing with disease in fish.👍. Let us know how it turns out.
Thanks Fred, Where are you from?
Melbourne Aquaponics I am from Canada. Or should I say CanaBa. Home of the biggest marijuana growing industry in the world.
Myself, I am not a pot user or grower. But I think that eventually a lot canabis will be grown using aquaponics especially when the growers explain that chemical additives are not used as they are in hydroponics. Not sure how far Australia is from legalization but I am sure your skills will be in big demand.
What are your thoughts on a "hospital" isolation tank where you can treat the fish with methylene blue. Keeping the chemicals out of the Aquaponics system but treating the disease more aggressively? Then return the fish after the become disease free. I've had aquarium fish in the past and treating with MB always lead to good results clearing the disease.
Yes Jeffery, in worse case scenario it's the best option :)
What type of fish are you growing?
For how much time do you put the fish in salt?
Why are the fish in the dark from what I can see, I might be wrong
How to increase the temperature of aquaponic water? Raj
Can i use table salt
have you put salt into main fish tank? with 3g/1L water?
Yes it's a possibility to decrease the osmosis pressure on the fish but it is controversial since it can have a negative impact on the plants
Feed your fish garlic. It works.
Really? Never heard of this technique. generally a sick fish doesn't eat but if early enough they may. On what species and for what disease have you obtained results?
@@AquaponicsRevolution Hello mate. Great vids by the way! I have improved my aquaponic system because of your vids. I am not the best guy to ask because i steal my information from other youtubers lol... It works on mostly tropical aquarium fish. It makes the fish "sweat" which drops the ick off, it hates it. I have done it a couple of times and it works like a treat but the weather in the uk might have an impact but i am not 2 sure... also there is many ways it hide the garlic so they dont no 😎 let me know if you would like to see my system, i would love to have some advise. Ps i am glad france isnt in the rugby world cub final anymore lol 😂
Garlic is for chickens
