It was a festival of Vamanan which is not at all cultural but absolutely religious. Thrikkakara vamana moorthy temple is where the rituals are happening for 28 days. And thiruvona thoni (Boat) going it's journey from Kumaranelloor to Aaranmula as a part of rituals and hindu beliefs. So how can it be a cultural festival. It was a plan of Kerala CM during early 60s to make the ritual to get more attention from the people. So they used Onam for tourism and made belief from the schools that it's Kerala's authentic cultural festival. Actually it's not if we just take the history before 1947, there was nothing called Onam as cultural festival. But it was there in such a minor Hindu community. You wont understand it, if you are grown and brought up in kerala you will understand what i mean. In kerala i ahve never faced a question like so you are a muslim. But i face it every time i see someone in bangalore. People have a perception that muslims should look and feel like this. Every Keralite will have same vibe. Theres a staying that you can take a Keralite out of kerala but you cant take Kerala out of a Keralite. Everyone has there belief but its kept a personal choice when you are out in the street people are Keralites and thats all that anyone cares.
