You are right. Culturally too, North India and South India are very different. In most respects, North India is culturally more like Pakistan than like South India. Only religion is different between North India and Pakistan, but their attitude to life, including aggression and disrespect towards other human beings, violence against women, etc. is very similar. By contrast culturally, South India is much more focussed on economic development, education, health, etc., and in general the people in the South are more cultured and polite, and respect other human beings, regardless of their background (as compared to the North Indians who judge people based on their superficialities). The way things are going, eventually I fear South India and North India will split up and become two separate countries.

And the same migrants complaint against Traffic, high house rentals and don't respect the Bangalore culture or does get involved with local culture and live in their own islands. Roads cannot be extended every month, as Bangalore adds 20,000 people every month.

Telangana will not have serious water & power problems for the next 40 years.
In Telangana, the development is almost fully concentrated in Hyderabad. Having rich individuals improves the rank as well as per capita figures. However it does not necessarily mean improvement in the lives of people. We have to read economic development along with human development. Afterall, our aim is to have everyone benefited from development.
Telangana is doing well in terms of social indices as well. We are top in household water supply, sanitation, low infant mortality rate. But literacy still needs improvement.

The dip of TN's GDP contribution between 1967 to 1991 was the result of Union government's neglect in terms of allocation of funds and developmental projects. Successive congress government's were not able to digest the fact that one state has realized it's own identity and it is not easily subjugated. Similar things are happening under the last 3 BJP governments.

The analysis on Tamil Nadu is not in line with what actually happened. After Dravidian parties took over and Congress was was reduced to insignificance from 1967 onwards, Tn suffered decades of neglect by the centre. However in the 90s coalition at the centre changed all that. Now starting 2014!again TN is facing neglect by centre. But TN has learned to grow inspire of this neglect.

Auto sector is in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka because of ports. Haryana has only those started in eighties. If we really want UP, Bihar & MP to catch up it is by giving incentive for service companies to move to hinterland.

The biggest highlight is the trend from 60 to 90 and thereafter Southern states were below national average in 60-90. That's the image still North people carry for South and dont accept the fact that South has moved up now. Many folks who come to Blr still think that north cities are better(my first hand experience). They are so wrong about that. PS I am not from Karnataka but Maharashtra. Love the fact that Maharashtra has always been above average but they need to fix their issue before they start seeing reduction in their share UP kept falling. If you see there is slight revival in last 5-6 years Bihar was in continuous decline and last 10-12 years its stable. So i would say they can catch up. Politically my state Madhya Pradesh did everything right. Had stable govt for over long period of time. Didnt involved much in mandal nor kamandal. Still it is backward. I feel it is more like if state has major urban center. They were able to grow. MP didnt had a big urban center neither focussed to grow one. The CM we had focussed more agriculture.
We Tamilnadu people vote for Education, Economic Growth, Infrastructure, Health and Social Justice. But in North India most of the people are voting in Religious angle.
North indians and east Indians are clueless we even today on why South relatively grew inspite of zero support and anti South stance of union governments. Its because of one reason know as social equality and inclusive growth. Explaining it simply, if in a house there are 10 children and if the father discards 8 and takes care of 2. After 20 years only the 2 will earn and rest 8 would have failed in life and the home would be poor. . Now if the same father had taken care of all the 10, he would have produced 10 earning members and the house will be rich. This is what is happening. North ignored the 80% of the obc+sc-st and the oppressed. Only the 20% brahmins + other forward castes enjoyed. So the entire states like UP, Bihar, MP etc, only these 20% contribute to economy is a meaningful way. Whereas in south the people working traditional jobs like barbers, pot makers, sewerage workers have moved on to become high income earning people because of inclusivity and contribute to economy.

The reason for Tamil Nadu's lag before the boom was because the Dravidian parties were laying the ground for it. The improvements in educational opportunities and policies empowering various castes eventually powered growth when economy liberalized. It continues to benefit from this diversified growth. If not for the lag in IT sector and slowdown of textiles in the last decade TN would have retained it's educated youth who are now going to Bangalore and low skill workers from moving to services jobs. The current push for manufacturing will hopefully help the low skill worker families and built a strong local consumer economy.

My hopothesis is this doesn't paint the accurate economic picture, I would argue, high industrial development around and in certain pockets in certain states led to the some states manifesting above national average PCI but in contrast peripherical districts of those states have not benefited from this fruit of growth of the states. For example western Maharashtra has industrial clusters therefor economically developed, but the same is not true for middle and east Maharastra. Kerala should have done much better economically but for the anti-private industry attitude of the present Communist government. Given the large amount of inflow of foreign exchange from overseas Malayalees, a government more hospitable to small medium private business would have registered much better economic performance.
I think the changing point was in late 90ties when a foreign car company was about to be built it's manufacturing plant and communist part took protest too far. It ended up in tamil nadu and boomed the car manufacturing cluster in tamil nadu that was a big miss. Again benefit of communist party is human development index is highest I wonder in Kerala. You are right. Culturally too, North India and South India are very different.
In most respects, North India is culturally more like Pakistan than like South India. Only religion is different between North India and Pakistan, but their attitude to life, including aggression and disrespect towards other human beings, violence against women, etc. is very similar.
By contrast culturally, South India is much more focussed on economic development, education, health, etc., and in general the people in the South are more cultured and polite, and respect other human beings, regardless of their background (as compared to the North Indians who judge people based on their superficialities). The way things are going, eventually I fear South India and North India will split up and become two separate countries.

You are comparing 848sqkm of Bangalore to 164sqkm of chennai, which is flawed analysis IMO. If you include the full CMA region, GDP share of 25%-30% still makes it skewed. That said, TN remains a benchmark for the number of tier 2 cities developed possibly alongside Guj. But all south states have a decent number of T2 cities with Vizak, Vijawada in AP, a number of them in Kerala, Mangalore, Mysore, Hubli in Ktaka

And the same migrants complaint against Traffic, high house rentals and don't respect the Bangalore culture or does get involved with local culture and live in their own islands. The crux of Dravidian idelology is that religion - ANY religion - should NOT play a very big role in public life and should only be contained within one's personal life. Tamil Nadu is almost 90% Hindu lol, even more than the rest of India and obviously its going to manifest as a way to stop overly castist Hindu politics form the mid 20th century. After Dravidian parties took over and Congress was was reduced to insignificance from 1967 onwards, Tn suffered decades of neglect by the centre.
However in the 90s coalition at the centre changed all that. Now starting 2014!again TN is facing neglect by centre. But TN has learned to grow inspire of this neglect.

North ignored the 80% of the obc+sc-st and the oppressed. Only the 20% brahmins + other forward castes enjoyed. So the entire states like UP, Bihar, MP etc, only these 20% contribute to economy is a meaningful way. Whereas in south the people working traditional jobs like barbers, pot makers, sewerage workers have moved on to become high income earning people because of inclusivity and contribute to economy.
In the north only from brahmins and takurs go for higher education abroad like the USA and Australia Whereas in the south everyone goes including Large no from SCs. In the North still the feudal system exists

The reason for Tamil Nadu's lag before the boom was because the Dravidian parties were laying the ground for it. The improvements in educational opportunities and policies empowering various castes eventually powered growth when economy liberalized.
It continues to benefit from this diversified growth. If not for the lag in IT sector and slowdown of textiles in the last decade TN would have retained it's educated youth who are now going to Bangalore and low skill workers from moving to services jobs.
The current push for manufacturing will hopefully help the low skill worker families and built a strong local consumer economy.

1) Gujarat is doing very well and is considered a BJP lab by media, which is a hole in the logic here
2) West Bengal is a considered a dream of left liberals and NOT affected by mandal, mandir and we all know where it stands today
3) one can add more exception states like Karnataka, Maharashtra etc. where mandir/mandal exist and they did well.
the problem with media is, they have a pattern to publish, that they think is right and try to justify it with some data.
Big question to ask is, why were whole country growing at 3-4 percent for 45 years from 1947 when there were NO Mandal, Mandir ? there lies the issue. of course, lutyen media does not want to go back to that era.

My hopothesis is this doesn't paint the accurate economic picture, I would argue, high industrial development around and in certain pockets in certain states led to the some states manifesting above national average PCI but in contrast peripherical districts of those states have not benefited from this fruit of growth of the states. For example western Maharashtra has industrial clusters therefor economically developed, but the same is not true for middle and east Maharastra. I understand here the context was socio-political enviorment but still, there is some degree of truth to what I am saying, we need to understand what are the factors at play here.
I am from north eastern state of Assam …we are doing much better under BJP government.All the north eastern states are growing rapidly in last 10 years. We used to be treated as backyard of West Bengal and colony of congress party . Kerala should have done much better economically but for the anti-private industry attitude of the present Communist government. Given the large amount of inflow of foreign exchange from overseas Malayalees, a government more hospitable to small medium private business would have registered much better economic performance.
I think the changing point was in late 90ties when a foreign car company was about to be built it's manufacturing plant and communist part took protest too far. It ended up in tamil nadu and boomed the car manufacturing cluster in tamil nadu that was a big miss. Again benefit of communist party is human development index is highest I wonder in Kerala. It's all about balance, without the remittance from NRI this could not have happened with such strong anti private sentiments. Which is ironic as in the end they are working in private corporation just in different country. Which also created the present low employment rates in Kerala. So many well educated people but no jobs.

And there is a misconcpetion that there is no induatries in kerala. 23% of kerala GDP coming from induatries sector. And there is IT and startup sector is growing in kerala. IT exports reached 25000 crores now.

You have not discussed about the classic case of West Bengal. Bengalis always claim that there are intellectually superior to other states. Go to any premier institute and they are in huge number, and in fact some of my Bengali colleagues say that Bangla is the official language in which science has to be discussed in our country. As a Tamilian I never agreed to it. No one can beat a Bengali in Parochial thinking. The economic data is a testament to their illusions.
