Yes I had to remove the grate and slide open the heat deflector. I have seen also where some of done a mod on the lex with a steel rod so you can move the plate without having to take off the grate.

I got a spatula that's long enough that I could slide the plate by putting it they grates.

When I did this one it was in the cooler months. But it took around 2hrs. Depending on your elements it may be more or less.
