    Today I react, and review one of the most highly praised albums of the year, Titled "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" by Fiona Apple. None of that matters however, as I am going into this album with no bias, expecting to get nothing. Does the album live up to the hype? Is it a mastapieceeeee? Or does it fall short of its greatness? Watch to find out!

    several songs - most notably "ladies" and "newspaper" are about her witnessing other women fall into the same abusive, toxic relationships with men that she's fallen into. she's desperate to save these people who she knows she can't save, because you can't help an abused person until they want to be helped. so she just had to wait and watch until it was over.

      I love Fiona, but knowing the themes of her albums all the way back to the mid-90's, I get the feeling that she is likely toxic too. Which is ok. We all are to some degree. But if similar situations repeat over and over and over for you, then it's likely that you hold some responsibility too.

      @@dickmonkey-king1271 who says it happened repeatedly? maybe she’s just revisiting 2 or 3 intense relationships. That’s not a lot to me.

      @bwimmin6626 Год назад +10

      @@dickmonkey-king1271 I get the impression that most of the 'toxic' situations she talked about on this album are from when she's active in the music industry and is sort of a reflection of that time. There's a difference in the way she talked about her more recent relationships, I find them to be more melancholic and self-deprecating (and framed not as toxic but just how things are) whereas there's more anger and bitterness from her older ones, considering she was really young in Hollywood during that time, it's not surprising. Saddening, yes but not surprising
      So no, I don't think similar situations repeat over and over but more so she's recalling back what she saw then and realizing similar situations among other women.

    For Her has got to be one of my all time favorite songs now, especially given the sentiment and what Fiona has said about the “you raped me” line... “some people need to say it out loud in order to understand that’s what happened to them. And my hope is that maybe some women and men will be able to sing along with that line and allow it to tell the truth for them.” It’s really beautiful, the fact you’ve been hurt and taken advantage of can be a really hard thing to come to terms with. It’s oddly comforting to hear someone say it so bluntly.

    Melon's review reflects how subjective music is. His issues with the album (its roughness, its chanting, its high drama storytelling, the songs having shifting and unpredictable structures, its dependence on drums) are partly why so many find it intriguing. I mean, the dude had "For Her" as one of his least favorite tracks on the album, which is a completely different reaction from Brad. It hints to how varying musical instincts are. While this album is semi dense, and it’s almost like some fusion of jazz and folk and punk and hip-hop, which is not gonna suit everyone's tastes. There are multiple reasons why this is getting a ton of praise and has a lot of people who love it, but if this isn’t your sway it’s no big deal. I do appreciate Cute Brad’s enthusiastic, befuddled, nuanced reaction. The video reactions for this album so far have mostly been lame and/or shallow. This is the only great one.

    • @ggguitar.

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 4 года назад +94

      Melon’s review was problematic though. The words and phrases he chose often felt condescending. While he didn’t seem to comprehend the album’s themes or storytelling. It was a poorly researched and not well thought out review, especially considering the album’s hype and acclaim, Fiona's status and eight year absence, and his desire to be a “respected music critic” beyond his social media fanboys. He didn’t articulate what he liked and didn’t like about the album. It didn’t even seem like he spent much time with the album. It almost felt like he wanted to simply say, “this is unpleasant noise featuring a ranting woman”. I actually would have respected that more than the nonsense he came up with. However, hating on him for not loving the album makes no sense. Everyone’s allowed to have their opinion. And this is a very idiosyncratic, sometimes demanding album. While how some people reacted to his "review" made them come off like babies and just gave him more attention and power and pumped up his following (a decent percentage of which is made up of douches). But I can’t truly defend him, because his half-hearted take on the album and his reaction to the backlash did highlight a lack of professionalism, a lack of verbal skills and a lack of credentials.

    I'm a huge fan of Fiona's but the first time I listened there were moments when I wondered if the sound was not recorded or mixed well...which made the realization the raw sounds were intentional to express a point or to give depth to the song extra satisfying. This album is so unique, it flips the expectations of the music industry on it's ass, in a wholy unexpected and prolific way. What I hear loudest in Fetch the Bolt Cutters is Fiona taking her power back and using it to promote betterment for anyone who will truly listen. So thanks for doing just that!

    I really enjoyed this video.
    "Ladies" is by far my favorite track on the album, as far as I'm concerned Fiona talks about how women are often pushed to bicker and argue with eachother over men they have shared relationships with. She makes a point that women should not compete, instead they should accept that each relationship has unique and special aspects to it. I think the repetition of the word 'ladies' has to do with this competition between women being so prevelant IRL and in media, (who was the better girlfriend, who was more beautiful, etc.). The 'dress in the closet' lyric is pretty interesting, instead of wanting to keep the 'dress', even though it really isn't hers anymore, she let's go and offers it the next 'good woman'.

So like here take my stuff and do what you can with it because I know the pain you’re about to suffer. Etc. First thought that came to me is like my friends and myself having this paranoia of war and if we were to have to fight in it. Even when you are giving CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM (i feel like some people often forget this) to some of my favourite artists/bands i can still enjoy the video and in some cases even agree with some of the points you make, i watched one of your recent videos where you seemed to not be feeling so well about yourself, not feeling like it is enough, but if a viewer such as myself, who lives on the complete other side of the planet can enjoy your content, you're surely doing something right eh? She used Brazilian rhythms, percussion. It reminded me a bit of how Paul Simon did so in his album, The Rhythm of the Saints. Although, they are starkly different albums. This aside, I told my friend that she would hate the album on the first go round. It's like throwing a bucket of sound into your ears until the splashes go away and it all becomes channeled into a focused stream that reaches the base of your spine. At the second listen, I was hooked. Otherwise, some of the composition/arrangements remind me of Kate Bush's album, The Dreaming. Not in sound, of course.

    A friend of mine has a unique way of scoring albums: 9 is really really good but not perfect. 10 is perfect. 11 is something that isn't perfect bc it is HUMAN, it exceeds perfection by bringing up those human imperfections that we have.
    She previously gave an 11 to two albums:
    1. Yeezus - so uneven... rises and falls, gold vs shit but when it's good then like lou reed said, Kanye is on another planet than other artists..
    2. Blackstar - some of it rushed but that's part of the point. And the better parts leapfrogged contemporary music.
    This is her 3rd 11, bc it is wonderful and stimulating and minimalist and experimental and thought evoking - but so so human.
    I fully agree on all three.

      Hear me out... what if she's addressing it to herself? I think that could explain the first few lines really well. And it would line up with the ideas of self-confidence in Shameika and Fetch the bolt cutters. After experiences like the toxic relationship she describes in Newspaper, self-love would be an act of rebellion worthy of this album. Maybe I'm projecting, but I see this as a feminist rejection of the judgement of a patriarchal society, and it makes me happy!

    I wonder if you would like Tori Amos. She is also a piano playing singer-songwriter, but she has a lot of strengths. Started playing by ear at 2, accepted on scholarship to Peabody Conservatory at age 5, has synesthesia (she sees music as light structures). Basically a female Mozart. She writes piano music like she's writing for guitar. Lyrically, she's very stream of consciousness mixed with metaphor. She's on another plane mentally. Her best albums are Boys for Pele (harpsichord metal & haunting ballads about finding her own fire after wanting to sacrifice the men in her life to the volcano goddess), To Venus & Back (lots of experimentation with electronica), & Night of Hunters (a classical song cycle...kin in spirit to Boys for Pele). She has 14 albums, I think. And a ton of phenomenal b-sides.
    Sorry for the book. As a fan since 94 I have a lot crammed in my head.

    I enjoyed watching you experience this in real time. You mentioned several times that you don’t listen to singer-songwriters, and so you may never have listened to Tori Amos’s “Boys for Pele.” You should. The song compositions and arrangements are not as varied within tracks, but they are among tracks, and it’s as much of a potent emotional and intellectual roller coaster. Of course, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple are entirely different artists with little in common aside from extraordinary musicianship, voices and lyrics, but these are my two favorite entirely avant-garde albums and I would strongly encourage you to give Boys for Pele a chance if you haven’t done so.

    I think the gravity thing is a play on words. She means gravity as in seriousness, not gravity as in science. It's like she's saying they started off weightless, but then as the relationship progressed things became more heavy. But that's just my interpretation.

    you gotta listen to her first album tidal, she wrote it when she was just a teenager and it’s so blunt and amazing.

    This is one of the most entertaining and engaging reaction videos I've ever seen. I've been curious about this album and now I definitely feel I need to give it a serious listen. Thanks for posting.

    Omg ya look like Paolo Nutini. And lol at your expressions at all the experimental sounds. I’ve been a Fiona Apple fan since 1996! Fiona never disappoints.

      He had it as his third album of last year. So, he clearly still really liked it. I think he took away the 10 and made it 9 something though. Honestly, I think the douches and the fact that album was so acclaimed made him pull back his love for album. But he still has unabashed praise for it.
