@sherthetruth Largo was a digital bonus track. So the slbu actually ends with Hot Knife. Her first two albums are my favorites, but she has no bad albums. This is actually my least favorite album of hers. We may have very different taste though. I did get to see her live in 1996 when she was 19 at my old College of New Jersey, touring her first album. She was album perfect. She ended with a cover of Angel by Jimi Hendrix.
@@amgm1996 EM is a borderline great album and one of the few best released from its year. It just doesn’t sound as individual as her others. Tidal is the only album of hers I consider to be “okay” and even that has standout moments. And it of course includes her biggest hit.
@@voxpopuli6612EM is WILDLY underrated. I always want to say it’s my favorite album because so many of my favs are on there, but When The Pawn makes it very hard to say that solidly. lol.
When she sings about her breasts busting open she’s talking about letting down her armor to relax. She references the same concept on her first album in a song called “pale September. She also references it in a song that she recorded in one take called “Parting Gift”. I think Extraordinary Machine is forever her most underrated album. And there are two versions of it.
your interpretation of the airplane wing line on Daredevil is actually exactly where her third album Extraordinary Machine got its title from - she is an extraordinary machine because she takes all the negative shit and all the horrible stuff and it goes through her and comes out as something good (her music)!
Fiona isn't just a lyrical genius but also a poetical genius!!! She KNOWS how to express her emotions through writing songs while using complex and diverse vocabulary, its mind-blowing!! Every album in her discography can easily be her best album literally I definitely suggest that you listen or react to her whole discography, trust me you do not want to miss out .
Yeah, Largo is the only Fiona Apple song that I skip. By far my least favorite song by her, which is so strange to me that it’s on this album, because it’s one of my favorites. I feel like it just doesn’t go with the rest of the album for me.
The part of Jonathan you like, Fiona actually spoke about in an interview! It's about how her relationship with Jonathan Ames, and how he took her on a trip to Coney Island (as mentioned in the start) and she was jealous and bitter because he used to take his past girlfriends on trips to Coney Island too but he ended up giving her a lovely experience on the trip and he was truly kind to her, therefore the "If she's part of the reason you are how you are, she's alright with me"
I go back and forth whether this or When the Pawn is my favorite Fiona album. Love your reaction, and I really appreciate the in-depth discussion of the lyrics! Fiona's such an amazing lyricist, and it's awesome hearing someone dig into the language.
It’s SO hard to choose between this and When The Pawn. They’re extremely close for me, but When The Pawn may have to win just a smidge because of if I Know, Limp, Fast As You Can, and Paper Bag. I could just keep going really.
Living in Brazil, one of my biggest heartbreaks is knowing I'll probably never see her live too. I started listening to her when she release The Idler Wheel and saw that she had huge gaps between albuns, my heart sank. After reading more about her I though "great, just like me to be in love with an artist that is super reserved and drops music when she feels it's ready, and she almost never feels it's ready"
Just a note: The original release ended with Hot Knife. To me, that's the true end, and seals it as a perfect album. Fiona has been the artist of my life since "Criminal" dropped. I was 11, and immediately, and forever, obsessed. I literally grew up listening to her music, each album released during rather intense and/or transformative periods of my life (Idler Wheel dropped during the first year of my first born daughter's life, for example). And she's absolutely responsible for a number of words being added to my vocabulary during that time lol. I have my personal rankings when it comes to albums, and the songs therein, as any fan does (Cannot *wait* for When the Pawn...)but she literally does not miss. She consistently pushes her craft and creativity to new heights, with every new (and sadly too rare) release. Almost 30 years of inventive, relatable yet precise, painfully vulnerable and equally cathartic, songwriting. Her piercing poetry, impeccable vocal control and top tier musicianship, are simply unmatched. I haven't been so excited for a video drop in a long time. Loving this journey for you; thanks for sharing. 🙂
I’m so glad you’re getting into Fiona!! She’s one of my favorite artists ever and truly one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Her voice is expressive in a way most artists simply are not. I really do wish more people knew how much of a genius she is.
She hasn't made a bad album.... I like Fetch the Bolt Cutters best, because she's at her best when she just doesn't GAF about being commercial. Idler Wheel is maybe my second favorite, for much the same reason. The way she turns a phrase, often with a metaphor that works in a couple of different ways, is amazing... She is fearlessly personal and FIERCELY vulnerable and her expressive voice matches her words.
My favorite album of all TIME!!!! Seeing you just amazed by her songwriting and vocals is so real because that's exactly how I feel when I listen to her. Fiona is a lyrical genius and this album evokes so many emotions out of me. Sometimes I feel like crying when hearing certain songs and I also feel angry for her because of some of the stuff she has been through. You can feel everything she's saying so viscerally because of how strong her writing is and how powerful her voice is. My favorite artist, person.
I love that you're talking about this album. Such a good one, and love her scribbled artwork in the lyric booklet that came with the CD. Thank you for this!

Haha I'm glad I'm not alone in this! Also, EM is the only album I have listened to... it was maybe 14 years ago though! It was after everyone told me to check her out (because I loved regina spektor). I loved the title track and Waltz but I don't quite remember the rest. Maybe I'll revisit when I'm done. Thanks for listening!
To me, Every Single Night and Newspaper from Fetch the Bolt Cutters are sister songs, the first describes the struggle, and the second describes a specific instance of this struggle, where a burning thought burns through her all night, and like the song, in the end disperses like a fever breaks. In Periphery, there is some metaphor there, she speaks a lot about worth, and the line, I don't appreciate, people who don't appreciate. This could be exactly what you think, people who don't appreciate her. The other possible meaning here is that things "appreciate" in their value, if they don't appreciate, they lose worth, these people lose worth to her. The first line of Anything We Want, "My cheeks were reflecting the longest wavelength", the longest wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum is red, Fiona is artistic, poetic, but also kind of a science geek, and that's really cool.
I love when you listen to albums like these because it's so nice to revisit them with your perspective and appreciate the things I missed that you bring up, love your vids!!!
This was so friggen enjoyable watching you hear these songs, and then your breakdown of the lyrics. I was so excited for you to get to Anything We Want, and your reaction did not disappoint. lol.
the original release ended on Hot Knife, but Largo was later added as a bonus track on streaming services - so if you take Hot Knife as the true ending, it wraps up really well
Hey there. I'm from Brazil. I've listened to that album and it amazes me how Fiona has grown on me. I'm not so familiar with her previous albuns and I remember so well when she was a big hit on MTV, "criminal" being her most well-know song. I was not so into her songs though . However, as she grew older somehow her work (idler wheel) resonated with my own feelings towards romantic relationships, and anxiety. More importantly, I love the way she talks about abstract things like emotions, whether dark or positive and turns into beautiful songs. I totally feel you.
There’s truly no comparison. Fiona Apple is the best songwriters of this generation, and even calling her that falls short for what great of an artist she is. No adjective can describe what she embodies.
I am so late to this comment section but I LOVEEEEEEE largo, it encompasses how she has people and isn’t alone despite the theme of the album being self isolation. I feel like it’s so introspective and a good node to counter the isolated themes
I have two things to say! 1) when the pawn is my favorite album of all time, so excited for you to do that one 2) you should listen to Ys by Joanna Newsom! She's the epitome of dense instrumentation and verbosity, she has such beautiful language
I would love to see more Fiona reactions from you. Just a tip - if you put the time stamps in the description of your video RUclips will automatically add the sections on the video.

Ps: you’re right Largo doesn’t really feel like the last song but it’s actually a bonus track (so technically hot knife is the closing one).
Love this reaction! Looking forward to you checking out Fiona's "When the Pawn" album. I think it's her best.
