      Eh, for a first listen not really. It’s slow and predictable. The more you listen to it the more you like it, though. It worms its way into your brain.

      @@j.prt.979 i really liked it in the first listen, i think that just because its ween doesn't mean it needs to be weird af or mindblowing all the time

      @@artursvgames I like Tried and True. It might be my favorite on the album other than maybe Long Night and Chocolate Town. It has that lovely folk mysticism to it, like REM had on their first LP Murmur in 1983, but not in a similar way though. I completely disagree with Brad.

      @@artursvgames Oh, I agree. I liked it first listen too, but my appreciation for it has only grown. However, it *is* slow and predictable (not necessarily negatives, but from a certain perspective they can be perceived as such), and I imagine a first viewer will often take the wrong impression.

    Happy Colored Marbles is actually such a sad song since the happy colored marbles resemble antidepressants and I find it hella brilliant how the chorus sounds happy and the verse sounds like depression. I guess the instrumental break down literally resembles a mental breakdown as well, maybe resembling the down sides of taking antidepressants which can be the anxiety and insomnia.

    • @michaelvessel4604
      @michaelvessel4604 3 года назад +7

      Since both that and Zoloft are about trying to medicate the dark thoughts in your mind away with antidepressants, I really do wonder if Gener was going through some very serious depression while recording the album and tried to use as many medications as he could to drown it all out. Those songs really do sound like they come from a lot of experience.

    I think that the first two Ween albums are much more rewarding. "God Ween Satan" and "Pod" are their best albums and have "that" which you say is missing from Mollusk. After the second album they released Pure Guava which was much more tame and normal in comparison to the first two (still a pretty good album though). And the albums continued to be more and more normal filled entirely with formal pop rock songs (Chocolate and Chese, Mollusk). They were more entertaining to me when they were making these "half-songs" comedic/sound sketches instead.

    Kinda disappointing you didn't like Tried and true (my favorite of the album). That's why I'm afraid to go deep on weird music like black midi and swans. Because I think I wouldn't have so much fun listening to straight pop and rock anymore.

    • @harrisonjr98
      @harrisonjr98 3 года назад +5

      Don’t be afraid of going deep on weird music! I think you’ll find that there are some situations that more challenging music fits perfectly, and some that more straightforward music fits. Music is not objectively better or worse on its technical merit alone, so much of it is the feeling and passion of the artist which is nearly intangible.

    • @CaioSigilo
      @CaioSigilo 3 года назад

      @@harrisonjr98 yeah, I actually prefer weird and alternative music nowadays than the top 10 charts, but I don't really go deep on it because I feel like it's not for me, but who knows, maybe I will in a near future

      The only thing I've learned from listening to more abstract music is to appreciate all forms of sound and composition. I can love a radio hit song or a Taylor Swift tune just as much as some avant-garde free jazz. Everything on the spectrum interests me.

    Hey, Brad, love these reactions. I've found a lot of interesting new music I wouldn't normally look for through your videos. And honestly your insights into what makes music interesting to you have been really helpful towards my own musical endeavours, which I hope I can share with you some day. I feel like I have a pretty good sense of your tastes by now and there are a few albums I've been thinking of that I think you would really appreciate.
    - To Bring You My Love and/or Is This Desire? - PJ Harvey
    - Red - King Crimson
    - Grace - Jeff Buckley
    P.S. Massive QotSA fan as well so hoping for more of those reactions, but I'm posting this just to bring some attention to some albums you might otherwise miss out on. Keep up the great work!
