The SpongeBob creator, Stephen Hillenburg, contacted Ween after the Mollusk was released and had them write 'Loop de Loop.' Of ‘Loop de Loop’, Dean Ween wrote: “I got a call a long time ago from a marine biologist that said he wanted to start a cartoon inspired by Ween’s album The Mollusk. His name was Steve Hillenburg and his idea was to create a Bugs Bunny type cartoon on the bottom of the ocean floor."
Loving your videos! A fun fact - The Mollusk is actually referenced in an early Spongebob episode (spongebob tells gary to mind his wandering eye, little mollusk).
Little easter egg btw, the melody on cold blows the wind that plays at 16:43, they ended up reusing for the verse melody of The Argus from quebec. It took me way too long to notice
Just found you from your Quebec review! Since you liked It's Gonna Be (Alright), I bet you'll really like White Pepper. If you wanna get into the early stuff I'd start with Pure Guava. Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy) is one of their best songs ever imo
Of the Pumpkins albums, I would recommend Gish. It’s great insight into what was going on in 1991. 91 was an incredibly important year for alt rock. Pearl Jam (ten), Nirvana ( never mind) Soundgarden ( badmotorfinger), RHCP ( blood sugar sex magik) temple of the dog ( self titled) and Primus ( sailing the seas of cheese). The all greatly effected “rock” music.
I love how ween can make you take an album like the mollusk seriously when you got tracks like "waving my dick in the wind". Also on the last song my theory is that the dude is "one of them" because he joined their crew - unable to let go of his girlfriend he'd rather join them and watch from the sideline as another dude who's better than him in every way gets with her.
Tom Waits, my dude! Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Frank's Wild Years and Bone Machine are a few essentials from a very expansive discography. It may be a little difficult to digest at first but he's truly one of the greats, in my opinion. 🙂
You're doing all my favorite albums as of late. The Mollusk is legendary. So many artists recognize and are influenced by the insane bravery and eclecticism Ween is known for and this album made it clear for all to see. Keep it up man I love you. Mutilated Lips is an all-time top tier Ween. So fucking brown. You should check out the fan-compiled album of Quebec outtakes called Caesar! It's half tracks that didn't make it (Things You Already Know and I'm Wide Open are awesome) and half demos of tracks that did (Chocolate Town's demo has some beautiful vocal harmonies that didn't make it on the studio album. They're all hella solid songs (well, most of them lol). Also just like check out their various b-sides scattered across the early internet that have been uploaded to YT. Kim Smoltz, Beacon Light, Who Dat?, The Argus Pt. 2, the list goes on. Don't sleep on Shinola Vol. 1. It's _technically_ a compilarion album, but it's all old songs that didn't make it on older albums, but they re-recorded them and made a "b-sides and rarities" album that kicks ass. Yeah on early Ween albums, don't bother dissecting lyrics. They were high as fuck on all kinds of shit. Fool's errand unless you also love huffing scotchgard and can tap into the same schizo-realm they made their first 3 albums on. Usually you can tell if the lyrics are gonna be meaningful or nonsense though lol If you're taking recs, I've got few if that's cool. I notice you do a lot of indie/alt stuff so this might be kinda out of that wheelhouse but I figured I'd throw em in. Dance Gavin Dance is a pretty cool band if you don't mind unclean vocals (kinda screamo/growl, but their vocalist is pretty unique in the scene). Their genre is Post-Hardcore, but their guitarist's skills and writing is so prolific and unique that fans classify them (and bands that work with them/play in the same scene) as Swancore. The guitarist's last name is Swan lol. Crazy technical guitar, insane clean vocals, badass unclean vocals (two vocalists), and kickass groove. They love switching things up mid-song and injecting groove into some metal/heavy shit and vice versa. Instant Gratification/Downtown Battle Mountain 2 are great starting points. Each features a different clean vocalist; they've gone through 3, but it's been the same drummer and lead guitar the whole time. You should also check out some Oingo Boingo! Sort of Ween-adjacent in that they can get silly but a lot of it is genuinely infectious tunes. Nothing To Fear is my fav album but Dead Man's Party is their most accessible. If you like brass, you'll like them. Check out Vulfpeck (though you seem like the kinda guy who already has). Awesome soul/jazz/funk with extremely talented musicians. The _bass_. The Beautiful Game and Hill Climber are my favorites. For something completely different. Check out SEYCHELLES by Masayoshi Takanaka. One of the grandfathers of Japanese City-Pop. This album is so dang chill with beachy, latin vibes accompanying masterful guitar, tasteful in-the-pocket drums, and excellent bass. Lastly, check out XTC. Oranges and Lemons or Drums and Wires. Wonderful, eclectic pop music often heralded as the most intelligent, masterful pop ever written. Think Beatles if they started in the 70s. They're everywhere. Awesome bassist. Holy shit, sorry for the blog post. You have great taste and your format's great. Hope to see more from you. Subbed!
Only just recently discoverd your channel and think you're a huge breath of fresh air when it comes to music reaction channels, so props there. I cannot believe that you reacted to SAW2 by Aphex Twin, such an amazing ambient album btw. I wanted to suggest Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. You might not be into Jazz much but it is such a chaotic, beautiful and unique album. Think you would really appreciate it for what it is at the very least. One of my favourites of all time and think some of your viewers would also enjoy to see you react to a beloved jazz album.
Nice video! So many react channels feel fake, but as a huge Ween fan, I dug that you felt confident criticizing the tracks you didn't like as much, as many of the react channels seem to love everything they hear, which feels fake as hell.
That ending though, no man has not come back to Ween after hearing them, you leave perhaps a year goes by and you stumble upon a Ween clip on youtube and you're lost in the sauce once again.
1:48 - You commented on the vocals saying one of them sounds adult and one of them sounds like a kid, if you pay closer attention to them they sound an awfully similar to the voices of a certain yellow sponge and a pink starfish. Not sure if Hillenburg took inspiration from that or simply coincedence but cool nonetheless.
cool video. i love ween, went through a big ween phase and have seen them play twice. they put on a great show. like you noticed, the guitarist is really so amazingly talented! they are truly a great band.
When I first subscribed you had 4000 subscribers. Now a month or two later you have over 7000. I like following smaller channels in the hopes of maybe seeing them go from nothing to Mr beast in several years. I don't know about Mr beast but I bet that you'll have 10000 subscribers by Christmas. If you want to go even further into the weirdness that is ween, I would definitely recommend chocolate and cheese. If you want an album that's a little more tame, white pepper is pretty good as well. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you and I wish the best for your channel. Oh ps look at the lyrics to Ocean man and look at the lyrics to echoes by Pink Floyd
@@smags1082 oh by the way did you see the lyrics to both songs? Ocean man says"ocean man, take me by the hand lead me through the land that you understand" echoes says" and do I take you by the hand and lead you through the land and help me understand the best I can?"
I think ocean man speaks to the importance of having the context of the rest of an album around a song, because on its own it's just this kinda sweet laid back beachy melody, but in the album its sort of symbolizing the end, rising up out of the darker oceany songs onto the coast before the final sendoff. idk
First time I heard golden eel I was tripping on mushrooms with my buddy who was tripping just as hard and driving us to the store for orange juice. Volume at 11 and his audio system had been malfunctioning so instead of the volume automatically increasing as the motor revved up, when he would hit the gas all the speakers randomly got quieter and louder individually, turning an already strange experience, with an already crazy amount of hallucinogens and crazy song into my personal auditory nightmare. Man it was a blast. He must reveal the words of the golden eel!
Love the videos! A few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan or White Pony - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop)
Found your channel last week and I’ve watched every vid since then. Keep up the great work! Recommendation: the stranger by Billy Joel The album doesn’t have a single miss.
I've been in love with this band for 30 years and I'm gonna miss them when I die. Please check out Chocolate & Cheese at some point. And you really gotta see them live to get the full flavor.
I’m dancing in the show tonight sounds like SpongeBob and Patrick singing. The mollusk song was referenced in season one in the dream episode when SpongeBob goes into Gary’s dream. The Blarney Stone reminds me of Mr krabs lol. That’s what I always thought about this album.
What kind of questions are these?! I pissed myself when you said that... they are the only kind of questions that the great Dean and Gene could create!
Very cool album! Except for Ocean Man of course I wasn't too familiar with Ween before but I love it! The Spongebob and Pink Floyd lore connection is so cool too. My suggestion to help you get to 10K by Christmas (though no help needed!) I suggest listening to Air - Moon Safari (downtempo/space pop/chill-out), Alice in Chains - Dirt (grunge/alternative metal), Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions (Trip hop/downtempo). No pressure though, all in good time. Hope you're enjoying the fall season, get well soon. I'm having a great time on this channel and the suggestions in the comments! Much love

Shout out to all my Weeners this is our time
proud Weener tapping in
REAL
You could say we're "waving our dicks in the wind" 😆
BIG JILM!!
Ween should be much more popular. The world is just stupid.
There is a direct reference to this album in spongebob, there is a line where spongebob says to garry “mind your wondering eye, you little mollusk”
The Blarney Stone was sung by Dean Ween, while most of the rest of Ween's songs are sung by Gene Ween
Ohhhhhh
Love this album. It’s like a drunken talent-show in a pirate ship bar.
Ween are always serious, they're just not afraid to get weird & that's what makes them the greatest band!
Ween is the best band of all time.
Check out Live in Chicago from '03!
i’ve listened to this album countless times and it did not even occur to me that old jimmy wilson was a metaphor for something deeper
Dude same 😭
ween really weened all over the place with this album
Loving your videos! A fun fact - The Mollusk is actually referenced in an early Spongebob episode (spongebob tells gary to mind his wandering eye, little mollusk).
Chocolate and Cheese next!
Ween are the Masters of putting the solo you need exactly when you need it and exactly where you need it.
LCD Soundsystem! I really think you would love them. Sound of Silver or This is Happening are both great places to start! Era-defining dance punk!
second this

Seconded on rain dogs and bone machine
rain dogs is one of the best written albums ive ever listened to. i third that one specifically but he really didnt miss much
Rain dogs! So many great Tom Waits albums but that is probably his magnum opus.
7k already bro, i feel like a proud parent watching you grow up this fast.

You really need to watch Ween Live in Chicago. They are one of the best live bands ever. They rock out even the most simplest goofiest songs live.
I really think it's time for you to get into Beck. His album Odelay is a great place to start.
Also Sea Change!
@@jarjar1715Sea change is a masterpiece but odelay would be more entertaining as a reaction video
