  • If you are in the market for a new Ryzen 7 3700X or a Ryzen 9 3900X, whcih both come included with a Wraith Prism Cooler, then do you even need to go out and spend the extra money on say... something like a 360MM AIO Liquid Cooler? Well today we test Deepcool's New 360MM Castle which is their best in the series for Cooling (and surprisingly does a good job on cooling).

      Easy mistake given that the 3600X is a 95W part while the 3700X is a 65W part. Kolbot could be right in that they did specify the prism at some point for the 3600X as I distinctly recall seeing the spire for the 3600 and not the stealth, but I could be mistaken on that.

    • @Austin1990
      @Austin1990 5 лет назад +4

      This is my concern with people recommending the 3600 with the stock cooler. It comes with the wraith stealth cooler while the 3600X comes with the wraith spire cooler. The stealth (edit: spire) is enough for the 3600X. But, when the 3600 boosts to similar performance and power draw, it could fall behind the 3600X due to thermal limits.

      You only need that additional airflow if your motherboard has a bad design. A motherboard with proper VRM's won't have any component heat up too much. To some extend it is about the quality of the components but even with bad/mediocre components like on the MSI X470 Gaming Carbon it is fine if you have enough of those components because the electrical power is spread over enough components, put a simple heatsink on it with enough fins and you have no issue at all. I quote Buildzoid: "those components are crap but if you have enough of that crap..."
      Sure, if you buy a bottom of the barrel B350/B450/X470 motherboard then that top-down cooler its airflow will help. You will spend a lot less but also have more noise. I rather have MSI, Gigabyte, Asus and ASRock not spend $20 on RGB and other decorative nonsense and put proper VRM's on it, AMD not bundle any cooler and give a $20 discount. The temperatures will be great with an aftermarket cooler, it won't cost much more and you don't have that noise!

    • @givemeajackson
      @givemeajackson 5 лет назад +29

      interestingly that's not always a good thing. compared to the aio, yeah, probably still good. but when i switched from the wraith stealth to my dark rock pro 4 VRM temps on my x370-f dropped by almost 30 degrees. turns out that if you're really pushing the cooler to the limit, it spits out very warm air and actually heats up the VRM instead of cooling it down. dual tower coolers are not known for good VRM cooling. best setup would be to get an AIO or waterblock and then just zip tie a fan to the VRM heatsinks. i've reinstalled my custom loop and now have the wraith's pretty little AMD branded 92 mm fan sitting on the GPU backplate blasting the VRM heatsink with nice cool air. looks great and works great imo.

    • @SaccoBelmonte
      @SaccoBelmonte 5 лет назад +1

      It really depends on how you mount your cooler. Mine is push pull from the top towards the motherboard and one of the fans is directly behind the top heatsink always blowing a good amount of air towards it. The air being pushed there is cooler coming from a Rad than the air coming from the wraith cooler which is probably warmer.

  • @SamChaneyProductions
    @SamChaneyProductions 4 года назад +2

    Thanks for making this. I think a lot of people go for AIO coolers because that's what everyone else is doing and they look nice, but they usually don't provide much better cooling (and in many cases even worse cooling than a good Noctua HSF cooler). Also, I don't think many people realize that "HSF" or "air" coolers usually actually have liquid refrigerant in the heat pipes that handles the brunt of the heat transfer. This refrigerant changes phase from liquid to vapor and back inside the heat pipes, and these phase changes are actually more effective at transferring heat than just pumping liquid water around. Dollar for dollar, "air" coolers almost always outperform AIO's in terms of cooling and noise.

Its more expensive for sure especially with those fans but I do get 5C decrease in temps compared to the nh-d15 and also the fans on my nh-d15 make a weird noise after 1.1k rpm. That said, my cooler is also quiter with those fans than nh-d15(1k rpm noctua is same loud and those fans at 1.2k rpm) but again, it was all almost 3x the price of that cooler so yeah. There's nothing to wonder.
      If you're going to run a Ryzen on stock, use the stock cooler.
      If you're going to run a Ryzen overclocked, use a beefy aftermarket cooler or a water solution.
      Don't use water-AIO's tho, I had one and didn't see much improvement over a beefy air cooler, but the air cooler cooled down way much faster than water did, prolly cuz there's less mass in an air cooler.
      Besides, I prefer an air cooler that blows down on the motherboard, especially the RAM which a watercooler doesn't. So, the AMD stock coolers is not just good, but it's also good for your RAM and motherboard heatsinks, which most ppl forget.

    Some useful data would be temps on a 3700X with 140W rated prism, 160W*1 rated 4 pipe 212X, 200W rated 6 pipe big Air, 240 AIO and 360 AIO.
    My hypothesis is that while big coolers will get the package temps down, the thermal density of the 3000 series CPU's will maintain an issue with junction temps over the package edge temps because of hot spot creation. You can only pump in so much power before the hot spot temps run into a time conduction issue (cannot move through the silicon to the heat spreader fast enough) and result in exponentially less effective cooling even though the package temps are reducing. This was something I noted doing overclocking and cooling tests on a R5 1600, where the disparity between Tj temps and package temps on Aida 64 showed a steady increase as you pumped more power in. The differences between the spire, 212X and a 612 with high cfm high speed fan, became negligible despite lower package temps with the bigger air cooler. I.e the spire had a big disparity around 8°C, while the 212 and 612 showed a 5-6°C difference. I'd have to run the tests again to accurately plot this, but from memory while the 612 got package temps lower, it had the greater difference between package and Tj temps. E.g. The spire had package temps around 62°C and Tj of 70°C. The 212X was about 54°C with a Tj of 59°C while the 612 was 52°C package and Tj was at 58°C suggesting there was some thermal lag involved that kept Tj higher proportional to package temps.
    Whether this "thermal lag" is an actual thing is hard to say as I didn't have a water cooler to test with, but if I had the hypothesis would suggest that a package temp of 48°C would have seen a Tj temp greater than 6°C higher or roughly 55°C.
    Tying this into the high thermal density of the Ryzen 3000 series, it would suggest a larger disparity between package and Tj temps for a given power input. Reductions in package temps with ambient cooling can only make minor differences in Tj temps and larger coolers will only have minimal impact on max frequency. In other words a 360 AIO will make little difference to a 240 AIO which will be marginal to a big Air cooler because reductions in package temps will have a reduced effect on Tj temps, similar to how pumping up the voltage gets decreasing frequency gains once you go past the optimum voltage/frequency gains point on the voltage curve, requiring exponentially more voltage for each 100MHz gain, you'd require exponentially more cooling power for each degree of temp reduction. Thecquestion is where is this optimum point for 7nm Ryzen processors given the steep voltage curve (and thus power) once you go past ~100W of power draw per chiplet.
    *1 212X has historically been considered a 140-160W cooler but coolermaster is showing it as handling 225W of power in their I7 3820 overclocked to 4.6GHz @225W graph, which seems to be a bogus special circumstance example.

Personally i think better to put that 100 bucks for an AIO on other stuff like on a better graphics card or better SSD or faster memory. Stock cooler of my 2600x has been doing a great job for me no complaints and further more no need to worry abt dealing with leaks or a broken pump or something. When cash is not a problem and you know every two or three years u will will make a new build with the latest CPU well nothing can stop u, go for the AIO.

    AIOs are one of the biggest scams in PCs in years. If you heat soak them for 2 hours with the CPU loaded by something like Prime 95, to see what the real temps will be, they rarely out perform a good air cooler like a Noctua or Be Quiet 140mm cooler, even the better 120mm air coolers for that matter.
    AIOs are also noisy.
    I thought by now, almost everybody would know the quirks of liquid coolers. IE you can't test for 10 minutes and get the true temp like a air cooler.
    You have to load and heat soak all that liquid to do it right and that takes quite awhile.
    Liquid coolers need fluid replacement, do spring leaks more often that the companies want to admit and cost more.
    Even my cheap ass Cooler Master Evo 212 keeps my i7 7700k at 59°c under full load with Prime 95. That's considerable room for a sizable OC if I wanted to, and the nice 140mm coolers out there perform even better than that, with no leaks, noise or getting in the way of servicing and cleaning a PC.

      One of the things I like about AIO coolers is that I can put the rad in the front of my case so it can be cooled with air from outside. Most gpu's these days have their coolers exhaust hot air inside the case and air coolers are soaked in that which in my experience, results in worse temp than AIO. It's funny because making it easier to see and clean my components was also why I chose AIO over airs. Never had noise with any air or aio cooler

    nice to see the good quality of the ryzen cpu coolers , is important to mention that the tsmc 7nm silicon is so limited by the imposed amd locks so that i stays very efficient and because of that when one of the 3 locks is hit even if the other 2 are not, youre cpu will stop increasing the frequency and you hit that frequency wall. Here are the silicon frequency locks described on the anandtech article:
    "Package Power Tracking (PPT): The power threshold that is allowed to be delivered to the socket.
    This is 88W for 65W TDP processors, and 142W for 105W TDP processors.
    Thermal Design Current (TDC): The maximum amount of current delivered by the motherboard’s voltage regulators when under thermally constrained scenarios (high temperatures)
    This is 60A for 65W TDP processors, and 95A for 105W TDP processors.
    Electrical Design Current (EDC): This is the maximum amount of current at any instantaneous short period of time that can be delivered by the motherboard’s voltage regulators.
    This is 90A for 65W TDP processors, and 140A for 105W TDP processors."
    I think Intel has a wider range for those , and i think is one of the reasons why those intel cpus clock much higher but also draw much more juice , amd wanted those to be efficient , the vrms on x570 are way overdone for those power draw limits, also in terms of cooling wouldnt be a problem for some high end noctua cooler or good aio , but it doesnt matter since your locked by amd and that pbo it think doesnt really cross the power boundaries , or if it does is by a very limited %

    I am a gamer and have the 8700k chip at 5.0 and the 1080 combo for 1440p. It's great and if I needed another setup I'd go AMD this round. We'll see in a couple years how my setup holds up.

      Nah. Just save your money and wait for better gpus and swap it out.
      8700k is good enough for gaming already. Unless Amd offer something better. Ryzen 3 is more like better version of 9th series Intel.
      For gpus lineup Don't buy any Rtx cards or amd cards yet.
      Nvidia and Amd still holding their best cards.

    you should update this test with the new agesa microcode. prob makes a difference now.

    I went with the B450 Tomahawk and the 3700x. I hope that i don't end up regretting it, since there seems to be a lot of bios issues with the Tomahawk. I couldn't pass up $99 for a MB though that has a great VRM heatsink.

    Considering I don’t plan on overclocking and I live in Canada, I think the wraith prism on my Ryzen 5 3600 will be just fine.

    I kinda wish you showed how the two coolers sounded like as noise levels is something to take into consideration too. I know focus wasn't to showcase the coolers but more so showing that the stock one is more than capable of doing its job, but I feel like showing all sides to it is important.

    It would depend a lot on the ambient temperature too.

    Been looking for a vid like this to see if this gen AMD's had decent cooling like the previous gen. Thanks man!

      Not on the 3600. The stealth cooler is too dinky. AIDA64 it thermal throttles it has

    Surprised that cooler keeps up with a radiator--I still on the fence whether to buy a 3900x--i9 9900k is $440 right now, cheaper Mobos, and I think 8 core/16 thread with all cores 4.7 Ghz (can go higher with right setup) vs 12 core/24 thread at 4.0-4.1 Ghz all core is very lacking for gaming. Sure the FPS is still good on 60hz monitors but gaming at 144-165hz locked is a totally different world and that extra 700mhz increase across all cores (which many games do not use more than 4 which is why I'm still rocking my i7 3820 3.6ghz base 4.2ghz boost today) seems to steer me towards Intel. Not trolling nor am I being paid by Intel lol please leave comments if you have any thoughts/insight you would like to share

      You don't need the extra threads if you're just gaming...

    Super relevant comparison, thanks for this!
    I'll probably just use the prism if I can't stretch the budget to a custom loop (mainly for fun!).

    I just installed a 360EX on my 3900x because the temps were warmer than I liked and the stock cooler was ridiculously loud, ramping up and down all the time and the setting it the fan full power constantly was unbearable too. 360EX isn't cooling as much as I'd hoped but it's still got much better idles and max temps regardless and the fans whisper along compared to that high pitched BS the stock had going on. This in an ambient of 17c to 21c btw.

    My NH-D15 never goes above 65 degrees, even when stress testing, with my 2700x, which gets a lot hotter than the new Ryzens. So it must be a lot better (and) cheaper than most AIOs.

    • @Kynos1
      @Kynos1 5 лет назад

      @@SilkMilkJilk Anything below 70 degrees while stress testing is acceptable in my book. I wouldn't wanna go higher than that and certainly not 80-85 degrees like you get with the Prism. I'm pretty sure those tems significantly reduce lifespan.

    Now you just need to include noise levels between the two while showing the benchmark scores. Hard to say the liquid cooler doesn't make such a difference when you don't know the difference in noise too. Just a thought. Thanx for the vid/info.

    I regret getting an aftermarket cooler for my 1700 build a few years ago. Went with a Hyper 212 and the heatsink is too big to fill all 4 ram slots, should have just stuck with the stock cooler to begin with and had similar performance! Will be moving to 3900X and probably sticking with the Prism

    How much is prism better than the max? Got the max a while ago new for 15$ and thinking to upgrade to prism,is it worth it?

      They are the same, the Prism just has RGB.

    I'd like to see someone do the x370 vs x570 comparrison between the Crosshair VI and VIII, by someone familiar with both boards. People who aren't will miss a bunch of stuff, but I'd like to see a video like that before I buy a CH8 to replace my CH6, but I'm going to get the CPU first, a 3900X, and after a couple of months will upgrade the board. Would be nice to see a comparison.
