  • I've got a new favourite... and it's the Fenix PD35R. It all started with the PD35 V3.0, which took me by surprise with its incredible attention to detail, quality, and performance. But most importantly, it could be easily carried around in my jeans pocket. The PD35R has some additional features that make it a FULLY-FLEDGED tactical light that anyone can use. Is this the right light for you? Find out in my video.

    Fenix PD35R: Video Transcript
    General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
    • I was very eager to get this light in the mail, given that I'm a huge fan of the PD35 V3.0. The PD35R is a step up in some ways, but I wouldn't say it's hugely different from the PD35 or even in the same category. The PD35R is a fully-fledged tactical flashlight and you get an upgraded 3400mAh cell, dual tail switch, and USB-C charging. It's high candela, pocketable - everything that I look for in a tactical flashlight.
    • This is what you get in the box: 18650 cell, holster, lanyard, instruction manual
    • Comparison with other similar-sized tactical flashlights.
    Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel, and reflector
    • Fenix is second to none when it comes to build quality. They incorporate a classic design with intricate details. I like the tail cap detailing especially. Even the clip is perfectly machined! The logo lines up perfectly, which is another example of attention to detail. Smooth slightly glossy anodization. Some fine knurling on the battery tube. One thing I like about this light is that it's basically the same diameter from the head to the tail cap. It's only 25mm at the largest point, which makes it very comfortable to pocket.
    • SFT40 with a smooth reflector. AR glass lens. Crenulated bezel with no sharp edges, it won't attract unnecessary attention but remains functional if you need to break a window.
    • The light has two switches on the tail-cap, one to access the momentary/constant output modes, and the other for a one-step strobe. Doesn't tail-stand unfortunately. I find tail-switch lights much more comfortable and practical to use.
    • Takes a 18650 cell (included) and also 2X CR123 primaries. Onboard charging is available. Did I mention you also get a lifetime warranty?
    UI - modes
    • One of my favorite Uis - It's just so simple to use. Half-press for momentary on. Full press to switch it on. The smaller switch then switches between the 5 modes. If you switch the light off, the momentary mode will store the last remembered mode. When off, the smaller switch activates strobe mode. I've come to appreciate simple Uis and in a tactical light especially, a shortcut to turbo and one-step strobe is so important, as you don't want to be fumbling around in a crucial situation.
    Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
    • Ceiling bounce test, CCT, CRI. When using a Samsung 30Q, I actually measured over 400m throw.
    • Beautiful, round beam profile with strong and bright hotspot, decent spill with no artefacts. It's amazing how intense the hotspot is, given the smaller reflector and bezel size.
    Considerations
    • USB-C port cover design - I prefer the port under an unscrewable bezel, or on the battery itself. But it does make it easy to charge this light on the go. The port is also waterproofed so if for whatever reason the cover comes loose, you're safe.
    • On turbo, sustains output until 30 seconds vs 2.5 minutes for the PD35 V3.0 - quite a significant difference. On the positive side, the PD35R never gets too hot to hold. Both lights seem to be using different drivers.
    • No spring on the head - not an issue for me as I use this as a general EDC.
    Verdict
    • Fenix has seriously hit the ball out of the park with the PD35R. Yes, it does cost more than some other tactical lights out there, but it's extremely well-rounded with great performance, quality, reliability, and ongoing customer service - for me, the PD35R is up there in my top 5 EDC tactical flashlights.

      You are doing one hell of a job! I am certain you will have more views as people start to see your content. I will share as often as I can! Is there any chance I can place a request for your anduril video link? Also, do you have an emitter comparison video?

      @@grahamcairns2249 yeah hopefully! Thank you for sharing man, makes a huge difference as this is still a small channel, doesn't get much reach. Anduril video link? What do you mean? I've seen people do emitter comparison videos with say, 3 of the same host but with different LEDs. I just don't have multiples of the same host besides some Convoy models.

      @DarrenYeoYT Ahh. I totally understand. I am currently trying to understand the difference between the emitters. As for the Anduril link, you mentioned in some of your videos that you have done an in-depth Anduril ui video, but I have not been able to find it. I'm pretty new to the Anduril world and am trying to better understand it. Thanks for all these replies! I really appreciate it!

      In terms of emitters there so much to learn. Check out budget light forum too. Also depends if you're looking for overall brightness or range (throw). You can get both in some emitters. Thanks mate

  • @FalconFXICCY
    @FalconFXICCY Год назад +1

    I love the SFT40. It's one of the best LEDs out there for throw, right behind the SBT90.2 and the PM1/W2. The size of the PD35R is about as large as I would want in a pocketable EDC, and it has just the right amount of spill for general purpose use on top of being a spotter. If Fenix ever dips their feet into the 100mm+ reflector sizes, this SFT-40 and the SFT-70 LED are prime candidates for it.

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  Год назад +1

      Yeah, the SFT40 has the best combo of high output and throw, though apparently some W2 emitters can get close to 1800 lumens. The XHP70.3HI might be one you wanna check out too. Similar to SFT70.

    • @FalconFXICCY
      @FalconFXICCY Год назад

      You'd have to push the W2 above 12A draw to get that 1800 lumens, and I'd be worried about emitter life if it's in any host similar to the Fenix. W2 in a Noctigon DM11 on a Moli P45B is already toasty as it is.... As for the XHP70.3H, the only experience I have with one is from an Acebeam P17 I borrowed for a night from a coworker, and I didn't remember its throw being all that impressive, even though its sheer lumen output was... If Acebeam ever makes an SFT70 based light, however, I'd grab one. If I didn't already have a few SFT40 lights, I'd grab their P18, as their drivers are in a league of its own in performance.

    A really solid, comprehensive review. Thank you. I've narrowed my search for a new Fenix flashlight to: PD36 TAC, PD36R PRO and this one (PD35R). Which one would you choose? Thank you very much. Great channel! 👌

      Hi mate! Glad you like my videos. I would get the PD35R as it's the only one I frequently carry along with me. Significantly smaller than the other two, and also has better long range performance. But if you need extended runtime and brightness, the PD36 models are both good choices. They're noticeably larger though, especially in jeans pocket.

If you’re looking for throwing light I would go with the pro, if your looking for more of a longer run time with more flood go with the Pd36r

    Fenix keeps screwing up with “tactical lights” they are making. I believe a tactical light should always start on high mode without a memory option like Klarus lights that are dual switch or nextorch. As a CCW holder , God forbid i forget that my light is on low mode next time I need to use it on high mode.

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  Год назад +1

      Yeah, of course that will be a failsafe UI to have guaranteed access to turbo. I've seen some other lights with turbo as the only mode available. The other modes are handy though, though perhaps they can be hidden away somewhere.
