    Aw man that popcorn analogy is probably the best and most original way I’ve ever hear someone describe the density of Trail Boss compared to almost all other powders.

    speed of sound changed depending on altitude etc.
    my 308 takes about 9gr trail boss for ideal velocity of about 1050fps with a 150gr cast projectile.
    i tend to favor increasing the weight of the projectile, over reducing the powder charge. I have now gone up to a 200gr cast projectiles, since i have a 1/10 twist and yet to tune the powder.
    i have heard a lot of people talk about projectiles stopping in the barrel, however, yet to see it in real life when you are driving the projectiles at 700-1050fps.

    Berry sells a 220gr copper plated bullet ($85US for 200). With 10.5 gr Trail Boss was my best subsonic .308.

    The Armed Tramper, Use not just subsonic bullets but put petroleum jelly in the sound suppressor and hear the difference. About the only thing that you'll hear is the snap of the firing pin snapping forward.

    Great video mate.
    Amazed you're stabilizing that weight with that twist rate... but good for you.
    My 1:8" CVA Scout wont stabilize over 200gn.

    • @Riqrob
      @Riqrob 3 года назад +2

      I've read in several places that the blunt nose of the lead bullets help to stabilize. Less length for the weight.

    I use 11g Trail Boss under a 220 or 225 g Hornady projectile.
    Not sure of velocity but would be around 1000ft/sec give or take.
    I zero my rifle with supersonic 180g rounds at 100m then use the ballistic reticle to hold over for 100m targets subsonic.
    1MOA is doable sometimes 4 shots out of 5.
    Big projectiles need a 1;10 twist or faster.
    If you use the 2.8 inch max length for the overall cartridge and a 225 Match projectile then 11 grains is getting very close to the max non compressed capacity of the 308 brass.
    Word is dont compress the Trail Boss Powder as very bad things can happen.
    My next task is to track down a good 220g projectile that will mushroom on deer because match stuff and probably sst or other ballistic tip stuff wont.

  • @tedbear2478
    @tedbear2478 3 года назад +1

    My projectiles expand to roughly 15-16mm but still it does not drop them deer always straight away. Mine are only about 180grains and hollowpoints.

      @@TheArmedTramperNZ well i cast my bullets verry soft they expand prety nice. Does not matter where I hit them. My bullets are so soft you can pinch em with your fingernail and leave a visible indent. But its hard to get then to shoot well when they are so soft. Need slow powders for keeping pressures low. Next attempt i will mak bullets with a softer nose and harder shank.

    I would keep it under the Transonic barrier like 950fps or less that’s for accuracy and sound. with the right twist rate you’ll be set

    Ahh found pt1. That gives me the info on the rounds I was looking for. A couple of questions....do you use a filler in the cases to take up excess volume?.Or does the trail boss eliminate the need for this as its such big particles?. I've seen videos of people using the stuffing out of soft toys for a filler?. As the trail boss is large how does it throw?.
    Also what barrel length and twist rate are you using in your rifle?. Many thanks for the info.

    • @TheArmedTramperNZ
      @TheArmedTramperNZ  2 года назад +1

      16” barrel - can’t remember twist off hand, but have answered that question before so it’s in the comments here somewhere. Trail boss fills it nicely, not too loose, seems to burn well and fully. Throws fine through my hornady autocharge

    • @xkguy

      10gr Trail Boss will nearly fill the case. It comes in the usual '1lb' canister but only has 9oz in it.
