    something i do for all my subsonic reloading, is after i finish the round, i take a blue sharpie and go along the rim, so i KNOW to never use that brass for a standard loading again. just an extra safety tip! Happy loading!

    • @whiskeybravo11
      @whiskeybravo11 5 лет назад +1

      I do the same. Basically when they are finished and cleaned I made up a foam pad and put thinned down pain on it. Push it down so the paint covers the extracter rim then sit it on another pad to run off then wipe the base off. Reason I do it that way is the paint don't rub off being in the extracter groove.
      I don't understand why you would never use a sub case for a normal load again unless you punch out the flash hole. (I have better velocity spread with non drilled large primer using a cci 250 then I did with any combination. I'm using trailboss tho.)

      I've heard one should not use cases from subsonic loads for full power loads due to the case not stretching, and in fact shortening in length. This increases headspace. Not dangerous with low power loads, high/ full power loads may lead to case separation.

    I hope someone will see this and respond. I used this formula with one exception. I loaded 165 gr Hornady BTSP over 10 gr. Trail Boss. I drilled out the flash hole to 7/64 and used Federal 210 Match primers. I am hoping to find good results for hogs using a Silencer Co Harvester on a Mossberg MVP Flex with 1:10 twist and an ATN 4K Pro 3-14 for a hunt coming up for my granddaughter and me.

    The speed of sound will depend on atmosphere air density. It changes all the time. It's not the same in hot dry air at 8000 feet as it is at sea level below freezing. At sea level with dry air at 68*F the speed of sound is 1125fps.1050 fps is a common number to strive for and allows some room for thick air. But I have had supersonic crack at 1020fps in the winter.
    If you plan on loading for thick air there are charts online.

    Watch out with that stuffed animal filler. It looks like Dacron, which can gum up a silencer even if it leaves the barrel clean. Most centerfire silencers don’t come apart to clean, so they can become dangerous. With the right powder, filler isn’t necessary at all; especially with Trailboss. I use Titegroup without filler or opening the flash holes. Most of the case is empty, but it isn’t position sensitive so is very consistent.

    The problem I have when I clean the brass, is that there is always some corn cob stuck in the flash hole. How do you deal with that problem? Why don’t you do a video about what happens when you reload a rifle round and tumbling media remains/lodged in the brass. How it effects pressure, accuracy, and how likely it is to blow up the gun. You make awesome videos and I'm most grateful for all the work you do.😊

    Your formula is a bit different than mine. Like you mentioned, I also use Trail Boss, open up the flash hole. However I use a CCI Large Rifle Magnum primer, without using a packing material. Prior to switching to the CCI mag primer I got some annoying variances shot-shot. And a good bit more fouling than I would like. But once I switched; I have yet to see anything more consistent.

    I am trying to safely reload subsonic for my 300WM using 190 Accubond. My gunsmith said to be careful because too little powder could blow up the gun. Is that correct? I want to use Trail Boss for the powder. A friend suggested trying 9 to 11 grains of Trail Boss. Safety is my main concern.

    • @fjb4932
      @fjb4932 3 года назад +1

      Ron A,
      Too much /little of the wrong powder May cause a problem.
      But even too little of the correct powder won't do any more than stick a bullet in the bore.
      Now, firing another round with an obstructed bore Will be a problem.
      The same with double charging a case with a load that's only safe with a single loading.
      Ocassionally a reloader may throw around the term "SEE" in a vain or misdirected attempt to seem educated. At least two major powder manufacturing companies have tried to reproduce this, all to naught. The exception to this is only when they double or triple charged a case with the supposed load (ie: instead of the 5.0 grains the handloader swears he loaded, the powder co. loads 10.0 and up to 15.0 grains of powder X). Once a gun is destroyed, it's difficult to reconstruct how he managed it. In almost every case, the reloader dis-assembles the remaining cases, and, no surprise, all have the correct amount of powder, "proving" that the case that blew up the gun Must have been correct also and could not possibly have been overcharged.
      Each kernel /grain of powder produces a certain amount of energy. The less kernels the less energy. To the point where not enough energy is produced to push the bullet from the muzzle. Whether the primer flame burns from the powder base towards the front or flashes over the powder column, it still remains there is only one way for the pressure to escape: towards the muzzle.
      A firearm designed to operate at 62,000 psi ( and proof tested at 80,000 psi ) would be hard pressed to self destruct at 8,000 psi with 3.5 grains of a ( correct ) powder ...

      Ron A,
      No, this is a urban ( reloaders ) myth. Fun to pass on as if we know something another doesn't, but not true.
      Many have tried to reproduce this after a handloader wrecks his rifle ( NEVER with a handgun, this should provide a clue ) claiming he charged, say ten cases with a certain lite charge, and nine fired fine ( or so it's claimed ) and the tenth blew up. The mere mention of the guy having inadvertently double charging that case is seldon offered as a cause.
      There was an article in PRECISION SHOOTING magazine ( can't remember the title nor author ) that delved into this phenomenon ( as it was consistantly labeled at the time this was actively discussed ) where possible causes of too much pressure destroyed a rifle. Labs at powder manufacturers tried to recreate this using the same criteria the handloader "claimed" he used, all to no detriment. The charges were actually gradually reduced untill the bullet failed to exit / stuck in the bore. Naturally the lab made sure to visually and physically check the bore, something a shooter may do religiously the first number of firings but once the load proves safe this practice is neglected and evenually dropped. The labs were unable to reproduce this phenomenon. A bullet obstructed in the bore with the next round ( or two or more ? ) fired may cause problems. Nevermind the guy who unknowingly double or ( dare i say, triple charges a case with fast burning pistol powder, or the Wrong powder ! ) How many will admit to self-idiocracy ?
      Each kernel of powder has a certain amount of powder it can produce. A case that can safely hold a fifty grain load will be safe with a five grain load ( of a different powder ! ). It Cannot produce more pressure if the case it is contained in is the same volume.
      The claim that the primer flame flashes over the powder and burns from the bullet towards the case head thereby increasing pressure ( with a subsonic powder charge ) beyond what a proofload produces boggles my mind. All things being equal, less powder produces less pressure. More powder produces more pressure.
      I was wrong once, so i have been wrong. But since reloading from the early '90s and shootin many lite loads ( sticking cast and jacketed bullets in revolvers as well as rifles ) i've never blown up a firearm nor case. I don't consider myself a Christopher Columbus, but at the same time not the timid fools standing on the dock jeering and fortelling doom to anyone sailing into uncharted waters. I will follow others and so far have returned safe. Take responsibility for Your actions ( or lack thereof ).
