You know, when I saw your short about the two rupees from an enemy glitch, I had a feeling you watched this channel. Anyway, everyone should watch this guy!! He's great.
The one little bit that was missed: if you return to the chicken coop after you beat the Eagle's Tower, you can see Luigi flying around with the rooster having a grand old time
My brother bought a GB just for this game. I remember thinking that a Zelda game on the GB was going to be a terrible bastardization of a, then, good franchise. Wow, was I wrong.
I remember accidentally creating a duplicate rooster in the monochrome version. I returned to the hen house without having completed Eagle's tower, but having the mirror shield, and that triggered Luigi flying around with the rooster, while I still had my own. I thought it to be somewhat confusing.
Fun fact about the Slime Eel in Catfish's Maw: You can sometimes pull out a fake one out of the wall that will chase you for a bit before it retreats back. He tends to do this more often the lower his health gets, though defeating him quickly usually guarantees that you'll likely never see this happen.~
Despite having never played it yet, but only seen RUclips videos of it, that ending; Especially the special "Seagull Marin No Death" ending, brings me to tears with a smile across my lips every time.
the trick with the horse heads is that when thrown, they move in the exact same way the knight moves in chess. it lands straight up if it can move in the L pattern correctly, basicly 2 spaces forward one up/down or 2 up/down then 1 left/right
I was going to write this as well. The head moves just like the chess piece. Seems like most people don't realize how this works, not even the author of this video.
The special no-death ending was slightly different for the original GB version, I think...the normal ending shows "The End" with a seagull flying around above the words, but if you complete without dying, that seagull is replaced by Marin's singing sprite with wings. (Taken from the official Nintendo guide for the original GB game...that seems to be the version I remember). Damn, but I've missed this game.
Fun fact: the Flying Cucco can be found in the Rooster Guy's house after beating dungeon 7. He's flying around having fun. Btw, love the walkthroughs and everything. Keep doing what your doing!
I'd prefer the normal way. Even he speak slowly, I understand more easily than someone who talk too much fast, to the point that begin to be gibberish, and I didn't get the information.
What I love the most is him explaining how to equip the bracelet to pick up rocks 115 times. I kept forgetting how to pick up rocks until he explained at least 100 times.
one of my favorite Zelda games. very fond memories. this walkthrough was fantastic. one little thing, though, about the flying rooster: if I recall correctly, after Eagle Tower, you can find the flying rooster at the chicken coop. Luigi is having a blast flying with him.
I played the original monochrome version of this game. If only walkthroughs like this one had existed at the time. I remember how frustrated I got at some points.
Everyone talks about how dark Majora's Mask is, but Link's Awakening walked so that MM could run. It was the first Zelda side story and the first to make you wonder if it was all real or just a fever dream.
Is it just me or is the ending bittersweet..you wake up.only the world you grew used to disappears. Also you can tell this a dream world. Tell me Marin isn't a splitting image of Zelda
I got this game for Christmas in 93, when I was 8 years old. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the second dungeon until I found some help from Nintendo Power, but I did eventually figure out the rest of the game on my own (except the boomerang, also thanks to Nintendo Power). I think the fact that I was exposed to such an existential story at such a young age has had a positive impact on me over the years, along with the joy of discovering how to overcome most of the trials of the game on my own. It wasn't my first Zelda, and it won't be my last, but Link's Awakening will always be the one closest to my heart. Thank you for this guide and a chance to go on this journey again 30 years later, it's been quite a pleasure. ^_^ Also, thanks to your two lovely dogs for being a joyful presence in every one of your videos. 🐶🐕
Still one of my favorite Gameboy games of all time! This was an absolute joy to play over and over when I was much younger. 🥚🎶 Thank you for reminding many of us of this collective dream we experienced about 30 years ago. 🐺🔧
I've beaten this game countless times, so there was absolutely no need to watch both parts of your guide from start to finish - but i enjoyed it so much. Oh and by the way: according to the instruction manual (at least the german one) Tarin is Marins father ;-)
Ok there is one glitch I'm really sad you didn't go over. Keeping Marin glitch that can only be done in the original. If you screen warp past the walrus you can keep Marin for the rest of the game. I love this glitch because Nintendo were aware of it and wrote a few extra lines. When The ghost starts following you it takes over Marin and she will complain about it being weird, Later when you revive the Chicken Marin turns into the Chicken. She will say things about her mind getting strange. All of this really leans into the dream logic side of the game. If you have a working original gameboy version of the game i beg you to try a run through with this glitch.
If I remember right, after you finish the Eagle's Tower, you can find the Flying Rooster at the chicken coop. Luigi is flying around with it and having a blast!
I always liked how, before the “it’s all just a dream” twist was fully spelled out, there were little hints dropped here and there- my favorite being Wart’s cameo as a callback to another game that was all just a dream in SMB2us. Great game; still one of my favorite Zeldas.
1:05:00 dude I always used spin attacks cuz I didn’t realize the shield was blocking the arrows lmao. Man. Years of playing this and still learning Shit.
I have never had played Links Awakening, so this was a cool true full first experience. Thank you as always for your effort, research and commitment into this project. I can't wait to see what's next.
My first time, I got stuck in the Eagle’s Tower but had acquired the new shield. I went ahead and defeated the Turtle Rock dungeon, got the fire rod, and came back to the Tower. The Fire rod kills the Eagle boss in two hits, if I recall…
I don't remember exactly how I came across this game, but I DO remember playing this on my Gameboy in biology class while pretending to be reading along with the teacher some 20 years ago. What an amazing game.
If you notice, when you rescue Marin from the bridge... She says she is afraid of heights... Yet she dreams of becoming a seagull. I guess during the transition from the dream world to the real world, she overcame her fear of heights. I adore the content as always! Keep up the exceptional work and have a great day!!!
The flying rooster after you no longer need him he is in the chicken guys house. The floor tile traps are easier to deal with if you go to the bottom left corner of the rooms and using the shield. No jumping or boomerang needed. You can use the hookshot in the raft game. And last you can beat the game really fast using that glitch dungeon and navigating a very precarious path you can get to the end with the wind fish. I wish I could remember the path. Seizures kind of did the old memory box in.
I was eagerly awaiting this one. More amazing work. Also 59:10 they missed a golden opportunity to make you have to steer the raft with the shovel, years before Minecraft was around
Fun fact: the rooster is still alive and well after you finish Eagles Tower. You can find him hanging out in the house with the guy feeding all the cuckoos on the mountain.
OMG FINALLY...IVE LITERALLY had the anticipation equivalent of blueballs waiting on this...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU DO SIR...and to your amazing wife who edits !!!!
I always thought it would've been neat if they'd had the big reveal at about the halfway point, and after that, had the dungeons get progressively darker and more abstract, as the nightmares began to panic. Also, I always thought that Marin always was a seagull, but just got caught in the Wind Fish's dream, which is why she was able to turn back into one after the awakening; the only other living thing on the island to still exist was Link, and that's likely because he also wasn't something that the Wind Fish dreamt up.
Word of warning: This might only apply to the original Monochrome version, but once you trade the shovel for the boomerang, it's possible to return to the shop and buy another one. But if you do that, you won't be able to get the Magic Rod in Turtle Rock. There's no way to "get rid" of an item, so you'll be locked forever out of being able to complete the game, and the only solution is to restart your save from scratch.
The only way around this is to use up all your magic powder to make a slot available for the magic rod. Doing this makes the first nightmare boss incredibly difficult without magic powder. I think the only way to trigger this scenario is to trade the shovel for the boomerang before buying the bow. This causes the shovel to show up again in the shop and it has to be bought again to make the bow available for purchase.
In the Rapids Ride one of the chests contains a secret seashell, but once you have collected the L-2 Sword all chests that have the remaining secret seashells all turn into 20 rupee chests
I love the quirky dialogue in this game. One of my favorite bits that wasn't in the video, when Papahl asks for the pineapple, if you say no, he says "You're one cold hombre..." I always thought that was hilarious.
Im a little sad you didnt mention how you can kill off Marin if you finish a dungeon while shes with you- but other than that, these videos are great! :D LOVE this game in all its forms!
One of my favorite things to do in this game for the brief period where it was available was to throw the boomerang, grab the chicken, and then fly over my enemies with my razor of death faithfully following underneath me and shredding all the enemies.
I know about a secret that's only available in the OG Link's Awakening since it requires the screen-warp glitch! I bring it up because I didn't see it in the 2 videos. In the beginning of the game, when you have collected your shield and are on the screen where you collect your sword, use the Screen-Warp glitch going RIGHT. The sword will come with you, and you can pick it up on the 'wrong' screen. Go back to where the sword is supposed to be and you'll find a Shield instead! This shield is Level 0, and invisible. To my knowledge, it acts like your Level 1 Shield in every other respect.
There's a theory that the events of this game actually take place within Zelda 2, when Link crosses the ocean on the raft to reach the second continent.
1:56:26 If I remember correctly the rooster actually ends up living with Luigi in his hen house which makes the theory about the rooster expanding it's gene pool valid
A great followup. I've been subbed for a while now and I gotta say your guides are always very well put together. You deserve every subscriber you get!
Another way to get past the Incinerator without a mirror shield is by taking advantage of invincibility frames from the special medicine. Equip Pegasus Boots and the Feather. Run at the flame thrower until you die and the medicine kicks in. During invincibility frames you will not be pushed back so use the boots and feather to jump past the fire.
I would say my only criticism about how this run was handled had to be in rooms with the flying floor tiles, going into the corner with your shield up always fully protects you. And that's such a tiny tiny gripe, fantastic guide thank you
I have fond memories as a kid of taking Link's Awakening DX, Dragon Warrior I & II, and Pokemon Yellow on my GameBoy Color and painstakingly recreating as many of the graphical assets as I could, pixel by pixel, in MSPaint and making my own fantasy game mockups. This game was highly influential in my becoming a game developer, LOL.
man i remember having the way to go in the egg taped on the front of my gameboy way back when... it was like oh man dont forget this or were screwed lol
Unfortunate you passed by the chicken coop after Eagle's Tower as that's where our flying rooster friend has gone! Just having fun giving Luigi a ride and...well with all the other chickens there I imagine the reintroduction of his DNA to the gene pool hypothesis has merit!
@@alkristopher Twilight Princess is anything but new by this point. Breath of the Wild is fun but the breaking weapons is a bit tedious. Tears of the Kingdom should have kept the runes from the first game and added in the building aspect on top of it. Link Between Worlds is ok but A Link to the Past is vastly superior.
@@alkristopher Yes, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were huge disappointments to me. Just because "Zelda" is stamped on a game doesn't mean it is good.
@3:15 とたけけ means Totakeke, you explained the reason it was added so no need to add that! Your level of research is yet again very impressive! Great videos as usual!
Beautiful work. Loved this game and loved your video. I couldn't beat the tower without screen jump glitching back in the day, but I beat the game on a long car ride with NC. Good memories.
The goodest boys play a great game! "Fun" fact about the OG gameboy version. There was no owl/stone statue in In the Face Shrine's Nightmare Key room. The first playthrough of the game I didn't have issues opening the chest, beat the game.... My second playthrough though, i couldn't get the chest to open! I did everything else in the game and couldn't clear Face Shrine! Kid-Me was convinced i had a bug or something horribly permanently damaged in my GB game from dropping it. I played the Ballad with 7 insturuments and got just about everything else, but of course couldn't complete it. Eventually I wrote Nintendo Power, and actually got a polite reply stating that I had to toss the pot at the chest. I wrote them a few other times (for Final Fantasy 2 and some other games) and they were pretty cool about answering questions.
God damn it. I just completed the remake and I’m seeing so many mistakes I made. I never bothered with the seashells, I never got the level 2 sword. I never knew the devil gave u anything else besides more magic powder. I never took a single photograph, and I barely used the boomerang
Great video. One fun thing: as long as you have the rooster, you can go ahead to level 8 and complete it before completing level 7. Although if you do, you should open & enter 7, and leave as soon as you have the mirror shield (so you can get past the fire cannon in the cave en route to level 8), and use the rooster to fly across the gaps in the bridge, instead of using the hookshot. Complete level 8, and you'll have another option for literally lighting the level 7 boss up, when the time comes: the Fire Rod. Still, awesome video!
So epic. Nice work, dude. I think loz2, and this one are my favorites. Link to the past was amazing, but I wish this was the one we got on the snes. So good. Be well, homie. Can't wait to see what's next.
Had this as kid when it came out...never got through the second dungeon lol. I tried again when I was a teen and a little more experienced and almost got stuck again XD
1:16:52 while holding the horse heads if you move two spaces one direction then one perpendicular( creating an L) before throwing theyll land correctly. They are supposed to be knight chess pieces, hence the L shape movement before throwing.
The graphics, visual effects and the scale of this game are incredible for a Gameboy game!
for an OG Gameboy game too!
YES we finally get to the part with the rooster!
You know, when I saw your short about the two rupees from an enemy glitch, I had a feeling you watched this channel.

Yeaaaaah here comes the rooster 🐓 aww yeah.

this game was a MASTERPIECE!!! The depth of it for a gameboy game is unrivaled
I keep remembering his Final Fantasy Adventure 2 parter when he fights a boss at the top of the screen, saying: "Stay down at the bottom"
It's the greatest title ever made imo.
My brother bought a GB just for this game. I remember thinking that a Zelda game on the GB was going to be a terrible bastardization of a, then, good franchise. Wow, was I wrong.
I would also suggest the Oracle games as well. Both use the system built off of this game to create fun experiences in Holodrum and Labrynna.
@@roberthunter479Only played the original Gameboy version which was in black and white. The Gameboy Color adds a small amount of color to the game.
1:56:30 If you return to the Chicken House after Eagle Tower you can see Luigi has adopted the Rooster and uses it to fly around in his house

@@roberthunter479 I guess some people are just allergic to great games.
@3:15 とたけけ means Totakeke, you explained the reason it was added so no need to add that! Your level of research is yet again very impressive! Great videos as usual!
Couldn’t wait for this to drop!!!
To me one of the top 3 Zelda games next to Zelda1 and Zelda3
I’ve been waiting for this!
I have been waiting for this video! Thanks
Alright! Part two!
UCBVG leaves no walkthrough unfinished!
Happy weekend UCBVG
Beautiful! Thanks for reviewing this one
He gave her a broom because he's going to sweep her off her feet.
God damn it. I just completed the remake and I’m seeing so many mistakes I made. I never bothered with the seashells, I never got the level 2 sword. I never knew the devil gave u anything else besides more magic powder. I never took a single photograph, and I barely used the boomerang
Well, damn, did you even play the game? 😂😉 Just messin' with ya. Hey, you can always play the master quest or hero quest or whatever it's called.
There are different ways to complete this game. UCBVG showing you an easier route.
So a good tip on the River Rapids to get everything on one trip is to use the hookshot. It will pull you back against the current.
49:17 Did you know that you can do it without the hookshot? All you need is the pegasus boot and the feather. I remember I can do it.
You can also destroy the Indigestable Flowers from the swamp with a spin attack from the second sword.
It’s a nice touch to have Wart from SMB2 in this game. SMB2 also takes place in a dream.
Your comedy is the best part of all these videos. I find myself unable to tune out for even a minute because I don't want to miss one of your jokes.
First game I was given with my Game Boy, and still my favorite game ever on the GB
