The serendipitous thing about Pentatonix in the beginning was the fact that they had a girl in the group-Kirstie-a true basso profundo-Avi-and a countertenor-Mitch. Despite the subsequent rise of other a cappella groups after PTX blew open the doors to the medium in 2011, in my humble opinion as an 81 year-old jazz pianist and award-winning classical and jazz composer, Pentatonix is the GOAT of the art form to this date!

I too am a pianist/ guitarist/ composer (not quite an award-winner, though- congrats on that!), and my appreciation and respect for PTX is through the roof! Now then, good sir, might you be so kind as to reveal your identity to us? If not, that’s perfectly cool. I’m just a bit of a jazz nut myself (Oscar, Ramsey, Nat and Ellington are but a scant few of my inspirations), so you’ve piqued my interest.
They did this Grammy winning song in one of their apartments. They used one of Avi and Kevin's closets to record the piece and their kitchen to do the filming and basic editing.They only used $400 to purchase all the props and lighting, but it was sent out for final "polishing", which would have cost a fair amount more.

Also...they did a whole album, The Lucky Ones album, recorded at home on their own...each separately in their own homes and it was all put together later at a studio. It was done during the Covid lockdown, so each purchased basic studio/recording equipment and had to set it up on their own. No doubt they got a lot of help online and on phone, but still...it's very doable.
The album that was recorded during the lockdown was "At Home", but some of the videos for "The Lucky Ones" were down remotely as well. The Lucky Ones was already recorded and probably would have been released in 2020, but the pandemic derailed that. The video for "Happy Now" was completed before the lockdown, and they sat on it, hoping to release it just before the album.
The Trio (Mitch (black hair), Scott (blonde/white hair) and Kirstin (blue hair)) all wear glasses or contacts IRL, so the cheap cosmetic contacts they were using didn't bother them too much. Neither Avi (bass) or Kevin (beatboxer) wear glasses or contacts, so while the contacts bothered Avi's eyes, he was able to power through, although you can see that his eyes really didn't appreciate it! Kevin just couldn't take the contacts, so he had to go with the goggles to keep in line with the futuristic theme of the video. If you watch Perfume Medley, you'll see the goggles make another appearance with Kevin. You'll also see Mitch with a bald head, and hear them all (but primarily Kirstin and Mitch) singing much of the medley in its original Japanese!
Kevin had to wear the visor because his eyes reacted so badly to the blue contact lenses. You can see a mild reaction by how red Avi's eyes are in the video.
Sound of Silence cover is also ridiculously well done. I really don't think that you can go wrong with anything from Pentatonix, HomeFree, or Voice Play. I have watched several dozens from each group. They are another level of talent.
I'm enjoying your reactions. Nice to see a new reactor for PTX. In case no one has mentioned this to you, a little background on the band. The bass in the videos you've done so far is Avi. He is both Jazz and Opera trained.He studied music at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. He left the group in 2017. The replacement is Matt. Not quite as deep of a voice, but he's young and still maturing. Has a music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola. (Check his solo work). He graduated from Yale in Pre Med. Speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and spent 18 months in China with his college work. The other three are highchool friends from Arlington Tx., USA. Scott Hoying, is the tall blonde and is their baritone. But he can cover the bass line with ease when the bass has the solo part. He and Kirstie (rhymes with 'thirsty') (NOT Kristy or Kierstie) graduated highschool in 2010. Scott went to Univ. Southern California (USC) for 1 year studying pop music. Kirstie is the Mezo Soprano and went to the University of Oklahoma (OU) for 1 year studying Music Theatre. Mitch graduated highschool in 2011. They entered and won the 3rd season (2011) of 'The Sing Off' and, with some hardships, launched their music careers. In fact, Mitch missed his graduation and walking across the stage to get his High School diploma because he was on a plane to California to meet up with the others to audition for The Sing Off!!! Avi and Kevin are the only ones in the group who don't regularly wear contacts or use glasses. That may explain why he had such a hard time using them.
Everyone has different reasons why Keven didn't wear the contacts. I don't believe any of them. Being an African American myself, I believe he didn't wear them because it just wouldn't look right. Those light blue eyes on a dark skinned man just would look strange. The glasses were a perfect option. That's my opinion. All the other reasons just don't cut it. Avi had problems with them. Everyone comments on the problems he had and about how they hurt his eyes and made them so red, but yet he still wore them.

We Pentaholics have a saying regarding the look on reactors faces the first time they hear him sing. It's lovingly known as a "Mitch Slap!" LOL 😂 I have not seen a truly honest and fun Mitch Slap reaction for a min.!! LOL 😂 Your's was subtle but I could see your amazement! 😮😅 PTX has just released a new live version of this song. One of the reasons I think is because of Matt Salle. He is the 'newer' bass singer. There has only been one change in the 14+ yrs PTX has been around and that is the bass singer. In this video you see Avi Kaplan, guy with a beard and a beanie! He is unbelievable but after 7 yrs he left the group. So, Matt stepped in and seamlessly took on the bass singer role. Avi now has a solo career and I wish him all beautiful things! And I love both 'versions' of PTX!! But as much as I'm blown away from the very first time they sang publicly (on The Sing-Off); I continue to be blown away by how much better they keep getting! Kevin couldn't stand the contacts so the glasses. I read that they had trouble blinking so the stare.
