Adogg, you are so sweet for the shout out but I feel bad bc I didn't think to tell you I'm a girl, born and raised. Lol. It's all good tho. You're not the first to make that mistake. Just for future reference. 🤣💜🔥🤘
This one is mind-blowing, huh? Some people have gotten the story on this wrong, so I'll give it to you straight. The group had booked professional studio time to both record the song and shoot the video, but the booking fell thru at the last moment. So they decided to record it in a bedroom closet, then shoot it in Avi & Kevin's kitchen, using just black curtains, a couple of ring lights, a black light, and some smoke effects. The cost for the shoot was $400. They then got their friends at FifGen Films (who would become their regular video producers) to edit the footage at a low price. Some people believe the entire budget was $400, but that didn't include the editing and post-production costs. But it was STILL a shoestring budget, and it won them their first Grammy and led to their BIG record deal. The five members you see in this video are the five original members, and they have only had one membership change in their history, when original bass singer Avi left in 2017 and was replaced by Matt. Kirstie and Mitch are both chameleons who change their look all the time, but it's always them. And just FYI, it's just "Pentatonix", NOT "The" Pentatonix. I'm glad you kept the video going thru to the end...the little messages they do at the end are directed to their fans with whom they have a VERY devoted and appreciative relationship. Still to this day with all the success, they love and appreciate their fans and are very friendly with them.
Hey, great explanation of the background on this video. Adogg, this video was shot way back in 2013, and you will notice how much heavier Mitch was then. He has slimmed down quite a bit since then, but that angelic voice has not changed. Another video from about this same time that I would recommend to you (one of my favorites) is their cover of Royals by Lorde. Avi is a beast with his bass in that one, and Kevin and the rest are their usual awesome selves. Like your reactions; keep it coming, dogg.
Their label had dropped them. Audio recorded in a closet. Video shot in Avi and Kevin's kitchen with a $400 budget. Their first Grammy. The years pass and this medley still lives rent-free in my head.
mitch gained weight after the sing off and he hadnt lost it all on this video. but he's super skinny in almost every video after this year. and kirstin wheres a lot of wigs
I've always called Mitch and Kirstie Penta-Chameleons lmao they change their look sooooo often. I've seen reactors that are like "wait is that a new girl in the group?" Or "hold up, do they got another crazy guy singer?"
The trio as they are called,is Scott Hoying, Baritone, tall blond, Mitch Grassi, contra tenor (very rare voice)and Kirsten Maldanoldo, Mezzo Soprano. These 3 have been friends since highschool and you can find some of their performances during highschool on RUclips. They each have their own RUclips channels as well as their official channel. Mitch and Scott channel is called Superfruit, where they do covers as well as an original EP among various other things. They were in college when it was suggested to Scott Hoying that they should try out for a TV competition show called The Sing Off. The 3tried out and we're told they needed at least 5 people. They found Avi Kaplan from a friends suggestion. Avi Kaplan is a bass porfundo and was studying to become an opera singer. They found Kevin Olusola from a RUclips video where he was playing cello and beat boxing at the same time. And Kevin is talented in so many ways that I don't have the time to list them. Just know he puts over achievers to shame. Long story short, they sang, they won. All moved to L.A., record company dropped them shortly after they arrived, they didn't feel a cappella was saleable. They went on RUclips and started producing their own music and now fill auditoriums worldwide. There has only been one person changed since 2011, and that is Avi Kaplan, who left on amicable terms but with a sad heart still felt by all. He is doing his own music on his RUclips channel and also tours. Matt Salle joined them in late 2017 for their Christmas special and he became a member in 2018. Lots of music as a group, solo and with various other artist. They are amazing, hard working, young people. I can hardy wait until you get to meet the rest of the crew that lives in this rabbit hole. Amazing, hard working, and I call myself a PentaFry.
When I find myself really overwhelmed by one of their songs, I go through and watch the video one time for each member, just watching them and connecting what they are doing to their mouth movements.
Happy to have you here in the rabbit hole. You are a lot of fun to watch. They won their first Grammy for this song. (Three Grammys total so far.) There has only been one member change. Four of them have been there since the beginning: Scott, baritone, tall blonde guy. White hair here. Mitch, tenor, dark hair here. He changes his looks a lot. His hair has been dark, blonde, purple, etc. He even went through a bald phase. His jewelry varies a lot too. He is always there even if he looks a lot different. Kirstin (Cur-stin), mezzo soprano, the only woman. Changes her look a lot but it's always her. Kevin, beatboxer, cello, tenor. The only black guy in this video. Those four are always there, even if it doesn't look that way. Originally there was: Avi (ah-vee), bass, the guy with the cornrows here. He left the band in 2017 for personal reasons. He was replaced by: Matt, bass, a younger black guy. Different from Avi but lots of fun. Oh, it's "Pentatonix" or "PTX" not "The Pentatonix". Please keep reacting. It's a joy to watch you.
You have the most amazing smile, it lights up your face. Great reaction! Only one member ( the bass singer) left the group because of family reasons. Avi, the guy with the beard left but helped find his replacement Matt. The other four are original from 2011 when they competed in and won the Sing Off on tv. Their appearances can change a little over the years but the talent never does. You are now a Pentaholic for sure!
This arrangement is obviously Grammy winning, but experiencing it live in concert is the best. I've seen them eight times and they're amazing! They have opened with this song I think on two tours and always have it somewhere on their set list- they don't even have to think about it anymore. Its so tight
They opened the concert I went to with this song. It qas with Matt. Oh man it was not good 😂 but they just came off a break and they didn't let it effect them for the rest of the concert.
We are always happy to welcome a new Pentaholic to the fold. 😁 Your facial expressions reminded me of someone watching a magic show for the first time. 🤘🏻❤️
Isn’t this just pure fun?!! They really make you appreciate the qualities that each voice timber can bring. They are all individually amazing singer but, my goodness, what they can do together is just magic. 🤗
Great reaction!!! The only guy that offically changes is the original basso profundo Avi (Aahh Vee) Kaplan with Matt Sallee. Avi is the orignal bass. In this performance he has the cornrows. He left the band mid/late 2017 for personal reasons on good terms with his fellow bandmates. He also helped them find his replacement Matt Sallee. Avi now has a solo career. That would be another area for you to pursue once you are ready. Mitch (the tenor) and Kirsten Maldonado change their looks for almost every video so you may think they are different members but they are the same. Kevin is the beat boxer/cello boxer and Scott Hoying is the baritone and he did dye his hair white for this one. The group does donn the occasional costume. Daft Punk was filmed in Avi and Kevin's (roommates) apartment and was their first Grammy win.
Your smile says it all. Thanks. There is so much going on in this medley. I seem to catch some thing new every time I watch the video and I've watched it maybe 100 times. How about Can't Hold Us or an original of theirs, Sing for the next one.
There is a live version of this to prove they can do it live. It was recorded with a cell phone. I think they were backstage and sang it for some fans. Other than reverb they really do not manipulate what they do. Kevin the beatboxer is crazy talented. You should react to his cover of Down someday. He is a one man band.
They don't change out members- there was only one line up change. Back in 2017 their original Bass Avi left and Matt replaced him. The reason they all look so different is that they have been around for ten years now. This video is super old, that's why they look so young. I always recommend looking at the year of the video before you watch bc its easier to put it into perspective.
There is a video of them doing this in a green room, no mics, and apart from the beatboxing being quiet it sounds just the same! Search for Pentatonix Daft Punk private performance
Obviously great voices can make a great group but they rise above by their dedication to the group and their driven work ethic. The simple fact that they will Not do something in a video that can’t be done live (voice) is a level of professionalism that some fall short on
This was the video they won their first Grammy for. Their budget was $400, and the video was shot in a closet... (lol) Keep with the PTX reactions - if you are looking for something "club-ish" - take Pentatonix - "Love Again" for a spin (it's an original.)
Yet again, another great reaction from you! From one. Pentaholic to another.....welcome to the club. There seriously isn’t a song they’ve done that I haven’t loved, so Gold and Havana would be my suggestions. Thanks a bunch.
PTX started as a group of friends from Arlington, TX ( 3 first/core members - Scott, Kirstie and Mitch) Later entered into the reality show the Sing-off and needed something extra so they added a friend of a friend Avi for bass and interviewed Kevin for beat box, but kevin also sings and plays cello, so they entered Sing-off (2011) the reality show and (spoiler won it). The rest, as they say is history...I may have a bit of inaccuracies, that was going off memory....
Based on your reaction, I think that you would really enjoy their original song "Love Again!" The music video is in a similar style to this one and is just as amazing. Everything Pentatonix does is!!!
This is quite early in their success, so Avi Kaplan is the bass here. After leaving for personal reasons, he helped find Matt Sallee for bass, whom you saw in Sound of Silence.
They filmed this individually in separate locations with a $400.00 budget and they won a Grammy for this............ God Bless them, the emotional group-ever.
Loving your energy and enthusiasm! Members are Scott Hoying: baritone (tall blonde... white hair here, runs for DAYS! Sweet and funny!) Mitch Grassi: countertenor (black hair, white shirt, angelic voice, Sassy/Sweet QUEEN!) Kirstie (sounds like thirsty) Maldonado: messo-soprano (Beautiful voice, beautiful Princess! SO KIND!! Played on Broadway in Kinkyboots.) Kevin 'K.O' Olusola: Beatboxer, cello, cello-boxer, tenor, saxaphone, genius (fluid in Mandarin, was Pre-med at Yale), performed twice at Carnegy Hall as a teen/student ... amazing! (Wearing the glasses, allergic to the contacts)REALLY all around nice guy!! Married/new dad!! Avi Kaplan: Bass/basso-profundo (cornrows and beard) god tier deep voice, Opera trained, blows out sound systems at venues so they have to bring their own amps. Left group on good terms for personal reasons in 2017. SO SWEET!!! GREAT hugs!! Matt Sallee: Bass (Avi's replacement, fun, lively, friendly and sweet, recently engaged.)
The one with the white hair is Scott, baratone, will also sing Bass when Avi/Matt is singing. Tenor is Mitch, brown hair and a chameleon. If you ask is that Mitch, it is. Always changing his look. Beatboxer/cello is Kevin. Kirstie (sounds like thirsty) also changes her hair color a lot. In the earlier videos through 2017 the bass is Avi (the one with the beard) He left for personal/family reasons and Matt (also bass) joined the group. The other 4 have never changed. Avi or Matt help Keven with the percussions.
The ones in the Daft zpunk are the origional members. Avi, the man that does the bass decided to leave the group. It was under good feelings and he helped to find Matt his replacement. You saw Matt in the Sound of silence video. He was the man of color on the left side. ENJOY
Only one person has changed in the group since its inception in 2011 just before that season of The Sing Off (Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were 19 back then and were a trio in high school). In 2017, Avi left the group and he was replaced by Matt.
They are famous for their transitions of evolutions (from song to song)! Kevin the beatboxer swallowed a complete drumset...they all help with sounds when they are not singing...and always have a surprise or two...! It is the same ppl they are just fashionistas and dress the parts. The blue color is a tribute to Daft Punk. The only change in members was Avi to Matte back in 2017. Avi had a serious illness in the family and wanted to spend more time at home. Their evolution tracks are: The Evo. of Music, of Rhianna, Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson and another one that is skipping my memory. Avi Kaplan has his own channel and you can check out some of his work but esp. Change on the Rise. Kevin Olusola, Down. They recorded this song in the closet at Kevin and Avi's apt and edited it in the Kitchen soon after they won the Sing off season 3. Won a Grammy! Your reaction was priceless....enjoyed it immensely. Thank You!
They won a grammy for this one. It was made in one of their kitchen's with $400 as their venue let them down at the last moment. No instruments, completely a cappella and they sing this the same live, simulated record scratches and all! They're just unbelievable.
Oh, I am SO here for this. I love your enthusiasm for the music (and you have the best smile ever!) Subscribed and hit the notification bell. Welcome to the Pentaholics rabbit hole!
Avi, the bass singer (and sound effect helper) left the group several years ago, and they got a new guy, Matt. Other than that it's the same people. You're just being confused because Kirstie and Mitch are constantly changing their fashions. Kirstie tries on several hair colors and Mitch tries on several hair cuts (including bald for a bit). Mustaches, giant heart suits, huge hoop earrings and puffy silk pajamas, it's all still Kirstie and Mitch. (Kirstie never had a mustache lol).
Okay so, the five members you see here are the same ones in Hallelujah. Mitch, the one here with the short brown hair, scruffy face and white shirt is the same real skinny guy in Hallelujah that has the big hat on and sings really high. He's just lost a lot of weight. The only member that has changed is Avi, the bass singer. He left and was replaced with Matt.
You also need to add Home Free to your groups to react to. They won The Sing Off the year after the Pentatonix and have a very loyal fan base. Both groups are totally different but both are great!
Your reactions are very entertaining! You should see Down by Kevin Olusola (The beatboxer), he beatboxes, sings and plays the cello in the song! (Using a looper)
Great reaction...you've lots of covers to checkout but they're also bring out there own music. Have fun exploring and we Penthaholic's will be enjoying you're adventure with you
Thanks for bringing them back to me. I loved them on the sing off and happy they won. I've been on youtube recently trying to reconnect with music. They are extremely gifted.
Avi (the one with the beard) is a founding member of the group, but he left in 2017 amicably. Now Matt is doing the bass. So it all depends on when the video was made. Keep up the cool reactions, and welcome to the Pentaholics family!
DUUUUUDE!!! I was so hoping to see you react to this video! It's one of my fav, totally! And you are spot on, its incredible! Kevin & Avi just freaking NAIL IT with their bass notes, and Kevin's beatboxing is beyond incredible. (its ALWAYS incredible!) That man is just raw talent, and wait until you see his video where he plays his cello, her name is Beyoncé! #TrueStory You are so going down the PTX rabbit hole, and I'm following you now, just subbed to your channel because I can't wait to see what you are in store for and how you react. There is a veritable cornucopia of delights awaiting you!!! 🤣😂🤘😊👌😎👍

I definitely would not liken Mitch and Kirstie to chameleons, chameleons fade into the background, those two most definitely DO NOT.
This can be confirmed by the fact one of the ring lights can clearly be seen in the reflection of Kevin's glasses
They are VERY dedicated to not blinking. I am impressed.
Thank you so much for sharing this, I love finding the backstory.😃
You know your smile is contagious, right? Keep smiling! There's power in your joy! Great job!

The years pass and this medley still lives rent-free in my head.
Do you know why their label dropped them?
@@kaibest6560 As far as I know, they didn't know how to market them, they thought no one would be interested in their music.
@@angie44551 ahh thanks. Rip to that label then lmao

A good way to start is finding "Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix
" - gives you alle the detailes.
They filmed this individually in separate locations with a $400.00 budget and they won a Grammy for this............ God Bless them, the emotional group-ever.
That is called beat boxing. Avi and Kevin do the beat boxing.
Loving your energy and enthusiasm!
Members are Scott Hoying: baritone (tall blonde... white hair here, runs for DAYS! Sweet and funny!)
Mitch Grassi: countertenor (black hair, white shirt, angelic voice, Sassy/Sweet QUEEN!)
Kirstie (sounds like thirsty) Maldonado: messo-soprano (Beautiful voice, beautiful Princess! SO KIND!! Played on Broadway in Kinkyboots.)
Kevin 'K.O' Olusola: Beatboxer, cello, cello-boxer, tenor, saxaphone, genius (fluid in Mandarin, was Pre-med at Yale), performed twice at Carnegy Hall as a teen/student ...
Please understand...the more you listen the more you will understand. There is a lot to learn. They practice a lot and have a myriad of talents.
They are amazing .💙💙💙💙💙
ENJOY
Good call on the Headphones!🤣
Many reactors have been where you are, but FEW have been THIS enthusiastic!😃
Keep em coming!
Only one person has changed in the group since its inception in 2011 just before that season of The Sing Off (Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were 19 back then and were a trio in high school). In 2017, Avi left the group and he was replaced by Matt.
BRO... That frickin ADORABLE crooked smile Kirsten's got, though!! 😍😍😍😍
If you want to see more of what they can do you might want to check their cover of Can't Hold Us
That moment you looked at us like "what the actual??" 🤣🤣 great reaction! Mitch changed his look often, same great voice
The beat boxer also sings when he plays the cello. Beautiful!
I'm here for daft punk.
They did a good tribute.
Thank You!
I think you'd like their cover of Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" it's great!
Great reaction as usual man. This rabbit hole is hundreds of songs deep, I hope u enjoy it as much as most!
Loved your reaction! So fun!
Congratulations! You have joined the ranks of the Pentaholics!
I can’t even imagine the practice that goes into that. It’s crazy. I just love them ❤️
They won a grammy with this one
There's a RUclips of their performance of this live at the Grammys where they won.
Live.
And they sound just like the video. 😳😎☺️
You also need to add Home Free to your groups to react to. They won The Sing Off the year after the Pentatonix and have a very loyal fan base. Both groups are totally different but both are great!
YASSSSSS, headphones!!!!!!!!! OMG, your expressions are so joyful. Making my heart happy!
Your reactions are very entertaining! You should see Down by Kevin Olusola (The beatboxer), he beatboxes, sings and plays the cello in the song! (Using a looper)
I think its very safe to say you too have now become a Pentaholic
They won a Grammy for this one.
Hi, love your reaction.. All the way from SA. 🇿🇦
Great reaction...you've lots of covers to checkout but they're also bring out there own music. Have fun exploring and we Penthaholic's will be enjoying you're adventure with you
Just wanted you to know I subscribed from watching your PTX videos.. so much fun watching someone discover them. Welcome to the fam!
I really LOVE your reactions on Pentatonix. Greetings from one Pentaholic to another.
I really Love your smile and how you enjoy to listen to them, too. 🤗
Keep smilin" !!
Before late 2017 you will find avi is the bass after that Matt took over. Avi left for personal reasons on good terms
