Winter tyres help cars stay mobile in wintery and snowy conditions, but at what price? Due to the siping needed for the winter tires to work in snow and ice, a winter tire often makes a cars steering feel light and vague, which is the last thing you want on a supercar like the Porsche 992 911 Carrera 2S.
Modern ultra high performance winter tyres promise to retain steering and handling feel, while allowing the car to be used in the snow, and the new Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 is one of the best at this. To find out exactly how good they are, I drive a Porsche 992 911 Carrera 2S from England, to the Swiss part of the Alps, and document the journey including steering feel, snow and ice performance, handling, comfort, noise etc.

Well, I'm a long-time Porsche driver and I'm living in Austria. Here it is quite normal to put winter tires on our cars and drive up into the mountains for a bit of skiing. Porsches are born here in the Alps. You might know that the first Porsche sports cars manufactured after the war were manufactured in Gmünd, Carinthia (Austria). The 911 is especially good on snow and ice, due to the weight distribution - it really digs into the surface. There are also special winter trainings offered by Porsche for its customers. The trainings take place either in the Alps or in the north of Sweden (close to Kiruna). They are great fun - and very useful if you suddenly come across a bit of snow in winter. One thing is true: you need the right tires, this is correct. I prefer Michelin too, but there is a whole range of winter tires approved by Porsche for driving in real wintery conditions. It is also not only snow and ice, where winter tires have an advantage, it is also the temperature. Summer tires simply to not work so good when below freezing point. So, to wrap it up, no need to be afraid in the snow with a Porsche, especially a 911. ;-).... PS; I currently own a Carrera S Cabriolet (992). Yes, the rear-wheel --driven version. You are getting around quicker with the 4S on snow, but it is more fun with the 2.
He's driving a 2s too:-)
Happy to hear this as I also have a newly-purchased 992 GTS Cabriolet and plan to drive it in the winter in NYC and in its 2-hour radius.
Driving a supercar with summers in snow is what ruins them.
Touche!
Yes, if you are unlucky you can literally ruin them and pay for the repairs later.
some people still do it 🤣 weather always beats the car no matter the price..
only on rear wheel drive ;-)
@@kareldegreef3945 not really, on my 2017 golf R, it still makes a big difference.
A suggestion for a future video:
Runflat vs conventional tyres. Same brand same model, and usual testings; subjective feel, lap times, braking distances...
I suggest 18" wheels (not too sporty, but relatively well sized)
Love your videos by the way!
This please :)
Agree.
I think this channel deserves to have at least more than one million subscribers. The test and reviews are well professionally done. The production of these videos is another incredible story.
Thank you :)
I could never have thought that watching tyre reviews could be so interesting. But they are. A great watch and totally absorbing. But better still have a real life, practical application. Who doesn’t want to give their car and passengers the best grip, traction, cornering and braking in all weathers? You’ve changed my thinking and my tyre buying. Thank you.
Very kind, thank you :)
I have these tyres on my A6 allroad, for everyday driving in winter conditions they are amazing, maybe a bit OTT for UK weather though.
If we do ever get snow again you'll be unstoppable! Wait, stoppable? As you can brake on snow?
@@tyrereviews an unstoppable juggernaut or was it a stoppable juggernaut a wise man once said?
Keep up the good work.
@@jezzajames Wow, 10/10 memory!
Same tyres on my A4 avant 3.0 very good
I had the same experience in Grindelwald. Came in at night and woke up to some of the most spectacular scenery I've ever seen. Unreal place.
We all know it was really just an excuse to have a free rental that you can trash around a track for your ski trip :)
Nice video though!
Don't tell anyone...
@@tyrereviews you'll have to tell me about that "testing rim protection" things for that :D
This is the video I was waiting for and we spoke about Jonathan 😁 just 30 mins of where we live. Go watch this video tonight , i’m already exciting 😃 snowy regards from Lake Brienz , Switzerland 🇨🇭
I hope it meets expectations :)
Impressive. I’m a strong advocate for winters on any car, since discovering what they do for my BWM. For the conditions they are needed for, theres no hope of going anywhere on warm weather tyres, and for the vast majority of the time, you cant use maximum performance on any tyre anyway, so the loss is absolutely minimal. Very good review and range of tests again, almost scientific, keep it up.
Thank you Andy :)
brilliant video once you have tried winter tyres in the snow there’s no going back and you didn’t even have the 4 wheel drive 911
Corvette C8 and 911 S perform great on snow with winter tires. The only problem is ground cleanrace
I'm a little bit subjective, because i'm a 996 owner. But thank YOU for this video in particular. And of course for all your job on this channel.
And sorry for the bad english, from a french viewer.
Merci beaucoup!
you are subjective, yet giving 0 opinion? does not compute.
@@dushk0 I said subjective to like this video in particular, because it's a 911.
To talk about the MICHELIN Alpin 5, my expérience says it's a very good choice. All my cars fit this types during winter season. And i am never been in default. I also recommend this manufacturer.
I came for the tyre reviews but stayed for the scenery...my word, that's a beautiful part of the World. And it took me 10 hours to get to Preston once, so...
Preston has it's own beauty... probably
As someone who drives in snow often, there are a few info that might interest you:
Snow isn't that slippery
Different types of snow have different grip
I've found salted roads to be sometimes very slippery
Patches of ice can be the scary part, and it feels like whatever the tyre, you don't have grip on it
All good information
Pirelli Sottozero 3's are a great 'high performance' snow tire as well. I have them on my GTI and never think "I better let up on this corner because I'm on snow tires". Excellent high speed stability too. They grip really well in the cold, wet or dry. I had Blizzak WS80's on a MINI Cooper S and they were 'anti-performance' in every way except snow. Squishy feedback, uneasy at speed and very little dry grip. I've yet to encounter deep snow with the Pirelli's but I'd imagine they're "good". Coastal Southern New England doesn't get a lot of snow and 95% of the time the roads aren't snow covered. We'll get 1-3 "big" snowstorms a year. I'll take the small compromise in snow traction for better everyday performance. They'll still run circles around the best all-season in snow and ice.
I have a stage-2-tuned B8 S4 and live on a mountain in Western Canada. Most of the winter it rains but often the last km of my trip up the mountain turns to snow. I've been looking for a new set of winter tires and really appreciate your video. Will definitely check these out.
Glad you found it useful!
I just bought 4 of theese in 245/40-19 for my 300hp/600nm VW Passat 4Motion.
Im going skiing in a few weeks, and can't wait to try them out 😍👌
Nice! Let me know how you find them!
@@tyrereviews I will 👍
I live in Northern Denmark. The weather is just as the UK. Rain, gray and - 5 to 10 degrees in the winter not a lot of snow because of the sea. And so far, in theese conditions, they have been very nice!
I'm very excited to see how they preform in more "winter'ish" conditions 😁👌
where do you go skiing from denmark?
@@t-bone9239
Well, most go to Norway or Sweden.. But a drive through Germany into the Alps are a good (but long) option too.
Er are going to Norway in week 5 👍
Im loving your channel. I really appreciate your actual testing in rigid conditions. I'd love to see you do a video on airing down for snow driving. Keep up the good work!
I tried to make that video and it barely made a difference
@@tyrereviews Thanks a ton for the reply. If its not worth a video its prolly not worrying about. Thanks!
I have this exact set up on my 991.1 C4S and constantly get people questioning me driving in the snow. The reality is its the best winter driving vehicle I've ever owned.
Just don't try reversing down a narrow steep icely road. No weight over the front means the front slides out pretty easily when braking!
Whoever was in charge of speccing this car was obviously a legend, blowing Michelins test budget on a sports exhaust for their 911 test car.
Final spec was £110,000! It had the sports seats and bose too :)
Tyre Reviews it also has the Porsche impressed on the headrest etc., really expensive that. Don’t ask me why I know...
One of my favourite places in the world. Fab to see you doing a tyre test under Eiger. Going there in a couple of weeks, will see how the Bridgestone A005 weather control’s work on the Alfa in some fine Swiss snow!! Love the channel, keep up the fab work!
Oooo, let me know how you get on with them! :)
Fabulous review as always, and so glad you’re elated by the natural beauty & scenery. I thinks it’s absolutely stunning too!
I thought I saw:
An elderly local guy looking at you like 'wtf are you doing?'
Porsche hubcap pointing the wrong way.
'Closed to all vehicles' sign on the snow covered road.
Nice video. Hope you enjoyed Switzerland. 😄
It's a beautiful place, always a pleasure to work there
Great video as always. The rim protectors on the Michelins are worth the value of the tire! They have them on the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ too.
I was so happy they were there... maybe more than once :(
So I just realized at the end of the video..... he is driving a regular S. It's not even a 4s..... wild. Have to love michelin tires.
seeing a sports car at a ski resort always makes feel good
Hi Jonathan. Have you considered doing a video on tyrepressure and how it affects grip and handling on snow and ice?
I tried to make one last year but it wasn't a very good video. Tyre pressure changing with summer tyres made very little difference. I'll try again this year :)
use winter or all-weather and inflate a bit higher than summer tires
I like the parts without annoying background music most.
Some lovely hero level driving around curborough there! well done :)
Thanks :)
Another great vid. Love it
"Who would win a fight between a crocodile and a grizzley bear"....this is what your tyre tests are the equivalent of. The tests that nobody really knows the answer to, as nobody has ever had the balls to put it into practice!
Jokes aside, very informative as usual. I currently use Nokian weatherproof SUV's on my SQ5. I would definitely like to try the Michelins. As they are my go to for summer tyres.
What sort of bear? I think a polar bear would be a medium sized crocodile but maybe a big crocodile would beat a brown bear?
Tyre Reviews 😂 there you have it. Your next review! Finding a crocodile in the arctic would definitely go viral.
The bear.
I would love to see breaking tests of snow tires in the wet and on dry maybe even a moderately warm day.
Great video thanks as always.
Just saw the Nokian 6 tire video. That was perfect thanks. Looks like summer tires in the snow is way more dangerous than snow tires in the dry and wet
Also check out the temperature braking video, should answer more questions
watching this from Canada makes this looks like child's play. i look outside and see a lot more snow.
Yeah but between Switzerland and Canada nobody wants to see your country
I read this and thought about when I was about to lose the rear on the Lusso on summer tyres. It was a 6 c day with light moist weather. MPS4S were no bueno.
These videos are so entertaining.
Thank you!
What a trip!
What scenery 😍
991.2 Carrera 2 on Conti 830p here. Similar epic performance in those conditions 🤓
Rim protection always good, if you don’t remember to book the ‘High Vehicle’ carriage 🤔
Squeezing past the toilets is never fun in wider cars!
Well done, really enjoyed that 👊🏻
It was narrow, but the car parks were more of an issue in Switzerland... the rim protectors definitely saved me :)
Thankful.
Hi,
in this difficult moment for all of us, I find your chanel and review like escape from every day strugle.
Have a lot of question about tyres, but now it s not a good time for it.
Best of luck, keep up with good job.
It's always a good time to ask about tyres :)
@@tyrereviews Ok than. You 're probably right.
Having all seasons Michelin Crossclimate 235/50 R18, which are prety good but very loud on my S-max; great extra load for towing... which one do you recomend for summer tyre? Can I (even if it's not recomended by manufacter) put same inches but lower profile tyres? (235/45 R18). What will happen if you put other number if not recomended?(safety, fuel cons., stability...)
I would like to know and learn those things. Was thinking about PS4 or Conti sport contact, but I think those tyres are not made for that kind of car. This is looooong family car, not super sport vehicle. Than I was thinking about Primacy 4 for great allrounder, than I don t know anything about Hankook (everybody says great value for money)....so I m kinda lost.
Thank you.
Love your video. Good content and you come across like a top bloke
I hope this upcoming summer we can see a 140-200tw tire showdown :)
So many great competitors - Falken RT615K, Hankook RS4, Direzza ZIII, Bridgestone RE-71R, Yokohama AD08R and the new A052, Federal 595 RS-RR and the new RS-Pro, and the list goes on...
Some of those are US only, and getting them all in the same size can be tricky :/
Tyre Reviews - darn! I got too excited and forgot the EU and US markets are quite different. Someone needs to fly you here to the US because your reviews are phenomenal. Or I need to find a channel called “Tire” Reviews instead 😆
@@MrBillDaBear Watch this space... ;)
Here's an idea for a vid J. So much info on tread, grip, traction, sipes. So it'd be cool to drive a tyre onto a glass panel and show from below the area of the tire's 'foot' with the weight of the car on it and how the shape adapts. The spread of the tyre might even change with temp difference ( less surface area with summer tyres at say 0degrees). Keep up the good work 👍
Oh & another - Info on the speed rating of tyres. Was looking at sourcing tyres from a local garage -tyres were only available in a H rating and not the V rating spec from manufacturer. He reconed, no prob as wouldnt be driving at maximum H speeds anyway. Surprisied me since the speed rating is about more than speed alone. So a lot of mis-conceptions out there.
Great idea, I did something similar to this in the tyre width video if you'd like to see different footprints
Welcome to Switzerland, hope you like(d) it :)
Your noise laws and speed restrictions are pure lunacy. No thanks.
As always, great review. I enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Thank you!
UK testing winter tires, ehe!
You guys get like 2cm slush 1 day a year? Come to Norway next time, here everybody has one extra set of wheels with winter tires.
Great review. Grindewald is a town on gran turismo 2 cargame. Fun fact. Only note i have: theese tires are not at all good on clear ice. But snow/slush and wet and cold tarmac they are perfekt. And more suitable for a sportscar than a soft winter tyre. A other thing is that I would never use a expensive sportscar on snow and ice because of salt they use. Ruins the car. Personally i would rather have a more dedicated winter tyre, like the X-ice, and have more safe winter driving, and otherwise take it more easy on the tarmac. Who is taking their car to the limit on tarmac?? Its better to have a safer tyre for snow and ice. And therefore the pilot alpin 5 is not for me.
What about a comparison between Crossclimate and Pilot Alpin5??
Please test Runflat-Tyres vs. non Runflat.
Clothing inverse to the weather outside. The colder it is, the less he wears.
That w is pronounced a v - vald. That’s my playground just thirty minutes from where I live on Lake Thun ( Thunersee )
I had some of the alpine 4's on my SS when I drove it thru the ALCAN in the winter months. A'hum It drove very well especially at 130+ mph on the ice/snow. LoL. Great tires and handled way better then I would with the power to weight ratio with about 15-17psi.
Based on a previous video you did I went ahead and fitted Michelin Cross climates to our SUV in anticipation of winter in Wales but on New Years day we were on Black Rock sands beach we drove over two miles on a combination of dry and wet sands and I was surprised at how good they were I got into some fairly deep soft sand and had no loss of traction at all, way better than the previous visit on summer tyres. Just waiting for some snow and ice now. Wet grass also great.
Great! :) If you ever get time feel free to leave a review on www.tyrereviews.com
Tried to but it kept saying unable incorrect word entered on verification, tried 3 times sorry.
Thank you for the video. I drive a 500+ hp rear wheel drive in Finland as a daily. I've been using nordic studless winter tires (Nokian Hakkapelitta R2 and Continental Viking Contact 7) and they really ruin the sporty feel of the car. On the other hand, the noise level goes down a lot compared to the Pilot Super Sport summer tires and I can't complain about the grip. However, I've now run into a problem, both Nokian and Continental have stopped making these tires (in the right size) and I wondering do I dare try the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s in Finland. Are the Finnish conditions just too much for the tire or do they actually work?
If you need a lot of snow in Switzerland go to st moritz
Holy shit never thought a porsche would look so good in white + being dirty
I have a set of of studded winter tyres on my 991 T. Don’t see what all the fuss about. No problems driving up in Swedish Lapland in the winter.
That's very cool!
Studded are so much better in my opinion, but they are not allowed in many countries. I have Nokian R2 on wife's Q5 and Goodyear Ultragrip Arctic 2 on my Camry , and Camry drives much more stable in winter though it is FWD only.
Those tyres are Euro speced ones, if you can find a Nordic spec friction (you can find studded tires but it's illegal in everything south of Denmark), it's not as good in terms of "feel" but preformance on snow and ice is way better.
Currently have pilot alpin pa 4's on my 991 4s cabriolet. Its my daily driver. Pretty much required. I think they are great tires for everyday in the winter for my car.
amazing video. again!
Real testing and great to understand, just need a supercar!
try using nordic tires front and semislick rear with rwd car on dry warm track.just want to see how understeery will it be
Have the Michelin Pilot Alpins on the M2, a stunning tyre... keeps the daily moving no matter the weather!
Glad you like them! If you get time feel free to leave a review on www.tyrereviews.com !
Great video - some feedback: the music I feel was a bit loud at the beginning, and it was a little hard to hear your voice as clearly.
Otherwise, super entertaining and informative!
Thank you for the feedback :)
A 4S on winter tires are absolute monsters in snow. 2S not so much.
yes they do. never had even close to my summer tyres winter tyre on my (not supercar, but fast) car
But you don't crash in snow which is a bonus :)
Awesome review 👌
I’m up to get a Porsche Taycan in January and thinking about to get these tyres, living in middle of Sweden. Seems to work on snow and little ice 👍🏼😀
Niceeee
If you are driving a car like that in snow and ice you are driving the wrong car, not just the wrong tires. Sure, you might get by with snow tires and careful driving if the road is just a bit icy or hard packed, but if it is unplowed or snowing heavily, you are going to be high centered and stuck.
996 Turbo :) AWD + Alpine 4s. Never an issue ;)
Very cool!
Driving a sports/supercar with winter tyres is incredibly fun and brings the limits of adhesion down to legal road speeds. You can feel the fundamental balance and handling of the car without needing to push it too hard. I think all sports/supercar owners should drive their cars with winters; they'll be better drivers as a result.
It was rather fun on track... :)
Marcus Lim You do not need much power in winter.
Lots of power make throttle control only a lot more harder.
XtreeM FaiL I didn’t say lots of power was required. And even it there was lots of power, it doesn’t make throttle control harder. A well calibrated throttle is a well calibrated throttle regardless of power.
GREAT VIDEO!
Wow, you meet the Yeti monster 👾, brilliant car 🚙 in that environment 😀
Just shared your video on a Skoda Yeti FB group, who knows, maybe more subscribers 😎
Haha amazing, thank you!
Good afternoon you should put those tires again the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 & to do the Top 5 Winter Tyre. & with testing use an AUDI to get a good 4WDR please let know
That would be a great test
that road in switzerland, that is how our main roads look like during winter. so would you recommend these tyres for everyday driving on main roads like that, where you have uphills, downhills, trucks, buses and full traffic on snowy and icy roads?
I am wondering here if there is any advantage in changing the wheels to a smaller size with a higher profile but narrower winter tyre, or whether the same size as original is just as good. Have you done a video about this already, what are your thoughts about this ??
Already done a video, check it out :) The short answer is that there's not that much of a difference, so whatever works best. The important thing is changing the tyres
Awesome video.
Thank you!
would you recommend crossclimate tires on a sportscar like 911 or M2? for someone not using their sports car on a track, but who may need traction on the snow.
This, the Continental WinterContact TS860S and the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance.
@@tyrereviews but then i will need to change for summer tires... i was hoping that the cross climate could do it all...
What a great job.
I had such a great experience with my cayman 981 and continental ts830, on snow mountain roads once 20 mph has been reached it is really possible to have fun and you reach almost in mid straight 50 mph which was my speed limit I set for safety general reasons. I bet a 911 is even better in terms of traction. I am still wondering if for my 992 I should go for WT for that winter?
Perfect !
Are the Pirelli Sottozero 3's comparable to the Alpine 5's? I needed winter tyres to get my Z4 legally across Germany and Poland, and that's what I ended up with. Tested them on damp 6 degree roads last night, and they grip like what I imagine a qualifying tyre does - they're actually tacky to touch from cold. Quite looking forward to driving them in snow.
Great video!
Great video! Can I get away wearing it in the summer too!?
It's not advised
Well done!
Thank you!
Great videos thank you! I'm struggling to fine the difference between Cross Climate 2 and these Alpine 5s? They are for a GR Yaris. Just had the scariest drive of my life in the current weather conditions on my current PS4S, and need to swap ASAP.
Why would you even with winter tires? Its a sports car meant for performance driving. I store my GTS for the winter and use my SUV that can handle 12-plus inches of snow on the road.
Crashing headfirst into a wall is ruining supercars
Beat the french...with Michelin tyres on. Hmm...

i had on my BMW 745d E65 21" Tires from Kinforest (KF550) I had to say that that are the best Tires i ever got! Pls test it! They are not expensive, cost arround ~120€ /1Tire for 21inch !
I wonder how much faster you would be on that track with summer tires???
GREAT CHANNEL- Did you get a video testing Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs Michelin Pilot Cup 2 Track connect vs Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 vs others for track day events? I'm running Michelin Pilot Sport 4S thanks to your reviews for daily and track but now considering buying a set of something for track only that I can get use for several track events. If you ever get to Southeast US you can drive my car ( 400HP 430FTLBS VW GTI with coilovers) to test tires I just can't afford sets of tires for that. Michelin should chip in lol. Thanks, David
Great Video as always.
Looking to get some 17 inch winter wheels for my BMW 220i coupe.
Would you recommend these tires,Crossclimate or something else?
Mostly south UK use but will be going Switzerland & Germany this winter.
Many thanks
If you're hitting some skis resorts etc, I'd use a more winter bias all season tyre like the Conti AllSeasonContact
Many thanks
I have Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 in 245/35 R19, which are quite decent for dry and wet cornering for a winter tire. How much is there a difference between those and the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5? Is the Alpin 5 the newer version? Thanks and as always very good and high quality video :)
Do a video on tire shelf life and safety on that
Hey! Great video as always. Its winter still but will you do some summer tyre testing videos? Whats your plans for that? Cheers!
Lots of plans, summer, track, all season, it should be a good year :)
Grindelwald? Gran Turismo 2! 😊
Was it a circuit? I used to play that religiously!!
If you have lowered the car and you have winter tires or the best one than also you can’t drive on the snow believe me the problem is more the lowered car not only the tires
hahaha good point
there is no "dry"- performance in winter, i don't understand why not having winter tires is even an option
Totally agree. And on top of that, winter tires are more suited for cold weather than summer tires. So it is ice, snow and cold temperatures where they shine.
@@gletschertroll also as a sidenote, who actually thinks of drivingperformance when driving in winter haha. it's way more fun to drive carefully when you know your wheels could break out any moment (in snowy conditions like in the video at least)
A friend of mine claims that 3 year old winter tires are useless on snow, and new summer tires would beat them.
Have you considered testing this? Like, worn winter tires vs new summer or all-season tires.
It's on the list. At 3 years aging hasn't really taken a toll so it's more what tread depth is left after 3 years.
I love your videos, really informative, great content, I have one question, what's happening with the M3 track car?
I am HOPEFULLY filming this in April. It's been a tricky one to fit in
