I just love the "Porsche way of thinking" in general. Small car Big power RWD And just to be "German" about it....they put the engine BEHIND the rear axle!!! And the styling. It has a "cute VW Beetle" look to it.....but you can just tell, that thing means business.
Takes me back to the '60s and my old 356 which then was just a used car. Ran it in winter with reg tires since as a student could not afford snow tires. Drove it everywhere including from Toronto to Mt. Tremblant in Quebec (about 600 km) over Christmas break to go skiing. The things you do when you're 21....and survive.
I litteraly was pondering to myself if it was worth it buying an used 911 for Montreal lol I was about to give up honestly. Until I saw this video and you guys' comments
I lived in France near the Alps for 3 years with a BMW (also a RWD car) and winter / snow tyres made it absolutely no problem - but also it was a legal requirement to change tyres during winter. Something the UK doesn't do yet. People underestimate winter tyres.
Your winter videos are the best especially when the latest 911 is involved. This is the best Christmas gift I could get when Covid international travel restrictions are in place for someone in Australia.
@@carswithluke The idea is pretty cool. However, I wonder if it presents a danger to the structural integrity of the glass itself. I assume that it acts like a reverse spoiler at higher speeds and at a certain point it could probably suck out the whole glass panel out, or at least crack it.
I can’t stop admiring such a beautiful statement of art. What an iconic car it is. It just exudes elegance and agility in a way that no other car does.
Driving a RWD BMW and having driven one for years, I must say the Tyre width really plays an important part in how much traction you get on snow. My 320d wears 215/55/17 during the winter and I literally never had traction issues so far. I bet that Porsche had at least 275/35/20 which makes it rather tricky...
They're superb on snow! With winter tyres, of course. I drove up to a ski lift in the UK last year (try not to laugh, they do exist!) with a snowboard on the roof of my then 911. Passed a family walking up the track, and when we all got to the top they told me they'd left their 4x4 in the valley below. They were astonished the 911 got up there 😂
This is literally my dream car, Zürich is awsome ... have friends there, greetings from Austria :-) I love that someone is simply using a car like this as a daily driver and enjoying it no matter what instead of "saving it" for the nice weather days of the year. It looks incredible in the snow with the snowboard attached to it. :-)

Nice one Luke. Drove my rwd BMW 325ci all over the Alps in heavy winter conditions, and never once had to put chains on with winters. 205 section tyres, a lot narrower than those ones help a lot.
I love winter landscapes and a Porsche. You have outdone yourself with this one Luke! Please consider making longer videos. The analytics reccomend shorter videos but some of us prefer longer content. Either way, great work!
It’s not always how fast or how beautiful a car or anything else is, it’s how it goes into your heart. It gets your inner self and you feel comfortable with it. Porsche has always knew this and applied this in its cars
I think the 911 is the dream daily driver! It works so well in literally just about anything as long as you have the right tires! Track day, snow day, commuting, road trips, and everything else! Awesome video!
RWD car and snow = fun. Drive since 30 years RWD cars in the snow and this is the best. I can remember a time I beat a Audi S4 quattro with a BMW 323ti on a mountain road. Also fun spickes at my Toyota Corolla AE86, Subarus no problem.

Hi Luke. The ultimate winter driving test is not going up the mountain but going down. With the weight in the rear that could be quite tricky. I have a Porsche with winter tyres as well and carry a set of chains - just in case.

First tip reduce tire air pressure. You can also by a mobile electric tire pump. Next tip tire socks or chains. This really helps a lot with heavy snow. But my choice would be a Porsche 911 Dakar.
Just got to have winter tires and make sure not to get stuck or driving on black ice or ice. Make sure to give her plenty of space for stopping and never drive too fast in corner but yeah, it works!

Winter driving in a RWD car is so much fun! My dad used to have RX7s when I was a teenager and we'd drive it year round in Quebec and now I have a GT86 and it's a joy to drive in the snow! I'd dream to have a Porsche!

I remember seeing old footage of original Beetles driving around in the snow with no problem... the engine hanging out over the rear wheels has always made beetles (and 911s) good snow cars. Only issue I can see might be ground clearance on unplowed roads or parking lots. I wonder if having the front axle lift option would help in some of those situations?
I'm mesmerized by the red light bar not bleeding over into the green and blue channels - a very rare thing to see. Obviously the result of oodles and oodles of dynamic range and knowing how to set exposure.
You can drive just about any car in the snow with the correct tires and a semi-plowed road. It's not that complicated or special. Literally just tire dependant..

This is great! I have driven all my Porsches in the winter and now I have an a Aston Martin vantage with snow tires and its a hoot. So many people store their cars and barely put any miles on their cars. What's the point of owning a beautiful fun car and not drive it. There are probably a handful of days you can't drive the car, most of the times the roads are plowed nicely and quickly. Put some snow tires on and you will have lots of fun. Just drive the bloody car, instead of buying an expensive paper weight.
I live in Montreal and drove a rear wheel drive bmw for several years. With winter tires it can be done quite easily. Parking is when you run into the most problems if trying to get into or out of a spot with a lot of snow. Ended up trading to an Audi for year round convenience and I’ve got to say that with a set of Michelin Pilot winter tires it’s a hell of a lot more fun. There’s nothing I look forward to more than a snow day!

I drive a 21 F-Type 2litre RWD daily in Canada which means snowy/icey/frigid winters and it's doable. Winter tires, control your speed, be mindful of the conditions (avoid driving in really bad conditions if you can avoid it), and give yourself some extra travel time.

Porsche did a 911 for the Dakar rally. Getting a 911 and having high ground clearance might not be what people want though.

I drive my 2017, RWD Carrera 12 months a year in New York/USA. Put on the Pirelli Sottozeros and I'm good to go. Love it.
