Should You Buy The 2021 Bentley Bentayga V8 Over a Range Rover, or Porsche Cayenne Turbo? (Review)

- In today's video, courtesy of the good people at Bentley, I am driving the newly facelifted and updated Bentayga. Now available in Europe only in V8 or hybrid form, can this car really justify its higher list price over its VAG sister cars including the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi SQ7?

Three thumbs up for doing a great job every single day. Super variety. And every day, better and better.👍👍👍🙋♂️
Just found your channel James and it's great to finally find someone who isn't an annoying stereotypical youtuber.
I'm glad that you're starting to make the presenting style your own instead of trying to be too similar to Clarkson, you're good enough that you don't need to copy anyone else :) Keep up the good work.
Just found the channel yet you’re already up to speed with his idiosyncrasies?
@@MercSLRFan maybe he just found about it a week ago and watched 10s of videos since?:)
@@MercSLRFan Having watched only a few of his older videos it was pretty obvious who his inspiration was.
Please don't take my comment in the wrong way though, I wasn't trying to hate or anything, I think this channel is great and enjoy his content.

The mums at the school see him as some kind of god he's saying mums at school will flock around him because he thinks mums are desperate because he's driving a Bentley how degrading is that his ego has no boundaries just do the job without you being a god
We had a 2018 Q7 with air suspension and my mate had this Bentley and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference in ride quality or hushness. Did smell better !
my freind bought a bentley so i bought 3 Audi Q7s ,
The Cayenne and 1st gen Bentayga have identical ride quality too. To say the Bentayga rides better is just a product of the imagination.
I love smelling my armpits and bentley interior

It's the Bentley Bodega -- a small grocery store on wheels.
Another brutally honest review 👍👍
I suspect people also frequently stopped & stared at the Elephant Man... it's just not in a good way. 🙈
I hate SUVs with a passion. Unless people need a high vehicle for access due to limited mobility I don’t see the point of them. Otherwise get an estate.
Some say they need an SUV for safety. But only need an SUV for safety from being hit by another SUV. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy.
Rant over.
Come and drive on south Italian roads You'll be begging for an SUV in ten minutes
Lol, maybe YOU don't need an SUV, but tons of people all over the world need them (not necessarily a Bentayga) for their daily task where they live. THINK!
@@JasonWaterfalls13 If they need them, they need a UV, not an SUV... SUV therefore: still pointless.
Wow with that grill it reminds me of a routemaster bus.
Talking of new roads, if you fancy travelling down to Wiltshire there is a great one between Westbury and Pewsey, through Bratton, Eddington, earlestoke and other villages that escape my mind. Full of elevation, dips, apexes, tight twists, long straights, long winding corners, all with an incredible view of green hills, historic architecture. A very underrated road to spend a few hours with. As a kid, I only had the use of a diesel vectra C and a crew cab transit but loved every moment I had there. The bonus is where you pass Pewsey and find more great views to explore
That is a good bit of road.
The only reason why I’ve had mainly SUVs is that I actually like their looks. I really love bigger cars and never been a fan of normal sedans. 🤷♂️
I want to see more about that orange 350z hiding in the background

The excitement of seeing a luxury brand isn't what it was, they're all a bit ostentatious now instead of interesting
Perhaps it's related to them being 'brands' not 'companies'.
There is NO sense of them being made with interest, by hand, to the bet of the ability of the makers.
They are just names, badges and stickers, on consumer goods; regardless of the craft or money spent in making, it's still just 'a brand'.
Applies to LVMH, VAG, Stellantis, GM, Fenway, IHG, IAG, the whole world, really.
@@OsellaSquadraCorse Yep. It is like going into an eye-ware shop today. Everything is just cheap plasticky crap that is made in China, but they have "prestige" brands on them to fool idiots into thinking they are buying luxury. Giant profit margins.
Bloody hell when was Bentley not ostentatious in the WHOLE history of the brand? They went to Lemans with a truck sized race car with such a big bright polished grill that was almost the bigger than the Bugattis at the race.
The others are trying to be ostentatious, Bentley (and Rolls) is just staying true to what they always were.
Bentley made all the essentials options to remind you that they are in fact owned by Germans.
I hate 4X4's for all of those reasons and the fact that their "off road" ability is laughable, what I do like is meeting one coming the other way down a single track road when driving my 12 Tonne Unimog, they're that used to bullying everybody else on the road it's amusing to see the role reversal!😉😀
Finally, a Bentley delivered to be reviewed in G R E E N🔥🔥🔥
Loved the SUV rant at the beginning.
When I had younger kids and we went on family driving holidays the 2 Honda SUVs we had were absolutely brilliant. But as soon as kids were older & driving themselves I couldn’t wait to get out of the SUV and into something fun and now have a manual M140i 😎. Despite the 3000cc turbo charged engine it’s actually more economical than the CRV because it is smaller & more aerodynamic. Lots more fun to drive too.
Just do not get the hate for SUV’s. Typically no bigger footprint than an equivalent estate car, certainly no heavier than most premium electric cars, better visibility, easier to load, fantastic at towing and typically more comfortable. Down sides, higher running costs, do not handle quite as well as equivalent sized cars and slightly slower but in the real world of ever decreasing speed limits and other restrictions these thing matter little. I run a Q7 and find it easier to park and manoeuvre than an A6 avant. I am all about choice though and appreciate that they are not for everyone but I do not complain about people driving around in ridiculously wide two seater Italian exotics with even poorer eco credentials :-)
For many, SUVs are symbolic of a more opulent world they are excluded from, often through poor life decisions they've made along the way. These SUVs and their drivers become a focal point for their frustrations at their own lack of achievement. Screw 'em.
Your range rover reliability/brand loyalty rant at 13:30 perfectly encapsulates the GM/ford/chrysler fan bois in the US. They will vehemently defend which ever of those their daddy and grand daddy owned as superior despite the fact they are all basically the same fast food level of quality.
Complaining your Range Rover is unreliable is a classicly English. Like complaining that your large house is a full time job to clean. I have a secret theory that actually 90% of Range Rovers are perfectly reliable and people who have them keep quiet, you just hear the ones who have them and break complain, thats 5%.
Then the ones who bought them and found they couldn't afford to run them, so blame reliability for the reason they now drive a Honda, that's the other 5%. 😃
I don’t watch all your videos but you are very good at it you deserve more subscribers than you have
During the summing up I wanted to hear "Is this Bentley going to be my new daily driver? Yes. Yes it is.". 8)
Love the content (the HGV coming the other way!), and also dislike SUVs.
Poor fuel consumption and being green coming from the fella with a 550 Maranello V12 and a V10 Lamborghini! 😂
Right? Absolute hypocrite.
@@JasonWaterfalls13 but they are not daily cars.
He's reviewing the car for potential buyers and people interested in the car for the hell of it. Those things might be an issue for them.
It's hilarious that people who test these things for youtube care about shifting and top speeds. It's very out of touch with the actual people who buy SUVs
While that is true, Testing how easy it is to get KFC gravy cleaned up out of quilted leather upholstery isn't really possibly on a short-term road test.
I like this style of review - giving us a walk through tour!
Always used to enjoy asking owners of the first gen Bentayga how they were enjoying their Kuga.
Joking apart, the first generation of these cars were appallingly put together, certainly from a fit and finish perspective, here's a challenge if you ever see an early one - see if it has an even and consistent tailgate gap (I'll give you a clue, they never do). Still, it appeals to the zeitgeist of excess so naturally people lap them up.
So many SUVs are just posh Audis. Thanks VAG for making the same car over and over again with different badges and body work 😂
For Bentley, literally anything else besides the Bentayga. The Continental is stunning, Flying Spur is gorgeous, Mulsanne is alright but the Bentayga is just ugly to me.
Agreed
Agreed, the Bentayga is ugly.
Agree, the headlights and tail lights in particular look awful, like something from a month 1 car design student.
And such a shame too because the interior really does scream “BENTLEY” but the exterior is just a hell no
Bentley died with the cancellation of the Mulsanne
It's about the feeling of superiority people feel looking down on other drivers from there elevated position
A wise man told me
If you have 20k to spend on a RR
Buy one for 15
The problem is people not being able to afford one then stretching themselves to buy one and not having the cash to maintain it.
They're not as bad as some people would have you believe if they're looked after and issues are dealt with and not allowed to multiply before being sorted.
I worked at Bentley and that suv has Audi driveshaft and suspension. They also had Audi Q7 in garage with wires and a laptop plug into it . 🤫
That sums up that Bentley and it’s pointless you might as well buy a sq7 and not drive a massively overpriced ugly car
Should I buy the 2021 Bentley Bentayga V8? Funny, that question is just what kept me from getting to sleep last night. But I'd have to sell the house and live in it ;-(
I agree completely if they sort the options out it’s pretty much a perfect car for its segment
I agree I hate 4x4s. Never liked the square boxes ...
Magnificent machine and awesome review thank you so much
That review was a masterpiece! Well Done! Loved it, now I’d better start saving up...
Brutal honesty on the Mulliner pack. Well said Sir
I have to defend my XC90 D5 SE 185
It’s nought but a chunky estate car. Carry’s a roof box, outboard engine, dogs, kids, camping gear.... whilst towing a substantial (but legal) German caravan.... On SORN most of the year.... whilst I drive a Yeti....
Holiday time out it goes.... 16 yrs old this year, still in superb condition. 🙂🇸🇪🇬🇧
As I grow older I appreciate manufacturer's that actually have an eye for reliability not just cutting edge technology. If I spend a house note on my transportation, I surely don't expect to be left on the side of the road due to a gang of faulty OBD II sensor or worse. If these auto manufacturers just built more reliable cars, trucks and suv's then word of mouth would increase there sales, period.. I love Range Rovers but only with an LS engine swap with accompanied transmission and ECU. Same can be said for the Jeep brand. You wouldn't catch me in one unless it had the aforementioned swap. I feel like if consumers spoke up against large corporations(through social media platforms, i.e. Me too, BLM) then we the people could actually get what we paid for. Just my 2 quid.
Love your channel, and honest reviews, the Bentley looks awesome, but you are right a lot of extras should be standard.
Your honesty is unique and refreshing.
20:08 did you mug a local dogger for their iPhone footage?!
This man is talking about the environment when he’s just bought a 4.0L daily driver. Is this a wind up?
I like it but I agree no way could I live with the indicator stalks, I would gladly pay an extra 4k for carved walnut or even 5k for machined paladium stalks, il stay with range rover until the indicator stalk situation is resolved.
Interesting point here - no doubt of which you are already aware it’s possible. I recently purchased a Jaguar XJ Portfolio with only 47k for less than the cost in total of the options on the Bentley. Even more astounding (and I believe you mentioned that they should) is that the Jag has all but one of those options already in the spec, including the seat emblems massage and adaptive cruise control etc. Not only very comfortable lots of hand stitched leather- even suede. Alas, it on has a twin to V6 and is comparatively sluggish at 6 whole seconds to hit 60mph & ridiculous top speed of only 155mph. I am told that Bowers & Wilkins 1200watt sound system is pretty good quality as well The Jag also has sliding hatches to cover those never used ugly cup-holders. I like the verdant green , I am stuck with black and an Ivory interior. Seemingly the same clock (but probably not).
Points well taken about standard equipment, but it begs the question: Why would a manufacturer makes things standard, when the target market will happily pay extra for the options? Its just good business sense.
Seems like most who might be prospective buyers wins as well: The one who just want a bentley badge dont have to pay extra for the things they dont want and the ones who want the extra goodies, probably can afford them as well? That leaves the folks that can afford the car and want the extras but cant afford those, but I would think they are the minority in being prospective customers for this car?
Great photography! Love seeing the reflections on the windows and car.
You are brutally blunt but your are on point !! Thanks! Bentley needs to be more competitive and alluring for the more younger and greener market!
I would be interested to see a AM Dbx review
Great review aswell 👍🏻
This is possibly the best car review you’ve ever made.
Great review Jay but you should have given it a run off road too! Looks can be deceiving 🔱.
LMAO I was just saying that the other day, I have never seen more Range Rovers in my life than in the last couple of years and I am in Michigan in the USA. 😂
Everyone seems to have been buying BMW and Range Rover suvs these days.
Iv just come across this video and I like it to other car review as you go into detail about the spec of the car, I hope your other vidoew are like this
The issue with the indicator stalks is that it is entirely linked to the pedals , steering , it’s hideously expensive to make the change to Bentley ones , which has always been disappointing, but sadly a no brainer from an accounting perspective. Another point to note , a lot of Bentley owners come from Mercedes
and Land Rover and have barely stepped in a Audi Q7 , so it’s just a non issue on the showroom floor , it’s mainly noticed by motoring press more than buyers. Great review , balanced and fair.
Wishing you all the best in growing your channel. Your an honest and unwavering journalist. And I love how they can never pay you off.your a man of the utmost integrity. Also loved your intro.....I hate 4 x 4 s....hate them....drove a range rover..loved it...drove an q7 loved it....drove an f pace..loved it....ha ha,l ha ha....love how you can change your mind and just be honest.honesty will get you there in the end, and bless your not as bland as some shmothers...lol
Great review - you’re right about the 8 plus gear changes on automatic large cars especially when they can’t pick the right gear for a roundabout.
James ‘Naim’ dropping again?😂
That coat needs it's own channel.
🤣🤣🤣 Caught myself staring at it whilst trying to listen.
It's becos of crash testing they use the Audi stalks it's too expensive to crash test other wise ....lol
and the interior matches the shirt beautifully.
that amazing intro of the v16 panzer made me fall out of my chair
That's why you should always wear your seat belt!
Are you telling me adaptive cruise isn’t standard on a car like this? Mom’s three cylinder Suzuki has adaptive cruise.
It comes down to choice. I drive a Range Rover because I like it.
Objectively you are spot on but that shirt brings your aesthetic expertise into question 😂
The shirts serve a purpose ;)
Love this video to the point where I subscribed and hit the ringy ding dinger. Ace.
There are only two types of 4x4 that are acceptable to be. Farm yard equipment, and the utterly bonkers.
While I do agree crossovers/SUVs are giant prams lets not pretend that the RS6s and E63s car enthusiasts love aren't much lighter.
But the wagons do have a lower drag coefficient aswell
SUVs succeed because they're muscle wagon-hatches. People feel safer in them and that's mostly all that matters. They're like incredibly sweet snacks, they taste awesome but are actually dangerous and should be banned because people love them.
In fact, some manufactures are trying the way of the high riding cars, which was a thing in the '30s (albeit with saloons and GTs) and that's miles better.
Thank you for helping me through my partner watching Eurovision,👍
Excellent review!! Most reviews don't criticize Bentley.
Come on James, SUV/SAVs are excellent 😎 They can do everything well:
Handle reasonably well or better (X5M F15 vs M6 RWD 🌧) ✅
Off Road ✅
Practicality ✅
Presence (G Class) ✅
Excellent content as always! 😎
More expensive
Worse on fuel
Less aerodynamic
Heavier
Most can't go properly off road (unless they're real 4x4s which most aren't)
Slower
Wear out suspension faster
More load/stress of running gear
Not very many of them actually look good, decent at best
This logic escapes most motoring journalists I'm afraid. They love to criticize SUVs for being big and using tons of fuel, yet heap endless praise on whatever new V-12 Ferrari or Lamborghini comes out... Utter nonsense.
@@daleboyd8010 Most can't go offroad part is forgiven because they can still handle the average amount of offroading most people would ever do.
It's like complaining about people buying crossovers in FWD rather than the AWD.
Some people do really only want the higher ground clearance cause its easier to get in and out of compared to a car for example (don't have to bend down like in a car). They don't necessarily need AWD that's why such options exist. Its not stupid if it fits the needs of people.
They aren't "slower" if they can accelerate at the same pace as most sportscars lol. Sure the higher you sit, the less you "feel" the speed. You're trading off the feel of speed for comfort and broader visibility.
The looks and design of them is debatable, I won't get into that part.
Absolutely love it!
Would I buy? Yes 🙌 In 5 years when it’s 30K
The interior between the 1st gen Bentayga and this one is pretty much identical except for the digital instrument cluster, infotainment screen, and the air vents in the center console. Everything else is the exact same.
Great channel love it !
There are those of us who only own, AND WHO WILL ONLY OWN, 4 wheel drive vehicles who live on this planet, and here I'll speak for only myself: the newest model year vehicle I own is a 1999 Ford F-350 XLT Powerstroke diesel CrewCab (4 door) LongBox 4x4 truck, and I use it to tow one of my other three 4x4 vehicles, those being my 85 AMC Cj7, my 74 Ford Bronco (high horsepower 347 Ford small block powered), and my 44 Ford GP flat fender Jeep....I'll put it this way: who the hell do you think you are to tell me what type vehicle I "should" own and drive?! My 74 Bronco gets maybe, MAYBE, 8-10 miles a gallon and if you don't like that fact, IDGAF....not one of my rigs is mandated to be smogged save for the 99 F-350, and that's one of the many reasons I will only purchase older vehicles for the rest of my life (my 85 Cj7 is mandated to pass a smog test every other year , but since I replaced the stock motor with a Ford Coyote motor, I deleted all the smog reclamation system from my Jeep, so now I just pay a dude I know a couple 100 dollar bills, and then he "makes it" pass the smog test) ...not one of my rigs leaks a drop of anything, they sure as hell don't smoke, and I'll never not own and drive vehicles that ARE NOT "GREEN"....and besides, the batteries on junk electric cars are not recyclable as of yet, when they inevitably catch fire they are damn near impossible to extinguish, and quite frankly, I'm not a big enough of a POS to own and drive an EV.....
The naim may be expensive but fucking hell is it powerful. Couldn’t believe it when I first experienced it
Nailing the chauffeur look there!👌
driven audis, BMWs and Mercs and audis indicator stalks feel leagues ahead in terms of quality IMO
Stick with my BMW X5 M 45e thanks. The cup holders should have a cover they don't look great as they are.
Bentley employee: Can we design some indicator stalks?
That German guy: We have indicator stalks at home.
The indicator stalks at home...
Yet another honest quality video 👍🏻
Really enjoyed them Jay. Cracking video
Spending my hard earned cash on an expensive SUV is for me impossible just to gratify my ego. Cars will always keep mere mortals poor.
Some amount of people are flat broke trying to look the part in a fancy car. Those £450 per months soon get old
Hastily redone Q7! Classic Nikki Glaser hastily packed suitcase reference 🐫!
Was in a big SUV and was rear ended full speed by a car at a stoplight. We survived with no issues. In a car, we would have been dead. So, yeah, i will keep buying SUVs.
Fantastic review, made me chuckle and has made my day 😂👍
I don't just hate these. Looking at them actually pisses me off.
i cant help but entirely disagree with the idea that supercars in the last 25 years all do better than 0-60 in 4s and 190mph top out
I think the royal family has played an important part in making Land Rovers desirable.
Believe me, they look MUCH better in the flesh, especially in black with black wheels.
The problem with the SUV being heavy isn't exclusive to it, cars have been getting heavier because of safety which is nice but also because of unnecessary technology like the electronic hand brake, electric windows, start stop buttons etc
You can buy a bmw m5 comp 2019 with 2000 miles for 67k. Just saying.
A proud and noble beast. Cars nice as well.
NO. Love the Conti, but in this category, RR or DBX every time.
Class sir...just like your shirt!
It wasn't the Bentayga making the mums blush, it was the shirt.
I know exactly what you mean about 4x4s. I hate them, I think they're pointless, and I think everyone that buys them is a knob. However I've just ordered a new F Pace because I fell in love with it as soon as I drove it.
