In 1994 he formed Goldblade, who have released several albums including 2005′s Rebel Songs and 2008′s 'Mutiny' and single "City Of Christmas Ghosts" featuring Poly Styrene on shared vocals. Robb has appeared as a pundit on many television programmes including Channel 4′s "top 100″ shows, BBC's I Love the 60s/70s/80s/90s series and Seven Ages of Rock, as well as offering expert pop culture opinion on several TV debate shows and both BBC and Channel 4 news. He has contributed to BBC 2′s The Culture Show as well as several appearances on TV documentaries, and he is also a regular on BBC radio commenting on pop culture. He has been a regular contributor to Sky's The Pop Years and co-produced and presented a ten-part series on the history of punk rock.

John Robb was kind and decent enough to reply to my request for a postal interview 33 years ago for my fanzine.
I wrote to the address on the back of a Membranes LP. I was 15 years old. I was overjoyed to receive a response. A year or so later I was going to Membranes gig in Glasgow. He inspired me then and I'm glad he is still encouraging other people.

That sounds like a kind thing to do. But was that was that all there was to it? Remember, he's still a celebrity.

So good music in popular tv culture is dead. So what! Good music in the underground is still alive and well. People just need to just dig a bit futher than radio, tv, magazines which are force feeding you what they, the record companies are trying sell you. Online streaming services allow you to do this digging and discovery. Its the greatest shop window in the world for music.

I only started taking John Robb seriously about 15 years ago. I don't fully understand 'tribute bands', and never will. The 70's were a time of confusion and realisation, but they were memorable.

Interesting talk. I sent John my first album for him to review it back in 2013 when i released it. He replied to my email, straight away, which was nice of him. Saying that he would give my music a listen, to see if he liked it.
My music is a no auto tune vocal, and acoustic guitar. I think that it is art. My art. Worthy of any stage i have headlined these last 5 years.
John didn't reply. I got the impression that my music wasn't mainstream enough for him to reply. Maybe too 'underground' for even his ears. No reply, to me, felt like no respect. My music did better than i expected that year. I headlined gigs off the back of my soundcloud recordings. I was interviewed on a handful of US radio stations, which made my bandcamp sell quite well. I went from playing parties, to pubs, to clubs, to universities, even to a headline theatre performance that year. All after John didn't reply. So, its not like my music appealed to nobody.
I think that there are a lot of celebrities who appear on television programmes etc, that think that they are 'underground scene' in music, but are actually just as sheltered from the bottom level as the Ed Sheeran's of the industry are.

I wouldn't fret about it too much. I imagine he's the type of guy who receives a lot of correspondence on top of his regular work/life commitments. It's possible he was simply side tracked or overwhelmed. You've proved your music is valuable and worthy of attention and whats more you did it on your own. That's a massive achievement.

@@50milliondownthedraintonym16 He did mention that he would review it, but never got back to me.
Maybe he just didn't have the heart to tell me how shite he thought it was. 🤣
Its no big deal, it was a long time ago now anyway.

Absolute sense, music went tits up in 1990, when stock aching and waterman launched shite like kylie Minogue and all the other shit. Bubblegum bollox. There are some good acts out there, but most never make it to the top, especially if they are not shiny, nice looking and saleable. X factor with the exception of say a few is total crap. A good band should have guitars, vocals and percussion. All we have is boy or girl bands etc. At least I'm proud to be able to listen to proper bands from '76- 90. Well done John Robb
